It might not sound like a pitch for a scientific study but
Dr. Zen Faulkes (BSc '89) is like any other researcher – he's just found a new way to grab your attention.

Faulkes, an associate professor of biology at The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Texas-Pan American, has just concluded his second SciFund Challenge fundraising project through the crowd-funding site rockethub.com. On each occasion, Faulkes earned enough donated cash to fund his projects, which involve the behavioural characteristics of crayfish and sand crabs.

"It's a concept that every charity has been using for years," says Faulkes, whose interest in aquatic species was cultivated at the U of L by Dr. Jennifer Mather (psychology). "It's pretty simple, get everybody to kick in a small amount of cash and then pool the money for a common aid."

It's a model that has been adopted with great success by artists, and one that science is just beginning to test.

"It is an ideological change in that there has been some resistance to self promotion to people outside of your professional community," says Faulkes of the public pitch concept. "It's not a change in that pretty much every scientist is going to tell you the importance of self promotion, networking and getting your work out there. The only difference is a slight shift in target."

Dr. Zen Faulkes with one of his Amazon Crayfish.

Faulkes uses an Indiana Jones-themed video in one of his pitches (Doctor Zen and the Amazon Crayfish Civilization) and admits it is offbeat.

"It's goofy, quite intentionally so, but that's just me and I'm not pretending that my approach is going to be the right approach for everyone," he says, adding that people don't necessarily have to understand your science to fund it, rather they might just follow it because it's cool.

"That's something I think we have undervalued in the past. People will support stuff just because they think it's cool," he says. "I think that has been highly underestimated, the willingness of people to support things just because."

Originally from Lethbridge, Faulkes moved around a lot as a kid before eventually returning to take his undergraduate studies at the U of L. He credits Mather for setting him on his career path, when he simply expressed an interest in the pending arrival of some octopuses for one of her studies.

"I was just talking to her about class and she mentioned she was getting some octopuses in and I made the mistake of saying, "That sounds interesting", and suddenly the door closed behind me and before I knew what was going on, she had recruited me," he laughs.

She later nominated Faulkes for a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) grant and he was on his way. That opportunity to participate in research as an undergraduate student would shape his studies years later.

"I'm in a university that has, in some ways, a similar kind of mindset to the
U of L," says Faulkes. "It has graduate studies but is still mostly an undergraduate institution, and people wondered how I could conduct studies without doctoral students at my disposal. I told them I came from a place where you can work with undergraduate students and have a research career and you can do research that's the equal of any place in the world. That's one of the things I learned from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge."

Faulkes will head to Florida in November to conduct his research funded by the SciFund Challenge. His website at doctorzen.net details his studies, while his SciFund projects can be viewed at www.rockethub.com.

This story first appeared in the June 2012 issue of the Legend. The stories took on even more meaning to Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge master's student Ainslee Kimmel, who is completing her thesis by studying the effects of wildfire and the resiliency of people who experience its wrath.

Kimmel's study focus is on the 2009 West Kelowna fire but she couldn't help but draw similarities to the stories she hears about the residents of Slave Lake.

Master's student Ainslee Kimmel pursues a Master in Education degree while working with noted health sciences researcher Dr. Judith Kulig.

"I think a big thing I see that's similar between the two is the factor of the unknown," she says. "A lot of people said the most stressful thing about the fire was the act of being evacuated, and then hearing reports on what parts of town were and were not affected by the fire, not knowing if they had or had not lost everything."

Kimmel, a Calgary native, came to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ with a bachelor of psychology degree from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Victoria. Her goal is to eventually become a registered psychologist, which might seem contrary to her master's work (MEd in the Faculty of Education) at first glance, but it's all by design. She chose the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge over other graduate programs because it is allowing her a more hands-on, practical approach to her vocation.

"The other schools I was accepted to were more research oriented and I wanted to finish my master's with a practical skillset, and I found that here," she says. "It allows me to focus more on counselling as opposed to a master's in health psychology, which puts you in the stream for studying a PhD and possibly teaching."

