Canada 150 grant facilitates upgrades to Max Bell pool

The Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will get some much-needed improvements thanks to the federal government’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, the Canada 150 Fund and the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund.

Darshan Kang, member of Parliament for Calgary Skyview, announced the funding Wednesday at City Hall in Lethbridge on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada; and the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

Overall, 10 community projects in southern Alberta will receive more than $4.8 million through these programs, which are part of Canada 150 Celebrates. The funds are designed to help communities modernize local recreation facilities and improve social and cultural infrastructure and programs.

The grant is worth $180,000, matched by an equal amount the U of L will provide through its Strategic Priorities Fund for a total of $360,000.

“The Max Bell pool and the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport & Wellness serve both the U of L and the southern Alberta community,” says Nancy Walker, vice-president (finance and administration). “These facilities were built in partnership with the City of Lethbridge to meet the demand for recreation programming in our community. These upgrades will ensure elite competitions continue to be hosted here, as well as meet the needs of students, staff and casual community users.”

After more than 30 years of use, the Max Bell pool needs some upgrades. The Canada 150 grant will be used to provide additional lighting on the surface of the pool. The lighting, which will be direct LED lighting, will improve swimmer safety and spectator visibility. Through the installation of energy efficient lighting, the project will help to advance a clean growth economy by reducing energy consumption. The grant also enables the U of L to refurbish the concrete dive tower and repair the steam room in the women’s locker room. In addition, locker rooms in the adjacent Centre for Sport & Wellness will be reconfigured and the life safety systems, including the fire speaker system, will be upgraded.

Summer campus projects give new look

As another academic year gets underway, new and returning students, staff and faculty will see some significant changes to the U of L's physical campus.

The Department of Facilities and its Project Management Office have been working diligently to create and renovate a variety of new and improved spaces.

This past summer was one of the largest building seasons the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has ever seen – about $30 million worth – making our campus the busiest building site south of Calgary. While construction crews have been working around the clock and most projects are near completion, not all are finished.

The new quad area north of Markin Hall promises to give the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ another parkland setting, complete with rolling hills and well-lit walking paths.

The Facilities department appreciates everyone's patience as crews wrap up the remaining construction, and ask that all posted signs be obeyed to ensure everyone's safety.

The second and final phase of the mechanical upgrades to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Centre for the Arts should be done by early September. A typical break-in period of new equipment is expected to follow. The project will not only improve air quality but also create a more energy efficient building operation.

Several areas of the PE Building are also wrapping up construction, including the finishing touches on the south plaza entrance as well as the indoor PE staircase, both of which should be open by October.

The newly renovated day-use change rooms in the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre should also be operational by early October. The nearby underground Physical Education Tunnel re-opened just prior to the first day of classes.

The new sports medicine clinic in PE100, the area below the south end of the running track, is on schedule to open by the end of September. Once complete, the clinic will feature physiotherapy and exam rooms, treatment areas and doctor's offices.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Quad north of Markin Hall, featuring a core open space surrounded by small rolling hills, well-lit sidewalks and landscaping should be ready for use by October.

The final details of the parking lot redevelopment will also conclude later this month. The lots have been redesigned to offer more practical parking and improve pedestrian safety. Phase 2 of the parking lot project will get underway in spring 2013.

Perhaps the biggest project on campus, the ongoing construction of the 259-bed Aperture Park residence is on schedule and set to open July 2013.

Off campus, the downtown Penny Building will undergo renovations starting mid-September.

U of L sets its holiday hours

The Christmas break is upon us and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has released its scheduled operating hours for the various campus facilities.

While the majority of offices at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge close over the holiday break, the many fitness services located in the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre and the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness will be open after Dec. 25.

You may wish to check out their operating times in order to walk, swim or climb off the turkey and holiday snacks.

The Library will close at noon, Dec. 24. Normal hours resume at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4.

There will also be minimal public access to most buildings on campus from Friday, Dec. 25 to until 5 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4.

- ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Library, main entrance by the Aperture Drive Bus Loop

- 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness (north and south entrances)

The following entrances are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

- ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall, Level 4 entrance

- ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Centre for the Arts, Level 4 entrance

The following buildings are closed to the public until 5 a.m. on Jan. 4:

- Students' Union Building

- Turcotte Hall (east section)

- Anderson Hall

- Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience

- Alberta Water and Environimental Science Building

Swim team gears up for Classic

Four members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns swim team have qualified for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport swimming championships as the team heads into this weekend's Pronghorn Classic.

The Pronghorns, competing in arguably the toughest conference in the country, fared well at the Canada West swim championships this past weekend. The small squad beat a total of 56 personal-best marks and the team placed sixth overall as they battled programs stocked with Olympic talent.

Leading the way on the men's side was Jeffrey Nicol. Nicol, gearing up for the CIS championships, scored points in the 400-metre Individual Medley, 200m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and relay events. He was also the team's top finisher, placing sixth in the 200m breaststroke. Teammate Dwight Holmen authored a major personal breakthrough, qualifying for the CIS championship in each of the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

Heather Dutton led the women's team, as she scored 24 individual points and was on each of the scoring relay teams. Dutton had top-16 swims in each event she swam and capped off her weekend with a win in the 400m freestyle consolation final on Sunday night. CIS breaststroker Kristy Gabruck also had breakthrough performances in the 50m and 100m events.

The Pronghorn Classic goes this weekend at the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre where the rest of the squad has two final opportunities to record CIS-qualifying times. The meet begins Friday and runs through Sunday afternoon.
