The U of L team of Dustin Smith, Graeme Glaister, Jenna Friedt, Suneet Kharey, Harland Brandon and Zak Stinson will now move on to the international competition, which will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, Mass. Nov. 1-4.</p><p>&ldquo;This certainly shows that bioengineering research and the aggressive approach we&rsquo;ve taken to study this field is working at the U of L, and that the RNA Institute is playing a key role in both enabling research and training students,&rdquo; says Dr. H.J. Wieden, director of the Alberta RNA (Ribonucleic acid) Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) at the U of L, the Innovates Centre of Research Excellence (iCORE) Chair of Bioengineering and faculty advisor for the U of L&rsquo;s iGEM teams. &ldquo; The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ is poised to continue to be at the forefront of this emerging field.&rdquo;</p><p>The U of L team&rsquo;s project includes developing a bioengineering part that compresses genetic information &ndash; essentially working like a zip drive. Every gene needs DNA, but there is only so much DNA that will fit in a cell. This novel part may allow future bioengineers more flexibility in their work.</p><p>Additionally, the U of L team developed software that quickly determines what DNA is compatible to compress together.</p><p>&ldquo;Each year we are also tasked with exploring the social implications of our project. Our team sought to ensure that our part could not be misused to hide dangerous genes,&rdquo; says team member Harland Brandon (BSc&rsquo;13), a first-year master&rsquo;s student and Winston Churchill High School graduate. &ldquo; We hypothesized that our part could be used to hide dangerous sequences, such as Ricin or Ebola, from gene synthesis companies. We then took it a step further and actually consulted with gene synthesis companies, U of L Risk and Safety Services and even a representative from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Not only do we see our project benefitting the field, but we found through our critical analysis that the potential for misuse is not possible.&rdquo;</p><p>In addition to winning the overall Regional Overgrad award, the U of L also claimed the award for best <a href="http://2013.igem.org/Team:Lethbridge" rel="nofollow">Wiki</a> (website explaining their project).</p><p>iGEM is the premier competition for young scientists interested in the emerging field of synthetic biology, which is quickly leading to new discoveries that will diversify key economic sectors such as pharmaceutical, agriculture, medical diagnostics, clean energy and resource extraction. It also facilitates scientific research and education by establishing and operating the Registry of Standard Biological Parts, a community collection of open source biological components.</p><p>The organization promotes the advancement of science and education by developing an international open community of students and practitioners in schools, laboratories, research institutes and industry.</p><p>Earlier this year, a team of Lethbridge high school students was awarded the coveted Green Brick grand prize at iGEM&rsquo;s High School Jamboree.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/toronto" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Toronto</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/city/boston" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Boston</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/massachusetts-institute-technology" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/rna-institute" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">RNA Institute</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/training-institute" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Training Institute</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-toronto" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/developed-software" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">developed software</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/industry-term/clean-energy" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">clean energy</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/federal-bureau-investigations" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Federal Bureau of Investigations</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/rna-institute" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">RNA Institute</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/massachusetts-institute-technology" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/winston-churchill-high-school" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Winston Churchill High School</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/innovates-centre-research-excellence" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Innovates Centre of Research Excellence</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-toronto" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/research-and-training-institute" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Research and Training Institute</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/zak-stinson" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Zak Stinson</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/hj-wieden" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">H.J. Oxytocin, unfortunately, has a very short half-life meaning the hormone degrades quickly and soon becomes unstable, making it expensive and difficult to store.