Working with supervisor Dr. Judith Kulig, an expert in wildfire research and community resiliency from a health sciences perspective, Kimmel sees the practical potential of her findings.

"I just want to know how people cope after something like a wildfire event," she says. "Wildfires in Canada are increasingly a big issue and if we can determine how people cope, hopefully we can develop strategies to help people function better after a wildfire."

Kimmel actually worked with Kulig as a research assistant for a year prior to the beginning of her thesis. Despite the fact that she's pursuing a master's of education degree, she was given special dispensation to have Kulig as her supervisor. She travelled with Kulig to conduct interviews and acquire data following a wildfire event in Barriere, B.C., and is using that experience to guide her through her study of the West Kelowna event.

"Through the work I did with Dr. Kulig, we saw people in Barriere who made it through the fire without losing their homes and yet they had lingering symptoms of depression, while some of those who lost their homes were able to bounce back quicker," says Kimmel. "Understanding how that works and how we can help these people on various levels is the ultimate goal."

While Kulig's research emphasis focuses on community resiliency as a whole, Kimmel's approach, as a psychologist in training, is more specific.

"I felt I could pursue something more on the individual aspects of wildfire," she says, noting that her findings, although preliminary, are not entirely negative. "I'm also looking at how people grow from the experience as a result. It's termed post-traumatic growth in the literature and discusses how people can go through something traumatic and months and even years later benefit from it in terms of developing closer relationships, a better attitude on life and a feeling of strength and confidence that they were able to get through it."

To date, Kimmel has made one trip to Kelowna, interviewing a host of government and firefighting personnel. She expects to return to complete her interviews this fall and will finish writing her thesis over the winter. Kimmel says her excellent relationship with Kulig has been integral to the process.

"She's such a caring person and is really there to help a student. She's also always included me, in terms of authorship, on anything we've worked on," says Kimmel. "We get along so well on a personal level and I don't know if everybody has that with their supervisor – it really can make a difference."

Kimmel's research was made possible by a $17,500 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grant.

GET THE FACTS

· Kimmel's study actually includes three fire events in and around West Kelowna in 2009, including: Terrace Mountain Fire (9,277 hectares burned); Glenrosa Fire (400 hectares); and the Rose Valley Fire (200 hectares).

· Only four structures were lost in West Kelowna, despite the potential of losing many more that were threatened, and Kimmel says her preliminary findings show a sense of pride from residents over how the crisis was handled.

· Kimmel accompanied Dr. Kulig to Texas to present findings from her research at an international conference.

This story first appeared in the Legend. The video below was shown at the event.

As strong supporters of education and youth, the Cades have established the Bill and Elsa Salazar Cade Scholarship in Evolutionary Biology at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, the endowment of which has reached nearly $130,000. They have both contributed to countless student fundraisers and have volunteered their time with many local organizations, including the Lethbridge Youth Foundation, Alberta Science Foundation and the Lethbridge United Way. The unique donation raised more than $30,000 through ticket sales to students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members.

For those looking to start their philanthropic journey, Elsa has some advice: "Get involved in your community and in what interests you," she says. Several gifts remind him of this: a pair of eagle feathers given to him by a student representative of the
U of L Native American Students' Association, as well as commemorative images of his induction into the Kainai chieftainship.

SKELETONS
Quick: which one is the turtle? Not many people get it right, and most people have no clue what the skeletons are, unless of course, they ask.

CHIRPING TOYS
As people found out about Cade's research, cricket toys started to appear. He uses them as a teaching tool for young children (and some adults) who visit. The most important fact people need to remember is that Disney got it wrong: Jiminy Cricket did not have six legs, as most insects would; he had four. And, crickets don't wear gloves.

Cricket cages come in all shapes and sizes.

PRICKLY CORNER
You don't want to trip and fall into the northeast corner of the office lest you meet this cactus. Brought from Texas years ago, it has now reached beyond the ceiling multiple times and its offspring can be found throughout the U of L campus.

