This tragic event changed the trajectory of Dorothy&rsquo;s life, and today is reflected in an award &ndash; the Andrea Block Memorial Scholarship &ndash; Dorothy established to honour her widowed mother. &shy;&shy;&shy;&shy;&shy;&shy;</p><p>The eldest daughter of Niels and Andrea Block, Dorothy moved with her family to the Millicent area from Washington in 1920. The family was together on their new homestead for only a few months when tragedy struck and Niels passed away at age 31 from pneumonia and complications of an infection.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:150px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/DonorLundstad.jpg" title="Dorothy Lundstad spoke frequently and admiringly of her mother, eventually establishing a legacy gift from her inspiration." alt=""><div class="image-caption">Dorothy Lundstad spoke frequently and admiringly of her mother, eventually establishing a legacy gift from her inspiration.</div></div></p><p>While other family members came to help manage the farm, Dorothy&rsquo;s mother and aunt purchased the Millicent Hotel as a means of supporting the young family. Andrea ran the hotel until 1939, when she fell ill. Andrea passed away in 1942, when Dorothy was 28.</p><p>Today, Dorothy&rsquo;s family, including nieces Kristine Smith and Berna Moss, say Dorothy often shared many early memories of life at the hotel &ndash; stories of travellers, home-cooked meals and supportive locals.</p><p>Kristine says, however, Dorothy was most profoundly affected by her mother&rsquo;s strength to rise up and overcome adversity &ndash; something that was well known throughout the family.</p><p>&ldquo;Dorothy spoke frequently and admiringly of her mother, who was left as a young woman with two small children to raise and provide for when there were no social safety nets to help her,&rdquo; says Berna.</p><p>Kristine agrees: &ldquo;Dorothy learned a great deal about perseverance, tenacity and independence watching her mother run a hotel while ensuring her children were educated and well-cared for. She had a great deal of respect for her mother.&rdquo;</p><p>Andrea&rsquo;s influence in Dorothy&rsquo;s life created an independent and adventurous woman who went on to engage life in a variety of ways: obtaining her teaching certificate, pursuing an accounting degree, serving in a factory in Eastern Canada during World War II, working as an X-ray technician and operating a dress shop.</p><p>Dorothy married in 1952 and farmed with her husband for years in the Claresholm area before moving to Lethbridge. They operated a hotel downtown for several years before selling it and purchasing one in Waterton. An avid gardener and pianist, Dorothy was active in her church and with her family, travelling with her nieces and cousins well into her 80s.</p><p>Throughout her life, Dorothy never forgot her roots, or the people of the Eastern Irrigation District. When Dorothy passed away in 2010, she honoured both her mother and those who rallied around her family in those early years with a bequest to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge in her will.</p><p>The Andrea Block Memorial Scholarship is given annually to a student from the Eastern Irrigation District, where Dorothy spent her formative years. The first recipient of the award, 19-year-old mathematics major Nolan McIntyre, couldn&rsquo;t be more grateful.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:300px;"><img the award, I was extremely pleased,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo; Then, when I received notice that I was the first recipient of the award I felt &ndash; and still feel for that matter &ndash; very blessed and thankful.&rdquo;</p><p>Originally from Rosemary, Alta., Nolan says gifts designated for students from rural Alberta are greatly needed.</p><p>&ldquo;Gifts such as the Andrea Block Memorial Scholarship are a huge help,&rdquo; says Nolan. &ldquo; The award helped pay for my education and, as a result, my whole first semester was paid for and I could focus on my Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.&rdquo;</p><p>With her gift, Dorothy is able to pay forward the help her family once received &ndash; for generations to come.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div Arts is now anything but mundane.</p><p>The wall flanking the entrance to the U of L Main Gallery used to house a bank of pay phones, but with the removal of this obsolete technology, a great opportunity was afforded.</p><p>"I think people can easily agree, the advent of the smart phone has been terrific for the promotion of events and cultural organizations," says Dr. Josephine Mills, director/curator of the U of L Art Gallery. "For the gallery, changes in technology have meant another less obvious boon to our visibility."</p><p>The gallery quickly called dibs on the now vacant space.</p><p>"We requested a renovation that included the gallery-standard drywall over three-quarter inch plywood backing so that the wall could support hanging objects in frames, and we had the foresight to build in electrical and Internet connections," explains Mills. "Spurred by successful student design projects I had seen around campus, I initiated a call for proposals from new media students and faculty to create something for the new wall to raise the profile of the main art gallery."</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/interactive-wall.jpg" alt="Interactive Wall" title="The interactive wall located just outside the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Art Gallery allows people to immerse themselves in the art."