Parking lot work ongoing

Construction on a new entrance into Lot E from Valley Road is almost complete. Once the roadway is open work will continue on the parking areas.

During this phase of construction, the existing north entrance at the lights will be closed, as well as the entire area adjacent to Anderson Hall (Lots E, F, and FS).

Depending on the weather this portion of the project will begin around Thursday, July 5.

Current permit holders will be asked park in the west side of Lot E until the construction is finished at the end of August.

Access will be provided at the existing south entrance at Aperture Drive and the new entrance. A map outlining the access points and parking areas is displayed below.

The parking lot redevelopment project was set to begin in early June however, due to recent rains, work on the project was delayed.

Construction on a new entrance into Lot E from Valley Road is now underway, and once the roadway is operational, work will continue on redeveloping the parking areas adjacent to Anderson Hall in Lots E, F, and FS.

Renovations to these lots will include the removal and replacement of existing lighting and plug-in pedestals, new storm water drainage, concrete curbing, sidewalks and paving.

During construction, the existing north entrance will be closed to traffic. Access to Lot E will be provided at Aperture Drive and the new entrance.

Current permit holders will be directed to park in the larger section of Lot E during construction.

The Facilities department will work diligently to provide ample signage across campus and provide regular updates to advising users of pedestrian routes and parking restrictions.

Construction work for 2012 should be substantially completed by Aug. 15 with all work finalized by Aug. 31.

The second phase of construction will happen in the spring of 2013. This phase will see the redevelopment of Lots E and G.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is embarking on a major parking lot redevelopment project this summer which will enhance the campus environmentally and aesthetically.

Redevelopment of the campus's western parking lots is set to begin this spring; beginning with the creation of a new entranceway at the northwest corner of Lot E.

This is just the beginning of the project that will give a facelift to Lots E, F, FS and G along Anderson Hall and the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The result will be more practical parking and the addition of environmentally sustainable and aesthetically pleasing landscaping.

The $2.5 million project will be developed over two summers, with completion aimed for 2013. Parking access will be provided away from construction while the project is underway. Check the Notice Board and campus digital signage for further parking notices as construction begins.

The revamped design of the parking lots includes bio swales (drainage) and windbreaks, along with improved lighting, security and safety measures for vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The design also addresses storm water management and drainage issues to prevent occurrences such as the flooding that took place in July 2008 at the Wellness Centre.

Quad construction beginning

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ quadrangles, better known as quads, are visible expressions of a university community and can enhance the quality of student, staff and visitor experiences on campus.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge recognizes the importance of preserving public green space, and the Department of Facilities is embarking on the construction of a vibrant and unique outdoor gathering space that should be ready to use by fall 2012.

Construction on the quad will begin in early June with completion expected late August to early September.

Located just north of Markin Hall, at the site of the former track, the new trapezium-shaped courtyard will feature a core open space surrounded on three sides by small rolling hills to accommodate comfortable sitting and lounging, as well as connecting, well-lit sidewalks bordered by trees and plants. Development this summer will include grading and landscaping of the site and installation of sidewalks and lighting. Carl Granzow's Suitcase sculptures will be placed at the southeast section of the quad. The sculptures were once displayed on the south patio on Level 6 of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Centre for the Arts.

The proposed quad that will be constructed this summer on the area north of Markin Hall and east of Anderson Hall.

Future construction will include a continuous bench that will frame the perimeter of the core and offer a variety of seating areas.

The quad will function mainly as an open, casual gathering space with the ability to support various activities throughout the year. Its design allows the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to maintain its commitment to sustainable development while creating an iconic destination on campus. It also incorporates a storm water management system where low areas can capture and use storm water from the site and adjacent areas. These areas will contain a limited amount of maintained grass to allow more natural vegetation to grow.

Wind protection has also been considered for the site, which opens the door for collaboration with the art community to incorporate functional art as a wind shelter.

Parking lot construction at north entrance

Some short term pain will result in long term gain for visitors to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Construction to improve the parking lot on level 6 at the north end of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall is scheduled to begin Monday, July 18, thereby restricting access to the north entrance to construction traffic only for the better part of a month.