ELEPHANT DUNG
Collected in Africa, this specimen the size of a bowling ball is from a herd of elephants that came though Cade's camp at 4:30 a.m. in search of food. To distract them, Cade got out of his tent, waved a flashlight in one of the elephant's face and tossed rocks at it. By startling it, Cade narrowly prevented his truck from being wrecked.

CRICKET CAGES
As a researcher of crickets, Cade's natural interest in these tiny, vocal insects and their communication and mating habits is well known. For years, people have given him cricket enclosures, ranging from fancy to plain, which are used in some cultures to keep crickets for good luck or to transport crickets en route to cricket fights.

AUTOGRAPHED MEMORABILIA
Reflecting Cade's Pronghorn pride, this autographed basketball was a gift from the 2009/2010 men's team and was signed by the players as well as the1999/2000 men's team during a recent alumni reunion and game.

THE KILLING TRAIL
A paperback western story about a man named Jubal Cade who is "Trained to Heal but Born to Kill" sits on Cade's desk. The fact that Cade shares his last name with a character in a pulp fiction western makes him laugh.

CRICKET SYMPHONY
This trio of green crickets was a gift from a colleague at Brock Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, Josephine Meeker, who encouraged Cade to move forward in his career and run for dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science at Brock Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, a position he formerly held that served as a stepping-stone to his presidency at the U of L.

ANTILOCAPRA AMERICANA
Cade's interest in the U of L pronghorn symbol started as simple curiosity then grew. Throughout the 2001 mayoralty campaign I had promoted the concept of a community-driven economic development model. Bill and several of his friends made it clear that it was not only a good idea, it was one they expected me to implement forthwith. And with Bill's guidance and support, Economic Development Lethbridge moved from vision to reality.

I was deeply moved at the time that a U of L president should be so engaged in his community. As I was to learn, this was just the first of a series of partnerships between the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and the city that Bill had a hand in creating.

What kind of president has Bill been? Energetic, charismatic, passionate, considerate and above all, focused on the needs of students. Bill and Elsa have played important parts in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge story over the last 10 years, but they have also earned the respect and love of people they have come in contact with throughout the community. Good luck, my friend!

Robert Tarleck, Ako-taosi
Mayor, City of Lethbridge

What I appreciate most about Bill was that he was a great and enthusiastic supporter of the community and local projects. He considered the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ to be a partner with the Lethbridge community at large, and was always prepared to step up and get involved.

Paul Pharo
President 2009/2010, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce;
U of L Senate Member

I have watched the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Alumni Association (ULAA) grow into a significant contributor to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. I recognize and thank you for your support, encouragement and participation in the ULAA endeavours to grow within its own parameters and to participate to make the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ better and stronger. Thank you for allowing me to be a friend. Good health as you proceed into the next stage of your active life.

Bob Hironaka (Dsc '02)
Chancellor emeritus

My first meeting with Bill was in my office. He insisted on coming to me. How about that! To me, it was a generous thing to do and indicated his strong character personified by a professional humbleness.

Bill Cade was a great president of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. I thank him and Elsa and won't ever forget them.

Clint Dunford
Former MLA, Lethbridge West

Bill Cade has the best memory for names! He can walk into a room and address each person by their correct name, and if he is meeting you for the first time, you can bet he will remember it the next time you meet. I was on a shoot at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Theatre and Bill walked by and said, "Hi, Dory…Hi, Ted!" Ted, our cameraperson, was completely floored that Bill would remember his name! That is a real gift!

