Dr. Dennis Connolly to be honoured at second annual Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Arts & Science is pleased to honour mathematics professor, Dr. Dennis Connolly (LLD ’17), at its second annual Wine & Dine: Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner. The dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 17 at the Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge.

Proceeds from the event go into creating a scholarship in the honouree’s name, providing students with essential financial support to assist them in attaining their educational goals.

Connolly is an exemplary scholar and educator whose dedication to teaching excellence has been experienced by over 10,000 students, across more than five decades.

“While the location of where you build a life may be important, for me it’s really the work and the students that keep me coming back every semester,” says Connolly. “I enjoy seeing students progress through their studies and then where they end up after they’ve crossed the convocation stage.”

An employee of the U of L since 1967, Connolly’s generosity and support extends throughout the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the wider community. As a lifetime advocate of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s sports teams, an enthusiast of the arts and a generous volunteer, Connolly is quite simply packed with school spirit. For all of these reasons, and more, he is an obvious choice as the honouree for the second annual Wine & Dine: Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner.

"On behalf of the Faculty of Arts & Science, I am delighted by the opportunity to honour Dr. Dennis Connolly at this year’s scholarship dinner," says Dr. Matthew Letts, acting dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. "It has been a long road for Dr. Connolly, from his childhood in Australia to his studies in Canada and England and over 52 years of service to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge thus far. It is fitting, therefore, that Dennis was recently honoured with the Blackfoot name Itiiomaahkaa, meaning 'Long Journey,' as well as an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the U of L. As the next step of his journey, I am pleased to honour Dennis as we raise funds for our students at the 2019 scholarship dinner."

The Faculty of Arts & Science acknowledges the contributions of outstanding members of our community through the Wine & Dine: Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner. Honourees are selected in recognition of their leadership, achievement and commitment to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the communities they serve.

Without the support of donors, many students would find funding their post-secondary dreams next to impossible. Financial support helps students create, inquire and discover while focusing on their passion. It helps enlighten their minds to see the depth of possibilities available to them.

The second annual Wine & Dine: Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 17 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge. The dinner features a fine dining experience paired with Australian wines. Tickets for the semi-formal dinner are $150 each or $1,000 for a table of eight and are available online until Oct. 7 at winedine2019.eventbrite.ca. ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ loses one of its founding faculty with passing of Laurence Hoye

One of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's founding faculty members passed away this past weekend. Laurence Hoye, a mathematician who helped found the Department of Mathematics in 1967 and later served as its Chair, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the age of 87 years.

Dr. Dennis Connolly says that Hoye was the Universty's first and longest-serving Chair and was the man responsible for bringing him on board at the U of L in 1967.

The late Dr. Laurence Hoye was the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's first and longest-serving Chair of the Department of Mathematics.

Hoye was born and raised in Lloydminster, Sask. and eventually moved to Edmonton where he pursued his post-secondary education. He graduated from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta with bachelor's and master's in mathematics and settled in Lethbridge in 1961 when he took a teaching job at Lethbridge Community College. He taught U of A math courses there and was a strong proponent of bringing a university to southern Alberta. Once the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge was approved, Hoye took on the role as head of the mathematics department. He later served a variety of academic and administrative roles at the U of L, including time as the associate vice-president (academic). Hoye retired from the U of L in 1993.

LAURENCE GEORGE HOYE passed away peacefully at Edith Cavell Care Centre on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the age of 87 years.

Laurence is survived and lovingly remembered by his two daughters and their families: Lorna & Dave Jones and their son, Jesse of Maple Ridge BC and Valorie Hoye & Michael Methot of Port Coquitlam BC, as well as his nephew, Devon Sissons in Toronto ON.

He was predeceased by his wife, Frances (née Sissons), and his sister, Gladys Jowett, who both passed in 1993.

Laurence was born in Lloydminster SK on June 9, 1932, later moving off the family farm there and into the city of Edmonton. He earned both Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in Mathematics from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta. He and Fran settled in Lethbridge in 1961 when he accepted a job at the local community college. From there, he became part of the team that spearheaded the push for a university. Dad went on to teach and hold administrative positions at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge from its founding in 1967 until his retirement.

