While they may be small, they certainly are mighty. In fact, small businesses in the province contribute nearly 30 per cent of Alberta's gross domestic product (GDP) – a figure that puts them first in the country for small business GDP per capita in 2009. But it's not just small enterprises in Alberta that are economic powerlifters. Across Canada, small businesses are doing their bit by employing half of the total workforce.

The hard reality, however, is that 75 per cent of Canadian small businesses fold within nine years. Why does that happen, and what factors contribute to the long-term success of some small businesses?

These questions and others like them are being explored at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's newly established Small Business Institute (SBI) in the Faculty of Management. Founded earlier this year, the SBI links small businesses to the expertise of researchers, professionals and other business people. Simply put, the SBI serves as a hub for research on small businesses and a resource for those who own, work at and are interested in them.

Dr. M. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff want to help area small businesses avoid the pitfalls that doom many great ideas.

The Institute investigates many issues related to businesses, including succession, sustainability and franchising. The SBI also works with rural areas throughout southern Alberta, where small businesses are often the lifeblood of the community.

"The SBI is an excellent example of U of L professors and researchers working to ensure that their work is relevant and valued in the community, and that leading business practices can be adopted by small businesses in the region," says David Hill, director of Centres and Institutes at the U of L.

The SBI was established by researchers Dr. M. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff. Both professors in the Faculty of Management, they worked together initially to co-author the book Little Empires: Multi-Generational Small Business in Southern Alberta, Canada. Published in 2008, Little Empires profiled 11 local, family-run operations.

"We wanted to help small businesses learn from each other," says Kazakoff, noting that the SBI was a logical evolution of the work invested in Little Empires. "With the Institute, we wanted to raise the profile of small businesses and interact with the community. It was our way of giving back."

The strategy works well, says Paul McDonald (BMgt '88), one of the entrepreneurs featured in Little Empires. McDonald, along with his brothers Jim (BMgt '80) and Gord (BMgt '89), owns the McDonald Auto Group, which has operated in southern Alberta since 1942. While the family business originally sold John Deere tractors, it now owns McDonald Chevrolet Buick GMC in Taber and McDonald Nissan in Lethbridge.

Participating in Little Empires, says McDonald, was an eye-opening experience. "It allowed me to see how other businesses operate and what allowed them to prosper." Today, he repays those insights by serving on the SBI's Advisory Board. "They want to know the challenges small businesses face and the resources we need to succeed in the future. We provide that feedback."

In addition to guiding the SBI's initiatives, Alberta businesses are also supporting them financially. This fall, ATB Financial made a $36,000 investment in the SBI that will sponsor a speaker series and bring industry leaders and researchers – including Hunter and Kazakoff – to rural communities throughout southern Alberta. The purpose of the business education seminars is to share knowledge and experiences on topics pertaining to small businesses.

That expertise is also showcased in Hunter and Kazakoff's second book, which was released earlier this year. Unlike Little Empires though, Small Business: Journey to Success was written primarily for an academic audience, reflecting the researchers' goal to eventually develop new courses within the Faculty of Management that focus on small businesses and bring new knowledge into the classroom.

In the meantime, Hunter and Kazakoff are busy with a number of research projects. The team, for example, has previously examined why small businesses fail (e.g., owners lack passion and focus) and how small enterprises survived the financial crisis (e.g., they were already operating in a fiscally conservative manner). Now the researchers are studying why small businesses typically do not partake in insolvency processes to deal with deteriorating financial situations (e.g., owners usually cannot afford the inherent expense).

Down the road, Hunter and Kazakoff will also look at small businesses' contributions to the local economy and how the agricultural industry has been affected by changes to the Canadian Wheat Board. The researchers also plan to compare the success stories of indigenous entrepreneurs in Canada with those of the Maori in New Zealand.

"Through our research," says Hunter, "we hope to expand our reach locally, regionally, nationally and internationally."

For more information on the U of L's Small Business Institute, please visit: www.uleth.ca/management/sbi

This story first appeared in the Fall 2012 issue of SAM. "The Fiat Lux ring is a great tradition to begin, and my hope is that it will tie all alumni together in a common bond for their alma mater.

