alt="">

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses and public institutions were faced with restrictions to in-person gathering. ULethbridge was no exception. Academic course delivery pivoted to online instruction with an uncertain timeline as to when in-person classes could resume.

Specific focus was placed on teaching, particularly around accommodations, inclusivity and flexibility, explains Dr. Sheila McManus, history professor in the Department of History and Religion. Faced with these challenges, a taskforce of ULethbridge educators came together in 2020 to brainstorm ways to provide quality learning instruction in a blended environment. The initial goal was to create a plan for the Fall 2021 semester. Driven by the creativity they witnessed across the institution, the group agreed to continue the momentum.

"We wanted to seize the moment of heightened attention to teaching and create a baseline for excellence on campus," says McManus. “We all agreed to continue working to build something transformative for our colleagues, inspired by the excellence, innovation and inclusivity we had witnessed during the worst of the pandemic.”

David Hinger (BFA - Multimedia '03; MEd ’07), Executive Director of the Teaching Centre and Agility, says the original goal of the project was to highlight innovative teaching practices that were adopted during the pandemic.

“The ReSET project has become so much more under the leadership of Dr. McManus and the working group.”

What has emerged is a three-part project — defining the five features of excellence in teaching, sharing research to support these five characteristics, and an in-house repository of teaching resources. McManus says the ReSET project is unique to ULethbridge as it creates a shared baseline of language around teaching excellence and provides an open-access repository for academic staff professional development both internally and beyond.

“For a long time, there's been this notion that it’s harder to specify what excellence in teaching looks like. That's not true. We know what excellence in teaching looks like. It's actually very easy to define. So, we hammered out easy, accessible language for our colleagues,” says McManus.

The five features of excellence delve into the importance of caring about students and their success, inclusivity, adaptivity, and creating engaging learning environments and effective assessments. Each feature is supported by a research and resource list with suggested readings and videos.

The repository is a way to discover methods of “extraordinary teaching happening on this campus,” says McManus, and is searchable by various features. “If you want inspiration and ideas around assessments, course outlines or in-class activities, or if you’re new to teaching, or just want to see what your colleagues on campus are doing, we’re slowly building this repository of knowledge to draw from.”

Submissions to the in-house repository are being encouraged from ULethbridge academic staff to grow the resource base. Everything shared is protected under a Creative Commons licence as part of Opus.

“Whether it's a course outline, a really neat assignment that you did in class, or maybe it's a conference paper that you gave about your teaching, we're widely encouraging submissions from people,” says McManus. “Anything to do with excellence in teaching on this campus, if they’re willing to share.”

The nature of teaching can often be isolating, explains Hinger, so having an opportunity to share resources with like-minded peers can broaden the perspectives of educators and contribute to more successful outcomes for students.

“We don't typically spend a lot of time sharing with our colleagues what we're doing in our classrooms. This is an opportunity to share, which is really exciting,” he says. “It highlights for me the culture we have on campus as well, and that academic staff here are passionate about our students and passionate about teaching excellence.”

ReSET will be featured during two panels at the SPARK Teaching Symposium on April 24, 2024. Proposing a high-altitude balloon project as the centerpiece, Coburn and his 24 students designed, created and launched a remote sensing system that scraped the edge of the earth’s upper atmosphere and provided an unparalleled student experience.

“I looked at the course and thought, why not. We can build a sensor, calibrate it, launch it, do the analysis all the way through to product generation in one class – if we do it right,” says Coburn.

Dr. Craig Coburn (holding balloon) and his Remote Sensing 4650 class shortly before the dawn launch of their high-altitude balloon outside Stavely, Alta.

Suddenly, a class that used to attract fewer than 10 students had to be cut off at 24. While videos exist showing American schools launching high altitude balloons, Coburn was much more ambitious with his plans.

“They’d never put up as advanced a system as we put up, but we’re supposed to be good at this, right? Remote sensing is a U of L thing so I thought, let’s try it,” says Coburn. “We had no idea if it would work or not.”

Buoyed by a $2,500 Teaching Innovation Fund from the U of L’s AGILITY program and the Teaching Centre, Coburn split his students into four groups tasked with various aspects of the project and the building began. The design of the instrument cluster was relatively simple, consisting of three cameras (colour, infra-red and thermal), GPS, temperature and pressure sensors, two Raspberry Pi mini computers and a GoPro action camera. This was all housed in a Styrofoam shell and mounted on a wood frame.