In the years after his wife’s passing and his retirement from the university, Laurence found many new activities of interest: from involvement in the Diamond City Community Association while he lived there, to supporting LUSI (Lethbridge United Services Institute) and PROBUS, as well as advocating for nuclear power as part of the informal Energy Collegium. Through it all, “the boys” kept watching, collecting, photographing and talking about trains every week of every year.

The family wishes to thank all of his tremendous friends and the staff at Chinook Regional Hospital, Edith Cavell Care Centre and Alberta Health Services in Lethbridge as well as Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary for their diligent care of Laurence in the last couple of years of his life.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at COUNTRY KITCHEN CATERING, 1715 – Mayor Magrath Drive, South, Lethbridge, on Monday, July 15, at 2 p.m. Use back entrance (east side).

U of L dignitaries honoured with traditional Blackfoot names

One of the more iconic events of Homecoming Weekend was the traditional Blackfoot Naming ceremony that saw five esteemed members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community receive Blackfoot names.

Those honoured with Blacfoot names at the recent Homecoming Weekend included (from left) Dr. Van Christou, Dr. Dennis Connolly, Dr. Andy Hakin, Kurt Schalchter and Janice Varzari. U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon, far right, was previously honoured by the Blackfoot Nation.

A decades-long custom, the naming ceremony recognizes and celebrates the relationship between the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and the Blackfoot Nation. Located in Treaty 7, the heart of traditional Blackfoot Territory, the U of L has enjoyed a deep and meaningful relationship with the Blackfoot people since its inception in 1967.

The latest memers of the U of L community to be honoured with traditional Blackfoot names are: Chancellor Janice Varzari (BN ’90, MEd ’02), Board of Governors Chair Kurt Schlachter (BSc ’00), longest-serving faculty member Dr. Dennis Connolly (LLD '17), Chancellor Emeritus Dr. Van Christou (LLD '84) and Provost & Vice-President (Academic) Dr. Andy Hakin.

Traditional Blackfoot naming ceremony a highlight of Homecoming Weekend

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is excited to welcome everyone to a special Homecoming Weekend this year, Sept. 1-3, 2017, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Proud to be located in Treaty 7, the heart of traditional Blackfoot Territory, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will see five outstanding members of its community, including four alumni, participate in a decades-long custom. Chancellor Janice Varzari (BN ’90, MEd ’02), Board of Governors Chair Kurt Schlachter (BSc ’00), longest-serving faculty member Dr. Dennis Connolly (LLD '17), Chancellor Emeritus Dr. Van Christou (LLD '84) and Provost & Vice-President (Academic) Dr. Andy Hakin will each be honoured with a Blackfoot name as they take part in a traditional naming ceremony.

“Our relationship with the Blackfoot people extends to the very beginning of the U of L and is one that figures prominently in everything we do here at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ,” says Dr. Mike Mahon, President and Vice-Chancellor.

Mahon was bestowed the Blackfoot name Iipisowahsi or Morning Star, meaning son of the sun and the moon, when he was inducted into the Kainai Chieftainship in 2012.

“That was a very significant ceremony for me, and I’m sure the distinguished group of individuals who will be granted their Blackfoot names this weekend see it as a great honour,” adds Mahon. “Blackfoot Elder Dr. Pete Standing Alone gave me my name, saying that the sun is the father and the moon is the mother. Therefore, when they are praying, they often refer to the morning star as their brother. That is very symbolic and reflects the relationship we want to continue to foster with the Blackfoot people.”

The naming ceremony (Saturday, Sept. 2, 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Grove) is just one of a number of Homecoming activities. With three days of free events ranging from behind-the-scenes tours, hands-on workshops, fascinating speakers, live music, an open-air community fair and more, those returning to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as well as newcomers will find plenty to do.

Wieden spurs iGEM to great success

Update: The U of L iGEM team finished in the Sweet Sixteen at the World Jamboree, meaning they were among the top 16 teams in the world and the only Canadian entry to garner that status.

He's part coach, part trainer. He makes his team think outside the box to look at ideas in creative, new ways. He has tried and true methods to stop procrastination, and he encourages his students to let their imaginations run wild.

He has so much confidence in his team that, at an upcoming international competition, he'll be judging others while his U of L team works through its presentation.

As the driving force behind the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) project for the past five years, chemistry and biochemistry researcher Dr. Hans-Joachim (HJ) Wieden has wrangled a large group of undergrad students through numerous challenges, and to a level of proficiency where they are comfortable not only presenting their research to panels of international judges, they manage their own projects, run their own lab and are gaining valuable work experience, recognition and sponsorship money from major organizations.

