The Bachelor of Management with a major in finance program has been acknowledged as incorporating at least 70 per cent of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice within the program. This program positions students well to obtain the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, which has become the most respected and recognized investment credential in the world.

Entry into the CFA Institute Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Recognition Program signals to potential students, employers, and the marketplace that the U of L curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is well-suited to preparing students to sit for the CFA examinations. Through participation in this program, the U of L is eligible to receive a limited number of student scholarships for the CFA Program each year.

“Students in these programs study the Candidate Body of Knowledge, which includes the core knowledge, skills, and abilities identified by practitioners worldwide as essential for successful practice,” says Charles Appeadu, PhD, CFA, head of Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Relations at CFA Institute. “By mastering the fundamentals of the CFA Program as well as the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, these future investment professionals gain a strong foundation that helps prepare them well to join the growing CFA Institute community dedicated to promoting the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence for the ultimate benefit of society.”

U of L management students majoring in finance learn to use mathematical models and sound ethical judgment to integrate forecasts, past trends, the effect of historic and current events and financial analysis. They develop key skills in corporate finance and investments that propel them into careers planning national policy, the financing of major projects or managing personal investments.

“We are delighted to be recognized by the CFA Institute, the global body for investment professionals. This recognition attests to the outstanding quality of the finance program at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge,” says Dr. Bob Ellis, Dean of the Faculty of Management.

Related Topics

Facility:

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge

IndustryTerm:

finance

Organization:

Faculty of Management

CFA Institute

Person:

Bob Ellis

Charles Appeadu

Fri, 16 Jan 2015 21:22:05 +0000 caroline.zentner 6888 at /unews Medoruma ready for his international debut /unews/article/medoruma-ready-his-international-debut-0

by Trevor Kenney

June 5, 2013

Matt Medoruma isn't one to have good fortune handed to him – It will be the first time the 24-year-old midfielder has ever played at a national or international level.

"Honestly, I would never have thought I'd be in this position," says Medoruma. "I'm definitely honoured to be here and excited for the experience."

Senior midfielder Matt Medoruma will be wearing Canadian colours this summer as he represents the country at the 2013 Summer Universiade.

He essentially walked on to the U of L pitch in fall 2007, having talked to head coach Randy Bardock (who will also be on the Canadian squad as an assistant coach) about continuing to play soccer beyond the youth level. A Catholic Central High School graduate, Medoruma earned a spot with the Horns but after a year of Canada West soccer, stepped away from school.

"I don't think I was ready for university," he says bluntly. "I came in and I wasn't focused with my education and my grades weren't as good as I wanted them to be. So, I decided to take some time off and refocus."

Medoruma travelled to Australia, reassessed his major (finance, at the time) and returned in fall 2009 in a better frame of mind.

"I knew that once I took that break, when I came back it was for the right reasons," he says. "I wanted to play soccer and I was excited about school again. I definitely needed that, and once I came back I was refreshed and ready to go to school."

Taking the term student-athlete seriously, Medoruma took the discipline and diligence he uses so well on the field and applied it to his Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.

"It is a challenge to balance your academic life with the time it takes to be an athlete and that was one of the reasons I struggled in my first year," he says. "I couldn't really find that balance, so it was a struggle. It took me a while to find out I needed to put a lot of work into my education and that had to come first. Once I figured it out that I needed to put the time in, then I was fine."

He is five courses shy of completing his degree, after which he will decide if he wants to pursue an accounting designation. Of course, now that he's representing Canada on the international stage, opportunities to continue playing soccer may also present themselves.

"It might open some doors, we'll see what happens when I get out there," he says. "Before I went out for this tryout (Universiade selection camp), I figured it was the last real soccer I would try and play. I'll always keep playing but not to this kind of competitive level. Now that I've made this team, it's up in the air. If some opportunities come from this, then I'd definitely look into it."

Medoruma's strength as a midfielder is his ability to create offensive opportunities for his teammates. He distributes the ball well and fits seamlessly with other players, likely one of the reasons he impressed at camp. He credits Bardock and the Horns program for helping bring his game to this level.

"The program has been great for me, it's helped me so much in terms of my development. I wouldn't have this opportunity if not for how it has helped my game over the last five years," he says.

The Canadian team will have very little preparation time before the Universiade event. Their only training sessions will come in Russia, along with a pair of exhibition contests right before the tourney's start.

