As well, we want to give users access to as many restaurants as we can within the app, and this is why we plan on actually putting in the face-time with restaurants and not having them simply sign up online," he says.

Dowdy adds that restaurants will have access to a database in which they can add/change menu items on the fly.

"They will be able to add new items, update prices, create daily specials, set takeout hours, and much more."

The initial target demographic will be people between the ages of 18 and 30, especially students.

"Given the recent increased popularity in apps and smartphones among all age groups, we see no reason as to why this app can't be a popular tool for anyone in the Lethbridge area with access to a smart device looking to order takeout," says Dowdy.

Working around school and other part-time jobs, Dowdy says the app development will be done by colleague Shayan Masood, who is currently working a co-operative education job placement at Veeva Systems while the rest of the team works on securing restaurants for a pilot rollout scheduled for the summer.

The full application is expected to launch in September 2013, just in time for the start of a new school year, and as thousands of hungry students return to Lethbridge. For now, signing on will be free and subscribing as a restaurant is free, but Dowdy says they would review that as the app gains market share and popularity.

This story first appeared in the April 2013 edition of the Legend. such as entering the Miss World Canada (MWC) pageant.

The 20-year-old biological sciences student and enthusiastic Lethbridge booster freely acknowledges that parading around in an evening gown, on a runway, is about as far as you could possibly get from her work experiences at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience or her recent Co-operative Education placement at a wildlife conservation facility in Langley B.C., but anyone who knows her shouldn't be surprised.

"I have always believed in the value of being multifaceted, instead of only focusing in one or two fields. In addition to being a stable business and having a good track record, Friesen says there is a significant charity component to the group, which really appeals to her.

"As contestants and through other MWC activities either in BC or in our home communities, we support Variety, the Children's Charity and its efforts to support the families of children with disabilities, and my goal is to raise its profile here in southern Alberta," she says.

"As well, I have to also gain some corporate and personal sponsorship to help me out with some expenses as a competitor, so I have plans to approach local organizations and businesses for assistance."

Friesen jumped at the chance to do some modelling for charity fashion shows while in Langley and was subsequently asked by the MWC director to apply for the more intense pageant process, which entails public speaking, community service work and demonstrating a talent. She says competing in Miss World Canada has given her a great opportunity to meet some of the people who make Lethbridge so wonderful and in turn, tell others about the community.

"For me, this is a great chance to really stand up and say 'Hey … I'm from Lethbridge! Pay attention to us! We're awesome!' Getting involved in the community, as well as competing in the actual pageant, will give me a lot of practice in my communication skills which will be a valuable asset for the rest of my life."

A Winston Churchill High School graduate and former competitive hip-hop dancer, Friesen says that post-secondary research hadn't entered her mind until she jot a job through the Heritage Youth Research Student (HYRS) program while in grade 11, and wound up working for Dr. Gerlinde Metz at the CCBN for two co-op placements. She never dreamed that taking a job at an endangered wildlife facility would lead her to the equally wild world of fashion and pageants.

If she is successful as a winner or runner-up at MWC she has to fulfill a year-long commitment to the organization which could include a trip to compete at the Miss World competition in Indonesia, as well as a number of public engagements which would work around her school schedule.

Anyone interested in learning more about Becky's pageant process – or supporting her as a sponsor – can connect with her at becky.friesen@missworldcanada.com.

This story first appeared in the January 2013 edition of the Legend. L's Faculty of Arts and Science. "These are just the type of students we are looking for, and we hope this commitment to supporting their interest in university studies at the U of L translates into even more leadership opportunities here."

A total of 15 awards will be given to selected applicants, accepted as new high school students into the Faculty of Arts and Science BA, BSc or BASc programs, regardless of major, valued at $1,000 for the 2012/2013 academic year.

Lindsey Meredith knows first-hand how being involved in 4-H can benefit your post-secondary studies.

The new 4-H scholarships are welcome news to U of L students like Claresholm resident Lindsey Meredith, currently completing a combined degree in biology and management.

"If I had had a chance to apply for a scholarship like this, I wouldn't have had to sell my horse to pay my tuition," says Meredith. "I had some amazing experiences through 4-H. The program helps people learn by doing a variety of projects, and the U of L experience is much the same in that students are encouraged to do volunteer work and community service, which is a huge asset on a resumé."

Meredith adds that for students coming to Lethbridge from smaller communities, the campus environment is small and close-knit, but the opportunities are large.

"I have met people from around the world, I've helped plan large events, and I've used pretty much all the skills I learned in 4-H along the way. I would really encourage any 4-H member thinking of attending university to consider attending the U of L and applying for this award."

Students can register for a wide variety of programs, including but not limited to agricultural studies, agricultural biotechnology, environmental science, remote sensing and a multitude of other internationally recognized degrees, which can later lead to masters or doctoral–level studies. Co-operative education work placements and other services are available to students to ensure they are as prepared as possible for the workforce.

