Von Heyking recognized with merit award

Sonya von Heyking (CA, CIA, BMgt '03 Great Distinction) is one of 22 Alberta-based chartered accountants being honoured with a 2012 Merit Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA) for making significant contributions to charitable and community causes, as well as to the CA profession.

An internal auditor with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge since May 2006, von Heyking is being awarded an Early Achievement Award, presented to CAs who, within the first 10 years since qualifying, have demonstrated excellence in professional, civic, charitable, community or other services. Von Heyking received her CA designation in 2006, and prior to joining the U of L, worked at KPMG in Lethbridge.

Reporting to the Audit Committee of the Board of Governors, von Heyking has worked on numerous projects that have helped to streamline processes or affect savings or efficiencies for the U of L, including H1N1 preparedness, supplier selection processes and analysis of various activities related to strategic priorities.

Internal auditor Sonya von Heyking is a 2012 Merit Award winner.

"We are extremely proud of Sonya's achievement," says Bob Turner, the U of L Board of Governors Chair. "Sonya is a valuable member of our administrative team, and has an excellent working relationship with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community. In her position, she looks at many different aspects of our business and financial environment, and has a varied skill set that enables her to advise the Board and our senior administrative group with a high level of confidence. This recognition by the ICAA affirms what we already know, and appreciate, about her service to the U of L."

Von Heyking has also earned her CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) designation, making her one of the few CAs in the province with that distinction. As well, she presents at numerous conferences, recently earning a trip to the Institute of Internal Auditors 'All Stars' international conference – an opportunity based on positive feedback from colleagues, audiences and conference organizers.

Among other projects, von Heyking designed assurance engagements that allowed U of L students to conduct actual audit work under her guidance, and present their reports to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Audit Committee. This project was extremely successful and benefitted both the students and Internal Audit.

As an Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta Centennial Ambassador, von Heyking also volunteered extensively in 2010 to establish a long-term fund supporting academic awards in local high schools. Through contributions by Lethbridge and area chartered accountants, the project ultimately raised sufficient funds to provide 60 annual awards to local high school students.

"The ICAA is, once again, honouring a tremendous class of Merit Award recipients," says Blair Nixon (Q.C. FCA), president of the ICAA. "Each of this year's recipients, including Ms. von Heyking, have left a positive impression on those around them. Throughout the profession's history, CAs have been known for making a difference in Alberta's communities – and within the profession. As always, this year's recipients live up to that reputation."

In total, 22 Alberta recipients will be officially recognized at the 2012 Merit Awards Gala, which takes place June 22 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton.

Achieving success on his own terms

It was after a long, hard summer day working with his dad on the family dairy farm that a young Paul Campeau (BMgt '04) first pondered the values that he would live his life by.

"I grew up with a good sense that hard work is required to achieve anything in life. I worked with my father and uncle and woke up at 4:30 in the morning to milk cows and then I would go work in the fields when I wasn't in school," says Campeau. "I remember going into the house for dinner late one day when my dad told me that although his job wasn't glamorous, he loved experiencing life every day, making his own decisions about what to do and how to best do it. That definitely affected my life. I tend to do things off the beaten path. I still work hard; I just do it my own way."

Alumnus Paul Campeau and his business partner Will Henderson represent a new breed of accountant.

The co-owner and partner of the successful new accounting firm, Henderson Campeau Chartered Accountants LLP, also drew inspiration from his mother.

"My mom has always been supportive of everything I do," he says. "I watched her strength and love as she raised five kids. She enjoyed a beautiful life every day. I try to have a positive outlook and enjoy each day to its fullest too."

After high school, Campeau earned a business administration diploma from Red Deer College. Several years later, he applied to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Edmonton campus to complete his management degree with a focus on accounting.

"The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ accepted my business diploma courses and offered the broad range of courses I was looking for. The practical, hands-on approach to teaching gave me the flexibility to be myself, express my ideas, participate in in-depth class discussions and have access to great professors, most of them industry professionals," says Campeau. "I believe that you learn so much from experience and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's satellite campus had a great way of teaching that."

Campeau graduated in 2004 and began working on his Chartered Accountant (CA) designation while articling at Deloitte & Touche LLP in Edmonton. Two years later, with a CA designation under his belt, the lure of beautiful warm weather and a smaller firm had him jumping ship to Bermuda where he met his future wife, Carly.

"When I worked for Deloitte, I got a high level of education and experience but I always wanted to work for a smaller firm. The owners of the firm in Bermuda had a laid back attitude. They expected a lot but they also trusted that I would do what needed to be done," says Campeau.

Moving to Amsterdam with Carly in 2008, Campeau began working as a senior accountant for Align Technology. Living in the Netherlands further highlighted Campeau's desire to enjoy every moment of his life.

"In Amsterdam, your bike is your only source of transportation. They don't take things as seriously there as we do in North America. You learn that you can live a beautiful and uncomplicated life," says Campeau.

Spurred on by this same attitude, Campeau and his future business partner Will Henderson began laying the groundwork for an opportunity to control their own destinies; their accounting firm.

"When we were both students we joked a lot about starting our own firm. The timing was just right and everything just fell into place. We opened the doors in February 2010," explains Campeau.

Taking a different approach from more traditional accounting firms, Henderson Campeau is about high quality service in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. The TV in the lobby and couch in the boardroom are examples of this unique approach.

