Lasting Images - Kenojuak Ashevak

Kenojuak Ashevak was born in Ikirasaq, Baffin Island in 1927. Her father was a shaman, who clashed with other members of the community who had recently converted to Christianity, and he was killed when Ashevak was six years old. After his death, her family moved to live with Ashevak's maternal grandmother, who taught her traditional craft techniques including sealskin repair and caribou hide preparation.

In 1946, Ashevak married and began to have children, but was separated from her family from 1952 to 1955 by a stay in Quebec City's Parc Savard hospital, where she convalesced from tuberculosis. Upon her recovery, Ashevak began working with Inuit art promoter James Archibald Houston, and in 1959 she and a group of other Cape Dorset artists formed the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative workshop. Throughout her artistic career, Ashevak produced thousands of drawings, etchings, stone cut prints and soapstone sculptures, often featuring brightly coloured, stylized representations of animals and mythical beings.

She was the subject of a National Film Board documentary in 1963, made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1967, awarded honorary doctorates from Queen's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto, and her work is held in numerous private and public collections across Canada and internationally.

Ashevak died on January 8, 2013 in Cape Dorset.

NFB Film Club at library

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Library continues to reach out to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community by introducing new and innovative ways to bring people into the library.

The latest initiative has the library partnering with the National Film Board to present the NFB Film Club.

The Film Club presents a series of recent NFB documentaries in the library. The series began with the award-winning Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie, which was presented to a small but enthusiastic crowd on Oct. 12.

Students were treated to a variety of free snacks, and a thought-provoking documentary that provoked an excellent discussion.

The series continues with Act of Dishonour, by writer/director Nelofir Pazira. Set in the northern region of Afghanistan, this feature drama tells the story of a young bride-to-be who strays from local customs after befriending an Afghan-Canadian translator. Part lament against injustice, part testament to the spirit of a people who have survived decades of war, this film is a compelling drama in which east and west, love and honour, modernity and customs clash with tragic consequences. It will be shown on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in L1168.

The third film in this year's series will be John Walker's latest documentary, A Drummer's Dream, which features a rare assembly of some of the greatest drummers in the world. Explosive talent, passion, humour and irresistible personality come together in a magical setting when seven diverse drummers create a profound and unforgettable experience. The creative and spiritual freedom of expression these artists display is overwhelming. Rock, jazz, Latin fusion, soul – these master drummers have backed up the likes of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Carlos Santana.

An uplifting documentary for a little pre-finals relaxation, it will be shown on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. in L1168.

Coca Cola Case film tonight

The Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) presents a screening of The Coca Cola Case, Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in PE261

The film is a documentary about Coke and labour rights issues in the bottling plants.

Directed by German Gutierrez and Carmen Garcia, the 82-minute film is screening throughout the Cinema Politica Network between winter and spring 2010 as part of the The Coca Cola Case Film Tour, co-organized by the National Film Board. The screening is free and open to everyone.

SYNOPSIS: Colombia is the trade union murder capital of the world. Since 2002, more than 470 workers' leaders have been brutally killed, usually by paramilitaries hired by private companies intent on crushing the unions. Among these unscrupulous corporate brands is the poster boy for American business: Coca-Cola.

Talk to Martin Gil: His brother Isidro was killed at point-blank range while working at the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Carepa, because he was part of a union bargaining unit. Like most violent crimes committed against Colombian union leaders, Gil's murder went unpunished.

However, U.S. lawyers Daniel Kovalik and Terry Collingsworth, as well as activist Ray Rogers, stepped in and launched an ambitious crusade against the behemoth Coca-Cola. In an incredible three-year saga, filmmakers Germán Gutiérrez and Carmen Garcia follow these heroes in a legal game of cat and mouse. From Bogotá to New York, Guatemala to Atlanta, Washington to Canada, The Coca-Cola Case maintains the suspense of a hard-fought struggle.

The lawyers filed several cases at the U.S. federal court against Cola-Cola for murder, abduction and torture committed in Colombia and Guatemala. Thanks to activist Ray Rogers, they also attacked the brand image of the Atlanta-based giant, with the devastating campaign Stop Killer Coke!, causing dozens of U.S. colleges and universities to boycott the drink.

Still the company would not give up. After five years of haggling, will the lawyers get justice? In the end, they reach a settlement of sorts, but what will the victims choose - cash, or power and integrity?
