Horns basketball opens Canada West campaign

The Mike Hansen era begins this weekend for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's basketball program.

The ‘Horns will open the 2013-14 conference schedule on the road against the Fraser Valley Cascades and Trinity Western Spartans.

Tip-offs for the weekend are set at 8 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night respectively, with both games streamed online at http://canadawest.tv.

In addition to the leadership change, the roster received a complete overhaul with only five players from last season’s roster returning. A quartet of guards and reserve post remain with the program and will be led by seniors Morgan Duce, Logan Reiter and Alex Fletcher.

Reiter and Duce both averaged double digit points per game last season and will be counted on heavily to increase their scoring totals after the departure of the top two scorers from last season in Derek Waldner and Julian Spear Chief-Morris.

Among the nine newcomers to the program, Australian Brandon Brine, as well as ACAC all-stars Rob Olsen and Jared Baker, are expected to make a significant impact in their first season with the program. Post Brent Watkins could be a wildcard contributor for the Horns after transferring from Citrus College in California. Watkins, who did not play high school basketball, comes to the Horns with raw talent and will be relied on to be a presence in the paint. In his second season with Citrus last year, Watkins averaged 9.2 points and 7 rebounds per game while hitting nearly 75% of his shots from the field.

Pronghorn Women

Despite missing the playoffs for the third season in a row, there were a lot of positives to take away from the 2012-13 season.

In her first season at the helm of the Pronghorns women’s basketball program, Erin McAleenan led the Horns to their first double digit win total since the 1994-95 season, but a duplication of the 2012-13 season will be a tough task for the Pronghorns in the always tough Canada West conference.

The Horns will open the 2013-14 conference schedule this weekend on the road traveling to British Columbia to face the Fraser Valley Cascades and Trinity Western Spartans.

Gone from last season are post Erin Skippon, forward Steph Inman and utility guard Kara Henry. While Skippon was only with the program for one season, her leadership and post presence will be dearly missed.

While the voids left will be hard to fill, the Pronghorns return their top two scorers from last season in Ali Cameron and post Kim Veldman. Cameron, a pure scorer, returns for her fourth season and will look to build off her career best 15 points per game average last season.

Veldman, who averaged nearly a double-double last season, will be leaned on heavily at both ends of the floor, while senior guard Katlyn Olsen will also be counted on to help lead the young squad. With six true freshmen cracking the Pronghorns roster, there will be some growing pains along the way.

Southern Alberta product Mariah Miller has had a nice start to her collegiate career, recording a double-double in only her third preseason game.

Guards Erin James, Sara Simovic and Kendra Lee will all see significant time as freshmen and will need to make significant contributions if the Horns are going to duplicate last season’s record.

Tip-off for Friday’s game versus the Cascades is set for 6 p.m. PST, while Saturday’s game versus the Spartans will go at 5 p.m.. Both games will be streamed live on http://canadawest.tv

Summer painting schedule

Each year, the Department of Building Maintenance hires students to perform the painting of classrooms, labs, hallways, classrooms and other areas requiring a fresh coat of paint.

Products used in this project are environmentally friendly and safe for workers and those occupying adjacent spaces. The paint products contain no or low (VOC's) Volatile Organic Compound. There may be a faint odour from time to time and those with a high sensitivity to products of this nature should be aware.

The following is a tentative schedule and not included in this schedule is the UCA Mechanical Upgrade Project involving the painting of 35 to 40 offices on levels 6, 7 and 8.

Wellness Centre ready for summer projects

The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness has been a welcome modern addition to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Physical Education building, but not much has changed to the core of the nearly 40-year-old facility. That will change over the summer as the PE building gets a facelift.

Beginning in early May, the existing mechanical and electrical systems will be upgraded, as well as some much needed renovations to several areas of Levels 0, 1 and 2.

"It'll be a much more comfortable facility in terms of climate. It's going to be significantly brighter," says project manager Jason Baranec.

The interior of the old Physical Education Building will be brought up to standards with the new section of the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness.

Aside from a few minor restorations, the PE building hasn't changed since the 1970s when it was first built. When complete, the renovations will reflect the Wellness Centre, creating a more cohesive environment.

"The driver for this project is the mechanical, electrical and infrastructure upgrades, and then we're doing what we can architecturally to make it look as though the Wellness Centre and the PE building were all built at the same time," says Baranec.

Renovations include new doors and exteriors to the southeast, southwest and northeast entrances, and linear solar tubes, similar to skylights, which will illuminate the main concrete staircase in the PE building.

"It achieves the same purpose as a skylight except without having to cut too much concrete," says Baranec. "There's going to be a lot of natural daylight."

The kinesiology research labs on Level 2 will also be updated with new paint, lighting and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems. Offices on the same level will receive new flooring in addition to the upgrades. Room PE250 will get new windows, and PE275 will see new carpet and millwork. Day-use change rooms on Level 1 will also get an overhaul. The addition of "info walls" which integrate seating and bulletin boards will provide more gathering spaces in the building.

The majority of the work is expected to be complete before the start of classes in September.

The project was made possible with a $5.6 million grant from the Alberta government.

