While the majority of offices in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ are closed from Christmas Day through New Year's Day, many of the buildings on campus remain open and can be accessed.

Horns basketball releases 2013-14 schedule

The 2013-14 Canada West conference basketball season will begin for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's and women's basketball teams with a road swing into the lower B.C. mainland with match-ups versus the Fraser Valley Cascades and Trinity Western Spartans,
Nov. 1-2.

The following weekend, the 'Horns host the Manitoba Bisons in a pair of games for the first home games of the new season.

One change 'Horns fans will see this season is in the start times for Saturday night games. Moving away from the traditional 6 and 8 p.m. starts for women's and men's games respectively, the Horns will now play at 5 and 7 p.m.

Also visiting the 1st Choice Savings Centre during the first half of the season will be the UBCO Heat, Thompson Rivers WolfPack and Regina Cougars.

In the New Year, the 'Horns will host an action packed set of games, welcoming traditional rivals ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta, UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes, before closing out the conference schedule with a home-and-home series versus southern Alberta rival Calgary Dinos. The series with the Dinos kicks off at the 1st Choice Savings Centre Friday, Feb. 14 before concluding the regular season the next night in Calgary.

The Canada West best of three quarter-final series is scheduled for Feb. 21-23 with the Canada West Final Four being hosted by the highest remaining seed the following week. The CIS Final 8 will be hosted by Carleton ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Ottawa, Mar. 7-9, 2014.

On the women's side, the opening round is scheduled to start a week later but could move to the same weekend as the men's quarter-final if a scheduling conflict is created with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Regina and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary hosting the CIS Volleyball Championships. The Canada West Final Four will be hosted by the highest remaining seed, Mar. 7-8 and the CIS Final 8 will be hosted by the three-time defending champion ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Windsor.

Once again this season, all Canada West basketball games will be webcast on www.canadawest.tv.

Past shaping the future

The coulees offered extraordinary opportunities: dramatic heights and depths unusual in the Prairies, and the possibility of outlook, proximity to the river and a microclimate milder than the windswept flatlands.

Standing there on the far edge of the coulee I saw etched against the sky the light tracery of an old iron railway bridge, 300 feet in the air, spanning a mile across the river.

I came to the conclusion that though any building upon the exposed flatland should be interred in earth berms so that they would become part of the land, the academic building could span the coulees and, like the old bridge in its rigid flatness, reveal the rich contours of even the most level prairie.

It seemed to me that the top storey of the university should lie below the tableland in an uncompromising straight line spanning the haunches of
the prairie.

When renowned Canadian architect, the late Dr. Arthur Erickson (LLD '81), first came to Lethbridge to design ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall and formulate the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Development Plan, he was in awe of the coulee landscape, inspired by the High Level Bridge and concluded the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ should be part of the land.

"Architecture, as I see it, is the art of composing spaces in response to existing environmental and urbanistic conditions to answer a client's needs," Erickson once said. "In this way the building becomes the resolution between its inner being and the outer conditions imposed upon it. It is never solitary but is part of its setting and thus must blend in a timeless way with its surroundings, yet show its own fresh presence."

The construction of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall began with a simple sod turning ceremony.

The vision as outlined in the 1969 Erickson-Massey Development Plan saw academic space integrated with residences "so that learning becomes part of living." The 1969 planning objectives also included attractive pedestrian walkways that linked to green spaces; closely knit, clear organization of campus buildings that took advantage of unique views of the river valley; and building sites chosen to ensure reverence, preservation and protection of the coulee landscape.

Construction of the original ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall was a monumental task.

Over the years, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ campus has expanded and evolved with recommendations initially set out in the Campus Development Plan Review (1993), the Master Plan Report (2000) and the Core Campus Expansion Plan (2001) – the latter of which is the springboard for the new ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Campus Master Plan (UCMP), which was ratified by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors in December 2012.

Spencer Court, architect and associate director of Campus Planning and Architecture at the U of L, has been leading the current UCMP renewal. He says the new plan takes previous planning history into consideration and maintains key planning initiatives while advancing the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's current strategic goals.

"Key elements from past plans have been retained, but the earliest plan had the most fundamentally correct principles or truths that continue to provide value and timeless importance today," he says.

Those principles of strengthening the existing site and building features, creating a compact campus, integrating campus with nature, and using an appropriate brand of architecture to produce a unique campus identity and experience are instilled in the 2012 plan.

Prepared in a collaborative effort with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ by Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Planners, Gibbs Gage Architects and Educational Consulting Services, the UCMP sets out a series of recommendations aimed at guiding larger-scale planning decisions for the main campus of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ over the next 25 years.

According to the UCMP, these guidelines "accentuate the existing campus design – organizing systems to allow the unique beauty, original order, coherence and distinctive setting of the campus to re-emerge." The UCMP suggests "a highly interconnected system of buildings and pedestrian networks to create an intimate and harmonized learning environment, integrating both academic and residential programs."

