like a daunting, confusing process, you're not alone. However, preparing your estate can be as simple as spending a short time planning and meeting with your lawyer. Kristin Ailsby-Wood (BA '96), a lawyer with Davidson &amp; Williams Barristers and Solicitors in Lethbridge and a member of the U of L Planned Giving Advisory Committee, demystifies the process with the answers to a few common questions:</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:250px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/photo-one-kristin-ailsby-wood.jpg" alt=""></div></p><p><strong>Q: What information do I need to provide?</strong><br> A: Too often, people think they need lists of assets, bank account numbers and financial statements before they move forward with making a will. Ailsby-Wood notes that misconception actually prevents people from beginning what is a very simple process.<br> "People think they need to do so much work before they go see their lawyer. That perception prevents them from going to see a lawyer in the first place. In actuality, will planning starts with three simple details: what you own, how you own it and what you hope to achieve with your will.</p><p>"Many clients often think they need to bring lists of accounts, addresses, details about their investments and tax-related information. While this information is helpful, it's not required. I'd rather my clients prepare for the first meeting by talking with their spouse and their families about what is important to them and why. In your initial lawyer consultation, you lawyer will discuss what you want to achieve and how that aligns with what you own. A perfect plan is not necessary before making an appointment to see a lawyer. Let us help organize your thoughts and create that plan."</p><p><strong>Q: Do I even need a lawyer to prepare a will?</strong><br> A: The short answer? No. But, Ailsby-Wood issues a caution about self-prepared wills or on-line legal will kits.<br> "We have found that when people prepare their own will, things hardly ever go smoothly after they pass away. The clients' intentions are sometimes very unclear and the estate is typically difficult to administer. Working with a lawyer will ensure you understand what a will does and how it affects what you own or don't own. A lawyer will also ensure that all of the formal requirements are satisfied."</p><p><strong>Q: What can I expect at the first meeting with my lawyer?</strong><br> A: "Expect your lawyer to review what you own, how you own it and how your death will or will not affect it. First meetings are typically about information sharing – your lawyer learns their clients' goals and the clients learn about their legal obligations and the effect a will has on their different kinds of assets. Lawyers will typically walk their clients through decisions like choosing an executor, choosing a guardian and they'll identify important factors that might not be on the top of their client's minds, but that could affect their will (ie: former spouses, blended families, assets outside of the jurisdiction).<br> By the end of the meeting, you'll have a clear picture of the shape your will will take and you'll be in a position to make any decisions you hadn't prior to the meeting."</p><p><strong>Q: What if I want to leave a gift to charity in addition to ensuring my family is cared for in my will?</strong><br> A: Philanthropy is a powerful way to ensure you leave a legacy after your death. Legacy gifting is one way to ensure your will not only reflects your desire to leave your family in good care, but also reinforces your passions and goals. Ailsby-Wood notes a will should be a balance of priorities. And, most importantly, don't shelve the idea of legacy gifting because your estate is not significant.</p><p>"A lot of people think they don't have enough to give. No matter how large or modest a person's estate is, the will doesn't have to be all family and no philanthropy. There are ways that lawyers and other professional advisors can help their clients achieve both. A well-structure estate plan can give people more philanthropic power than they knew they had. It can be very satisfying."</p><p><strong>Q: How do I choose the right person for executor and guardian?</strong><br> A: "An executor will carry out the terms of your will. People often think they need to choose an executor with a great deal of financial savvy, but that's not so. Look for three key characteristics in an executor: honesty, availability and common sense. Choose someone you trust to understand your directions and carry them out. A guardian will serve as decision-maker for your underage children. If you have underage children, you should look for a person who will focus on the best interests of your children and meet each child's emotional and financial needs."</p><p><strong>Q: How do I decide who gets what in my will? </strong><br> A: "There are legal obligations that affect how you can delegate the proceeds of your estate. A lawyer will help clarify what those obligations are and how they impact distribution of the estate."</p><p><strong>Q: When should I update my will?</strong></p><p>A: "If you've experienced a big life change, it's probably time to update your will. Things like marriage, having children or grandchildren, retirement and significant changes in your assets are all occasions to check with your lawyer whether any will changes are necessary."</p><p><strong>Q: Is drafting a will expensive?</strong><br> A: Don't let the cost of a will be a deterrent to getting one. Ailsby-Wood notes many lawyers not only charge reasonable fees, but are willing to offer payment plans or other arrangements to ease any financial burden.<br> "A will is an invaluable document which not only affords you peace of mind that your family will be cared for after your death, it ensures a simple and straight-forward process for those dealing with your estate."</p><p><strong>Q: What are the benefits of a will?