This project is being done to improve access to ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall and provide additional parking stalls. The area will be completely rehabilitated, including the removal and replacement of curbs and gutter and the provision of new lighting. Upon completion, parking will be provided for approximately 25 vehicles and will include areas for motorcycle and bicycle parking. It is expected that construction will be substantially completed by the middle of August.

During construction there will be heavy equipment on site and large portions of the roadway within this area will be affected. Access to the north entrance to ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall will be restricted to construction traffic only.

Efforts will be made to provide pedestrian access at the north end of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall for people who park in lot K, however there may be occasions when access is limited.

Signs will be posted near the site, and updates will be made available through the U of L website as required during construction.

Locker project to give cyclists alternatives

If you happen to see more bicycles on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus this spring, it might not be solely related to better weather conditions. Rather, it could be the more favourable conditions created for riders, thanks to a collaborative initiative between Sport and Recreation Services and Parking and Security Services.

A total of 30 new bike lockers, a shared purchase by the two campus units, will arrive on campus at the end of April, giving campus commuters more options should they choose to go green and leave their cars at home.

Would you rather leave your bike in exposed racks or take advantage of enclosed bike lockers? More choices will be available this spring with the addition of 30 new lockers to campus.

"Parking Services was introduced to bike lockers in 2009 and had the opportunity to meet with company representatives in the spring of 2010," says Dick Lutwick, parking manager. "At that time we decided to place five lockers on campus on a trial basis."

Located outside the 1st Choice Savings Centre, the five lockers served as a pilot project that was quickly accepted by the campus community.

"The original plan called for the manufacturer to leave them there for two months just to see what kind of response we'd get and that two months has stretched into a year," says Kevin McFadzen.
"We found five people who were interested in using them and after that I established a list of others who were wondering how they could get into a locker and whether we had plans to get more on campus."

McFadzen is an avid cyclist and had been introduced to the locker concept while attending the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Victoria. He had an interest in bringing them to the U of L and found like-minded attitudes in Parking Services.

"We view this investment as supporting green initiatives," says Lutwick of the joint $30,000 purchase. "It supports the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's commitment to environmental sustainability. By promoting the use of alternative transportation, we can accommodate a larger campus population without increasing our parking infrastructure."

But why are the lockers needed when there are ample bike racks at various campus locations?

"I've got bikes I don't ride to school because they're too expensive and I don't want them damaged, sitting in the elements all day or simply getting stolen," says McFadzen.

With the success of five lockers on campus, a survey went out to the U of L community about its appetite for more. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

"I was actually surprised from our survey last year," says McFadzen. "I'd always talked to people about them but I realized I was probably talking to a biased group, those who already ride bikes."

The lockers can fit an entire bike and is complete with hooks to hang gear such as helmets and wet clothes. They will be made available on a rental basis, much like gym lockers inside the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

"Some people would like to have a daily rental but that would get into substantial costs, having to have electronics out there to monitor that use," says McFadzen. "Plus, if someone rides in with an expensive bike expecting to have a locker and finds they are all taken, then what option does that leave them?"

Neither Lutwick nor McFadzen expect the entire campus to suddenly adopt bicycles as their preferred mode of transport because of this initiative but they see it as taking away obstacles for those inclined to go green.

"I'm hoping that it gets less cars coming to campus," says McFadzen. "We have 30 lockers, so in reality, probably 20 people who are already riding their bikes to campus will take advantage of these lockers. But if it adds another 10 bikes to campus and encourages 10 people to leave their cars at home, that's something. It's a start and hopefully it will catch on."

Parking lots to be renamed

Over the summer, all ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge parking lots will be renamed. However, instead of calling the West Lot "Rose", the Exploration Place Lot "Naomi" or the Parkway Service Complex lot "Laurel" (which could be even more challenging to explain than the present system) the lots will be given letter designations ranging from "A" to "P".

The previous system of naming lots by geographic location has consistently led to confusion, prompting Parking Services to reexamine how it designates names.

A list of lot names and their new letter designations follows. New parking passes will be issued with the revised letter designations.
