She is interested in the attitudes of both pro- and anti-vaccination families, as well as the biomedical alternatives being pursued by those who choose not to immunize.</p><p>&ldquo;This is something that public health officials are concerned about, so I want to explore why parents are choosing to explore more natural ways of dealing with immune health as opposed to getting immunizations,&rdquo; says King on the eve of the World Health Organization&rsquo;s World Immunization Week (Apr. 24-30).</p><p>In her research, King, who works with supervisor Steve Ferzacca of the Deprtment of Anthropology, plans to interview a total of 20 parents of children under age 6 who either support or oppose immunization. Having already interviewed 15 parents, her preliminary findings have indicated that some parents who now oppose immunization have had a health issue with a first child that they perceive to have been caused by a vaccine, thus preventing them from immunizing subsequent children. Others have reported that they believe in the disease-fighting powers of natural interventions, such as chiropractic care, vitamins and a healthy diet.</p><p>&ldquo;I think there is a lot of misunderstanding and possibly misrepresentation about this issue,&rdquo; says King. &ldquo; So I think it&rsquo;s useful to have an understanding of the parental perceptions and practices, and to add an ethnographic perspective to the literature.&rdquo;</p><p>King is completing an Individualized Multi-Disciplinary Master of Arts degree, having previously completed a bachelor&rsquo;s degree in psychology and religious studies. A Calgary native, her interest in medical anthropology was sparked by an undergraduate anthropology course. She now works closely with the U of L&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/research/institute-child-and-youth-studies-i-cys" rel="nofollow">Institute for Child and Youth Studies</a> (I-CYS) to bring a multidisciplinary approach to her research.</p><p>&ldquo;Being part of I-CYS has been really useful, because I&rsquo;ve been able to learn from experienced professors from other disciplines, including those involved with child immune studies,&rdquo; says King. &ldquo;I think we often get stuck in the thinking of our own disciplines, and being a part of I-CYS helps you think about your research from different perspectives.&rdquo;</p><p>King would like to see her research add something different to the literature that currently exists. She plans to get at why parents are deciding whether or not to immunize their children, instead of merely identify the groups who don&rsquo;t. She also plans to publish her findings in academic journals and will also disseminate her research in upcoming local and global academic conferences.</p><p>For more on research at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge, follow this <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/research/" rel="nofollow">link</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-name-field-op-related-nref field-type-node-reference field-label-above block-title-body"> <h2><span>Related Content</span></h2> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even"><article about="/unews/article/closer-look-anti-vaccination-sentiment" typeof="rNews:Article schema:NewsArticle" class="node node-openpublish-article node-published node-not-promoted node-not-sticky author-trevorkenney odd clearfix" id="node-openpublish-article-6246"> <div class="content clearfix"> <div class="field field-name-field-op-main-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:associatedMedia schema:associatedMedia" resource="/unews/sites/default/files/styles/right-sidebar-thumbnails/public/main/articles/JillianKing-research.jpg"><a href="/unews/article/closer-look-anti-vaccination-sentiment"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="/unews/sites/default/files/styles/right-sidebar-thumbnails/public/main/articles/JillianKing-research.jpg" width="116" height="80" alt="" /></a></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="A closer look at anti-vaccination sentiment" class="rdf-meta"></span> <h3 property="rnews:name schema:name" datatype="" class="node-title"><a href="/unews/article/closer-look-anti-vaccination-sentiment" title="A closer look at anti-vaccination sentiment">A closer look at anti-vaccination sentiment</a></h3> </div> </article> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-medicaltreatmen-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">MedicalTreatment:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/medical-treatment/immunization" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">immunization</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/world-health-organization" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">World Health Organization</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/institute-child-and-youth-studies" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Institute for Child and Youth Studies</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/faculty-arts-science" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Faculty of Arts &amp; Just remember, that in addition to sunscreen, cruise wear and a new pair of flip-flops, you have to think about maintaining your health while on vacation. And if you are considering travelling at Christmas or during spring break, your travel planning must start now!<br> <br> A good place to start preparing for your trip begins at <a href="http://www.voyage.gc.ca">www.voyage.gc.ca</a>, the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada website that gives you a lovely checklist (Before You Leave Canada) of reminders about the variety of concerns you need to address before leaving the country.<br> <br> In terms of your health needs, plan to take extra copies of your prescriptions and medical certificates, and to bring extra medical supplies and even eyeglasses.<br> <br> Travel immunizations are important and definitely need attention. Because health concerns are rapidly changing in some areas of the world, the best way to get travel health and immunization information is to book an appointment with the Travel Health Nurse at the Public Health office. While there is a cost for this consultation, this person has the most current information on the immunizations needed in your specific travel area.<br> <br> At your immunization appointment, the nurse will ask where you are going and, using the latest information available from Center for Disease Control or World Health Organization, may direct you to a variety of injections, vaccinations or medication. Some of these medications will be available through Public Health and the nurse may direct other medications or vaccinations to be administered by your family doctor. The sooner you book your appointment the better as some vaccinations take several months to complete.<br> <br> Do not show up at a physician's appointment expecting that a family physician will know what you need for a trip to an exotic locale.<br> <br> As for cost, it is expected that you build the cost of public health travel advice, some medications/immunizations, doctor's visits and other charges into your vacation budget. You will be required to pay for all visits related to travel health (even your physician must charge YOU, not Alberta Health Care for your travel medication/immunization/health advice).<br> <br> Example of costs you may encounter:<br> <br> Public Health Travel Advice ($35.00)<br> <br> Medications/Immunizations from Public Health (medication and costs depend on country and current outbreaks)<br> <br> Physician visit, if needed for medication that Public Health cannot provide ($50-$150)<br> <br> But remember, if you are travelling and getting away from minus temperatures for days of sun and sand &ndash; it will all be worth it!