U of L cleaning up following flood event

During the evening of June 5, 2013, a significant water-main break occurred at the construction site adjacent to the Students' Union Building at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's main campus.

As a result, major flooding occurred in the Library and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Centre for the Arts.

Due to the immediate extent of the flooding, classes in the Library and the Centre for the Arts scheduled for Thursday, June 6, 2013 have been cancelled. Classes located in buildings other than those affected by the flooding are taking place as scheduled.

Employees who work in the Library and the Centre for the Arts are asked not to access their workspaces until further notice.

Students, staff and faculty are also encouraged to watch their uleth.ca e-mail accounts as specific information pertaining to class schedules, university services and recovery efforts will be shared in the coming days. Email service for faculty, staff and students has been fully restored.

Art Student Open House, Apr. 23-24

Once again this spring, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Department of Art opens its studios and workshops to welcome the public.

On April 23-24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, the Art Student Open House will be held.

"We want people to experience the diversity and excellence of work by students in art courses," says Annie Martin, art faculty advisor to the project, which is largely organized by art students. "Visitors experience artwork in a wide array of media, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, print, installation, multimedia, and video, by both undergraduate and Master of Fine Arts students. This is a great opportunity to see work by the next generation of artists."

The open house also provides an opportunity for the public to talk with students about their art practices and take a look at the excellent art facilities. Students, faculty and technical staff are on hand to answer questions and people can get guided tours on a drop-in basis by stopping at the welcome table near the stairs on the 8th level of the Centre for the Arts. School tours can be arranged by contacting Nicole Hembroff (Nicole.hembroff@uleth.ca)

The awards for excellence in Art studio and Art History/Museum Studies will be held at 4:30 p.m. in W817 on Apr. 24.

"Join us to celebrate the achievements of our students as we announce the recipients of a number of awards for excellence," says Martin. "Everyone is welcome."

U of L Gallery plays its part in Artwalk

Culture, community and creativity abound at the annual Artwalk event, to be held throughout the city, Sept. 17 to 18. And, no art festival in southern Alberta is complete without the participation of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

"The U of L Art Gallery is one of the few venues outside the downtown core during Artwalk," says Jane Edmundson, curatorial assistant. "We participate to encourage visitors to come enjoy our exhibitions and activities, and to provide yet another good reason to cross the river and see what the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has to offer."

A map of all the venues participating in Artwalk is available at the U of L Art Gallery, which joins in the festivities on Sept. 18 with an exhibition entitled, Jamelie Hassan's At The Far Edge of Words, and a hands-on Culture Vulture activity for the whole family. The Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to viewing the exhibition, art enthusiasts of all ages are invited to participate in creating a project of epic proportions that allows visitors to respond to the larger ideas that Hassan explores in her work.

"We are creating a mandala, to cover the entire floor of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall Atrium in the Centre for the Arts," says Rosalind Jeffrey, Culture Vulture program co-ordinator. Using archival photos from Lethbridge's past, text and other materials, Jeffrey anticipates the mandala's colour and size will be awe-inspiring.

"Mandalas are used in multiple cultures and may be familiar to people in Lethbridge because the Buddhist monks made a sand mandala a few years ago at the Lethbridge Centre," she says.

The U of L Art Gallery project is inspired by the work of Hassan, who uses cultural symbolism to speak about place.

"Helping to create the mandala is a creative way for everyone to engage with the overlap of different cultures and explore a time honoured, non-permanent art practice," she says.

Instead of creating an individual artwork to take home and keep, participants help make a collective project that will be swept up and then disappear at the end of the day.

"What stays with people is their memory and experience of having helped create a piece of art that reflects Lethbridge's past and its significance in our world, rather than a physical object," says Jeffrey.

Two new graduate degree offerings

Commencing in September 2009, the Faculty of Fine Arts at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge introduces two new graduate degree programs in the creative arts, a Master of Fine Arts and Master of Music.

"The introduction of these two new degrees marks a major step in the Faculty's strategic objective of providing an advanced research-based education in four disciplines: art, dramatic art, music and new media," says Dr. Desmond Rochfort, dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Building on the Faculty's acknowledged strength of providing a first-class undergraduate education in the creative arts, these new Master's degree programs offer those wishing to pursue graduate education in the Fine Arts the opportunity to be part of a community of intensely active faculty practitioners and scholars.

Supporting an environment of experimentation and innovation as well as the pursuit of disciplinary excellence and expertise, this community also provides graduate students with opportunities to pursue integration of their practice with new technologies and cross-disciplinary projects between the fine arts, the humanities, the sciences and social sciences.

Located in the Centre for the Arts, the four departments of Art, Music, New Media and Theatre and Dramatic Arts are supported by excellent studios and resourced with a wide range of outstanding technical workshop, performance and digital facilities.

The MFA and MMus degrees are two-year, full-time, research-based programs. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is committed to providing adequate financial support for all graduate students and, therefore, guarantees a minimum of $1,000 per month for the 24 months of study. The MFA (Dramatic Arts) also offers a $1,000 entrance scholarship for students specializing in design.

May 1 is the application deadline for both programs.

Art Student Open House

The halls and studio spaces throughout the 8th level of the Centre for the Arts will be filled with student artwork during the 3rd Annual Art Student Open House, Apr. 21-22, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Students will proudly display their works in a variety of media including photography, prints, paintings, mixed media, sculpture, video and more. Many of the pieces are for sale.

"The Open House is a great opportunity for everyone to see the results of the activities going on in students' studios all year long," says Mary Kavanagh, Department of Art chairperson. "It is also an opportunity for the public to talk with students about their art practices and to view our excellent facilities."

The Student Art Society organizes the Art Student Open House, with assistance from Art faculty. With almost 300 members, the Student Art Society is one of the largest clubs on the

U of L campus. It has been active since 2003 and endeavours to encourage and support student artists as they grow and develop.

Catalog launch party at SU

The New Media 3700: Production Management class at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is hosting a catalog launch and art exhibition closing party Thursday in the Students' Union Ballroom.

Beginning at noon and continuing to 10 p.m., the party includes a variety of events. It also recaps the 2009 Showcase student art exhibition, which appeared in the Level 7 Gallery throughout the month of March.

The Level 7 Gallery, on the 7th level of the Centre for the Arts at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, provides exhibition space for digital artwork by students from across the Faculty of Fine Arts.

The catalog launch and closing party features a selection of artwork, which appeared in the Level 7 Gallery, films from the 3rd annual U of L Film Festival, as well as a live jazz band. The event is also the launch of the print catalog, documentary film and docent CD for the Level 7 Gallery: 2009 Showcase.

Unique theatre program on horizon

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts and the Centre for Indigenous Theatre (Toronto) are entering into a unique partnership that will yield an exciting educational opportunity in the coming fall.

A new Summer Theatre Program is to be offered Aug. 3-29, 2009, offering courses in performing arts technique from a uniquely Aboriginal perspective.

Representatives from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre will be on campus Friday to discuss the innovative program at an information session, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., in room W420 in the Centre for the Arts.

This program is a three-week intensive that offers courses in performing arts technique from a uniquely Aboriginal perspective. Included in the curriculum are classes in movement, voice, acting, story creation and song creation as well as Indigenous Dance and cultural teachings.

Senior artist Muriel Miguel, of Spiderwoman Theatre in New York, leads the program. Joining her will be a contingent of renowned local and national instructors. The program is open to students of Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) ancestry only.

Students who attend the Friday information session will learn more about this exciting opportunity and how they can receive U of L course credit by attending this program in either Native American Studies or Drama.
