Work2Learn creating opportunities for students through valuable on-campus roles

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is investing in its students through paid work-integrated learning positions in Student Affairs — and if the experiences of the first cohort of student employees is any indication, Work2Learn (W2L) is a huge success.

Established in Fall 2021, W2L provides work-integrated learning positions in Student Affairs for full-time, domestic undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. The positions pay a competitive hourly rate for five to 10 hours of work per week. The first cohort of students worked from September through March with roles in Counselling Services, the Registrar’s Office, Student Enrolment and the Information Centre.

The skills the students acquire in their various W2L roles will serve them well into the future.

“This program is an investment in the future of our students and creates opportunities for them to build their professional lives and careers,” says Carrie Takeyasu, associate vice-president (finance). “And since it is targeted at students with demonstrated financial need, it meets two important objectives: providing quality work experience while reducing financial pressures.”

Over the past three years, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has invested $550,000 in its W2L programming to ensure accessibility for its students.

Janey Deacon-Rosamond is in her fifth year at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and her first in the Faculty of Education. She was successful in earning a position in Counselling Services, and specifically in Sexual Violence Prevention Services where she was an ambassador creating outreach campaigns, planning events and giving presentations. She says the program was just what she needed.

“I was working my dream job,” she says. “I want to work in education and outreach, and this was an amazing learning opportunity and steppingstone. I feel like this job experience really built up my professional toolbox.”

Being able to work on campus and earn more than minimum wage provided Deacon-Rosamond the flexibility she needed to maintain her demanding school schedule.

“I was able to finally afford fresh produce, it was awesome,” she exclaims. “The work hours being so flexible were amazing, especially since I was in my first year of education. I didn’t have the time to work any other part-time jobs because of the course load and my class schedule.”

The skills the students acquired in their various roles will serve them well into the future and open doors when they are ready to enter the workforce. They were also able to add the worked hours to their MyExperience Transcript.

“I benefited from this experience because I got to expand my skill set,” says Erika Vossebelt, a first-year psychology major who had a position in Career Bridge. “I have customer service experience but in a completely different industry. I feel that this really enriched my skills, grew my confidence, and helped me be more introspective about what I enjoy and do not enjoy in a job, and why. It really gave me clarity about myself and the types of jobs I am likely to prefer.”

Work-2-Learn is now taking applications for the next cohort of students who will begin work in May, with further roles to be posted in the summer for September start dates. Available positions include working in Counselling Services, Student Enrolment and Registrar’s Office, Career Bridge, The Agility Zone, and the Accommodated Learning Centre. Students can apply through the MyExperience website (search Work2Learn).

“We were really pleased with the feedback we received from students who participated in W2L this past year,” says Mark Slomp, executive director of Student Services. “Everyone who participated commented enthusiastically about the value of the program to their personal, academic, and professional lives. We are excited to build on this success in the year ahead.”

New department appointments announced

The Finance, Facilities and Public Affairs departments at the U of L recently announced three new appointments.

ASSOCIATE VICE-PRESIDENT (FINANCE)

Carrie Takeyasu

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors recently approved the appointment of Carrie Takeyasu (Certified Management Accountant, MBA) as the new Associate Vice-President (Finance), effective July 1, 2014.

Carrie has served in a variety of roles over her 25-year career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, each increasing in responsibility. She originally joined the U of L in 1998 as a clerk typist and her most recent appointment was as Executive Director, Financial Services, a position she has held since December 2007.

The Associate Vice-President (Finance) reports to Vice-President (Finance & Administration), Nancy Walker, and is a member of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's senior administrative team. Generally, the position is accountable for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's operating and capital budgets, including financial planning for ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ priorities as determined by senior administration and the Board of Governors. The AVP Finance is also responsible for providing comprehensive, accurate and timely financial management for all facets of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's operations. The units that report directly to the AVP Finance include Financial Services and Financial Planning.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, FACILITIES

TJ Hanson

TJ Hanson assumed the role of Executive Director, Facilities on July 1, 2014 after serving as the Acting Executive Director, Facilities since November 2013.

TJ has a B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan and is a Practicing Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta. Hanson has been at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge since 2007, beginning as the Director, Infrastructure and Engineering. Previously, he served as the Manager, Projects at Canbra Foods, Ltd.