The Fiat Lux Ring is now available for purchase through the Alumni Association website.

The ring is a culmination of several years of hard work. It began in 2008 when the Students' Union approached the ULAA with the idea of an alumni ring.

"It just seemed to be the right idea at the right time. There was a nice mix of older alums and fairly recent graduates on the council and we all agreed that it was something that everyone wanted," says ULAA President, Kathy Lewis. "We sent out a call for designs and in the end we agreed on a beautiful design created by one of our students, Eric Klempnauer."

Klempnauer, a second year new media student at the time, was sitting in an introductory 3D modelling class when he first learned about the competition in the fall of 2010.

"I designed the ring on a 3D modelling program on the computer. It was my first experience with this. I just thought it would be good practice for me. I wasn't really that serious at first because I didn't think I would ever get chosen, but my friends kept telling me that it looked really good, that they would love to wear it. That was when it became quite a serious competition for me," explains Klempnauer who, ironically, received word that his design had been chosen the following spring while he was sitting in an advanced 3D modelling class.

"The design is something that isn't too bulky so it works well for men and women. It is a simple band with slightly raised edges. On the front is the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s crest – the sun – surrounded by the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s motto, Fiat on one side and Lux on the other (let there be light). I felt it was important to get the motto and crest in the design because they represent the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ so well. The idea for the raised edges came from the design of Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Hall and how it seems to rise out of the coulees. I am really proud of the ring and I believe others will be proud to wear it," says Klempnauer. "I am very excited to become an alumnus, especially now with the ring, because when you become alumni you become part of a family. The ring is a reminder of your time here and the friends you made; it is a way of connecting, and staying connected, with other people."

Lewis agrees, saying she believes that the ring is also a symbol of growth and maturity.

"We are 45 years old and 33,000 alumni strong. The ring is an iconic symbol of a Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ that is coming of age. We have reached a critical mass and we are everywhere in the world. We want alumni to be able to identify each other by the rings on their fingers. We would like people to be curious and ask about the ring to create a worldwide awareness of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬," says Lewis. "The beauty of the ring is that it says everything we wanted to say. I think it will be very nice to have something on my finger that reminds me, let there be light."

Cast in brushed silver, the ring is available in both wide and narrow bands. Each will be numbered sequentially and alumni can request a specific number. The rings will be made in partnership with Tompkins Jewellers and pictures of the ring as well as information on how to order one can be found on the alumni website (www.uleth.ca/alumni).

"We are going to begin a new tradition and have a special Fiat Lux ring ceremony in May at the annual Alumni Honour Society event just prior to convocation, to present the rings to all those who have ordered them," explains Schwartz. Since 9-11 particularly, Islam has been at the forefront of many discussions about the challenges of religious tolerance and increasing cultural diversity in the West.

It is also the subject of academic inquiry in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's small Department of Religious Studies and for students like Campbell Peat (BA '08) and James Falconer who study with religious studies professor Atif Khalil. What these students point out is that discussions about "Islam in the West" in the media, and by politicians and pundits alike, lack depth and empathy, and often are coloured by Islamophobia.

"That geopolitical conflicts have been framed in terms of religion or a clash of civilizations seems more like a convenient way for the West to label the 'other' as irrational and extremist while concealing the real roots of the conflicts," says Falconer.

As a student and research assistant in the Department of Sociology at the U of L, Falconer has studied Muslim immigration in the West, complementing his studies with courses about Islam to better understand the cultural and religious context of those he researches.

"The courses in Islamic studies have the potential to help transcend the profound misunderstandings about Islam held by those in western societies, myself included," says Falconer.
"Muslim immigrants are overwhelmingly educated, secularist, progressive and modern – that's why they immigrated to the West," he goes on to explain.

Muslim immigrants to western countries like Canada often find themselves confronted in their new country by misgivings and misunderstandings about their faith, and ultimately about them as citizens.

It was with the hope of dispelling these kinds of misunderstandings that one such Canadian immigrant, the late Dr. Mushtaq Khan, who was a senior research scientist at the Lethbridge Research Station for 28 years, and his wife Catherine Khan (BEd '72, BASc '77), who served as president of the U of L Alumni Association from 1975-1977, established the Mushtaq and Catherine Khan Endowment at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.