<br /><br /> The Lethbridge High School team together with their Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge undergraduate student and graduate student advisors and their faculty advisor, Dr. HJ Wieden, successfully developed a genetic circuit (BioBricks) to reprogram a harmless laboratory strain of the common bacterium Escherichia coli to express a stabilized variant of Oxytocin. Details about their project and the team itself can be found on their project website (wiki) <a href="http://2013hs.igem.org/Team:Lethbridge_Canada" rel="nofollow">http://2013hs.igem.org/Team:Lethbridge_Canada</a><br /><br /> In addition to being named the top team at the competition, the Lethbridge team also was awarded prizes for the &quot;Best Bio Brick&quot; and &quot;Best Wiki&quot;. A total of 30 international teams competed at the event last weekend.<br /><br /> The iGEM Foundation fosters scientific research and education through organizing and operating the iGEM Competition, the premier student synthetic biology competition. It also facilitates scientific research and education by establishing and operating the Registry of Standard Biological Parts, a community collection of open source biological components.<br /><br /> The organization promotes the advancement of science and education by developing an international open community of students and practitioners in schools, laboratories, research institutes and industry.<br /><br /> &quot; One of the real values of the U of L&#39;s commitment to the iGEM program is that it is building bridges between high school and university experiences,&quot; say Dr. HJ Wieden, a U of L synthetic biology researcher who served as an advisor to the team. &quot; These exceptional students will be the innovators and entrepreneurs who will add tremendous value to Alberta&#39;s economy and quality of life in the future.&quot;<br /><br /> Students from the Lethbridge team represented various Lethbridge high schools including Chinook High School, Winston Churchill High School, Catholic Central High School and Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. The team has successfully applied for funding from Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (geekStarter) to support their project.<br /><br /> &quot; This result is absolutely exceptional, though I am not surprised. contemporary Canadian art to ever take place in the United States. Among the 62 artists included are three graduates of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's Faculty of Fine Arts.</p><p>Artists David Hoffos (BFA '94), Mary-Anne McTrowe (BFA '98) and Daniel Wong (BFA '03) travelled to North Adams, Mass. at the end of May for the opening of the exhibition. </p><p>The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) is known globally for showing the very best art of our time. Occupying a vast network of 19th century factory buildings, MASS MoCA's galleries boast more than 100,000 square feet of exhibition space. With a strong focus on new art, the museum has become a destination for those seeking unique, fresh and challenging encounters with contemporary art.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/oh-canada.jpg" alt="David Hoffos" title="David Hoffos will show works from his Scenes from the House Dream at Oh Canada this fall."><div class="image-caption">David Hoffos will show works from his Scenes from the House Dream at Oh Canada this fall.</div></div></p><p>"We think it is an honour to be included in this exhibition, considering Denise Markonish (the curator of Oh, Canada) did more than 400 studio visits in determining the lineup," says Wong.</p><p>Known together as the 'art-ernative' folk-rock band The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA Les Phonoréalistes, McTrowe and Wong have worked collaboratively since 2006. They are among the artists who created new works specifically for the exhibition. In addition to performing at the opening of Oh, Canada, the duo released a new album of songs relating to the museum.</p><p>"The album features four songs about and related to MASS MoCA: 'Oh Canada, Oh Canada' is our interpretation of what a theme song for the Oh, Canada exhibition might be; 'MASS MoCA' is about the history of the site that MASS MoCA inhabits; and 'Gravity is a Force to be Reckoned With' and 'Truisms' are about Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle and Jenny Holzer, respectively – two artists who have had exhibitions at MASS MoCA. The album cover itself is a riff on Bachman-Turner Overdrive," explains McTrowe.</p><p>Though it may come as a surprise to some, Lethbridge is a hotbed for contemporary art production in Canada.</p><p>"For as long as I've lived here, Lethbridge has had strong contemporary artists – people who contend on the national and international stage, so I'm not surprised Lethbridge artists are included in Oh, Canada. In fact, I'm honoured to have been chosen, especially considering there are so many great artists here," says Hoffos.</p><p>Hoffos has received widespread national acclaim for his large-scale, multimedia installations. From 2008 to 2011 his exhibition, Scenes from the House Dream, toured Canada debuting at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) and showing at major institutions across the country, including the National Gallery of Canada. For Oh, Canada, Hoffos presents works from Scenes from the House Dream; a snapshot of his practice representative of his larger body of work.