Medoruma has no worries though, he's just anticipating the first time he'll pull the Canadian jersey over his head.

"It'll be amazing, something I'd never imagine would happen," he says. "To be able to represent the country, I'll be so honoured to put that jersey on."

GET THE FACTS

• Medoruma has played for the Lethbridge Football Club in recent summers

• He had two goals and four assists for the Horns in 2012

• Lethbridge product and Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta defender Niko Saler, who Medoruma played with in youth soccer, is also on the Canadian squad

• Medoruma will document his trip on Twitter under the handle @taylorgang_89

• Kazan is known as the Sports Capital of Russia and in addition to hosting the 2013 Summer Universiade, will also host the 2015 World Aquatics Championships and the 2018 FIFA World Cup

This story first appeared in the May 2013 edition of the Legend. for the ULSU because of a new executive council structure that has been developed that includes a vice-president external position. This new position will play an active role in advocating to all levels of government, one that until now was spread out among all the executives.

Despite the challenges the ULSU will face adjusting to this new structure and lobbying the government regarding the recent post-secondary education budget cuts, the ULSU is lucky to have such qualified and compassionate executive council members for this term.

The new ULSU executive council (L to R) Shuna Talbot, Sean Glydon, Adam Long, Michael Kawchuk and Katie Kalmar.

The new president of the Students' Union, Shuna Talbot, was previously the VP of internal affairs and is very familiar with the importance of her new role. Talbot's platform for presidency revolves around the three pillars of the ULSU, advocacy, representation and service. More specifically, her plans as president include establishing a multi-faith prayer space on campus and strengthening the ULSU's relationship with the Lethbridge College Students' Association.

Taking over Talbot's role as VP internal affairs is Adam Long, whose position has become the VP of student affairs. Over the last four years, Long has been actively involved in planning and organizing a number of events on campus, including Fresh Fest, and has also been president of the Board and Ski Club for the last two years. His goals for his term in office are to organize a club fair to take place during the middle of the first semester and to create more of a community between clubs so that they can collaborate on future endeavours.

The new VP external position is held by Sean Glydon, who has most recently been the founder and president of the Environmental Science Club, as well as an arts and science representative. Glydon's main responsibilities in this new role will be representing the ULSU at both the lobby organizations CASA (Canadian Alliance of Student Associations) and CAUS (Council of Alberta Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Students). During his term, Glydon expects to complete the ULSU external policies, achieve regulation of non-mandatory instructional fees and realize the removal of residence property taxes.

Former arts and science representative, Katie Kalmar, has become the new VP academic, a position she has been training for under the previous VP academic, Julia Adolf, acting as the student commissioner for the last year. The VP academic sits on a number of different Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ committees and is responsible for representing students in all aspects of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community. Kalmar plans to increase the number of academic events available to students by partnering with Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ departments such as counselling services, the library and the writing centre to develop more diverse academic workshops.

Last but not least is the new VP operations and finance, Michael Kawchuk. Last year, Kawchuk sat on the ULSU's general assembly as the management representative. As a finance major, he wants to address some of the cost issues that are not deemed 'value added' costs for students and reduce these. He also wants to make the ULSU's finances more clear for the other executives and to work on finding areas where the ULSU can save money.

The ULSU is looking forward to working with all the new executive council members and is excited for the events they will organize for students, as well as the advocacy issues they will address during their terms.

This story first appeared in the May 2013 edition of the Legend. fortune handed to him – he understands he's had to work to gain his rewards.

It was a lesson he taught himself early in his university career, and now, after five years with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's soccer team, his reward has arrived.

Medoruma, an accounting major in the Faculty of Management, will represent Canada at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia July 6-17. It will be the first time the 24-year-old midfielder has ever played at a national or international level.

· Medoruma has played for the Lethbridge Football Club in recent summers

· He had two goals and four assists for the Horns in 2012

· Lethbridge product and Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta defender Niko Saler, who Medoruma played with in youth soccer, is also on the Canadian squad

· Medoruma will document his trip on Twitter under the handle @taylorgang_89

· Kazan is known as the Sports Capital of Russia and in addition to hosting the 2013 Summer Universiade, will also host the 2015 World Aquatics Championships and the 2018 FIFA World Cup

This story first appeared in the May 2013 edition of the Legend. This is different because other companies don't offer all three services, including landscaping, fertilizer and weed control, and maintenance. As well, I want people who I work with as clients to see how enlivening your landscape makes it a healthy environment that contributes to the environment as a whole."