The positon of Executive Director, Facilities reports to the Vice-President (Finance & Administration), Nancy Walker, and is a member of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's senior administrative team. The position is accountable for ensuring that all physical plant facilities and grounds of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ are developed, operated and maintained in an effective manner consistent with the needs of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Hanson is responsible for providing leadership to the Department of Facilities, with responsibility for Campus Safety, Campus Planning and Architecture, Project Management Office, Facility Operations and Maintenance and Facilities Administration.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS ADVISOR

Caroline Zentner

Caroline Zentner has joined the Public Affairs team in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Advancement as a Public Affairs Advisor, effective July 1, 2014. Zentner comes to the U of L after spending the last 14 years as a reporter at the Lethbridge Herald. A graduate of Lethbridge College’s Communication Arts Program, Zentner also has a bachelor of psychology from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan. She is very familiar with the U of L, having spent the past several years as the Herald’s education reporter and will be responsible for telling the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s story through the exploits of its faculty, staff and students.

Spoulos keeps finding his way back to the U of L

If it wasn't inevitable that Doug Spoulos (BMgt '87) would eventually return to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, at the very least it wasn't surprising.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's associate vice-president (finance) has a deeply rooted history with the U of L, so it seemed only right that circumstance aligned to bring him into the fold once again in spring 2011. He graduated from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in 1987, previously worked for the U of L, met his wife on campus and has a stepson who chose to come to the U of L from their home in Calgary.

So when it was time to get away from the busy Calgary lifestyle and apply the experience he'd gained in private sector positions, the U of L was there once again.

"We were looking to Lethbridge and this was the perfect job," says Spoulos. "It was a good experience for us in Calgary. I had the chance to work in a couple different industries and when I left I was the vice-president of finance, so I was getting the experience I wanted. But our kids were at an age where we wanted something a little slower and a little more relaxed – this opportunity was too good to pass up."

Doug Spoulos is instrumental in bringing people to the table to discuss priorities in the new budget process.

A chartered accountant by trade, Spoulos had worked the last several years acquiring the broad business experience he'd need for his new role at the
U of L.

"In my last position, I had the chance to work beyond the accounting side of things and look at the business aspect as well, how businesses run and how they operate. That's the more interesting part, because you can sit there and just work on the numbers or you can take those numbers and figure out how to apply them and determine what the business should be doing."

His first order of business at the U of L was to play a key role on the President's Task Force on Budget Process, the mandate of which was to review the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's budget process and make recommendations to the executive team supporting both short and long term planning.

Consisting of President Mike Mahon, executive director representatives Carrie Takeyasu and Chris Eagan, dean representatives Chris Hosgood and Rob Wood, Spoulos and the group sought input from throughout the U of L community on the budget process.

"The number one thing that came out of those meetings was a consensus that people wanted to tie budget priorities to the Strategic Plan," says Spoulos. "They wanted to see a rationale as to why money was going where it was going."

Another emergent theme came from the existing budget committee, its members expressing that the three-year sitting term was not long enough to gain a full understanding of the process to make their contributions effective.

"The basic conclusion we came to was that we already have a group of people who have a good understanding of the budget process," says Spoulos. "Those on the committee should be the people who are responsible for the budgets in their units, the deans and executive directors."

In not wanting to exclude the rest of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community from the process, the task force recommended that business units and faculty members have input through priority presentations, within their units and faculty councils, that speak to their specific areas.

"It's a build-from-the-ground-up approach when it comes to setting priorities," says Spoulos. "Priority presentations are not about dollars, they're about what priorities you've established in your area. We look at them, the themes, and prioritize them in relation to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Strategic Plan and decide whether they should be funded. These presentations are open to the entire ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community. It gives everybody the opportunity to see what is being funded and why. You might not agree with every decision but at least the process is transparent and you can see the rationale behind the decision."

A third key theme of discovery centred on the timing of the budget process. Having always worked on a September to March cycle, Faculties indicated that to hire the most desirable candidates, they needed to start looking for people in November and December, far before they had any idea of what budget dollars were available to them. The cycle has now been adjusted to work from April to October.

"This first year will be a pretty difficult transition year because by the time this recommendation was made, we'd already put ourselves a month behind in the new system," says Spoulos.

As a result, the priority presentation process has been pushed back from June 25 to September.

"At the end of the day, our goal is to make the entire budget process transparent and accessible, so that everybody understands what goes into the creation of the budget," says Spoulos. "We want to make it equitable, so that not only do people have input into the process, but the right people have input."

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 6, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballrooms.
