Pronghorns women's rugby team kicks off season

For the first time since 2007, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby team enters the Canada West season as the hunter and not the hunted after seeing their reign of six consecutive conference championships snapped in 2012.

The ‘Horns will not have a home game until the Canada West Championships and will play all four of their conference games on the road, starting this weekend with a trip to the west coast to face the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds.

In addition to losing their conference crown, the ‘Horns also had their 22-game conference winning streak snapped in the process, losing to the Calgary Dinos 31-18 during the regular season. It was the Dinos who also put an end to the ‘Horns' reign as conference champions, beating the U of L 33-32 in a thrilling Canada West semifinal.

Heading into the 2013 season, the ‘Horns will need to fill some key holes left by the departure of five-time Canada West all-star Brandi Van Eeuwen, fly half Laura Murphy-Burke, scrum half Alex Hendricks and heart and soul leader Kendra Reeves. Despite these departures, the cupboard is far from bare with the return of 2013 Canada U20 members Sarah Gordon and Ashley Delaney. Add in team captain Jillian Ankutowicz, Kim Leavitt, Tiffany Wideen and Lindsey Duxbury, and the leadership group will be solid.

Newcomers Allison Toews and Lisa Hildebrand have also impressed early for the ‘Horns.

The ‘Horns' first opponent, the Victoria Vikes, will look to rebound from last season’s winless campaign and welcome a fresh, elite group of recruits to the fold. The Vikes boast 15 new members, 11 of whom competed provincially this past summer.

The UBC Thunderbirds enter the 2013 Canada West women’s rugby season with a new coach in Maria Gallo, who is working to replicate the success she enjoyed as a player at both Guelph ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta. The former national team member won three CIS championships and was named the CIS Most Valuable Player in 2002.

Gallo takes over a relatively young squad that returns most of its players from last season, which ended with a loss in the Canada West bronze medal game. There are no fifth-year seniors on the roster, but there is a large group of third- and fourth-year players who will provide leadership.

The Canada West Championships will be hosted by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Oct. 18-20 at the
U of L Community Sports Stadium.

Horns host weekend Canada West soccer games

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's and women's soccer teams will be looking for their first victories of the Canada West season this weekend as they each host a pair of matches at the
U of L Community Stadium.

Pronghorn Men

Coming off a disappointing opening weekend of the season, the men’s soccer team (0-2-0 CW) will look to rebound this weekend hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0-0).

Revenge will also be on the squad's mind this weekend; the ‘Horns and Huskies faced off on the final weekend of the season last year and were battling each other for a post-season spot. The Huskies dashed any hopes of the ‘Horns qualifying for the playoffs with a heartbreaking 2-1 victory on the second to last game of the season. In the final game of the season, the ‘Horns and Huskies battled to 1-1 draw.

The ‘Horns dropped both games of a home-and-home series with the Calgary Dinos last weekend, falling 3-2 Saturday in Calgary and 1-0 the next day at home. Defender Conner Brady and freshman Odilichukwu Ohuegbe were the ‘Horns goal scorers on Saturday.

The Huskies, who made their first appearance on the 2013 CIS top 10 list this week at #10, opened their season two weeks ago beating the Winnipeg Wesmen 2-1. Last weekend they traveled to Prince George for one game versus the UNBC Timberwolves and routed the Timberwolves 7-0.

Kick-off for both Saturday's and Sunday's games will follow the women’s contests at approximately 2:15 p.m. at the Community Sports Stadium.

Pronghorn Women

After starting the 2013 season on the road last weekend, the women’s soccer team (0-2-0 CW) returns home to host a pair of Manitoba schools.

Saturday afternoon, the ‘Horns will host the Winnipeg Wesmen (0-2-0 CW) before the Manitoba Bisons (0-2-0 CW) come calling on Sunday. Both games are set for 12 p.m. at the U of L Community Sports Stadium.

The ‘Horns opened the season with a tough 3-0 loss to the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton, followed by a close 1-0 defeat to the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary. The Cougars' lone goal came on a penalty kick in the opening half.

Both the Winnipeg Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons opened the season with a pair of losses on home field versus the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies respectively.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ becoming hub for elite athletes

With three Olympians and another athlete headed to the Paralympics, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will be extremely well represented in London. And rather than this occurrence being a blip on the radar, Horns Athletics track coach Larry Steinke (BA '94) says it is an emerging trend.

"We're a small community and I think in some ways that gives us a lot of positives in being able to support the athletes that are here," says Steinke, the Athletics Canada Throws coach who will also attend the London Olympics. "You don't get lost in the masses here as you would in some of the larger centres."

