Lasting Images - John Clark

John Clark was born in England in 1943. He studied painting and printmaking at Hull College of Art in England until receiving a Fulbright Scholarship, which he used to study painting at Indiana ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. He eventually earned his Master of Fine Arts there in 1968.

Clark then returned to Hull College of Art, this time as the Senior Lecturer of Painting. In 1978, he moved to Canada to take a position at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, which lasted until 1983. During the 1980s Clark exhibited at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and later came to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge as a visiting artist. In 1986, he was hired permanently as associate professor of art and he remained at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge until his untimely death at the age of 46 in 1989.

Clark had an antagonistic view towards "conventional newness", as he called it in a journal entry from 1989, and as a result his paintings often explored ideas of figuration, transformation and the metaphysical.

Rosemary J. Preuss describes Clark's later works best in John Clark: Transformation and the Void Volume One, where she stated that, "throughout all the challenges in his mature oeuvre, art making remained for Clark an existential activity in which the search for meaning was of the essence. He resisted the literal and the illustrative in his painting, and sought a transformational art, an affirmation of being in the face of the void."

Therefore, from this loss perhaps there is comfort in the notion that Clark's time spent searching for meaning was achieved by the end of his life, evident through the memories of his colleagues, friends and family, as well as through his many artworks included in the U of L Art Collection.

Gallery celebrates holiday season

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Gallery is home to a wide variety of artwork, literally something for every season.

As we celebrate the holiday season, the gallery is pleased to showcase a collection of its holiday-themed pieces. The pieces shown here are from Christopher Pratt and Irene McCaugherty. They give us a glimpse of the festive season through their eyes and represent different perspectives of what the holiday season means to them.

The strength of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge art collection is the diversity of art works held in the collection. With over 13,000 objects, the collection includes movements from Canada, America and Europe as well as media ranging from drawing, printmaking and painting to photography, sculpture and installation. The majority of works span the 19th and 20th centuries, but we have earlier periods and continue to grow with 21st century additions.

The combination of this important art collection at a university creates unique opportunities and makes the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Collection one of the most significant holdings of art in the country. With a clear mandate for research and a strong infrastructure of cutting-edge technology, the gallery serves a broad spectrum of audiences.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Gallery maintains the collection, organizes on campus and touring exhibitions, and provides access to the collection. The collection was founded with the goal of providing students with the experience of original works of art on their own terms. Students and faculty are able to view individual works on request.

Many of the works in the collection have been donated by artists who participated in the Visiting Artist

Program that is administered by the Department of Art. Through this program, leading innovators in their cultural fields visit The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus, deliver public lectures and meet one-on-one with students.

The main gallery is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is located behind the Moses sculpture by Sorel Etrog in the Centre for Fine Arts.

Cardiff earns Hnatyshyn Arts Award

Internationally recognized artist Janet Cardiff, an adjunct member of the Faculty of Fine Arts, and her collaborator and partner George Bures Miller are among the recipients of the 2008 Hnatyshyn Foundation Visual Arts Awards.
Cardiff and Bures Miller received a $25,000 prize for outstanding achievement by a Canadian artist in early December.
A jury of arts professionals from across Canada selected the award recipients, including former U of L Art Gallery curator Jeffrey Spalding, now President
and C.E.O. of the Glenbow Museum in Calgary.
Cardiff, born in 1957 in Brussels, Ont., and Bures Miller, born in 1960 in Vegreville, Alta., have been practising artists, singly and in tandem, since the 1980s.
Cardiff taught in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Fine Arts from 1989 to 2000 and has returned as a visiting artist to lecture. She has a continuing relationship with the U of L as an adjunct professor in the Art Department.
In 2001, Cardiff and Miller became the first Canadian artists to win the prestigious Venice Biennale Special Award for their installation, The Paradise Institute. In the same year Cardiff's solo work, Forty-Part Motet, was awarded the Millennium Prize by the National Gallery of Canada.
They divide their time between Germany and Vancouver Island.