Wieden is, in other words, not your typical lab or project supervisor. His team continues to achieve top-level results, recently placing in the final four at the iGEM regionals in Indianapolis, Ind. Of the 65 teams entered, the U of L made the finals with Yale ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Brown-Stanford and the eventual regional champion ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Washington.

The success comes with its own challenges.

"At times it was easy to get demoralized after many failed experiments and long hours in the lab," says Dominic Mudiayi. "Then HJ would remind us what was at stake and remind us, "To win something you never had, you have to do something you've never done". One important lesson that I have learned in my iGEM experience is that success does not come easily, and there is no substitute for hard work."

When his students talk about letting their imaginations run wild, it's no joke. The iGEM team competing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston (iGEM World Jamboree, Nov. 5-7) is probably the only one with a Fine Arts and New Media advisor – Anonymous Will Smith – who has worked with the team to produce audio, video and still image artwork based on their research.

The group also produced a docu-drama video about how synthetic biology affects people's everyday lives, and used not only Lethbridge as a backdrop, but involved legendary U of L math professor Dr. Dennis Connolly and Rock 106 radio personalities to illustrate its point. The team played various roles in the presentation, from villains to heroes, and it was a highlight at a recent Alberta-based gathering of iGEM teams (aGEM competition), at which the group placed first.

One student describes his iGEM experience as being one "heck of a ride" because of the intensity of the work, and the fact that it is student-driven.

"HJ believes wholeheartedly in the innovation of his students," says Anthony Vuong. "All the iGEM projects are ideas from the undergrads. The grants are written by the undergrads. If we have questions, he will answer them; if we have ideas, he will provide input; if we have problems, he will help us troubleshoot. We are treated as colleagues and as such, the learning experience is very much hands-on. To top it off, the countless hours Dr. Wieden puts into iGEM are volunteer hours. He is not required to be a part of iGEM, but he does so because he loves science and believes in the potential lying dormant within us."

Bach excels with scientific approach

Megan Bach understands she has an opportunity to make a difference, whether it is on the ice as a member of the Pronghorns women's hockey team, or in the classroom as a 4.0 student aspiring to medical school and a future in neurology. It's probably why she's so mindful of the people who made a difference in her life, and is so willing to give back to the community in their honour.

Bach was named the Canada West women's hockey top student-athlete following the conclusion of the 2010-2011 season. It's an award that comes as no surprise to her coach and is testament to Bach's attitude.

Horns women’s hockey forward Megan Bach is as comfortable on the ice as she is in the chem lab.

"Megan brings excitement and hard work to whatever she puts her mind to," says Pronghorns head coach Chandy Kaip. "She goes above and beyond her coaches' and professors' expectations as a student-athlete. She fits the mold of the ideal student-athlete."

The Champion, Alta. product is in her fourth year of studies at the
U of L, majoring in biochemistry. A fan of the sciences all through high school, Bach was keen on a future as an optometrist. That was until an introductory neuroscience class got her hooked on the brain.

"I really enjoy learning about the brain, it fascinates me," she says. "Learning about the different diseases and how damage to different parts of the brain results in different behaviours really intrigues me."

Bach came to the U of L intent on being a student first. She only decided to try and further her hockey career after she left high school and realized she still longed to play the game. In typical fashion, she won a spot with the Horns by displaying her work ethic.

Bach is a defensive specialist and penalty killer.

"I've always been a defensive forward, I'm not much of a goal scorer but I enjoy the penalty kill, it's simple to me," she says. "The penalty kill makes sense and I just work hard to get the job done."

It sounds familiar to the approach she takes to her schoolwork, an attitude learned from her parents.

"Starting at a young age, they taught me how important school was and to have a good work ethic," says Bach. "It just became habit for me, and it turned into a case where I really enjoyed pushing myself to do the best I possibly could."

It's not always easy to excel in the classroom with the demands of playing a varsity sport chewing up your time but Bach actually finds it easier to get her schoolwork done during the busy Canada West season.