</strong><br> A: "First and foremost, a will provides peace of mind – the assurance that the family you love will be provided for once you're gone. People work hard to generate wealth, as well as family and community connections, and a will enables people to share that wealth – and their priorities – with those they love. A will makes good sense by helping avoid various negative tax consequences, gives structure and certainty to your plans, and ensures the decisions you've made will be honoured at your life's end."<br> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/planned-giving-advisory-committee" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Planned Giving Advisory Committee</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/williams-barristers" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Williams Barristers</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/kristin-ailsby-wood" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Kristin Ailsby-Wood</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/professional-advisors" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">professional advisors</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/advisor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">advisor</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/lawyer" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">lawyer</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Ask an advisor" class="rdf-meta"></span> Wed, 06 Feb 2013 22:20:30 +0000 trevor.kenney 3092 at /unews Costa realizing academic, athletic dream /unews/article/costa-realizing-academic-athletic-dream <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-f08386e1923102a5c7ce1c4059c73ac7"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">November 15, 2012</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>Sometimes all the recruiting efforts in the world pale in comparison to a word-of-mouth endorsement and a Google search.</p><p>Such was the case for Brazilian international student Guilherme Costa, who showed up on the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge doorstep this past January looking first for an opportunity to study kinesiology and physical education, and secondly to play soccer.</p><p>"A few years ago my brother did an international exchange through the Rotary International program and we hosted a girl from Edmonton at our house for five months," says Costa, a 24-year-old from Sao Paulo, Brazil.</p><p>"She introduced me to Canada, and I was amazed to learn about the people, the nature and everything that was here. We all know about the impact of physical activity in sport and metabolic disease, and I want to see how indoor sports like indoor soccer, volleyball and basketball have an impact on the body."</p><p>Coming from the world's seventh largest city in population, it is obviously a huge culture shift to arrive in a city of less than 100,000, but Costa seems at ease with the transition.</p><p>"It's a pretty calm city and I'm really enjoying that. Sao Paulo is so busy so we don't really have time for anything, and living here is pretty relaxing," he says. "I'm really looking forward to my parents coming here for Christmas. They're going to spend a month with me and we plan to travel all over Canada."</p><p>Costa grew up playing soccer and even looked at trying to play professionally in Brazil, but he prioritized education over sport, something that suits him well now as a Canada West student-athlete.</p><p>"It's been a little bit hard, because this was my first year and I've had to manage my soccer, my school and work, because I have to support myself here," he says of his job with Sodexo. He also plans to work on the Horns' game day staff team through the winter.</p><p>"I chose my classes well so that I could manage things and now that soccer season is over I plan to study and work more."</p><p>It was a banner year for the Horns men's team, which set a new team record for total points and equaled its best ever win total. That the team still fell one win shy of qualifying for the playoffs has Costa and his teammates eager for next season.</p><p>"I think we were all happy with what we did but at the same time we were frustrated because looking back, there were probably five games we should have won and didn't, and that was the difference at the end," says the first-year centre-midfielder. has a lot on his mind. It is a time teeming with tests and term papers, but there is one deadline the third-year Anthropology major always meets – the May 1 Undergraduate Awards application deadline.</p> <p>"I try not to forget the deadline because the application process is simplified to the point that it's basically a series of clicks that takes around five minutes to complete," says the Lethbridge native. "You have to invest such an insignificant portion of your time and the potential payoff is huge."</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:400px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/klein.jpg" alt="Paul Klein" title="Undergraduate student Paul Klein has taken advantage of the many scholarship opportunities offered by the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬."><div class="image-caption">Undergraduate student Paul Klein has taken advantage of the many scholarship opportunities offered by the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.</div></div></p> <p>Taking the time to fill out the online Undergraduate Awards Application certainly has paid off for Klein as he has received $3,000 over the last two years form the U of L Awards program. He seeks to become a lawyer, and through answering a question about future aspirations, received a scholarship sponsored by the Lethbridge Bar Association in 2011.</p> <p>While he appreciates the recognition, he points out that scholarships and awards also have a real impact on his bottom line.