The applicant must be an active member of an Alberta 4-H club at the time of application, and have a permanent mailing address within the province of Alberta prior to enrollment at the U of L. The student must be registered for both the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters to receive the funds. Winners will be chosen by random draw, with only one entry per person accepted. The deadline to apply is June 15, 2012.

Selection and notification of the Alberta 4-H Entrance Awards will occur by July 1, 2012.

For more information or to apply online, visit www.uleth.ca/artsci/awards

This story first appeared in the March 2012 issue of the Legend. Alberta, was born.

"Co-op combines the theoretical knowledge of the classroom with hands-on education found in the workplace. Experiential learning is one of the best ways to develop new skills," says Dr. Mary Thompson, who became the program's director in its second year and helped shape it for the next 10 years.

With her background as a professional recruiter, Thompson introduced a client-centred approach to the program, which ensured it met the changing needs of the business community.

Steve Craig and Dr. Mary Thompson are keen on getting students co-op placements that will further their career goals.

"We explored what we could do for employers," she says. "And that focus also ensured success for our students because we prepared them well with workshops and one-on-one counselling before sending them to employers."

Thompson stresses that the program was built and refined based on scholarly research.

"We researched business trends and learning curves," she says.

As a result of that research the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge was the first co-op program in Western Canada to move away from the standard four-month work terms to longer work placements, ranging from eight to 16 months.

"We discovered that four months was just not long enough," says Thompson. "We were able to extend the placements because we had the hard evidence that proved their value. We were leaders in removing rigidity from the program, which was really advantageous for both students and employers."

It was also under Thompson that the co-op office started providing placements for its own students as junior administrators in the program.

"We were unique in that we used co-op in co-op," she says with a smile.

Steve Craig, the current director of the program, was one of those students who did his work placement in the U of L co-op office.

"We just never let him leave," she says. "He's doing a fabulous job now as director."

Co-op continues to work well for students and employers.

"The real beauty of the program is that it is multi-pronged," says Craig. "Co-op is more than a job experience; it can really broaden a student's horizons. Students benefit from having mentors in their workplace, obtaining work experience, making valuable connections in their industry and finding their fit. They also bring what they have learned back into the classroom, which enriches learning for other students."

Co-op placements also enable students to explore possible career directions.

"My co-op placement launched my career in the oil-and-gas industry. I was able to try on a business that I really knew nothing about," says Thomas Latta (BMgt '97), who was hired full time after his placement and is now manager of Operations, Accounting and Finance Solutions for Enerplus Corporation in Calgary. "I discovered I really liked the work and the industry. The placement helped me discover what the industry was all about and gave me a career direction."

Students have worked locally, provincially and internationally in places as far afield as France, Ireland, Ghana, Botswana, Malaysia, Vietnam, South Africa and India.

"The lower cost of living, as well as the uniqueness and relevance of emerging economies, make it interesting and possible for students wanting to do an international placement," Craig says.

Over the past 20 years, participation in the program has grown.

"In its first year co-op had three students," says Craig. "In 2010, more than 200 work terms were completed by students in the Faculty of Management."

For 20 years co-op has continued to develop and maintain successful relationships with businesses across the country and beyond.

"The relationships are important," says Craig. "We are pleased that alumni of our program think so much of it that once they are in positions to do so, they hire U of L co-op students."

Employers benefit from co-op, too. Businesses can use co-op placements to fill short-term needs and work with prospective employees before making a long-term commitment. For many companies, co-op students have become part of their recruiting strategy.

"The companies I've worked for consider co-op students a key part of staff development," says Latta. "At Enerplus, we are building our co-op component and recognize the value in seeing prospective employees at work before we hire them permanently. If we have an open position, we will look at our co-op students first because with them we already know there is a good fit."

Co-op continues to be a win-win-win situation for students, businesses and the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.

"It provides employers with motivated and intelligent employees now and potentially for the future, while offering students an opportunity to learn and develop as professionals and determine a career fit," says Craig. it ignited in her a passion for environmentalism. Less than a year later she was working for Greenpeace as part of a co-operative study opportunity through the Applied Studies and Co-operative Education office.

"I learned a lot about the origins of the environmental movement in my Introduction to Environmental History class, and how Greenpeace started it all," says Sopko, who then put her passion into practice. "Greenpeace gained widespread attention for environmental issues during the late 1960's and early 1970's. They were one of the first groups to take a stand for the environment and make a difference. It was because of this history class that I knew I had to get that internship."

Courtnay Sopko enjoyed a four-month internship opportunity with Greenpeace.

It wasn't always that clear for Sopko, who came to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ from her Fernie, B.C. home looking to study in a humanities discipline but not really sure where she'd direct her focus.

"History stuck out to me as a major that was challenging and also a subject I could grasp," she says. "But beyond that I had no idea what I was going to do."

Dr. Christopher Burton's environmental history offering would prove to be just the spark Sopko was seeking. By the time she returned to Fernie the following summer, she had signed up for volunteer positions with local non-profit agencies Friends of the Flathead and Wildsight. It was through that work that she found the four-month Greenpeace internship opportunity.

Sopko applied and, after an intensive series of surveys and interviews, was one of 20 interns selected from a pool of more than 100 applicants.