“It was not terribly complicated other than the imaging system, which was pretty fancy,” says Coburn. “In essence we were able to create five spectral bands, which is pretty good.”

With two tanks of helium to power its launch, the class set out for a site early one Saturday morning and set the balloon free on the outskirts of Stavely, Alta. Designed to scrape the upper limits of the atmosphere before bursting, the balloon exceeded expectations, eventually rising to 30,132 metres and traversing 160 kilometres before rupturing and floating on a parachute to the earth in a horse paddock near Brooks. All the while, the instrument cluster snapped photos and took measurements as it passed through the -65C temperatures of the troposphere and the thin air of the stratosphere.

Students followed its flight via GPS and, while tracking it on the ground, performed spectral measurements to ensure the accuracy of the data collected by the on-board imaging systems. They were then tasked to download and interpret the data once back in the lab.

“Maybe we didn’t learn all that much scientifically but at the end of the day, they now understand how it all works, from beginning to end,” says Coburn, who was assisted by balloon expert Nicholas Janzen of Calgary and recently graduated master’s student Gordon Logie, who snapped photos. “That’s something very few universities can offer. They created a system, launched a system and then were able to work with raw data they had to process. They also had to work with each other and off of each other, so we had physics students working with geography students and computer science students to make it all work.”

For fourth-year geography student Sarah McCrady, the experience was invaluable.

“I was part of one of the vicarious calibration groups, which involved getting ground spectral measurements,” she says. “I found the project really emphasized the importance of teamwork and the complexity that major projects like this entail. I had no idea how many things there were to consider, such as weather for launch, and legal permissions.”

Travis Houston is in his third year of geography with an interest in geographic information systems (GIS) and the intricacies of imaging.

“I got the chance to learn how satellite and aerial images are calibrated and adjusted post-launch, how to use the various instruments involved and how sensors react to reflected light from the Earth’s surface,” he says. “This experience definitely will help me in my career in that it gave me a clear understanding of what really makes up an image. Knowing how an image is taken and the effects that need to be accounted for is invaluable when using earth imagery for analytical purposes.”

Coburn now has a template for next year’s project, along with valuable lessons learned for another launch.

“You don’t always get this level of experience, where you have 20 students in a fourth-year class doing something cool – which is what I was after,” he says, crediting the AGILITY program’s support for making the project possible. “You want them excited by the opportunity and this is something we could offer that you can’t do anywhere else. With the knowledge we gained from this experience, I’m already thinking of ways to tweak it for the next time.”

Related Content

U of L launches remote sensing balloon

Related Topics

IndustryTerm:

remote sensing

Organization:

AGILITY

Teaching Centre

Department of Geography

Person:

Craig Coburn

Thu, 20 Apr 2017 21:12:39 +0000 trevor.kenney 8820 at /unews Newberry earns 2015 Distinguished Teaching Award /unews/article/newberry-earns-2015-distinguished-teaching-award

Dr. Jan Newberry has hit her stride, and her students continue to reap the benefits.

Newberry, in her 14th year of teaching anthropology at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge and the current Chair of the department, is the 2015 recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award, an honour many feel is a longtime coming.

Newberry's success is rooted in a student-centred approach that endeavours to make students active partners in their education.

Ask Newberry how she feels about the award and she’ll humbly admit that it’s “nice” before quickly adding that, “all the hoopla is not my favourite thing in the whole world”. Her favourite thing – that would be why she’s receiving the award.

“I love teaching, I love being in the classroom, it’s one of the things I really feel I’m able to do,” says Newberry. “I may struggle some when it comes to my research, but in there – I know what to do.”

Her success is rooted in a student-centred approach that endeavours to make students active partners in their education. Infectiously passionate and enthusiastic, Newberry doesn’t just take her students on a ride through anthropology, she puts them in the driver’s seat, presents a road map and challenges them to determine where they want to go. Known for her use of group work, Newberry highlighted that philosophy in an essay she wrote for the Teaching Centre’s Light on Teaching publication.

“I’m not one of those teachers who thinks, ‘here’s the goal and now I just need to get you to the goal’,” she says. “I don’t actually know what the goal is entirely – other than thinking – and what I want students to do is wander around and make up their own mind. A little struggle doesn’t bother me.”

It has taken some time for Newberry, a naturalized Canadian who grew up in Springfield, Missouri, to find herself as a teacher after working as an archaeologist and then assistant dean at an Ivy League college. Ironically, her goal to help students find their voice and to involve them as active learners is a far cry from her student experience.