Dory Rossiter
CTV Lethbridge; former U of L Senate member

I have many reasons to thank Bill Cade, but the one that has meant the most to me is the interest and support he has shown for my mother and her work over the years. My mother is the Yiddish-language writer Chava Rosenfarb. Yiddish and the rich literature and culture associated with it are little known in Alberta. This is not surprising since the language itself is dying, a victim of the Holocaust. Today, there are few speakers and fewer readers. To have someone promote and encourage the work of a Yiddish writer the way Bill has done is truly remarkable and truly praiseworthy. To date, the U of L is the only university in Canada to have given an honorary degree to a Yiddish writer, despite the fact that Canada has been host to a vibrant Yiddish culture for more than a hundred years. I have no words to express how very moving this is to me and how grateful I am.

Dr. Goldie Morgentaler
Professor, Department of English

Bill's attribute of treating everybody with respect has endeared him to friends and business associates alike. When we met with a number of people in Ottawa promoting the U of L he impressed everyone with his passion and demeanour.

The first time I was in his office at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ my questions regarding his collection of crickets quickly led to a lesson on the reproductive machinations of the species.

Bill took great delight in introducing future Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge students to the fascinating world of crickets.

I'm not sure how many people know that Bill is a hot rodder at heart and spent time at the drag strip in his day. I promised to take him for a blast in my 1967 GTX – haven't done that yet but will.

Dr. Cade! Make sure you take the time to reflect on what you have meant to the U of L and to southern Alberta, how much better the institution and all of us are for having you come to town. I hope you and your wonderful bride continue to enjoy peace and happiness.

Rick Casson
MP, Lethbridge; Former U of L employee

I organized a luncheon for a visiting Chinese delegation that Bill attended. Roast beef was served along with a side of horseradish. A dish of horseradish was placed with the starting salad at every seat during the meal. Bill is very charismatic and of course was the focus of our luncheon. As we started the meal, he picked up his dish of horseradish and poured it all over his salad (thinking it was salad dressing). Before we knew it, every visitor from China was doing the same! In the following moments, everyone was digging into their salads and not understanding our instructions of "it's for the beef." Garden salad is not served in China and with the horseradish it must have been an unusual culinary experience for our guests – but a great story for us!

Laurel Corbiere
Manager, International Centre for Students

Bill at convocation is a dynamo. He rises to the occasion and gives a barnburner of a speech. We all feel better about ourselves and stand a little taller.

Dr. John C. Poulsen
Assistant Dean, Faculty of Education

I remember when Bill told the story of the streaker in the new stadium.... After an enthusiastic monologue of the young man's escapade, without cracking a smile, and with his deep Texas accent, he said, "Of course my official stance is I am shocked and appalled." Most of us were nearly in tears laughing by this point.

Mari Daunt
U of L Senate Member

"The thing I appreciated most about Bill was that not only did he understand what his job was and did it well, but he understood what his job wasn't, and he did that well, too. He and Elsa will be missed...."

Richard Davidson
U of L Chancellor

Bill Cade… My heartfelt congratulations on your upcoming retirement from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.
Students, staff and the community of Lethbridge have all benefited greatly from your leadership, ingenuity and success. You can take pride in everything you and this institution have accomplished during your tenure.
Under your leadership, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's offerings have evolved to include the first-time admission of PhD students to the School of Graduate Studies. Program decisions like these will help the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ to continue to prosper as part of Campus Alberta.

Please accept my best wishes for a fulfilling and healthy retirement. Wherever the road takes you, may happiness follow.

Ed Stelmach
Premier of Alberta

It would be impossible to list all of Bill's accomplishments here. For me, his most enduring legacy will be the passion and joy that were always contagious whenever I spoke with him. I will miss working with him in our official capacities, but I'll always consider Bill a personal friend.

Greg Weadick (Bsc '77)
MLA, Lethbridge WEST

Five years ago, when I was being recruited for the presidency of Lethbridge College, I did lots of research on the institution and the community. When I found out that Dr. Bill Cade was a fellow Longhorn (we're both graduates of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Texas at Austin) I gave him a call to find out his perspective on Lethbridge as well as his impression of the relationship between the U of L and Lethbridge College.

I remember I was between flights and Bill spent 30 or 40 minutes with me on the phone, answering my questions and providing his insights. He also directed me to a U of L student who had transferred over from the College who was very helpful in providing further information.