><div class="image-caption">The interactive wall located just outside the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Art Gallery allows people to immerse themselves in the art.</div></div></p><p>She assumed she would get ideas that involved applying vinyl or other traditional options to the wall.</p><p>"Instead, new media faculty members Leanne Elias, Dana Cooley and Carl Spencer, delighted and surprised me with a fabulously innovative idea to install an interactive projection, which was then developed by BFA New Media major Brendan Matkin," says Mills.</p><p>The playful interactive installation grabs attention as anyone walking by accidently sets the letters projected onto the wall dancing.</p><p>"With this collaborative project we wanted to try something new and different," says Matkin. "We wanted to promote the gallery, motivate others to realize this is a creative opportunity and have some fun."</p><p>Several people were involved with the project.</p><p>"We started planning in December and the hard work started in January," says Matkin. "In addition to Leanne, Dana and Carl, fellow student Alyssa Buck was an advisor on the project."</p><p>Matkin did the actual project development and worked with the open source Processing environment.</p><p>"We used a short-throw projector and Xbox Kinect and were able to overcome a few technical glitches," he says with a smile. "It's been a terrific learning experience."</p><p>Explaining how it works to a layperson, Matkin says, "Each letter interacts with the others as well as the digital shadow of people coming into the field. Gravity is used to<br> attract the letters back to their home position; however, to make the letters behave in a convincing manner, I used about 500 times normal gravity. The physics engine is the same as for Angry Birds."</p><p>Leanne Elias is pleased with the results of the project and its future potential.</p><p>"We are wildly excited about this project because it points towards new directions in interactive media," she says. "And the fact that this was a student-driven project makes it just that much more exciting."</p><p>She adds that several students, including Matkin, are going with her to the SXSW International Conference.</p><p>"Going to this interactive conference exposes our students to things we can't even imagine – truly cutting-edge technology."</p><p>Mills is excited about the future of the wall.</p><p>"Brendan created a superb inaugural project and, with the system in place, we are looking forward to further proposals for ideas to promote the gallery and our exhibitions and programs," she says.</p><p>The Art Gallery would like to thank the experts in the U of L Department of Facilities (Jim Vanderzee, Bill Hudains, Mick Nutley, Al Mueller, Paul Peterson) for their work in renovating the wall and installing the technology.</p><p><em>This story first appeared in the March 2013 issue of the Legend. The three member jury, made up of Department of English faculty, Dr. Kiki Benzon, Dr. Maureen Hawkins and Dr. Jay Gamble, conclude Saretsky's story is a moving read that is part mystery, part dream and entirely entrancing. What is left unsaid defines the story and is most terrifying.</p><p>First place for the Play Right Prize went to Makambe Simamba, a BFA Drama major, for her play MUD, which speaks to contemporary Canadian issues in a powerful and poetic way. The jury included Meg Braem, an award-winning playwright and drama faculty member; alumni Andy Jenkins (BFA '07), Empress Theatre's summer program director; and Estelle Shook, the former artistic director of British Columbia's nationally acclaimed Caravan Farm Theatre. With a record number of submissions, the jurors were impressed with the high degree of imagination demonstrated by the student playwrights.</p><p>Both first prize winners receive $1,500 and the opportunity to share their winning entries at a public reading on Thursday, Mar. 15 at 7 p.m. in the David Spinks Theatre. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend. The evening includes a reception and cash bar.</p><p>Second place in the Play Right competition went to Chelsea Woolley for her script 1000 Names, which had rich, vivid characters and timeless potent themes. Third place went to Cole Olson for his play Patriarch, a work that takes a personal and intimate approach to the classic family drama. They receive awards of $750 and $250 respectively.</p><p>Because the quality was so high, this year's Striking Prose jurors found it too hard to decide on a second and third place story, so two second prize awards were presented to Christopher Wallace for his story Alex and to Lori-Ann Steward for her submission Marionette.</p><p>Wallace and Steward split the second and third prize awards and each receive $500.</p><p><em>This story first appeared in the March 2012 issue of the Legend. (CFMRT).</p><p>On Tuesday, Nov. 15, representatives from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, the community and various stakeholder groups will gather for the official launch of the Student-Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) – $100,000 of real-money to be traded by finance students.</p><p>"The fund has been established so that participating students can gain invaluable practice managing a real-life investment portfolio," says Dr. Robert Ellis, dean of the Faculty of Management. "This will give them the opportunity to interact and network with industry experts and other business students interested in finance."