Nielsen says that a healthy lawn, well watered and taken care of, provides enough oxygen for a family of four, and fertilizer and weed control programs, properly administered, deliver long term benefits to a lawnscape.

"A lawn absorbs pollution, cools the air outside your home, prevents erosion, and highlights your home. Healthy gardens and trees provide beautiful scenery and again more oxygen, homes for birds and other organisms, while trees also can help block wind (a nice bonus here in Lethbridge). The 2013/14 reductions require us to find $11.8 million. Assuming no increases in the Campus Alberta Grant for the following two years as has been suggested by Enterprise and Advanced Education, this number grows to $20 million by 2015/16.

The approach committed to by our community was to, "maintain the forward vision of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge" and to not compromise our future through shortsighted reaction. "Our strategic priorities remain priorities independent of the financial challenges our Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ encounters. To take us to our desired future the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ will pursue its established strategic directions and identified priorities." The values, which were reaffirmed by both the General Faculties Council and the Board of Governors, are that:

Our people define our Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and are our greatest strength

People are the essential resource of our institution and as such the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ will strive to preserve employment. All Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ employee groups will be treated with fairness and with respect in all that lies ahead in our work to maintain our student centred focus and to ensure the continuing financial sustainability of our institution.

High quality is central to all that we do

Our commitment to maintaining high quality undergraduate and graduate academic programmes is key to our Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ mission to build a better society. High quality instruction and teaching are essential to this commitment. Research and creative activity are also key to our mission and their vitality and vibrancy serve as a differentiating feature of our institution and a central part of our culture as a comprehensive academic and research institution. High quality facilities and services support our mission and best serve our students, staff, and academic staff.

Access to our university is a foundational value

As a Comprehensive Academic and Research Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, dedicated to liberal education, that was born out of the needs and aspirations of our local communities, we are committed to providing student access to our high quality academic programs throughout the province without creating unnecessary financial barriers. Community engagement with our university and community use of our facilities play a role in defining us as a public institution.

I am committed to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ quickly achieving as much of the targeted reductions as possible without compromising the long-term prospects of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and without making decisions that lack adequate data or debate to support those decisions. While there is much more work yet to complete, the recommendations put forward to date look to achieve a balanced budget by the 2015/16 fiscal year if not sooner. The following outline the initial recommendations of the Budget Advisory Committee to bring forward a Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge 2013/14 consolidated operating budget.

Academic Staff Voluntary Retirement Plan

The Academic Staff Voluntary Retirement Plan was introduced to help address budget issues at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ at a time when we were anticipating a 2% increase in base grant funding. The plan was voluntary and faculty members were provided a three-year window to transition to retirement. A total of 34 faculty members have decided to participate. For the most part, these faculty members will not be replaced. In the situation where the continuance of a program is predicated on the replacement of a faculty member or where the quality of a program will be severely compromised, the Dean of the Faculty and Provost of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ will develop a plan for replacing the member.

This program will enable the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ to save approximately $4.2 million by 2015/16.

Ancillary Services

Additional revenue will be provided from Ancillary Services operations to the operating budget of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. Currently, Ancillary Services contributes $150,000 per year, in addition to covering all of the expenses associated with their operations. This will rise to $500,000. To support this, Ancillary Services will reduce the contributions it makes to their respective capital reserves and maintenance funds and will explore additional, new revenue opportunities.

Lifecycle Equipment Annual Allocation

Annual funding for the replacement of equipment will be reduced by $1 million on a continuing basis.

Research Enhancement Fund

The Research Enhancement Fund of $300,000 per year will be discontinued. This fund is used differently by each Faculty to enable research initiatives.

Student Administrative Fee

An increased Student Administrative Fee will be assessed. This fee will be used to preserve services offered to students that would otherwise have to be reduced and maintain student-centered projects already in progress as identified in our Comprehensive Institutional Plan (CIP). With the increase in this fee, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Student Administrative Fee will remain the lowest in the Comprehensive Academic Research Institution (CARI) sector. As well, the combined tuition and fees for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ will still remain the lowest in the province of Alberta among the CARI sector.

International Student Differential Fee

The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge currently has the lowest differential fee assessed on International Students in the CARI sector. This fee will be increased. With this increase, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge will still have the lowest International Student Differential Fee among the CARI sector.