New access points will be created, including ramp access, to the southwest entrance.

The creation of a new sports medicine clinic is another construction highlight happening in the Wellness Centre this summer.

The clinic will be located in the PE100 space below the south end of the running track. Once complete, it will house up to four physicians and associated support staff. The space will feature physiotherapy and exam rooms, treatment areas and doctor's offices.

Project Manager Gene Lublinkhof says the clinic has always been in the plans for the Centre.

"There was space allotted for it from day one," he says.

As with the PE building renovations, the clinic's design will also reflect the rest of the Wellness Centre façade. Construction is slated to begin in May, with completion anticipated in the fall.

Although construction on both projects will be ongoing throughout the summer, arrangements have been made to cease work during Convocation and the Alberta Summer Games to avoid disruption.

Horns lock up Veldman

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's basketball team locked up its second recruit for the 2010-11 season, addressing one of its biggest needs with the addition of two-time Deep South 2A MVP Kim Veldman of Immanuel Christian High School.

A six-foot-two inch post player, Veldman averaged 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game in her final high school season. She also led the Eagles to their third consecutive 2A South Zone and provincial championship titles. For the second consecutive season, she was named the Deep South 2A MVP.

The top teams in the Canada West Conference all have big presences under the basket, something the Horns have lacked in previous years. Veldman will be a welcome addition to the Horns front court.

"Kim has some great skills on the perimeter and her height will allow her to contribute in the paint as well," says Horns head coach Donna Branch. "She has a very technically sound shot and knows how to crash those boards."

In 2008-09, she was also selected as the 2A Player of the Year at the Shooting Stars Showcase and has played in the Jr. Horns program for the past four years.

"She is very athletic and we are excited about her developing into a player who is a threat from anywhere," continued Branch. "Her height will also allow us to improve our defensive strategies at the CIS level."

Tanabe captures essence of landscape

Takao Tanabe is one of the many outstanding artists featured in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's renowned Art Gallery. The Gallery, located behind the Sorel Etrog Moses sculpture in the Centre for Fine Arts on level 6, houses one of the finest art collections in the entire country.

Takao Tanabe

Born in Prince Rupert in 1926, Takao Tanabe spent the early part of his life interned with his family and other Japanese-Canadians in the B.C. Interior as a result of the Second World War. After the end of the war and having worked several menial jobs, Tanabe decided to go to art school. Sixty years later, Tanabe's work can be found in more than 50 public and 120 corporate collections around the world.

Tanabe was known throughout the '50s and '60s as an abstract painter, studying with such well-known abstract expressionists as Hans Hofmann. Tanabe's artistic development underwent a dramatic shift in the late 1960s when he began to move away from abstraction towards a concentration on landscape painting. The artist sought a simple landscape form, which he could execute in a spontaneous manner . . . one 'go' or one application of paint.

Throughout his career, Takao Tanabe has received numerous awards, including Doctor of Letters (Hon.) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, Doctor of Fine Arts (Hon.) from The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, and the Order of British Columbia. His work and the example set by an esteemed career as an artist, art educator and administrator were recognized by the Governor General in April of 1999 when Tanabe was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2003, Tanabe was the recipient of The Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. Since 1980, the artist has lived and worked in Errington on Vancouver Island.

Tanabe will be one of the featured artists at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Main Gallery in A Little History on the Prairies, opening in January 2011.

Snap, Crackle, Pop explodes on the 2010 scene

The new year comes in with a bang at the U of L Art Gallery as Snap, Crackle, Pop opens with a reception on Friday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m. in the U of L Main Gallery.

This contemporary group exhibition, curated by Gallery Director/Curator Dr. Josephine Mills, showcases the work of past and present southern Alberta artists who explore the iconography, materials and visual aesthetic of popular culture.

The works Mills has chosen for the exhibition are light-hearted and accessible, while also calling to mind current events as portrayed by modern media.

"There are disaster-inspired and macabre themes throughout the works, but with element of optimism," explains Mills. "We live in a world surrounded by doom and gloom – from the economy to global warming – but the artists in this exhibition find optimism through playing with pop culture."

The exhibit includes work by U of L alumni Shanell Papp and Len Komanac.

"Shanell works with fabric and textiles and this exhibition features her embroidered life-size human skeletons and crocheted blood-pools," says Mills. "Len's pieces depict four disasters in a trailer park such as a giant squid rising from a kiddy-pool to angry trees seeking revenge for chopping one of their own into firewood."

"Art duo Dave & Jenn create fantastic landscapes by layering paint within acrylic resin and by drawing inspiration from the Group of Seven's famous imagery," she adds.

Dave & Jenn will give a talk in Art NOW on Jan. 15 at noon in the Recital Hall.

Other featured works include Christopher Moore's sculptures of military paraphernalia covered in hot pink flocking and Lisa Brawn's highly stylized woodcarvings of Canadian icons and macho men. A series of paintings entitled Erstaz Bats by Jason Mathis references both comic book culture and pop art's devotion to multiples; each panel depicts one of Mathis' friends, dressed in a Batman costume.