</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/trading-room.jpg" alt="Trading room" title="The Student-Managed Investment Fund allows students to trade stocks with a real-money account."><div class="image-caption">The Student-Managed Investment Fund allows students to trade stocks with a real-money account.</div></div></p><p>The Faculty has provided the initial $100,000 seed capital for the SMIF, which will be invested under the direction of CFMRT academic director, Dr. Pei Shao. Students will conduct the actual trading of funds as part of a new course designed specifically for the program.</p><p>"Students participating in the course are selected based on their academic performance and an interview," says Shao. "Eight students have formed our inaugural group and will play the role of either portfolio manager or financial analyst and work within various research teams focusing on different industry sectors."</p><p>One of the portfolio managers is finance and marketing major Taylor Nanton.</p><p>"Being part of the SMIF fund will allow us to gain hands-on industry experience in our chosen career path," says Nanton, who will graduate in spring 2012. "Having this opportunity provides us with experience we'll use every day in our future positions. It might also help us invest our own money more wisely."</p><p>In addition to supervision by Shao, guidance on trading activities will come from an advisory board comprised of external investment professionals, internal faculty members and legal experts. This will ensure compliance with laws, regulations and Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ policies/guidelines.</p><p>Kevin Sassa (BMgt '93), an investment advisor with <a href="http://www.woodgundy.com" rel="nofollow">CIBC Wood Gundy</a>, is one member of the advisory board. He believes the opportunities the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ affords through the fund is invaluable.</p><p>"From an industry perspective, the fund provides experience that may not be available at other institutions. When I was in university, students didn't have a fund and courses like this, so we had to acquire our expertise once we were out in the professional environment," says Sassa.</p><p>"Anytime you can get experience hands on, it bridges that gap between theory and real-world practice."</p><p>The SMIF has generated a very positive buzz in the financial community. Potential employers see it as an excellent training exercise, possibly reducing their own training expenses, as new recruits would be better prepared for the full responsibilities of their position coming out of school.</p><p>The SMIF advisory board is also a huge advantage for students, allowing them to begin establishing a business network before even entering the workforce.</p><p>Beyond the initial capital invested by the Faculty, it is expected that the SMIF will continue to grow through prudent investment by the students and continued fundraising efforts.</p><p>"Our goal is to increase the SMIF to $400,000 in the next three years," says Shao. "To achieve this goal, we've launched a fundraising campaign and expect that future funds will come from individual and corporate donors, professional organizations and a portion of Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ endowment assets. Our long-term vision is that the SMIF will become self-sustaining."</p><p>Ellis is enthusiastic about what the SMIF can do for the Faculty's students.</p><p>"These students will be exceptionally well prepared for careers in finance," says Ellis.</p><p><strong><em>This story first appeared in the November issue of the Legend. Having worked for newspapers since the age of 15, when she was a junior sports-reporter in Manitoba, Sims went on to Saskatchewan and Alberta, picking up a couple of provincial writing awards along the way. Presently, she is with <a href="http://www.lethbridgeherald.com" rel="nofollow">The Lethbridge Herald</a>, where she is editor of the Lethbridge Sun Times weekly newspaper, Great Reads (Books) page and special sections. She also writes freelance feature articles for Bridge magazine.</p> <p>All the while, Sims juggles the demands of home life.</p> <p>"My children know I'm in university and it's been a real learning experience for them, too," she says. "While my four-year-old associates the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ with Tim Hortons, my nearly 12-year-old sees me getting my homework done on time, and sees the work I put into my assignments. She's already talking about pursuing post-secondary education after high school."</p> <p>Despite her busy schedule, Sims exhibits a continued passion for her studies in English.</p> <p>"I get to read well-written literature every day. What's not to enjoy? The classes offered are interesting: Literature and Nothingness, Mother Figures in Literature, Portrayals of Madness in Women's Writing &ndash; this is not the stuff of dusty old books," she says. "I look at the calendar and would have no problem filling my schedule up with five English classes if I had the time to take that many in a semester."</p> <p>When asked why she chose the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge over other institutions, the choice was logical.