<img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/islamic-studies.jpg" alt="Islamic studies" title="Grad student Campbell Peat (right) is currently completing his MA on the Spanish Sufi mystic, Ibn Arabi, and intends to pursue doctoral work in the near future. He intends to pursue an MA in sociology.

"We wanted people to know what Islam really is, and that Muslims have about as much to do with terrorism as you or me," Catherine explains. "Most of the people who are Muslim are peaceful, law-abiding citizens who only want to live at peace with their neighbours."

After the events of 9-11, the need for education and cross-cultural understanding only grew. The Khans believed that in supporting education about Islam, they were supporting a future with increased tolerance and less fear.

"We thought if there was more education about what Islam really is then people wouldn't be afraid of it as much as they are," Catherine explains.

The Khans' financial support enabled the Department of Religious Studies to recruit Professor Khalil in 2007 and to attract prominent scholars to speak at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ on the topic of Islam. Khalil, who teaches classes ranging from world religions to upper-level philosophy and theology courses, notes the importance of studying Islam in a country with a growing Muslim population and intensifying anti-Islamic sentiments in the media.

"Canadians, in my view, should not be afraid. Even though there are forms of Islam that are isolationist and exclusivist, mainstream Canadian Islam, which is the Islam of the vast majority of Muslims, stresses peaceful coexistence and tolerance," says Khalil. He hopes that through his courses and the study of Islam and religion more generally, students will come to appreciate the diversity and complexity of religion, allowing them to form relationships of respect with their peers and neighbours, rather than fear or hostility.

Since Khalil's arrival at the U of L and the support from the Khans, the department has expanded its library holdings and attracted some high-profile speakers. Most notable, however, is the benefit to the student population and to the wider community.

"It is my hope that our courses on Islam instil in students a greater appreciation of the richness and diversity of our world, of our religious traditions and of the collective wisdom of the human race," says Khalil. It's a sentiment that has captured the imaginations of many who pass through the department and that is mirrored in the testimony of his students.

"If anything, the promotion of Islamic studies encourages the individual to adopt a reflective position that approaches Islam as a multidimensional display of human emotion and belief," says Peat. "Even a basic understanding of Islam goes a great way to combat ideas of cultural antagonism."

Falconer agrees, and says that he was surprised to learn that Islamic and western civilizations share the same intellectual roots. "They are more compatible than most would imagine based on modern western portrayals and perceptions of Islam," he says.

The Khans' donation has sown the seeds for a future in which mutual understanding and respect between people might blossom.

"Mushtaq was always tolerant of other religions and encouraged tolerance from others," recalls Catherine. "It was his hope that others in his adopted Canadian community could at minimum attempt to understand Islam."

The hopes that fuelled the donation to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ are being fulfilled as hundreds of students every semester enrol in the department's courses and are increasingly exposed to the religions and cultures of their Canadian neighbours.

"The fact that the son of a farmer is able to study one of the world's great traditions in the southern Alberta town he grew up in is simply astounding," says Peat. "Even in smaller communities like Lethbridge we are able to see the effects of global integration. Without founding a multicultural spirit and exploratory ethos we run the risk of letting our ideas of Islam (or any religion, for that matter) become superficial and narrow."

The Khans' commitment to supporting liberal education and the study of religion is indeed one step in the right direction toward a society more tolerant, just and curious about the beliefs of others. It is clear this contribution is helping to mould thoughtful citizens, leaders and educators of tomorrow who are less focused on religious differences and more interested in exploring our shared human experiences.

This story first appeared in the Spring issue of SAM. The Gallery, located behind the Sorel Etrog Moses sculpture in the Centre for Fine Arts on level 6, houses one of the finest art collections in the entire country.

Takao Tanabe

Born in Prince Rupert in 1926, Takao Tanabe spent the early part of his life interned with his family and other Japanese-Canadians in the B.C. Interior as a result of the Second World War. After the end of the war and having worked several menial jobs, Tanabe decided to go to art school. Sixty years later, Tanabe's work can be found in more than 50 public and 120 corporate collections around the world.