I have very much enjoyed working with Bill. . . He is a colleague and a friend. I hope we'll still have a chance to catch up as he continues with his teaching and research at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. Conversely, I would be happy to visit him in San Antonio, perhaps we could take in a football game at UT. Hook 'em, Horns!

Dr. Tracy Edwards
President and CEO, Lethbridge College

Bill Cade is one of that rare breed who truly understands all of the roles they're expected to play in their position. He's equal parts academic, administrator, scientist and statesman. And he can express his passion in each of those roles in a way that everyone can understand, appreciate and share. He can even make crickets sound exciting!

Never did I ever imagine I would develop such a strong respect and working relationship with someone whose passion is bugs – or, as Bill would say, the Phylum Arthropoda – however, that is exactly what happened. During Bill's presidency, I have come to respect and admire his knowledge, understanding, passion and commitment to post-secondary education. Bill has been a tireless advocate for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge and our province's overall post-secondary system. His contributions to improving both are immeasurable. Best wishes, Bill, in your upcoming professional endeavours, and thank you for your guidance and leadership.

Rob Renner
MLA, Medicine Hat Constituency; Minister of Environment

Bill Cade was the right person at the right time to continue the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's progression to an elite comprehensive institution. During his term, the alumni base almost doubled in size. With his encouragement and support, it has become an increasingly important component of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community. Indeed, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, city, province and country will miss Bill and Elsa's involvement, enthusiasm and commitment.

Don Chandler (BA '73)
President, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Alumni Association

Given all that Bill was responsible for, I admired him for always putting the students first and for his infectious passion for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.

Karen Bartsch
U of L Board of Governors Member

Bill is a very sincere, welcoming man, who converses easily and comfortably with people from all walks of life.
When I mentioned that my daughter had started her first year at U of L , Bill encouraged me to have her give him a call and stop by for a visit sometime. For a few months she procrastinated, thinking he would be too busy and was not really serious. Finally, when she did make an appointment to visit Bill, she found that he was not only the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ president, but moreover he was a friend – a friend from a different walk of life, a friend from a different generation – but someone who made every effort to be a friend.

The world would be a better place if more people were like Bill Cade.

Happy trails, Bill.

Evan Berger
MLA, Livingstone-Macleod

Bill Cade is generous, gracious, kind and clear about his commitment to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and the people involved.

Susan Burrows-Johnson
CEO/Executive Director, Galt Museum and Archives

I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your retirement as president of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.
For a decade, you have served as an exceptional visionary, ambassador and innovator for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody">
Looking back, native-Texan Elsa Cade recalls that after living in cloudy Ontario for 23 years, the decision to relocate to Alberta felt like coming home.

"The idea of moving out west and enjoying the big sky, the sunshine and the down-to-earth nature of the way people are here really appealed to us," explains Elsa, wife to Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge President Dr. Bill Cade. "Yes, it was hard to leave, but settling in was made so much easier because of the way we were received by the community."

And while she admits that at the start there were occasional times when the couple felt like "deer caught in headlights," it didn't take long until both Bill and Elsa were a deeply knit part of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. In large part, that reality can be credited to Elsa's attitude.

"I always saw myself as a servant. It's a model I've held for years: if you want to see something done, you need to get involved and just do it," says Elsa. "I knew I was part of a presidential couple, and I felt that part of my role was to support Bill in accomplishing the mission of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬."

Now, 10 years later, it's hard to imagine any Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ function without the cheerful presence of Elsa. Not only has she graciously hosted many groups and individuals in her home, attended countless dinners, student receptions, lectures, celebrations and other events, but she has been to every convocation since arriving.

"I really do enjoy each one of the ceremonies – they're all so different. Besides, it's given me a chance to wear my hats," says Elsa with a laugh.

As for Bill, having Elsa by his side is something he doesn't take for granted.