</p> <p>"I find they provide a nice supplement to my student loans and it helps to limit my overall debt as I can factor them in to my yearly budget," he says.</p> <p>Klein also finds time to get involved with the campus community and holds down a part-time job as a student marker with the Anthropology Department. Balancing time between his job and being a faculty representative for the Students' Union, while achieving academic success, exerts considerable demands on Klein's time - which can induce stress. Here too, he finds the monies he has earned from scholarships helpful.</p> <p>"Scholarships have provided me with some extra disposable income that I can spend on my social life when I'm looking to unwind. So I don't have to worry as much about fiscal stress – I can just concentrate on my academic stress," he says with a chuckle.</p><p>In 2011, 1,087 continuing U of L students shared over $1.1 million in undergraduate awards. The 2012 Undergraduate Awards application is currently open on <a href="https://www.uleth.ca/bridge/twgkwbis.P_WWWLogin" rel="nofollow">The Bridge</a> and will close on May 1. The U of L guarantees a scholarship to students who achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher in eight semester courses (24.0 credit hours) over the preceding Fall and Spring semesters. Awards and bursaries are also available. In 2011, one third of all awards recipients had a GPA lower than 3.5.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/bridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">The Bridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/lethbridge-bar-association" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lethbridge Bar Association</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/students-union" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Students&#039; Union</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/anthropology-department" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Anthropology Department</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/paul-klein" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Paul Klein</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/faculty-representative" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">faculty representative</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/lawyer" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">lawyer</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Five minutes well worth the time" class="rdf-meta"></span> Fri, 20 Apr 2012 20:28:10 +0000 trevor.kenney 3237 at /unews Runte, Amies earn YWCA honour /unews/article/runte-amies-earn-ywca-honour <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-42d64cfd268a6e37fe482972d110b38a"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">February 17, 2012</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>A current Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge faculty member, as well as a graduate and former employee are among the people selected by the YWCA as 2012 Women of Distinction.<br> <br> Dr. Mary Runte (<a href="http://www.uleth.ca/management" rel="nofollow">Faculty of Management</a>) and Sarah Amies (BA '88 with Distinction), currently the program director of Lethbridge Family Services &ndash; Immigrant Services will receive their YWCA Women of Distinction Awards on Friday, Mar. 23 along with entrepreneur Vicky Vannatta Miller, lawyer and community volunteer Berga Moen and 87-year-old Edith M. My first year classes in the archaeology of Mesopotamia and Classical Hebrew were what really drove me to pursue Syro-Palestinian archaeology.&quot;</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img alt="Darren Joblonkay" src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/joblonkay.jpg" title="Alumnus Darren Joblonkay has seen the world through field work programs from the U of L."><div class="image-caption">Alumnus Darren Joblonkay has seen the world through field work programs from the U of L.</div></div><br /><br /> During his U of L years, Joblonkay took full advantage of the unique opportunities the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, and its smaller, more personable nature, is able to provide to undergraduate students.<br /><br /> &quot;Smaller classes make for more interesting seminars,&quot; explains Joblonkay. &quot;Having the chance to work for your professors at the undergraduate level, to be a student marker, getting experience giving presentations in class, being part of a class project because there are only five students &ndash; these opportunities aren&#39;t available to most undergraduates elsewhere.<br /><br /> &quot; My experiences working in a lab, working as a research assistant and getting the opportunity to take on roles with greater responsibility at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ gave me a substantial edge over those students who attended larger institutions at the bachelor level.&quot;<br /><br /> During the summer of 2007, Joblonkay travelled with fellow students under the direction of U of L professor, Dr. Shawn Bubel, to Tel Beth Shemesh, an archaeological site 20km west of Jerusalem. Since then, Joblonkay has spent every summer working at archaeological digs around Israel.<br /><br /> &quot;I think the real &quot;aha&quot; moment that led to my career was attending the field school at Tel Beth Shemesh,&quot; says Joblonkay. &quot; It was the shear intensity of the excavation experience. Where else do you get to unearth a bronze spear point used over 3,000 years ago, to walk on a tampered or cobble floor that hasn&#39;t been stepped on in literally millennia, to experience a sunrise as you watch a Bedouin man tending to a flock of sheep? These and many other experiences all come together and form very fond memories of what it really means to be an archaeologist.