“I sat in the back and was super, super quiet and just did my work. I never challenged anybody,” says Newberry, who came to the U of L from Bryn Mawr College, a women’s liberal arts college in Pennsylvania. “I’m now much more about learning to talk in the classroom. I guess I’m trying to reach that quiet kid in the back and get them involved, because we tend to teach to the loudmouths – they get our attention. It’s those quiet ones who just show up and do the work that can get forgotten, so I try and get to that middle ground.”

Newberry sees teaching as central to the mission of the 免费福利资源在线看片, a value that must be balanced with its research goals. And while her style is entirely unique, it connects.

“I make jokes, it’s like slapstick comedy some days but that’s a little bit of who I am,” she says. “Until you figure out who you are and what that voice is, you will struggle in the classroom.”

Newberry has definitely found her voice. Her Distinguished Teaching Award is the second such honour she’s received in the past year, having previously been recognized with the American Anthropological Association/Oxford 免费福利资源在线看片 Press Award for Undergraduate Teaching in Anthropology.

Newberry has devoted considerable time to work beyond the classroom, readily accepting responsibilities as a supervisor for independent study projects, applied studies, honours theses and graduate students. Heavily involved in improving the excellence of teaching on campus through the Teaching Centre, she served a one-year term as a Teaching Centre Fellow in 2010-11 and was appointed to a two-year term as the Board of Governors’ Teaching Chair in 2011.

Newberry also jumped on board with the Liberal Education Program and helped create the Liberal Education 2850: Mapping Self, Career, Campus and Community course through her committee work for the Recruitment and Retention Project. She has continued her attention to effective interdisciplinary teaching through her involvement with the Liberal Education Revitalization Team.

Again, all her work is geared towards improving the student experience, and helping students find their way.

“I think we have to provide a lot of support as students first make that transition from high school to university,” she says. “I’m very present in that first year and then every successive year I kind of step back until it’s mostly them. They might get scared at times but that’s OK.”

Now that she’s been recognized formally as one of the best at what she does, Newberry is able to look back at her maturation as a teacher.

“The big thing for me is that years of experience make you less nervous and less frightened of making mistakes. Actually, your mistakes become the best thing sometimes,” she says. “I think you get more resilient in the classroom after 14 years. You do better teaching when you are there, you feel more confident about what you’re doing.”

She then laughs at the notoriety the awards carry, shining the spotlight her way.

“In some ways, they make me think, ‘Oh my gosh, I have to work harder now’.”

It’s hard to believe that is possible.

Related Topics

anthropology

Facility:

Bryn Mawr College

Organization:

Teaching Centre

Person:

Jan Newberry

Fri, 22 May 2015 21:22:58 +0000 trevor.kenney 7238 at /unews New SCALE-UP classroom may define future of active learning /unews/article/new-scale-classroom-may-define-future-active-learning

A new learning experience has arrived at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge with the opening of the first SCALE-UP classroom, a student-centred and active learning environment space designed for student success.
<img src="/unews/sites/default/files/SCALE-UP-room.jpg" title="The rooms feature d-shaped tables positioned around the perimeter of the classroom, each with access to a monitor that is mounted on the wall. What it means is a flipping of the way in which content is delivered and utilized, with the goal of promoting a classroom environment focused on active learning.

“Rather than using classroom time to deliver material to students, the SCALE-UP philosophy calls for the majority of the background reading to be done prior to class,” says David Hinger, director of the Teaching Centre. “By doing this, class time can then focus on engaging students in more active approaches through problem-based learning or group-based activities.”

The SCALE-UP room is designed to support these activities. The rooms feature d-shaped tables positioned around the perimeter of the classroom, each with access to a monitor that is mounted on the wall. Students can project their tables’ content onto the wall for the entire group to see, while an instructor, who is positioned at a centre station in the room, also has the ability to display content and can override all monitors.

Students commonly work in teams of three, but also engage in a larger group of nine. I had questions about a data analysis approach used in a journal article where I first discovered the word 'meta analysis.' So, I decided to learn more about it and of course, the result was my dissertation topic.

How is your research applicable in "the real world"?

In the real world, meta analysis of multiple baseline time-series design intervention models is of great interest to researchers in the fields of behavioural sciences, environmental sciences, economics, education and medicine. They often employ interrupted time-series designs to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of several interventions in both clinical and natural settings. This model also provides a strong basis for causal conclusions.