"I could have done nothing without Elsa's help, assistance, friendship and love over the years. I just couldn't do it," says Bill.
"I'm not a real party person, and we've gone to many, many functions over the years and having Elsa along allows me to do that. I'm much more comfortable sitting at home with my wife and my dogs."

An accomplished teacher and educator in her own right, Elsa earned her Alberta certification when the couple first moved to Lethbridge. While the demands of her role did not allow for her to carry a full-time job, she has still managed to make a huge impact on the greater community.

Only a short time after arriving in Lethbridge, Elsa began a google-search to find out what was happening in science education in Alberta. She soon satisfied her "itch" to be involved in this area through active volunteer involvement with Science Alberta Foundation, as well as 5th on 5th Youth Services.

In recognition of Elsa's contributions, both on campus and off, Elsa received a Senate Volunteer Award at the Spring 2010 Convocation.

"I feel extremely good about that," says Bill. "It makes me feel very satisfied that the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ acknowledged her in that capacity."

As for the next chapter, in October Bill and Elsa will embark on a six-week research adventure throughout South Africa, with the first stop of Namibia, somewhere Bill has promised to take Elsa for years.

"We're going to shed our fancy duds and jump into our grubby gear and go back to our life as people in the field, eating SpaghettiOs out of a can on a four-wheel trek," says Elsa.

Not surprisingly, Elsa's life-theme of service remains forefront in her long-term plans, with intentions to move back to Texas and support her parents, now in their 80s. But even so, she's not setting any plans in stone.

"I look forward to spending more time with family and making trips to Africa and to settling into a new life, but I try not to have too many expectations," she says.
"I would never have thought Bill and I would end up out here, I just would have never thought. So it's nice to be open because who knows what the future holds?"

To view the entire issue of SAM in a flipbook format, follow this link.

Related Topics

Company:

native-Texan Elsa Cade

Organization:

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge

Science Alberta Foundation

Person:

Elsa

Bill Cade

Position:

accomplished teacher

President

ProvinceOrState:

Alberta

Texas

Ontario

Wed, 07 Jul 2010 17:18:50 +0000 trevor.kenney 4378 at /unews Alma Matters /unews/article/alma-matters-0

by Trevor Kenney

July 6, 2010

What's new with our alumni? Many more were received than could be added to that publication, so they are posted below.

+++++

The thing I appreciated most about Bill was that not only did he understand what his job was – and did it well, but he understood what his job wasn't – and he did that well too. He and Elsa will be missed....

Richard Davidson Q.C.
U of L Chancellor
_ _

Dr. Cade hadn't officially started his term as President. I had a wall of students in front of me, all filling out forms. As Dr. Cade walked by the Registrar's Office, he looked over in my direction, smiled and waved.

I immediately looked behind me, as I thought Leslie or Debi was standing behind me, and he was waving to them. I thought to myself.....he couldn't possibly be waving to me, but he was. That simple gesture made my day!

In past years the Registrar's Office had instituted a photo line-up at convocation. After students came off the dais and had their picture taken, a lot of them were a bit disoriented and would walk off in the wrong direction.

I was positioned at the front to guide them with Mrs. Cade unofficially assisting me in her front row seat by pointing them in the right direction.

Candace Dueck
_ _

The one thing I will always remember about Dr. Cade is his ability to warm up any room with his intellect, passion, energy and friendly Texas drawl. His charismatic qualities and initiatives have opened many doors of opportunity for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ will forever benefit from his vision and accomplishments.

The one thing that I will never understand is why Dr Cade would travel half way around the world to study Crickets? I wish Dr. and Elsa Cade the very best of health and happiness in the future.

C. Dean Setoguchi
Vice President & CFO
Keyera Facilities Income Fund

_ _

Bill is a remarkable man who I instantly had a liking for. An engaging individual, I was at ease when we met and always looked forward to speaking with him when I knew we would be at the same events.