</p><p>"Oh, Canada is a celebration for the whole country. It's the first time an exhibition like this has happened south of the border and it's never happened in Canada either, so it's a special moment not just for the artists in the exhibition, but also for contemporary art in Canada," he says. "My hope is that this exhibition demonstrates that cutting-edge contemporary art production can happen anywhere, including Lethbridge."</p><p>Oh, Canada opened May 27 at MASS MoCA and is on view until Apr. 1, 2013. world.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/jennifer-mather.jpg" alt="Dr. Jennifer Mather" title="Dr. Jennifer Mather is a world-renowned authority on octopuses."><div class="image-caption">Dr. Jennifer Mather is a world-renowned authority on octopuses.</div></div><br> <br> It's these achievements – and many others – that led to Mather's most recent accolade: The Ingrid Speaker Medal for Distinguished Research, Scholarship or Performance.<br> <br> For almost three decades, the <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas/psy" rel="nofollow">psychology</a> professor and one-time <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/caetl/" rel="nofollow">CAETL</a> Teaching Fellow, has taught thousands of undergraduates at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge everything from child development to the psychology of aging, while maintaining a rigorous research program defined by international collaboration and jet-setting to tropical locales. And, at 67, Mather's still as busy as ever.<br> <br> "I'm probably trying to model what I teach, which is that we have a full lifespan, thank you, and we should use it," she says.<br> <br> As one of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s most accomplished and longest serving faculty members, Mather is an intuitive choice for the prestigious Ingrid Speaker Medal. But the idea of an international expert on squids and octopuses residing at a land-locked university in southern Alberta's dusty prairies is unintuitive, to say the least.<br> <br> Mather's fascination with cephalopods – a category of boneless marine creatures which includes octupuses, squids and cuttle fish – began long before she set foot in Lethbridge. Growing up in Victoria, B.C., she spent a lot of time at the ocean shore, investigating the critters that dwelled in the water and sand.<br> <br> As a child, she was certain she'd study marine life in some capacity, but wasn't sure how. Finally, in the last year of an undergraduate biology degree at the <a href="http://www.ubc.ca/" rel="nofollow">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of British Columbia</a>, Mather took an animal behaviour class that clarified her path.<br> <br> "Bingo. I said, 'Okay. This is what I want to do.' "<br> <br> After completing a biology master's degree in octopus behaviour at <a href="http://www.fsu.edu/" rel="nofollow">Florida State Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬</a>, she went on to begin a PhD in psychology at <a href="http://www.brandeis.edu/" rel="nofollow">Brandeis Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in Massachusetts</a>. Upon completion of post-doctoral research at Brandeis in 1978, Mather and her husband looked to return to Canada with their two children. In 1980 she took up a prestigious Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Research Fellowship at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of western Ontario, then spotted a tenure-track position at the U of L five years later and took the leap.<br> <br> Lethbridge is nowhere near the natural habitats of cephalopods, but it's never been an impediment to Mather. She conducts field work related to squid displays (for instance, how they use their skin colour or tentacle movement to communicate) at the Caribbean island of Bonaire. At the <a href="http://www.seattleaquarium.org/" rel="nofollow">Seattle Aquarium</a>, she collaborates with Roland Anderson to study octopus cognition.<br> <br> While many of us know octopuses mainly as odd, unique sea creatures, they're a far more intelligent and creative species than given credit. Researchers first realized the octopus's ability to solve problems in the 1960s, but the matter wasn't explored in breadth until the last couple of decades. In the course of her career, Mather has helped prove that octopuses have different personalities, can solve problems (like opening jars to eat food inside) and play.<br> <br> While Mather is best known for her work on cephalopods, her research is broader: she's also explored how motor control problems can indicate brain dysfunction (like schizophrenia), care issues related to Alzheimer's disease, and successful university teaching. She's also recently co-authored a book about octopuses for the general public, entitled Octopus: The Ocean's Intelligent Invertebrate.<br> <br> "I have my fingers in a lot of pies," she admits. "I think it came about by accident, but I'm glad it did. I didn't want to be the kind of researcher to sit in a lab and do nothing else. I also think, as a scientist, I have an obligation to help people understand these animals."<br> <br> <strong><em>This story first appeared in the Legend.