Tanabe was known throughout the '50s and '60s as an abstract painter, studying with such well-known abstract expressionists as Hans Hofmann. Tanabe's artistic development underwent a dramatic shift in the late 1960s when he began to move away from abstraction towards a concentration on landscape painting. The artist sought a simple landscape form, which he could execute in a spontaneous manner . . . one 'go' or one application of paint.

Throughout his career, Takao Tanabe has received numerous awards, including Doctor of Letters (Hon.) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, Doctor of Fine Arts (Hon.) from The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, and the Order of British Columbia. His work and the example set by an esteemed career as an artist, art educator and administrator were recognized by the Governor General in April of 1999 when Tanabe was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2003, Tanabe was the recipient of The Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. Since 1980, the artist has lived and worked in Errington on Vancouver Island.

Tanabe will be one of the featured artists at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Main Gallery in A Little History on the Prairies, opening in January 2011.

Related Topics

City:

Prince Rupert

Facility:

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's

Emily Carr Institute of Art

The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge

Art Gallery

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Main Gallery

IndustryTerm:

paint

NaturalFeature:

Vancouver Island

Organization:

Emily Carr Institute of Art & rel="nofollow">Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hannover, Germany for an exhibition from April 24 to Aug. 2, 2009.

"We are delighted to send an exhibition to such a significant museum," says Dr. Josephine Mills, director/curator of the U of L Art Gallery, who will attend the opening on April 24. "The project is particularly exciting because this is the first time the U of L Art Gallery has toured an exhibition in Europe.

"The Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum has an extensive holding of art and cultural objects and by being on display in this excellent institution, work from the U of L Collection will reach a broad audience, including Hannover residents as well as tourists."

The de Grandmaison exhibition is part of a companion art exhibition associated with a large exhibition of Canadian aboriginal objects and artwork from the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Calgary's Glenbow Museum and Banff's Whyte Museum are also lending artworks for the companion exhibition. The goal of the art exhibitions is to expand on European interpretation of First Nations culture and the influence of First Nations people on European-trained artists working in Canada.

"This exhibition was selected from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's extensive holding of Nicholas de Grandmaison pastels and paintings as well as our holding of archival material," says Mills.

Drawn from the Past focuses on the artist's First Nations portraits and on the context of his life and career and includes work produced from 1930 through 1960. The archival material includes letters, personal photographs and audio recordings of songs and interviews recorded by de Grandmaison while meeting with his First Nations subjects. Unfinished studies and sketchbooks included with the exhibition provide audiences with a view into the artist's process.

Gordon Snyder, guest curator of the exhibition, selected a strong range of de Grandmaison's portraits of Aboriginal people.

"The artist's passion for depicting leaders and ordinary members of many different First Nations communities is clearly apparent in these powerful works," he says.

Born in 1892 into an aristocratic family in Russia, Nicholas de Grandmaison studied art, music, history, languages, cartography and topography. He immigrated to Canada from England in 1923 where he had gone after spending most of the First World War in a prisoner of war camp in Germany. Settling in Winnipeg, he saw Plains Indians for the first time and determined to paint their portraits.

"He realized their traditional way of life would soon diminish and he began painting the Plains Indians in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta – eventually capturing subjects from as far north as the Queen Charlotte Islands and south to the deserts of the Southwestern United States," says Snyder.

In addition to curating, Snyder also produced a book that explored the holdings at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in relation to other work in public and private collections by this artist. The exhibition appeared at the U of L Art Gallery in fall 2007 and at the Art Combine it with an opportunity to raise funds for a worthy cause and its benefits are twofold. Welcome to the John Gill Memorial Run.

Volunteers will lace up their running shoes Thursday afternoon at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's 1st Choice Savings Centre to raise money for student scholarships as they participate in the second annual John Gill Memorial Run. Beginning at 2:30 p.m. and running through 5:30 p.m., the event is held in memory of John Gill, a good friend of the Students' Union, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge and the community who passed away in November 2007.

Gill graduated from the U of L in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