A true leader, Bill had the respect of everyone in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and was recognized by his colleagues for his ability. Staff and the community of Lethbridge have all benefitted greatly from your leadership, ingenuity and success. You can take pride in everything you, and this instituion, have accomplished during your tenure.

Under your leadership, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's offerings have evolved to include the School of Graduate Studies and the first-time admission of PhD students.

_ _

Bill Cade is one of that rare breed who truly understand all of the roles they're expected to play in their position. He's equal parts academic, administrator, scientist and statesman.

And he can express his passion in each of those roles in a way that everyone can understand, appreciate and share. He can even make crickets sound exciting!

Bill is also the greatest cheerleader the university has ever seen (must be the Texan in him). Under his watch, the U of L has become a stronger community partner and a source of immense pride for all Southern Albertans.

It would be impossible to list all of Bill's accomplishments here. For me, his most enduring legacy will be the passion and joy that was always contagious whenever I spoke with him. I will miss working with him in our official capacities, but I'll always consider Bill a personal friend.

Greg Weadick

_ _

As Regional Minister for Southern Alberta I would like to take a moment to thank you for your years as President at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.

You have shown true leadership and dedication to your students and to the community both at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and across Alberta.

Under your leadership, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge has become one of Canada's finest institutions and I have been proud to work with you and your team to ensure the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ has the resources it needs to continue to be a success.

Congratulations on the past ten years with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and I wish you all the best on your retirement.

The Honourable Jim Prentice, PC, QC, MP
Minister of the Environment

_ _

Bill Cade is generous, gracious, kind and clear about his commitment to the university and the people involved.

Susan Burrows-Johnson
CEO/Executive Director
Galt Mueseum and Archives

_ _

Although I do not have a long history of knowing Bill and I do not have any specific story to share I do want to acknowledge that he was one of the main reasons I have reengaged with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge after 18 years.

When I first met Bill Cade in my office in Calgary it was shortly after becoming a donor of the Markin Hall project.

We were discussing the progress and development of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge and the current projects being undertaken.

As I listened to Bill speak I could feel his passion and excitement for what he was building.

He believed in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, he believed the people working at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, and he believed in the difference he was making for the students.

He asked me to become involved with the Advancement Committee and I decided immediately, knowing, that he is a man of action and really does make things happen.

He smiled when I asked him if committee work and my involvement would actually get results - he said - "We want individuals involved with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ that will make a difference".

So, what I am really saying is he is the reason an Alum like myself is involved with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. Bill's leadership will no doubt be a loss to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, however, his vision will be carried on by the next generation.

I wish Bill and Elsa all the best in the future and I look forward to his life updates in the future.

Patrick C. Forrest
Vice-President & Senior Investment Advisor
BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc.

_ _

I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your retirement as President of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.

For a decade, you have served as an exceptional visionary, ambassador, and innovator for the university. Through your guidance, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge has developed a reputation for teaching and research excellence, and it has become a key part of Campus Alberta.

Your participation on numerous committees, boards, and other organizations has been greatly appreciated and I look forward to working together in the near future.

Again, congratulations on such a successful career and best wishes in all your future endeavours.

Doug Horner
Deputy Premier
Minister of Advanced Education and Technology

_ _

Bill Cade was the right person at the right time to continue the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's progression to an elite comprehensive institution.

During his term, the Alumni Association has almost doubled in size; and, with his encouragement and support, has become an increasingly important component of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community. Indeed, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, City, Province and Country will miss Bill and Elsa's involvement, enthusiasm and commitment.

All the best to each of you in the future.

Don Chandler
President, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Alumni Association

_ _

As a member of the Board of Governors, I would like to thank Bill for his exemplary leadership and I wish him well in his future endeavors. Given all that Bill was responsible for, I admired him for always putting the students first and for his infectious passion for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ if Lethbridge.

Karen Bartsch
Board of Governors Public Member

_ _

I am not sure if I am too late with this but I would like to mention the first tour I went on after a senate meeting of the theater. I made a casual comment to Bill about recruitment for the university while on the tour. By Monday he had John Kincaid in contact with me to follow up on the comment! He doesn't miss a thing!