<em><br> <br> Lori Weber is the manager of the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Health Centre</em><br> <br> <em>This story first appeared in the December 2011 issue of the Legend. How about munching on a donut to fill your stomach until you can get home to eat? You may be filling up on trans fats and increasing your bad cholesterol (LDL).</p> <p>Trans fats increase our bad cholesterol (LDL), and decrease our good cholesterol (HDL), making them the worst kind of fat for your heart health. According to Health Canada, Canadians consume about 8.4 grams of trans fats daily. That's bad news according to the <a href="http://www.who.int/" rel="nofollow">World Health Organization</a> and the <a href="http://www.nasonline.org" rel="nofollow">National Academy of Sciences</a>.</p> <p>Trans fats are very useful in the fast-food industry because they are a very stable fat for repeated bouts of deep-frying. Trans fats are also found in processed or packaged foods because they increase product shelf life.</p> <p>Their abundance in our food chain makes it almost impossible to consume no trans fats. The goal is to reduce trans fat consumption. Here are some tips to decrease your trans fat intake:</p> <p><strong>Eat less processed foods</strong></p> <p>Bake your own muffins using healthy oils such as olive, canola or sunflower oil.</p> <p><strong>Enjoy fresh rather than fried</strong></p> <p>Choose wraps, pitas, subs and sandwiches made with whole grain breads.</p> <p><strong>Limit fast food</strong></p> <p>Pack meals and snacks from home and avoid the inherent trans fats in most fast food products.</p> <p><strong>Smart snacking</strong></p> <p>If you want crackers, choose low fat crackers such as WASA bread, Ryvita crackers or Stone Wheat Thins. And keep nutritious snacks handy. Try eating nuts, seeds, fresh fruit, yogurt, homemade muffins, fig newtons, graham wafers and air-popped popcorn instead of doughnuts, cookies, chips, microwave popcorn or chocolate bars.</p> <p><em><strong>Diane Britton is the 免费福利资源在线看片's on-campus registered dietitian</strong></em></p> <p>For an individual nutrition appointment, call the Health Centre (SU020) at<br> 403-329-2484. of Lethbridge. There is however, no reason to panic.<br> <br> There is a lot of information in the news media about the current 'flu' nicknamed swine flu (actually an H1N1 influenza strain) but before panic sets in, knowledge about the virus is key to understanding how best to avoid contracting this flu.<br> <br> A strain of influenza has emerged from the Mexico area that is causing severe respiratory symptoms including high fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, lethargy, and body aches. These symptoms sound familiar because they are similar to other influenza symptoms.<br> <br> Those people who are well right now and have not been to Mexico or been around someone who has been to Mexico and gotten ill, can remain calm. However, be alert to people who are ill and follow basic flu precautions such as washing your hands well and regularly, cleaning your workplace setting, covering your face when coughing and staying home if you are ill.<br> <br> If you get mild flu symptoms and haven't been to Mexico or been around someone from Mexico, it might just be that you have some other strain of influenza that is not swine flu.<br> <br> If you do not need medical care, please stay home (letting your supervisor know of your illness) and continue to follow the above mentioned basic flu precautions.<br> <br> If you require medical care, let your clinic staff know that you have mild flu symptoms and that you have not been to Mexico or been around someone from Mexico. You may be asked to wear a mask while waiting in the clinic waiting area.<br> <br> However, if you have been to Mexico and have SEVERE influenza symptoms or have been around someone who has recently been to Mexico and has SEVERE influenza symptoms, then please understand that the best thing to do is to stay at home and deal with your illness until such time as you believe that you need to see a doctor.<br> <br> This illness hits fast and hard, typically within approximately five days after being infected. If you need to seek medical attention, call Healthlink Alberta (1-866-408-LINK (5465)). They will ask you to call the clinic or emergency room before you go there in order that they can have you in a private waiting/exam room (so that you don't infect other people).<br> <br> You may be asked to wear a mask or be told to stay at home (quarantined) until your nasopharyngeal (nose) swab test comes back. Some people can recover at home; others may need to be hospitalized depending on the severity of their symptoms.<br> <br> As information changes quickly, the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Health Centre will continue updating about this illness.<br> <br> You can also check out these websites for further information:<br> <br> <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm" rel="nofollow">Centres for Disease Control</a><br> <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm">http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm</a><br> <br> <a href="http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html" rel="nofollow">World Health Organization</a><br> <a href="http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html">http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html</a><br> <br> <a href="http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/" rel="nofollow">Alberta Health Services</a><br> <a href="http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/">http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/</a><br> <br> If you have questions, please call the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Health Centre, ask for Lori or Dianne at 403-329-2484 or e-mail: <a href="mailto:health.centre@uleth.ca" rel="nofollow">health.centre@uleth.ca</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge-health-centre" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Health Centre</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/news-media" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">news media</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/lethbridge-health-centre" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lethbridge Health Centre</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/world-health-organization" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">World Health Organization</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-phonenumber-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">PhoneNumber:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/phone-number/403-329-2484" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">403-329-2484</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/phone-number/1-866-408-link-5465" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">1-866-408-LINK (5465)</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/supervisor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">supervisor</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-url-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">URL:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/url/httpwwwalbertahealthservicesca" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">http://www.albertahealthservices.ca</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/url/httpwwwwhointcsrdiseaseswinefluenindexhtml" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="How Influenza A H1N1 affects you" class="rdf-meta"></span> Tue, 28 Apr 2009 15:21:40 +0000 trevor.kenney 5178 at /unews