</p> <p>"For me, other institutions were not an option," says Sims. "I work in the city, my husband works in the city, my daughter goes to primary school and my son is in daycare. It would have been impossible for us to uproot and move to another city so I could attend university. I'm just fortunate enough to live in a city where the Education program is second to none."</p> <p><em><strong>For a look at the Legend in a flipbook format, follow this <a href="http://issuu.com/ulethbridge/docs/leg061011-all" rel="nofollow">link</a>.</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-company-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Company:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/company/lethbridge-sun-times" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lethbridge Sun Times</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/company/great-reads" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Great Reads</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/weekly-newspaper" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">weekly newspaper</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/alisha-sims" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alisha Sims</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/tim-hortons" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Tim Hortons</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/major" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Major</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/editor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">editor</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/junior-sports-reporter" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">junior sports-reporter</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/junior-sports-reporter-manitoba" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">junior sports-reporter in Manitoba</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/saskatchewan" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Saskatchewan</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/manitoba" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Manitoba</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-publishedmedium-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">PublishedMedium:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/published-medium/lethbridge-sun-times" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">the Lethbridge Sun Times</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/published-medium/lethbridge-herald" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">the Lethbridge Herald</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="A mature path to education" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 23 Jun 2011 20:24:57 +0000 trevor.kenney 3928 at /unews Campus Kudos - in the David Spinks Theatre, The Good Egg has performances nightly at 8 p.m. and a matinee Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.</p> <p>Part of the TheatreXtra season, The Good Egg weaves an intriguing tale of love, trust and modern family values.</p> <p>"I loved the complicated relationships between the characters and how they evolve as the story progresses," says drama major Colleen Trumble, who directs the production. "There are only three actors in the play and their interactions create a dynamic chemistry on stage. Developing that relationship in rehearsals is one of the main challenges, but one I'm prepared to meet."</p> <p>The Good Egg presents the story of a happily married couple that wants to add to their happiness by conceiving a child. Trouble arises when they discover that conception can only be accomplished through alternate means. They soon meet Wade, who seems to be a virile answer to their prayers. However, as the trio becomes more intimate, secret feelings emerge that bring out the worst in everyone.</p> <p>First presented as part of the 23rd Annual Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays at Alberta Theatre Projects, The Good Egg promises to push boundaries and challenge its student-run cast and crew.</p> <p>Tickets, priced at $11 for regular admission and $7 for students and seniors, are on sale at the U of L Box Office (403-329-2616), Monday through Friday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.</p> <p><em>This production includes mature themes.</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-company-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Company:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/company/enbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Enbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/michael-lewis" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Michael Lewis</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/lewis-maclennan" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lewis MacLennan</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/colleen-trumble" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Colleen Trumble</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-phonenumber-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">PhoneNumber:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/phone-number/403-329-2616" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">403-329-2616</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/major" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Major</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="The Good Egg takes an interesting turn" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 14 Oct 2010 20:46:20 +0000 trevor.kenney 4230 at /unews