Also I am not sure you were there when he told the story of the streaker in the new stadium....after an enthusiastic monologue of the young man's escapade, without cracking a smile with his deep Texas accent, he said, "of course my official stance is I am shocked and appalled"". Most of us were nearly in tears laughing by this point.

I am sure you ave lots of things submitted but these are two things I remember that endear him to many.

Mari Dauny
Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Senate Member

_ _

I recall a story told by Bill in his earlier years at the U of L. He arrived at the Coutts border with a collection of insects The Immigration person asked Bill to explain why he was bringing insects into Canada from the USA.

Bill got pissed off and asked if it would be better if he just let all the insects escape. This irked the border patrol person who insisted that Bill would have to wait until an expert academic was called to the border from Calgary to vouch that the insects would not harm Canadians.

This caused Bill to have to wait more than three hours for another academic to vouch for the insects and for Bill, who was and is a first class entymologist.

Insult was added to injury when the entylologist from Calgary signed the form presented to her without even examining the insects.

Not the best WELCOME TO CANADA that Bill ever received. I found it as amusing as Bill latterly did.

Ian McKenna
Retired Faculty member

_ _

Our first meeting was on the diocese for convocation where we shared a rare first impression when he sincerely turned to me and chuckled at a joke.

Southern Albertans pride themselves on their ability to cope with our climate… Imagine my glee when President Cade went above the call of duty to pace his heavy breathing in preparation for a True North Polar Bear sip! This man can do it all.

The one word to describe Dr. Bill Cade is: REAL

Bridget A. Pastoor
MLA

_ _

The first time I met Dr. Cade I was impressed with his friendliness and engaging personality. He is personable and makes everyone feel listened to. I have so enjoyed meeting Bill at the Senate meetings and will definitely miss his leadership. I am also impressed with Elsa and her outgoing personality.

They make a wonderful team. P.S. Lethbridge Public Library featuring Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge alumnus Virgil Grandfield (BA '92).

Outsourcing Disaster: Human Trafficking and Humanitarian Failure in Aceh's Tsunami Reconstruction? is the title of the talk, beginning at
7 p.m. in the library's theatre gallery.

In 2006-2009, one of the most wretched places to be a construction worker in Indonesia was on a "humanitarian" reconstruction project in the tsunami-devastated province of Aceh.

Instead of receiving benefits from the largest, most generously-funded humanitarian operation in history, research indicates that tens of thousands of Javanese construction workers were falsely recruited for exploitative use and/or involuntary labour, under conditions defined as "human trafficking" or "modern slavery."

The social disaster throughout Aceh and Java was borne mostly by Javanese laborers, some of whom died in Aceh because of abuse and neglect.

Speaker Virgil Grandfield will contend that disproportionate numbers of trafficked victims were from larger projects managed by Red Cross, United Nations, development banks and NGO's.

In every community visited by investigative teams, witnesses have testified that many or most of 200,000 Javanese tsunami workers were unpaid, hungry and had to escape to find other work or ways to travel 2000km home.

Grandfield grew up in Texas and achieved degrees in political science at the U of L and journalism at Concordia Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in Montreal (1993).

In the mid 90s, he started the first Canadian educational consulting agency in Mexico and in 1999 after Hurricane Mitch in Central America, began a career in the humanitarian field of work.

Grandfield became a Canadian Red Cross delegate after working in the Blood Reserve flood response in 2002 and was deployed to Aceh, Indonesia in 2005 as part of the International Red Cross tsunami operation.

Returning to Aceh in 2007, Grandfield discovered human trafficking of workers in Canadian Red Cross operations and resigned as a delegate in 2008 to find these "modern slaves" and their families and help them seek justice from those relief agencies which used and abandoned them in Aceh.

Beverly Muendel-Atherstone will serve as moderator for this event.

<div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div