What is the greatest honour you have received in your career?

As a graduate student, I received the best graduate research poster during the third annual Western Michigan 免费福利资源在线看片 research and creative activities poster day in 2009.

Personally, I feel honoured every time I meet with a former student who shares how their statistical learning is enhancing their work, and feel the same when I can offer a meaningful statistical analysis in collaborative projects. In my career, it warms my heart to have an article accepted for publication or to obtain approval for a research grant.

How important are students to your research endeavours?

I find that working with students is a two way learning dynamic. Data analysis is core in interpreting research findings; hence it is rewarding being able to engage students in quantitative research. Students who work with me are trained in data collection procedures, recruiting research participants, conducting and transcribing qualitative interviews, data coding and literature reviews. This process provides students with learning opportunities and prepares them for future research works.

If you had unlimited funds, which areas of research would you invest?

If money was not an object, I would invest in any research which requires application of statistical theory and concepts, and would also participate in continuous professional development across the globe. light issues related to diversity and respect both in the workplace and beyond.

Presented by the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Faculty Association's Gender, Equity and Diversity Caucus, the week runs Mar. 11-15 and features six events over the span of five days. The goal, of course, is to have the themes that are discussed throughout the week resonate long after the event spotlight has faded.

"I think it's great to highlight the week and to bring in speakers and all the bells and whistles, but this is something that should be infused in our everyday," says caucus member and Chair of Respect and Diversity Awareness Week, Dr. Noella Piquette.

Dr. Noella Piquette is the Chair of Gender Diversity Equity Week.

An associate professor in the Faculty of Education, Piquette says that issues of diversity are becoming a greater part of mainstream conversation but there is much work to be done.

'Diversity Includes All' is the theme to this year's week and is designed to get faculty members to think about their own diversity as well as the student diversity that exists on campus.

"We do a fantastic job at this university talking about students and how we can support them, and while we're not trying to shift the focus, we're broadening the focus to include the fact that we have a huge faculty and staff component on campus, and it's important to think about the diversity that exists within those groups," says Piquette.

The week kicks off with a presentation from assistant professor of neuroscience Dr. Robbin Gibb as she presents Sex Differences in the Brain, Monday, Mar. 11 at noon in TH241.

Gibb will outline some of the factors influencing brain development that are mediated by sex differences. What promises to be a lively question and answer session follows her talk.

On Tuesday, the Spoken Word – Poetry Slam event is at noon in AH176. This gives presenters a platform to speak, read, rhyme or rant their words in a two-minute window as they discuss diversity and inclusion.

"I think this will be so much fun and really puts a new slant on discussing diversity," says Piquette, who notes that the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group is also supporting the event.

Faculty, staff and students are all welcome to take part. Participants just need to sign up in advance by contacting Piquette at noella.piquette@uleth.ca.

Wednesday's event is a presentation with Jeff Meadows and Brad Reamsbottom of the Teaching Centre. They will discuss Supporting Faculty in Supporting Students with Learning Disabilities, focussing on some of the key issues that students may be experiencing within reading and writing tasks, and specific strategies that can be employed to assist them.

A pair of events takes place Thursday, beginning with a wheelchair basketball demonstration hosted by Dr. Mary Dyck (kinesiology and physical education) and with the Lethbridge Wheelchair Basketball Association (10:45 a.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym), followed by a special film screening of Shameless: The ART of disability (7 p.m. in PE264).

"It's a heartwarming movie, but at the same time it's also very comical," says Piquette. "They really try and show that disability is not all about being sad and serious, it's a part of life and they do a great job at portraying that message."

The week wraps up with Friday's Strengthening Academic Capacity: Gender Dimensions presentation by Mary Butterfield of the Office of Research and Innovation Services.

Butterfield will speak to gender equality in academic research at 12:15 p.m. in TH277.

Piquette has long been involved with issues related to diversity. She was a special education teacher and guidance counsellor for 14 years at the school level and now as an associate professor, teaches courses in special education at the undergraduate level and in counselling at the graduate level, focusing on a broader picture of diversity and mechanisms to advocate for inclusion within all community systems.

"We've done our best to represent as many different approaches to the discussion of diversity issues as we could with this week's events," she says. "I really do urge everyone to find a topic that might be of interest to them and to engage in the conversation."

For more information on any of these events or any issues related to the