"The internship gave me the experience necessary to run, organize and support environmental campaigns," says Sopko. "It felt great to work with Greenpeace. I was able to take what I'd learned in my history, geography, and environmental science classes and put it into action through a work experience."

From Sept. to Dec. 2009 Sopko worked for Greenpeace in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Japan. Her background as a history student served her well as she came to the job with a solid skill set of communications and writing experience. Being on the frontlines of the Greenpeace movement, especially when working as part of the International Day for Climate Change team, her knowledge was put to the test.

"We trained for months and had lots of information briefings so that we could answer all the questions that people might have about any campaign we were running," says Sopko. "Now I feel like I can talk to anyone. I am comfortable facing opposition views, and I know I can still get my message through."

She values the liberal arts background she gained by studying at the U of L.

"I got some pretty strange looks when I said I was a history major, because typically I was working with people who had environmental science backgrounds," she says. "I now know that any degree with a focus on communication and writing is very valuable in the work world. After all, a critical part of what we were doing with Greenpeace required effective communication skills.
"The U of L helped me develop a well rounded point-of-view for the different arguments within environmentalism. I can look at things from a historical perspective as well as a more traditional scientific background. It's a product of taking different classes from different fields and looking for ways to gain practical experience."

She's quick to add that she took advantage of the opportunities available to her and recommends students become engaged and take control of their educational experience.

"Take a diverse selection of courses," advises Sopko. "Volunteer and experience different things. Make sure that co-operative education and applied studies are a part of your Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ experience too, because you never know what you are passionate about until you actually do it."

GET THE FACTS

• Sopko, in her fourth year of studies, is set to graduate in June.

• Friends of the Flathead, with whom Sopko volunteered, works to protect and save the Flathead River Valley in British Columbia. Wildsight works to protect the Columbia and Rocky Mountain eco-regions in southern British Columbia.

• Sopko is looking to continue working with Greenpeace upon graduation. She is also seeking out new internship and fellowship opportunities.

For a look at the Legend in a flipbook format, follow this link.

Related Topics

City:

San Francisco

Los Angeles

NaturalFeature:

Flathead River Valley

Rocky Mountain

Organization:

Greenpeace

Department of Geography

Faculty of Arts & helping them feel comfortable once they're here and setting them up to succeed is of even greater importance.

Fresh Fest is one initiative aimed at not only welcoming students to the U of L campus, but also introducing them to a Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ that cares about fostering a true student community. The 2010 edition of Fresh Fest proved to be the most successful week of welcome events thus far at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge and credit can be given to the co-operative work of a number of Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ units.

"Fresh Fest serves as a release from the stress of the first week of classes and allows our students, both new and returning, to become better acquainted with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ experience as well as opportunities to get involved with their community," says Taz Kassam, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Students' Union (ULSU) president. "It is believed that the first six weeks of a student's university experience determines whether or not that student will stay at their university. By offering a week of welcome activities, such as Fresh Fest, we hope it helps in making that decision easier."

The Fresh Fest Organizing Committee, a group of nine individuals dedicated to presenting a great event, worked throughout the summer to ensure its success. The committee strived for improvements from previous years, including offering a diversity of high quality bands at the Fresh U Jamboree to entertain Freshies throughout the day.

"We took money that would have been spent on a headliner and spread that out so that we'd have good music playing all day," says Cole Lehto, Jamboree co-ordinator.

Fresh Fest organizers also co-ordinated with New Student Orientation this year, providing a Fresh Fest mail-out to students well in advance of the event. It ensured that all Fresh Fest Packages were sold out.

"A little more attention was paid to finding the right vendors for the event, making it more like a carnival," says Lehto.

A new location for Fresh U Jamboree, as well as close work with Campus Security and Risk and Safety Services, mitigated disturbances both at the event and in the broader Lethbridge community.

"The new green space, beside Markin Hall, controlled the sound from Fresh U Jamboree much better, allowing for fewer disturbances in the community," says Lehto. "It also created a cozy festival feel to the event."

After 61 official noise complaints were filed with Lethbridge Regional Police last year, there were none following the 2010 jamboree.

Fresh Fest organizers met with Director of Security Services and Parking, John O'Keeffe, as well as the Risk and Safety Services office throughout the planning process, working to ensure that noise concerns as well as problems with overindulgence would be mitigated.

Fresh Fest 2010 proved to be successful on a number of fronts, producing a sold-out event that earned rave reviews from students. A dedicated organizing committee deserves credit, as do a number of Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ units that worked together to ensure a memorable experience.

Related Topics

Facility:

L campus

Campus Security

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge

Markin Hall

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Students' We are also proud of the average entering grades for our incoming students, which are approximately 80 per cent."

Hakin acknowledges that further growth comes at a price, but that U of L officials are working closely with representatives of the Alberta government to make them aware of the unique way in which the U of L operates and how it serves both the student and broader community.

"As a comprehensive university, we are expanding our research programming and that, in turn, brings us more master and doctoral level candidates," he says.
