Barendregt follows the science when studying climate change

Dr. René Barendregt (BSc ’71) will tell you he hasn’t gone all that far in his life, but it’s relative to how “far” is defined.

An esteemed and published researcher, Barendregt is a 35-year member of the Department of Geography who has been around the world studying the natural climate cycling of our planet.

“I tell my friends and students, I was born right over there in the Galt Hospital, or museum,” he says, pointing from his office window across the Oldman River valley. “Now, I work less than a kilometre from where I was born, so I haven’t gone far in life.”

An esteemed and published researcher, Barendregt is a 35-year member of the Department of Geography who has been around the world studying the natural climate cycling of our planet. In December, he will continue ongoing fieldwork in the Patagonia region of South America. Barendregt has most certainly gone far.

On Thursday, Nov. 23, he spoke as part of the PUBlic Professor Series lectures, presenting to a large community crowd, Global Climate Archives in Mud and Rock: The Magnetic Recorder is Always On (Somewhere)!

Building off the global warming debate, Barendregt’s talk discussed climate change in a historical perspective, maintaining that the current debate over carbon footprints and greenhouse gases must also recognize the historically natural cycles of climate change that have occurred over the last five million years.

“We live in a very dynamic environment on this planet and we should expect change,” says Barendregt. “Sea level will not stay where it is today and if you’re going to build your house one metre above sea level, at some point you may have to move that house. Change is inevitable but there’s no doubt that 7.5 billion people leave a huge footprint and that is added to the natural cycle of climate. It’s important for us to understand the cycling of climate because whatever we contribute, adds to that natural cycle.”

Barendregt grew up on the family farm northeast of Picture Butte. As a Grade 12 student he toured a fledgling U of L campus located on the grounds of Lethbridge College. The next year, he enrolled and began what was initially an interest in becoming a social studies teacher. His interest in both history and geography eventually led to a switch in majors and his career path was established.

“My father said if I don’t go to school, I’m going to be on the shovel all my life, and it turns out I’ve been on the shovel and pick all my life – but as a geologist instead,” he says of his dad, a Dutch immigrant who, before emigrating to Canada, had farmed the same Patagonia region Barendregt now studies, back in the 1930s.

Following the U of L, Barendregt studied at the Technological ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Delft and then Queen’s ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. He taught at San Francisco State ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for five years until coming back to southern Alberta in 1982 when he was hired on at the U of L.

While Barendregt has worked in a variety of exotic locales, and met people such as Dian Fossey while conducting his studies, the plains of Alberta were not only his original inspiration, they continue to provide a rich resource for his research.

“We think of the Prairies as bald, flat and not interesting and when you drive from Winnipeg to Lethbridge you’ll come across a lot of glacial lake plain, but it’s when you dive down into the valleys, the badlands, the coulees and the slopes of the Sweetgrass hills, you realize what a fascinating history there is here,” he says.

Barendregt is eyeing retirement in the next couple years but it will likely mean only from the classroom. He still has a yen to travel and dig in the dirt throughout the world, unearthing the history it holds and lending a scientific voice to the climate change debate that continues to rage. He sees disturbing trends but is surprisingly not pessimistic.

“Humans are incredibly adaptable and they have been throughout earth history. They’ll have no choice but to adapt to different climates,” he says. “Sea ice cover is diminishing rapidly and maybe in our lifetime we could see summer sea ice as largely gone. We see these changes, they are real, but the big natural cycles set the stage and then we continue to add to it – and that’s not insignificant. The science is the best we can do to try and figure this out. I’ll be the first to admit that we have lots of things to learn about this wonderful planet.”

PUBlic Professor Series spawns a spinoff

Although Faculty of Arts & Science professors could be labelled serious, scholarly types by day, the occasion of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s 50th anniversary has given them a reason to have a little fun while still imparting their knowledge.

The PUBlic Professor Series: 5-Minute Edition, is designed to showcase the diversity of research interests within the Faculty in an entertaining format. Each of 10 professors will have five minutes and a maximum of 15 PowerPoint slides to do a presentation on their research. The slides will automatically advance every 20 seconds, requiring the speaker to keep pace.

“After five minutes is over, I’m cutting them off,” says Dr. Kevin McGeough (BA ’96), a U of L geography professor and moderator of the event. “That makes it fun because there’s a kind of panicked element to the presentation. It’s especially fun for professors because we’re not known for being concise in our comments. That lightning-fast approach makes it interesting for people to watch.”