Jim Steacy and Heather Steacy will represent the U of L and Canada at the London Olympic Games.

The 1^st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, coupled with the Community Sports Stadium and a developing sports medicine clinic make the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ a very attractive destination for aspiring athletes.

"We're a very unique facility, especially for the throwing events, where you just don't have this capability in the rest of Canada. Every day I have to remind our athletes that this is not able to be done everywhere else," he says, referring to individual training sessions twice per day and access to both indoor and outdoor facilities. "It really is becoming a destination place."

Jim (BASc '09) and Heather Steacy did not have to go far to access the U of L, they are Lethbridge products, but they understand how lucky they are to have the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as their home base and Steinke as their coach.

"I can guarantee you I wouldn't be here if not for him," says Jim. "I would have tried to play basketball and been done university in five years and out in the work world by now. There is no way Heather and I would be here without him, he's hands down the best technical coach in North America for the throwing events."

His sister Heather echoes that sentiment, saying she was offered opportunities to train elsewhere but never wavered in her commitment to stay home.

"I never considered going to the United States for school because I wanted to stay with Larry and I couldn't have made a better choice," she says. "I have a lot of friends who took that route and trained with people who didn't have the knowledge base he has. I couldn't take that chance and I'm really grateful he's as patient as he is and willing to put in the hours he does, it's fantastic and I'm really excited he gets to come to London with us."

Steinke says that the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has attracted a number of graduate athletes from DePaul ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, another from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Washington and still more from the Canadian Olympic Development Team. Liz Gleadle, a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of British Columbia javelin thrower, took a year off from her studies to come to the U of L and train with Steinke.

"I needed to go somewhere with a more focused environment and a coach that could spend time with me full time," she says in advance of her first Olympic appearance. "I knew I wanted to make it to the Olympics and that I could make it happen here."

Horns rugby under the lights

For the first time in its history, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's rugby team will play under the lights Thursday night, hosting the 10th ranked Calgary Dinos at 7 p.m. at the Community Sports Stadium.

Thursday night also marks the 'HERD Fest' Pre-Game tailgate party beginning at 5:30 p.m. All HERD members will receive a voucher for a free slice of pizza and a beverage, and anyone and everyone is welcome to attend.
The 'Horns, ranked third in the country, enter their final game of the Canada West conference schedule with a perfect 3-0 record and have outscored opponents 138-7, including a 52-7 drubbing of the Alberta Pandas Oct. 2, the 'Horns only other home game of the season.
Freshman Cassandra Orr and Sarah Gordon have led the way for the 'Horns offensively thus far. Orr leads the conference in scoring with five tries in her first three CIS games, while Gordon is tied for second in conference scoring with fellow Pronghorn Laura Murphy-Burke with 24 points. Gordon has scored two tries, while kicking two penalty goals and four converts. Murphy-Burke leads the conference with 8 converts made.
Reigning Canada West player of the year, Kelsey Willoughby, has been a leader for the 'Horns at both ends of the field. She is tied for second in tries scored with four and her defensive presence has led to two shutout wins.
The Dinos have been the surprise team in the conference this season. In only their second season of Canada West action, the Dinos won their first game ever earlier this month in Vancouver, beating the UBC Thunderbirds, 34-10. Two days later, the Dinos earned a sweep of the BC schools with a 31-15 victory over the Victoria Vikes.

Latrace, Medoruma earn accolades

It hasn't been a great start for either the Pronghorns men's or women's soccer teams but there have been some solid individual performances thorugh the first two weeks of the Canada West season. On Tuesday, Horns Athletics announced its first set of Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.

Sherry Latrace – Women's Soccer

While the Pronghorn women's soccer team dropped its first four games, fourth-year defender Sherry Latrace has been a solid presence in the Horns backline.

After playing as a forward her first three seasons, Latrace has made a seamless transition to the Horns' defensive core that was overhauled over the off-season.

The Brooks, Alta. native did an exceptional job this past weekend turning away Calgary Dino attacks both in Calgary on Saturday and during the 'Horns' home opener on Sunday.

Matt Medoruma – Men's Soccer

Fourth-year midfielder Matt Medoruma has been a constant presence at both ends of the field for the 'Horns thus far this season.

This past weekend, Medoruma was in the middle of virtually all of the 'Horns' attacks versus the Calgary Dinos, with his pace and tenacity causing fits for the Dino defense all weekend.

Saturday, Medoruma registered one shot and set up the 'Horns' lone goal in a 2-1 loss. On Sunday he was credited with four shot attempts in the 'Horns' 1-0 loss.