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall as we see it today, nestled in the coulees and taking advantage of the natural landscape.

What makes the UCMP unique is the way it frames and defines the academic core with a celebrated gateway accessing the heart of campus, while promoting pedestrian-friendliness and retaining the physical geography that informs future buildings and outdoor spaces.

"Campuses are like people in that they mature and become complete over time," says Court. "As key participants at a critical point in the development of our campus, we are privileged to produce a planning vision at a time when many are likely to witness the campus evolve into a more complete place."

The UCMP points to three key directives that align with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's 2009-2013 Strategic Plan and 2011-2015 Capital Plan. The first is to physically support the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's mandate to be a comprehensive and academic research institution and to provide opportunities for a community of learners – students, faculty, researchers and staff – to interact in purposeful spaces. Second is to reinforce the quality of built and natural environments at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ with an emphasis on improving campus life and the everyday student experience. Third, the plan will provide guidance in planning and management of assets while being stewards of the land.

These directives will aid in creating the physical "Destination U" that is currently being defined at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon agrees.

He says this UCMP is vital for establishing this legacy.

"As individuals who have various roles on campus, we are at one point in time, but universities live for a long, long time. It's critical that we look to the future from a planning perspective, and plan for years ahead that we can't even imagine. It is vitally important that our buildings and grounds deliver on the notion of the Destination ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ," says Mahon. "The U of L is very fortunate to have had the kind of vision that Erickson had around building into the coulees and really connecting the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ with the topography and with nature."

The UCMP aims to create a unique identity to differentiate the U of L from other universities and to offer a distinctive and memorable experience for its students. To do that, the plan outlines specific design work including a refocused ceremonial entrance along Aperture Drive, and framing a new "Coulee Quadrangle" north of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Library, bordered by ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall and future buildings to form a campus heart. The UCMP also establishes a network of interconnected buildings that engage the coulees using a unique brand of landform architecture that fully integrates with the landscape. In addition, the construction of the "Prairie Quadrangle" adjacent to Markin Hall will serve to improve connectivity from the academic core to Exploration Place.

The updated Campus Master Plan will further the vision first established in 1969.

One of the biggest values of the new UCMP is creating a compact campus that fosters a better sense of community. Although the UCMP organizes the physical campus, it is the arrangement of those spaces and places that not only leads to a sense of community but also supports academic programming and student life.

Establishing Aperture Drive as the ceremonial entrance to the U of L is just the beginning. The gateway will be framed with a building element linking the Library to the Students' Union Building, as well as a signature building travelling southward that responds to the coulee setting and the Oldman River vista. This building will act as a bridge directly linking the residence precinct to the rest of campus.

Retaining the land in its natural state is also part of the UCMP proposal, and so, the natural coulee space south of the library will be left in its pristine state to preserve the natural view. It's the shared experience of the beautiful scenery of the unique prairie and coulee landscape that brings the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community together and that's an important consistency of the UCMP, says Court.

"We are located in a world-class, unique setting that our forebears committed to being, literally, in this place. That is the driving force in how we go forward," he says. "It is the threshold experience between plateau and river valley we want to be, and since we are here, we should capitalize on that because in the physical sense it's one of our most significant differentiators."

While the prairie land surrounding the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is vast, a key UCMP goal is to create a campus with synergy, ease of access and more importantly, logical pedestrian circulation.

"There's a point where everyone who arrives here by transit, bicycle or automobile becomes a pedestrian, and in the master plan the campus nucleus is predominantly pedestrian-based," says Court. "The master plan has tried to focus on creating a compact, pedestrian-oriented, connected campus that responds to external factors such as weather or the opportunity for memorable views and seriously considers how people move through it."

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Campus Master Plan is just that – a plan. At this point, campus planners have not initiated detailed design studies, but most of the features will likely be developed over time. The recommendations in the UCMP, however, are critical for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to reach its strategic goals, says Chris Eagan, director of Facilities.

"The UCMP follows the institution's strategic planning. It allows the creation of a common vision of what space, building and landscape places look like to fulfill our strategic goals," he says. "The UCMP is a broad vision that will be accomplished incrementally through individual capital projects. These projects have urgent and important needs that must be subservient to the institutional requirements outlined in the master plan. It will give the structure and guidance of university planners to all those who design and implement the plan for years to come."

After the UCMP is formally ratified in December 2012, a public open house celebrating the new plan and its document release will be held early in the new year.

According to Court, the new UCMP offers many advantages as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ looks to the future.

"Overall, it's addressing original concepts that the institution has already put substantial resources and value into," he says. "Those early ideas are treasured fidelities – concepts we shouldn't turn our backs on. If we've learned anything, we've learned that they are important and they still apply going forward."

Defining the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's future

Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to campus.