&quot;<br /><br /> The opportunity to continue his academic studies with the exclusive Near and Middle Eastern Civilization Department at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto is something for which Joblonkay is very grateful. He gives a lot of credit for his preparation and acceptance to this one-of-a-kind Canadian program to his professors at the U of L.<br /><br /> &quot; The professors at the U of L are amazing. They prepared me for graduate work at one of Canada&#39;s most prestigious institutions. They are supportive, approachable, well qualified and they do a great job of teaching and incorporating their own research into their classes,&quot; remembers Joblonkay. &quot; There is a great combination of traditional and younger scholars who bring new ideas and theories to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. They expected the height of academic excellence and pushed me to achieve. Their passion for the discipline really rubbed off on me.&quot;<br /><br /> Joblonkay brings that passion to his work at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto, where he works as an archaeological assistant while he continues his master&#39;s degree. In the summer of 2011, he will be digging at Tell Tayinat in Turkey, which he hopes will lead to his dissertation.<br /><br /> &quot;I would like to eventually be a professor in Near Eastern Archaeology. I believe it was one of my mentors who told me once that &quot;any archaeologist would be lying if they said they didn&#39;t like digging up treasures&quot;, but our discipline runs deeper than that,&quot; he says. &quot; We attempt to preserve and understand humanity&#39;s cultural history. We are all captivated by what humans were able to achieve in the past.&quot;<br /><br /> <strong>GET THE FACTS</strong><br /><br /> &middot; Joblonkay graduated from the U of L with Great Distinction, When she began her education at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, Misak's goal was to become a lawyer.</p><p>As fate would have it (if fate does in fact exist – a question Misak has certainly pondered and discussed at length with hundreds of students over the course of her long and illustrious career) Philosophy 1000 was the only course that fit a gap in her schedule that first semester. You could say the rest is history, but in Misak's case, it's far more appropriate to ask whether certain things in life are just meant to be.</p><p>Taking a look at Misak's resumé, which brims with esteemed accomplishments, culminating in her current position as vice-president and provost at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto, it's easy to buy into the notion that things have a way of working out the way they should. That first course in philosophy that Misak added to her schedule simply out of practicality, set her life on an extraordinarily successful and interesting trajectory that she might not otherwise have pursued. </p><p>"I was immediately taken by it," Misak says of philosophy. "I agonized over what to do – it seemed that degrees in philosophy wouldn't lead to much of a career, but eventually I took the plunge."</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/cheryl-misak.jpg" alt="Dr. Cheryl Misak (BA &amp;#039;83)" title="Dr. Cheryl Misak (BA &amp;#039;83) was the 2009 recipient of the Alumnus of the Year award."><div class="image-caption">Dr. Cheryl Misak (BA &#039;83) was the 2009 recipient of the Alumnus of the Year award.</div></div></p><p>Misak followed her passion, earning a BA in Philosophy with great distinction, and the coveted Faculty of Arts and Science Gold Medal to go along with it. While she had her sights set on a Rhodes Scholarship that year, it was at Columbia Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ that Misak earned an MA. Even so, Oxford was never off the radar. Misak reapplied for the Rhodes Scholarship while in New York, was accepted and went on to earn her PhD in England.</p><p>Since then, it's been one step after the other for Misak. She's been a lecturer at Oxford, graduate co-ordinator and assistant professor at Queen's, and then steadily moved up the ranks at U of T, advancing from professor to chair to dean to VP and principal – all the way to the top of the institution as vice-president and provost. It's an impressive succession that even Misak herself sometimes has trouble recognizing as her own career.<br> <br> "It's a constant object of amazement to me," Misak says. "I had to be convinced to do each successive job. Each time I moved on, I found I was enjoying it more and more. People kept asking me to do things, and I just kept saying yes."</p><p>While the position of vice-president and provost at U of T is more than a full-time job, Misak makes a point of keeping her hand in research and teaching. She is currently working on research for a book titled The American Pragmatists – a subject matter very much in line with work Misak started while still an undergrad at the U of L. It is fittingly full circle – especially for a philosophy buff.</p><p>"Philosophy is about working through problems, getting to the bottom of things and trying to come to an understanding about concepts such as truth, knowledge, justice and the good. Ask a question about an old problem, and you're bound to learn something, if not new, then at least important."<br> <br> The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/alumni" They expected the height of academic excellence and pushed me to achieve. We are all captivated by what humans were able to achieve in the past.&quot;<br /><br /> <strong>GET THE FACTS</strong><br /><br /> &bull; Joblonkay graduated from the U of L with Great Distinction, earning a BSc in <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas/geo/extra_content/arky.html" rel="nofollow">Archaeology and Geography</a> while concentrating on Geographical Information Science.<br /><br /> &bull; He is the recipient of numerous scholarships totaling more than $13,000.<br /><br /> &bull; He is a member of the <a href="http://www.albertaheritage.net/directory/archaeological_society.html"