Snap, Crackle, Pop is on display in the U of L Main Gallery and Helen Christou Gallery from Jan. 15 through Feb. 26. The Main Gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings.

Logan pulls inspiration from Norse mythology

Darcy Logan's newest installation, Knowing/Gnawing, in the Helen Christou Gallery, presents his most recent paintings alongside a selection of works from the U of L collection, which provide context and inspiration for his art practice.

"The works are by Canadian artists including Alan Harding MacKay, Rebecca Anweiler, Renee Van Halm, William MacDonnell and Jerome Witvleit," says Logan, who earned his Bachelor of Fine arts in Art at the U of L in 2002 and is the curator at the Bowman Arts Centre.

"I wanted the exhibition to be about bodies of artistic work."

In addition to paintings, Logan also included a set of nine altered encyclopedias, which were made specifically for this exhibition, to work conjointly with the MacKay books as a way to 'read' the exhibition.

"It was important to have this reading mediated not by traditional didactics, but by altered books as re-contextualized bodies of knowledge," says Logan. "My current body of work, entitled Know/Gnaw/Naglfar, uses myth as a metaphor to explore the nature of knowledge and ideas.

"In Scandinavian mythology, the Naglfar is a ship being constructed in the underworld and the name is Old Norse for "nail ferry," which speaks to the rivets that hold the planks together, and a description of its mythic purpose."

It seems the building materials for this ship are the fingernails and toenails of the dead, the detritus of the body.

"When enough discordant people have died and the necessary amount of raw material gathered, the ship will be completed, freed from its moorings, and carry the forces of chaos to ensure the end of the world," he says. "This story provoked a string of associations for me, and gave me pause to reflect on how knowledge and ideologies are defined and constructed, and, ultimately, the consequences that follow in their wake. These are often disastrous, and result from the excesses of philosophical and ideological certainty, or the dangerous limits of knowledge."

In keeping with the myth, Logan's works contain human fingernails and toenails, embedded in the paint.

"My works are as much assemblages as they are paintings," he says. "I use layers of encrusted earth, resins and rusting agents to create the finished pieces. I often carve into the drying mud, leaving parts depressed and others in high relief. I am interested in compositional tension and attempt to explore and exploit normally incongruous elements on the canvas."

These elements can be the tensions between the thick, matte appearance of the mud and the thin reflective quality of resin, the tension between illusionist representation and passages of implied abstract space, or the tension between the modern and primitive nature of the materials.

Knowing/Gnawing is in the Helen Christou Gallery until Jan. 3, 2010.

Student spearheads Project Paintbrush

The opportunity to make a world of difference with a simple can of paint comes in the form of Project Paintbrush, a summer initiative that promises to build community.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management Co-op student Derek Prance is coordinating the summer project under the auspices of Volunteer Lethbridge. They are currently looking for volunteer painters to assist with Project Paintbrush.

The project helps boost community pride by having volunteers paint the exterior of homes for individuals who are physically and financially unable to complete the task. Volunteers have the opportunity to round up a painting team of relatives, friends, co-workers, or even join an already assembled team. After that, a smile and a one or two day commitment during July or August is all that is needed.

Each summer, individuals, community groups, and corporate employees volunteer their time to paint homes and fences in our community. Project Paintbrush made its debut in 2006 when a total of six projects were completed. Four more projects in 2007 and another five in 2008 were subsequently completed and Volunteer Lethbridge looks to manage even more this summer.

Billy McCarroll

Billy J. McCarroll was born in Santa Barbara, Cal. in 1937. He received a golf scholarship to California State ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in 1962 and played varsity golf while pursuing a BA in visual arts.

In 1969, McCarroll completed his MA at California State ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, and two years later joined the Department of Art at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

McCarroll taught printmaking, drawing and painting from 1971 to 1994 and was director/curator at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Gallery from 1972 to 1981, during the formative years of the collection.

McCarroll continues to be an active member of the southern Alberta art community, participating in collaborative projects such as The McIntyre Ranch Project and group exhibitions, as well as numerous solo exhibitions. McCarroll is also an accomplished jazz musician and continues to be an avid golfer.

McCarroll's early work focused on procedural abstraction, as he created paintings composed of layer upon layer of paint, building up textured surfaces. His practice then became preoccupied with geometric abstraction until 1983, when Calgary artist (and McCarroll's frequent golf partner) John Will gave McCarroll a copy of the instructional book, Sam Snead's Natural Golf.

McCarroll began appropriating images from the book as the focus of his paintings, prints and drawings – and has continued to do so for over 20 years. His use of stylized shapes, thick black outlines and vibrant colour palette often cause McCarroll's work to be categorized as Pop Art, referencing figurative art of the 1960s that drew on advertising imagery.

Much of the critical response to McCarroll's work has made a link between his subject matter and a philosophical life approach. The challenges inherent in the game of golf are often presented as metaphors for the wins and losses we face in contemporary life.

It has also been suggested, however, that McCarroll himself somewhat rejects the deep symbolism imparted upon his work. It is not difficult to imagine advice he has imparted on the golf course as also influencing his art practice: "analysis leads to paralysis, keep it in one piece, stop thinking so much".