The professors who have agreed to participate include Dr. Jay Gamble (English), Dr. René Barendregt (Geography), Dr. Sergio Pellis (Neuroscience), Dr. Ute Kothe (Biochemistry), Dr. Omar Rodriguez (Modern Languages), Dr. Jennifer Copeland (Kinesiology), Dr. Janay Nugent (History), Dr. Locke Spencer (Physics), Dr. Maura Hanrahan (Native American Studies) and Dr. Hillary Rodrigues (Religious Studies).

“One of the things we’re looking for is that these research presentations be of interest to the public and to people who aren’t specialists in the area of expertise,” says McGeough. “That matches the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s liberal education approach where we have all sorts of different disciplinary backgrounds and we all contribute to a larger conversation.”

McGeough has some experience with the format from a session he participated in at an event hosted by the U of L Faculty Association. He has a few tips for his colleagues who’ll be participating.

“Talk quickly, have a sense of what you want to say before you get up there and pick your slides well. If you lose track of where you are, good slides can cue you to get back on track or find a new track to go down,” says McGeough.

The PUBlic Professor Series: 5-Minute Edition is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. in B756 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall. McGeough says the event will be informal and people are welcome to drop in on the session even after it’s started.

“We especially hope that alumni will come and experience this event. This will be a fun way to spend the afternoon,” says McGeough, adding everyone is welcome to attend.

René Barendregt (BASc '71)

René Barendregt has been a faculty member of the Faculty of Arts & Science at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge since 1982 and took on the role of associate dean in 2001. Dedicated to his profession and respected by his peers, Barendregt's work in the field of physical geography is currently funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada. In addition to his research, Barendregt has served the U of L community as a member of the Board of Governors, the Senate and the General Faculties Council.

Viola Cassis (BA '97)

Viola Cassis started her career in international humanitarian work with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), where she was instrumental in revising the organization's guidelines on the prevention and response to sexual- and gender-based violence, and helped to develop policies to ensure gender-equitable access to UN refugee interventions. Cassis currently works with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and has been involved in various CIDA programs in Afghanistan. She has made field visits to Kabul and Kandahar to liaise with Canadian Forces, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and other government agencies.

Marilyn Smith (BFA '96) (Multidisciplinary)

Marilyn Smith has more than 30 years of experience in the arts and culture sector and is currently the executive director of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG). Since Smith took on this role in 1999, SAAG has increased revenue over 200 per cent, while membership, programming and sponsorship have also increased. Recently Smith oversaw renovations of SAAG and implemented a three-year strategic plan designed to capitalize on the new facilities. Last fall Smith was honoured with the 2011 Rosza Award for Excellence in Arts Management from the Rosza Foundation.

Gayle Strikes With A Gun (BEd '88)

Raised on the Piikani Nation in southern Alberta, Gayle Strikes With A Gun has been a leader in education for 25 years. After completing her bachelor of education, she worked as the project co-ordinator for the Four Worlds development project, an initiative aimed at helping Blood and Peigan women develop the skills and training necessary to prepare them for post-secondary education at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Over the course of her career, she worked as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and acting superintendent in schools across Alberta and in the Northwest Territories. In 2011, Strikes With A Gun was elected the first female chief of the Piikani Nation where she remains committed to helping her people's youth.

Bruce Thurston (BASc '78)

With close to 35 years of experience in business, Bruce Thurston brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to his teaching role in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management. He is also currently the CEO and president at Management Resource Services, a company that provides management consulting and training in leadership
development, organizational change, workforce diversity and staff development. In addition to his professional responsibilities, Thurston has generously served the community by volunteering his time with local organizations including the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, the Society of Management Accountants of Alberta and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.

Keith Walker (BASc '79)

As the director of Library Services at Medicine Hat College, Keith Walker is respected for the innovation and passion he brings to his profession. As the first college librarian to serve as president of the Canadian Library Association in the organization's history, Walker successfully led a major review and restructuring that saw the organization's first balanced budget in over a decade and a doubling of memberships. In 2003, Walker received the Community and Technical College Libraries Outstanding Academic Librarian Award and the Industry Canada Award. The following year, he was honoured with the College and Technical Libraries Innovation Achievement Award.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 9 at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballrooms.