Executive Compensation

Salaries for the President and the four Vice-Presidents of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ will be frozen at the 2012/13 levels.

Employment Costs

Salary and economic benefits negotiations are on going with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Faculty Association (ULFA). The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) is in the final year of their contract. A commitment has been made that all employment groups will be treated respectfully and fairly through the reduction process. Employment costs and entitlements are subject to negotiation with the relevant bargaining unit and as such, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Administration will not publicly discuss anything related to the negotiations or suggest anything publicly that would compromise those negotiations.

Infrastructure Maintenance and Renewal

Projects funded from the Infrastructure Maintenance Program (IMP) grant provided to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ by Enterprise and Advanced Education will continue as planned. All additional infrastructure maintenance and renewal projects that are funded from operating funds have been suspended or cancelled.

Additional Reduction Strategies

The Budget Advisory Committee has struck a number of committees to explore opportunities for reductions, structural change or revenue that will require more time than the current budget process allows for. The committees will present their recommendations to President's Executive by July 31, 2013. The committees will be reviewing communications and marketing, information technology, recruitment, finance, faculty work assignments and Faculty program costs, collaboration with other institutions, and opportunities for new revenue generation.

I am grateful to the members of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community who have submitted ideas or suggestions through the online budget feedback forum. Many of those suggestions have been incorporated into the proposed reductions. Others will be addressed by the work of the noted committees.

We are also exploring other opportunities for greater efficiency that could result in reductions that would impact the budget of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. These include reducing the number of computer labs on campus, a review of the library acquisition budget, an employee voluntary reduced workload program and increasing fund-raising and sponsorship activities to help offset operating budget support for initiatives that would be attractive to external funders such as scholarships and bursaries.

These recommendations represent the initial work of the Budget Advisory Committee. It is worth noting that there were many ideas vigorously debated that were rejected as it was decided they were not compatible with our values or long-term plans, or they would too severely compromise the student experience or programs of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. While these recommendations get us a significant way toward achieving our budget reduction targets, there is still a projected deficit for the 2013/14 year. This deficit will be addressed through the continued work of the Budget Advisory Committee and the committees noted earlier.

The budget reduction recommendations will be reviewed by the Budget Priorities Advisory Committee and ultimately incorporated into the 2013/14 consolidated operating budget of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. General Faculties Council (GFC) will review the budget at the May meeting and the budget will then go to the Board of Governors for approval at its May meeting. The budget will be submitted to Enterprise and Advanced Education as part of the CIP that is due by May 31, 2013.

Once again, I want to thank the members of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community for their engagement in this process and their continuing commitment to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mike Mahon
President and This is different because other companies don't offer all three services, including landscaping, fertilizer and weed control, and maintenance.

We want to be green by bringing your yard to life."

This story first appeared in the April 2013 edition of the Legend. throughout the city.

Nancy Walker, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's vice-president (finance and administration) is a key volunteer with the games organizing committee and says supporting the Alberta Summer Games is a great opportunity to contribute to the community, gain valuable volunteer experience and have a great time.

"Planning for the Games has gone well and we are ready to put on a great event for 2,800 athletes, but to successfully host an an event like this we require 2,500 volunteers and we are still looking for 1,000 more to fill our needs," she says.

Walker adds that a large contingent of U of L staff, faculty and students are already volunteering in many capacities at the games, but there is always room for more people to help out.

"Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge employees and students have always been great contributors to the community and here is another opportunity to give back to the community that also supports the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬," says Walker. "You will get an inside perspective on the athlete experience, and a great Games Volunteer shirt along with an Ultimate sporting event pass which gives you access to all sports events over the full four days of competition."

Whether you are 18 or 80, there is a volunteer role for someone.

"If you can bring along some young capable folks to work with you, we can make that work too. Better yet, get a group from your sports team, church group, work, or yoga class to come out and volunteer together," she says.

Games organizers are especially looking for male volunteers to help supervise in the male athlete villages, and for volunteers in the food centre for breakfast and dinner as well as the early morning box lunch preparation.

"If a specific sport is also more to your liking, let us know and we will assign you to volunteer at that sport," says Walker. "As a member of the board I encourage you to get involved as a volunteer! Please help us out by passing this information along to your network of friends, coworkers, and family members."

VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION:

It is easy to sign up. Just go to this website and click on the Volunteer tab to complete the form.