"Time management is the key, and any time I'm away from the rink, I'm doing homework and studying for exams. It's tough but I know that's what I want to do so I'm able to buckle down and focus on it," she says. "It's funny once hockey is done, I have so much more time, I need to try and change gears and manage my time differently. It can be difficult getting into a routine."

Despite the demands on her time, Bach still finds a way to lend her hand in a volunteer capacity. She's especially thankful to a power-skating coach who helped her improve her skills. Ironically, it is U of L Health Sciences professor, Dr. Claudia Steinke, who Bach now assists in running skating sessions for aspiring young players.

"She makes everyone of her students feel special and it's the little things that make a world of difference in a person's life. I can only hope to become half the person she is," says Bach. "I really looked up to her, so when she asked me to help her out with camps, I was happy to do it. It's really exciting to see the growth in girls' hockey and it's fun to get to know some of the girls through the camps that we've done. Seeing them progress and improve is really exciting and rewarding too. What's neat is they come to our games and make signs for us and cheer us on and that's always a lot of fun."

Another Horns' supporter, mathematics professor, Dr. Dennis Connolly, has also impressed upon Bach the opportunities she has before her.

"He's talked to me about doing volunteer work overseas and it's planted a seed in my head," she says. "I'd love to go over and help in whatever way I can. I like to give back to the community because it has always been there for me growing up."

GET THE FACTS

• Bach is scheduled to finish her degree in December 2012, taking extra time because of scheduling conflicts between hockey and courses that require lab work.

• Bach gives credit to her professors for building the Horns' schedule into some of the deadlines she faces for course work. She's also thankful of the Horns' coaching staff and her teammates for their support.

• Bach's family runs a grain farm near Champion. She has a younger sister (13-year-old Christie) who also plays hockey and may one day follow in her footsteps. "She's better than me, getting hat tricks all over the place, it's exciting to watch her," says Bach.

• Bach attended Vulcan County Central High School and played midget hockey in Okotoks, all the while living in Champion. It forced her to implement time-management strategies at a young age in order to excel in her studies.

Convocation highlights week

An estimated 1,500 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students will cross the stage to receive well-earned university degrees this week as the U of L holds its Spring Convocation, Thursday and Friday in the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

A total of four ceremonies will be held over the two days, beginning with Thursday morning's 9:30 a.m. Ceremony I event. Ceremony II is set for Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., followed by Ceremony III and IV on Friday, 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively.

In addition to the many degrees that will be handed out, a number of members from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community will be honoured for outstanding achievements throughout the past year. Dr. Ian McAdam (English) will receive the 2009 Distinguished Teaching Award and be honoured duriing Ceremony I. Dr. Brian Titley (Education) is the 2009 winner of the Ingrid Speaker Medal and he will be honoured during Friday morning's Ceremony III. The 2009 Senate Volunteer Award goes to Dr. Dennis Connolly and he will be honoured during Thursday evening's Chancellor's Dinner, beginning at 6 p.m. A limited number of tickets are still available for this event. Connolly earns Senate Volunteer Award

Pronghorn Pride is more than a catch phrase for Mathematics and Computer Science faculty member Dr. Dennis Connolly – rather it's a way of life.

Connolly, the very deserving recipient of the 2009 Senate Volunteer Award, exemplifies the spirit of giving back to the community, both at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and beyond. The annual award is given in recognition for volunteer work on behalf of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

An employee of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge since 1967, Connolly is an ardent supporter of Pronghorn Athletics and rarely misses a Pronghorn function. Whether he is at team games, fundraising dinners or awards banquets, Connolly shares his enthusiasm with his students and is always one of the first to congratulate Pronghorn athletes and share the success of the teams with students and others.

He is also a regular at many other campus events, including most of the U of L's fine arts offerings.

A huge supporter of the campus United Way campaigns, Connolly was the biggest contributor to the 2003 silent auction and usually buys United Way Cash Calendars for himself, his students and others.

In 2005, he volunteered as Co-Chair of the extremely successful Supporting Our Students campaign. By the conclusion of this campaign, 40 per cent of faculty and staff contributed to student scholarships, one of the highest participation rates in Canada.

"The main reason for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is the students and I want to give something back," he wrote in the Supporting Our Students campaign material.

A graduate of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Sydney, Connolly obtained his master's degree at Western Ontario before completing his PhD at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of York in England. He will be honoured with the 2009 Senate Volunteer Award at the Spring Convocation ceremony.
