Long Service & Retirement Recognition Ceremony

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 9 at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballrooms.

A total of 103 employees, including 20 retiring employees and those who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service, will be honoured.

All employees are invited to the ceremony and reception to honour the award recipients listed below. The reception will include light refreshments.

Identifying a student need

Tom Doyle knows that being a student isn't easy.

"As a student I worked at least 32 hours per week while taking four to five courses," says Doyle, who is both a staff member and alumnus of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. "It was challenging and kept me busy, but it also forced me to be very responsible with my time."

Tom Doyle (BSC '93) understands the challenges students face when trying to balance studies with work.

Doyle persevered, was able to balance his work schedule with his academic responsibilities and earned a bachelor of science degree in 1993. He's now the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's manager of enterprise systems for Information Technology.

"Although I left the U of L for awhile, I always had an affinity for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ," he says. "I was happy to come back to work here in 1996 and I have been here ever since."

When Doyle looks around campus today, he understands that many students face the same challenges he did.

"I can empathize with those students who are driven and motivated but struggling financially," he says. "I know what that is like, and I am passionate about supporting students in those situations."

Supporting Our Students (SOS), an annual campaign aimed toward faculty and staff, allows Doyle to help those students. As co-chair of this year's campaign, Doyle sees an opportunity for faculty and staff to come together to contribute to the success of students, which in turn benefits the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as a whole.

"Strong student enrolment and participation are important, and having scholarships and bursaries available to them helps to support that," he says. "I am proud to be a part of a core group that is committed to the success of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and its students."

Doyle readily accepted the responsibility of being a campaign co-chair because he believes in the supportive atmosphere that SOS fosters.

"This campaign demonstrates that staff and faculty members are not just doing a job, but that they are truly engaged with and supportive of the students that come here," he says.

For Doyle, this campaign is about more than financial contributions.

"It's not just about the money, it's about the real difference that even a nominal gift can make in the life of a student," he says. "If you care about this campus and believe that education makes a difference, then supporting our students is one of the best things you can do."

Putting students first

Robin Bright (BEd '82, MEd '88) and Tom Doyle (BSc '93) are proud to be Co-Chairs of Supporting Our Students (SOS) 2011/12. Although they admit they don't have much in the way of fundraising experience, they have come together to set an example and lead the charge for faculty and staff giving at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

"I'll ask anyone for money," laughs Bright, adding that it has to be for a good cause. Doyle is not quite so bold, but he is similarly committed to the campaign.

"SOS is something I can get behind because I feel strongly about it," says Doyle, who benefitted from scholarships when he was a U of L student. "There are lots of students here who are very driven but are financially strapped. I know what that's like and I'm passionate about supporting those individuals."

While support is often measured in dollars, Bright and Doyle want to emphasize that the success of this year's campaign will be measured by the number of donors, rather than the size of the gifts.

"The SOS campaign is about people," explains Bright, who truly values the personal connections she's made during her time at the U of L. "It's about faculty and staff from across campus coming together to help create a positive learning environment and make students feel welcome."

Both Bright and Doyle feel this is something faculty and staff do already through their work on campus. The SOS campaign is just another way to show students they are part of a campus community that cares.

"The SOS campaign demonstrates that U of L faculty and staff are not just doing a job – they are truly engaged and supportive of the students here," says Doyle.

Since its launch in 2005, faculty and staff have shown their support by donating more than one million dollars to SOS. Bright and Doyle hope this is just the beginning and are looking for faculty and staff support again this year.

"I want to keep reminding myself that I'm here because of the students who choose to study at the U of L," says Bright, reflecting on her own reasons for giving. "I'm grateful to be in a position to give back to my university and support the students who make that choice."

"When you stop and think about how your contribution can impact the life of even one student, it can be very humbling," adds Doyle. "I want to encourage other faculty and staff members to think about the difference their contribution could make on someone's education and potentially their life."

Relay for Life ready to roll

The 2011 Fiat Lux team is ready to walk – rain or shine – to support cancer research at the Relay for Life, June 10-11 at the Victory Church grounds.

Since 2006, they have raised more than $40,000 in funds, and last year won a gold award for raising more than $11,000 to be the top fundraising team in Lethbridge.

In addition to the Fiat Lux unit, many other members of the
U of L community participate on other teams, or as event volunteers. People interested in joining the team can contact co-captain Deirdre Coburn (deirdre.coburn@uleth.ca).