Campeau and Henderson are living life and succeeding on their own terms, balancing hard work, reliability, trust and excellent service with a passion for fun and a determination to savour every moment.

"We don't ever want to get too big for our britches that we forget to enjoy life. We want provide a high level of service for all of our clients. We want to make them comfortable and respond to their needs the same day. It is exciting to see our clients succeed, to know that you have added value to them and to the community," says Campeau. "Walking into work with your best friend, being able to trust each other, help each other out and watch TV over coffee is great. This isn't just a job, it is a lifestyle."

Hunter named CMA Distinguished Scholar

The Faculty of Management welcomed a representative of the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of Alberta to campus recently to present an award to Dr. M. Gordon Hunter, FCMA, who has been designated the CMA Distinguished Scholar.

"I am very honoured to be named the first-ever CMA Alberta Distinguished Scholar," says Hunter. "I look forward to working with the CMA Alberta office to promote the CMA brand through academic intitiatives. Most importantly, for me, I am excited about continuing my work with students through information sessions and case competitions."

Hunter received his award from Kara Mitchelmore, CMA President and CEO.

"I'm honoured to present the CMA Distinguished Scholar Award to Dr. Hunter," says Mitchelmore. "He has been a strong advocate of the CMA designation, a pillar in the Lethbridge post-secondary community for a number of years and an outstanding member all around."

Mitchelmore also spoke to the gathering about the proposed merger among the national CMA, Chartered Accountants (CA) and Certified General Accountants (CGA) bodies. In Alberta, the CGA joined the provincial merger discussions with CMA Alberta and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA) last October. The unification would see all three associations granted the designation of Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA). Talks are in the preliminary stages at this time, with the expectation that a decision on whether or not to present members with a unification framework will be made later this year or by early 2012.

Alumni earn top honours

Three ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management (accounting) alumni recently earned top honours on the Uniform Evaluation (UFE), the exam written by all Chartered Accountant (CA) hopefuls.

Andrea Harper (Young Parkyn McNab LLP, Lethbridge), Kelsey (Watson) Stimson (Meyers Norris Penny, Lethbridge) and Eric Van Dyk (BDO Canada LLP, Edmonton) claimed three of eight national honour roll positions from a pool of 479 people in Alberta who wrote and passed the exam.

All simultaneously earned a spot on the ICAA's [Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta] prestigious Vic Dzurko Honour Roll and will be awarded the Winspear Medal of Excellence and a $1,000 cash prize.

Six new inductees to Alumni Honour Society

Following are 2009 inductees into the Alumni Honour Society

In celebration of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's 35th Anniversary in 2002, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association established the Alumni Honour Society to recognize the achievements of successful alumni within the global community. The individuals inducted into this prestigious group serve as role models through success in their vocation, outstanding community service or superior accomplishment in their avocation.

Chris Burton (BEd '74, DPE '78) is a champion of youth who has dedicated her life to teaching, coaching and giving back to the community.

The Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Teacher of the Year for 2008, Burton has been an active member of the Girl Guides of Canada and will take on the role of Chief Commissioner of Canada in 2009. Her commitment and enthusiasm to youth and the community is demonstrated through awards such as Lethbridge Woman of Distinction (1989), Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and Alberta Sports Hall of Fame (2006).

Dr. Douglas Colwell (BASc '74) is a research scientist at the Lethbridge Research Centre and a valued adjunct professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Internationally recognized for his studies on the interactions between insect parasites and their animal hosts, Colwell was honoured as a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society in 2006. He is an active member of the community and serves on numerous editorial boards, professional associations and graduate student committees.

Delia Cross Child (BA '96, BEd '02) is a contemporary artist and educator whose creativity and compassion have brought pride to her community and awareness to First Nations issues.

Known for integrating tradition and history with a modern sensibility, Cross Child's work has been exhibited at the Glenbow Museum, Walter Phillips Gallery and Southern Alberta Art Gallery.

As a teacher, she has woven traditional visual literacy into her curriculum to successfully inspire and motivate learning in students.

Dean Gallimore (BMgt '84) is the office-managing partner for KPMG LLP in Lethbridge as well as a strong community advocate. Gallimore has generously chaired such committees as the Chartered Accountants of Alberta Education Foundation, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Planned Giving Advisory Committee and Faculty of Management Advisory Committee.

Dedicated to his profession and respected by his peers, he has received the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta Distinguished Service Award (2001) and was honoured as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (2008).

Cecily Kenwood (BASc '78) is a local lawyer who has devoted much time to improving the Lethbridge community. As a long-time member of the Lethbridge Regional Legal Aid committee, she received an award of recognition from Legal Aid Alberta in 2008.

At the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Kenwood has served as vice-president of the Alumni Association and as a member of the Senate. In addition, she has been a board member with diverse organizations including the Lethbridge John Howard Society, St. Michael's Health Care Centre, Waterton Beargrass Festival and Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens.

Guy McNab (BASc '82) is a partner at MacLachlan McNab Hembroff, Barristers and Solicitors, in Lethbridge who has continued his strong association with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. As a member of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors, McNab was respected for his significant investments of time and effort on behalf of the institution.

He has also served as counsel to the Federal Government of Canada on various provincial inquiries, volunteered his time providing public legal education workshops since 1990 and is an active member of the Lethbridge Legal Guidance Society.