Both teams are back in action this weekend with the Horns hosting ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Victoria on Saturday and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of the Freser Valley on Sunday at the Community Sports Stadium. The women play at noon and the men at 2 p.m. both days.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ takes provincial budget in stride

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge senior administration, already operating under the premise that no increases to base operating grants would be forthcoming, was not taken by surprise when the Alberta government released its 2011-2012 budget recently. Moreover, having taken measures to deal with forecasted budget shortfalls, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is moving ahead with its preparation of a balanced 2011-2012 U of L budget.

"The budget they handed down was essentially what we were expecting," says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ president Dr. Mike Mahon. "We're going to receive about the same amount of base funding as we received last year. While that still equates to a net loss as our operating costs rise, it is something we dealt with last year and what we have been preparing for this year."

The provincial budget committed $3 billion to Alberta Advanced Education and Technology, slightly less than the $3.2 billion it received in 2010-2011. Campus Alberta grants to the province's 26 post-secondary institutions increased by $61.6 million.

For the U of L, whose single largest revenue stream (66 per cent) is from government grants, the Campus Alberta grant amounts to $99,966,673.

"This is at the same base level as received in 2010-2011," says Mahon. "But this includes some additional support for basic infrastructure costs that we've borne over the past year, about $1.4 million for the operations of Markin Hall, the Community Sports Stadium and the Penny Building."

Mahon says the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will also receive a one-time transition grant of $1.2 million from Advanced Education and Technology that will be used to fund initiatives relating to the U of L's strategic priorities, as well as to cope with further anticipated operating budget reductions in future years.

"The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has adopted a very prudent approach to dealing with budget constraints, and we've seen departments throughout the institution continue to provide the very best service to our students while meeting these challenges," adds Mahon. "As we move forward with the 2011-2012 budget, I trust we will continue to give our students the quality educational experience they've grown to expect."

Pronghorn soccer teams at home

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's and women's soccer teams return to the Community Sports Stadium this weekend for a pair of Canada West contests on Saturday and Sunday.

After a disappointing road trip that saw ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta sweep both clubs respectively, the Horns look to get back on track on their home turf.

The women's team (0-4) looks to hit the win column for the first time, hosting the Regina Cougars and Manitoba Bisons Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The Cougars enter the weekend at 1-2-1 on the season while the Bisons are also winless at 0-2-2.

Kick-off for both games is at noon.

On the men's side, the Horns (1-3) face a pair of nationally ranked squads. On Saturday, Trinity Western Spartans (2-1) come to town. They are currently ranked seventh in the country. Things then get even tougher on Sunday when the second-ranked UBC Thunderbirds invade. Both games begin at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Horns women's rugby team begins defense of its Canada West and CIS championships this weekend by traveling to the west coast to face the Victoria Vikes and CIS 8^th-ranked UBC Thunderbirds.

The Horns, ranked first in the country, face a year of transition with the graduation of the most successful senior class in school history.

The Pronghorns women's hockey team plays a pre-season home-and-home series with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary Dinos this weekend. Saturday, the teams square off in Calgary before returning to Lethbridge for a 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon tilt at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Horns rugby bulks up for season

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's rugby team has a target on its back. As the defending three-time CIS champions enter the 2010 season, the entire country is taking aim at ending the club's reign.

With the graduation of the most successful class in Pronghorn women's rugby history, head coach Neil Langevin has had his work cut out for him as he tries to keep his squad on top.

Last year's senior group, which was lead by CIS player of the Year Ashley Patzer, won four consecutive Canada West titles and three consecutive CIS titles and wrapped their collegiate career with an undefeated season, outscoring their opponents 446-13.

Enter a quartet of newcomers that Langevin expects to make an immediate impact.

Juhee Thompson, Logan Kennedy, Tiffany Wideen and Larissa Brown were introduced as the newest Horns on Tuesday afternoon, effectively opening a new chapter for the national powerhouse.

Thompson, a Cardston, Alta. product, was the 2009 most valuable player in the Southern Alberta High School Rugby League. A flanker, she played for the Raymond Comets and was also a member of the Alberta U17 and Canadian U18 teams.

"Her incredible athletic co-ordination allows Juhee to be an exciting player," says Langevin. "Juhee has the potential to be one of the best players in the country in her time at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. We are excited that she is going to play here."

Thompson will also suit up for the women's basketball team after the rugby season has completed.

The CIS top-ranked Horns will begin defense of their Canada West title this weekend with road games against the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds respectively. The U of L hosts the Canada West Championships, Oct. 22-24 at the Community Sports Stadium.
