Industrial Accident on Campus

On the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 14, a worker was fatally injured in an accident that occurred at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge residence construction site. The deceased is not an employee of the U of L, however, many in our campus community may have been affected by this accident or have personal and professional connections with the individual, his family, friends or co-workers.

Employees are reminded that confidential, professional, grief or trauma counselling is available from our Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP) provider, Homewood Human Solutions. Services are provided by phone, online or local face-to-face meetings. NOVEMBER 14, 2012

Earlier this afternoon, a worker was fatally injured in an accident that occurred at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge residence construction site. The deceased is not a U of L employee. At this time no further details are known.

U of L officials are working with emergency responders, construction contractors and are co-operating with relevant agencies. The U of L has made available its facilities for responders to this incident.

The U of L offers its sincere condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of the deceased.

Lethbridge Regional Police Service statement:

At approximately 1:13 p.m. police responded to a report that a piece of equipment had tipped over onto a male construction worker. The 31-year-old man died of his injuries.

Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is also investigating.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has been informed of the incident and are fully cooperating with the investigation.

At this time no further information will be released.

Sculpture speaks to artistic culture on campus

An idea that started over a beer and was roughly drafted on a napkin has evolved into the latest addition to the City of Lethbridge Public Art Collection.

Aeolian Aviary, a collaborative installation by U of L alumni and art professor Denton Fredrickson and Art Studio facility manager Catherine Ross, was recently unveiled in its permanent location on the east side of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG).

Fredrickson and Ross were awarded the public art commission following a competition that attracted 40 submissions from across Canada and beyond. The selection committee consisted of representatives from Allied Arts Council, SAAG, a community member, an artist and a technical expert.

"It is exactly these kinds of awards and achievements that reflect so well on the creative and research work of the members of the Faculty of Fine Arts," says Desmond Rochfort, Faculty of Fine Arts dean. "It also helps to highlight the excellence of our creative activities and research endeavours, and underscores why the U of L Faculty Fine Arts is increasingly the place of choice in Alberta for those wishing to study fine arts.

Aeolian Aviary combines the acoustic resonance of 16 wind and light-sensitive string instruments with the dynamic emergence of 67 bronze birds.

Student Services Fair a first for campus

By November, most students have settled into campus life, finished their midterms, and some may even be already counting down the days until Christmas. However, despite the fact that classes have been in session for two months, many students still do not know the full extent of the services and groups available to them.

For this reason, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is excited to announce the first-ever On-Campus Student Services Fair, taking place Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall Atrium.

"The goal of the fair is to raise awareness regarding all the services that are here for students to support them as they make their way through the process of earning their degree," says Eric Hawthorne, co-ordinator of Student Life Programs for Recruitment and Student Life. "The On-Campus Student Services Fair aims to assist students in being successful."

So, what exactly will be available at the fair?

Students will be able to learn about Academic Advising and how to plan out their academic path; Counselling Services will be present to answer questions about stress-management, study skills and the many workshops offered by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ; and several other important groups and departments that provide support to students will be represented.

The event is intended for all U of L students, not just those in their first year.

"This will be new for returning students as well," says Hawthorne. "We want returning students to know that we care just as much about how they are doing. Just because a student has been at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge for a year or two does not mean that they know the answer to everything.

"We hope that all students will come out and ask the questions that they have been looking to have answered, regardless of their year of study."

The On-Campus Student Services Fair runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Weekend Pronghorn action on campus

Pronghorns men's hockey, as well as the men's and women's basketball teams, all have home dates this weekend as Canada West action comes to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus.

Men's Hockey

The Horns (3-6-1 CW, 7-11-1 overall) host the defending Canada West champion and CIS second ranked Alberta Golden Bears (8-1-1CW, 11-2-1 overall) Friday and Saturday nights at Nicholas Sheran Arena (7 p.m. puck drop).

The Horns look to put an end to a four-game losing streak, while the Bears have won three straight after sweeping UBC in Vancouver last weekend.

After only dressing 14 players in Saskatoon over the Halloween weekend, the Horns are slowly getting healthy and should have all but two players back from injury. All three of the Horns wins this season have come at home, while the Bears have yet to lose in regulation time on the road. Their only road blemish is a 3-2 shootout loss in Calgary.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team (0-4 CW, 6-6 overall) hopes to end some early woes and pick up its first victory of the regular season after being swept last weekend by the Regina Cougars. The Horns held leads both nights last weekend in the fourth quarter but were unable hold on versus the fourth ranked Regina Cougars.

This weekend's opponents, Fraser Valley Cascades (0-2 CW) and Thompson Rivers WolfPack (2-0 CW) are coming off bye weeks, with the WolfPack sweeping the Cascades during the conference-opening weekend.

Friday night the Horns face the WolfPack, followed by the Cascades Saturday. Tip-off for both Friday and Saturday nights is 6 p.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team (1-3 CW, 3-6 overall) looks to gain some momentum after a convincing 16-point victory over the Regina Cougars in their series finale last Saturday. Despite struggling offensively, hitting on less than 30 per cent of their shots, the Horns played tough defence, only surrendering 54 points and found a way to win.

Thompson Rivers (0-2 CW) and Fraser Valley (2-0 CW) are coming off their bye weeks. During the opening weekend of conference action, the Cascades swept Thompson Rivers in Kamloops.

Former Pronghorns' guard Barnaby Craddock coaches the Horns' Saturday night opponent, Fraser Valley.

Tip-off is scheduled to follow the women's game both nights at approximately 8 p.m.

Horns Swimming

The swim team hosts Memorial ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ from St John's, Newfoundland for a dual meet Saturday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Max Bell Aquatic Centre.

Women's Hockey

The women's hockey team (3-3 CW, 6-6 overall) will finally return to the ice after being off for the past two weeks.

The Horns face a tough task as they travel to Edmonton to face the perennial women's hockey power Alberta Pandas (10-0 CW).

The Pandas have only surrendered 9 goals in 10 conference games and are coming off a home sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend.

Puck drops both nights at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton at 7 p.m.

MythBusters coming to campus

The MythBusters are coming to campus.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is pleased to partner with Science Alberta Foundation and program supporter Suncor Energy Foundation to host the MythBusters at the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010.

MythBusters Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci are coming to Alberta as part of the Science Alberta Foundation's "Science Happens Here" program.

"One of our founding goals has been to encourage young Albertans to enter careers in science and technology, by fostering an interest in these areas," says Dr. Arlene Ponting, CEO, Science Alberta Foundation.

"We are pleased to work with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in delivering this unique event, as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ showcases some of the most innovative science in the province."

Imahara is a former animatronics engineer and model maker for George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic. In addition to operating R2-D2 (one of only a handful of official operators), Grant has another claim to beloved-character fame: developing a custom circuit to cycle the Energizer Bunny's arm beats and ears at a constant rate.

Belleci worked for ILM for eight years as a model builder, sculptor and painter. Some of his movie credits include Starship Troopers, Galaxy Quest, T3, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and Van Helsing. He began work on Discovery Channel's MythBusters in 2003, doing work behind the scenes and in the second season was featured as a member of the team.