As we begin 2012, our 45th anniversary year, it is important to focus our efforts to develop and implement intentional strategies that will support our continuing maturation as a comprehensive, destination university.

Current budget challenges dictate that we are faced with difficult choices, but this can be seen as an opportunity to be intentional in how we develop and mature as an institution.

When I talk with faculty colleagues and hear of their aspirations and what they want to accomplish in the coming years, I am convinced that this is a time to be bold.

It is also a time to work together to define and build our future.

We are in the enviable position of being able to transform the future of our ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, and we will do so by moving forward with intentional strategies that maximize our resources.

The changing landscape in Alberta, Canada and beyond suggests we need to ensure that we are envisioning our future and at the same time re-examining our present business practices.

In 2012, we will revisit and build upon our present strategic plan. In doing so, we will ensure that this plan is consistent with our academic and research strategies as well as emergent concepts such as further establishing the U of L as a true destination university, empowering our students to foster community engagement and citizenship and building a campus wide framework for recruiting and supporting Blackfoot and First Nations Métis and Inuit students. All of these strategies will be built on the solid foundation formed by our commitment to provide academic programming of the highest quality.

After lengthy consideration, I have created a President's Task Force on Budget Process. This task force will review our current budget process and make recommendations to the president's executive team that will support both short- and long-term planning, promote sound decision-making in support of institutional priorities, and ensure that a sustainable operating budget is continuously maintained. The task force will seek input from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community.

At 45 years old, the U of L is relatively young when compared to many other universities.

The U of L has made great strides in the past 45 years, and in many ways our values still reflect the bold and independent ideals of our founders. As we look ahead, we will continue to grow our reputation provincially, nationally and globally because of the commitment our faculty and staff have to working together and supporting each other and our students.

The future is ours to define and the choices are ours to make.

Theatrextra opens with dramatic tale

With a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, the stormy tale of The Song of the Say-Sayer, by Daniel Danis, rolls into the David Spinks Theatre in the new year.

Appearing Jan. 20-22 at 8 p.m. nightly (with a 2 p.m. matinee on Jan. 22), TheatreXtra's third production of the season explores the trauma and tribulations of four extraordinary orphaned siblings.

"I'd describe this play as a psychological thriller combined with a magical bedtime story," says Genevieve Pare, drama major and director. "It's a dramatic play, but magical and fantastical things are woven into the story."

As audiences have come to expect with TheatreXtra, creativity takes centre stage with a minimized use of sets and props.

"This play engages the imagination; the kind of imagination we had as children. At certain points, it is up to the audience to use their own imagination to create their own interpretation," Pare adds. "I was introduced to the script by one of my professors. I thought it would make a great show for TheatreXtra because it was about the characters and story rather than about props and set. It's written in a style I've never experienced."

Featuring a live percussion ensemble, the whimsy of The Song of the Say-Sayer leaves an indelible impression on audiences.

Tickets are available at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Box Office (403-329-2616) beginning Jan. 10. Regular hours for the box office are Monday through Friday 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are priced at $11 regular, $7 for students and seniors.

The majority of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus will close its doors for the holiday season beginning 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 24. The campus will essentially be closed from this date through to 5 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4. However, those hoping to visit the U of L's athletic facilities will still have the opportunity to do so throughout the holiday season.

1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness

The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, the Fitness Centre, the Ascent Climbing Centre and the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre are all open over the holidays - except for Christmas Day (Saturday, Dec. 25) and New Year's Day (Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011).

To walk, swim or run off your turkey, ham and holiday snacks, visit the following fitness facility websites to learn more about their holiday operating hours: Max Bell Pool Schedule; Ascent Climbing Centre Schedule; Fitness Centre Schedule.

Semester break offers opportunity to reflect

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President Dr. Mike Mahon chats about what's happening in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community

It's hard to believe the first semester is already coming to a close and the Christmas break is nearly upon us.

Since taking over the president's position in July, the last six months have been a whirlwind of activity, and never more than in the past few weeks. I was chastised the other morning by one of the regulars in the gym for being conspicuously absent, but thanks to a very heavy travel schedule that took me to a number of meetings in our national and provincial capitals, I have spent more time on airplanes than in gymnasiums.

A four-day trip to Ottawa with Vice-President, Research, Dr. Dan Weeks and Director, Government Relations, Richard Westlund, was extremely productive. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with local MP Rick Casson and Prime Minister Stephen Harper in his Centre Block office. It was wonderful to be able to discuss with Prime Minister Harper the outstanding research that is being conducted here at the U of L and to outline the strategic goals of the institution as we move forward.

I was also very fortunate to be able to address the Alberta Caucus, of which 17 Alberta MPs were able to attend. Subsequent meetings with members of the Senate, select MPs and deputy ministers, Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach and the Alberta Rural Caucus, all served to educate our political leaders about the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's mandate. Our conversations spoke about the student-first culture we are creating, the focus on our continued emergence as a comprehensive university that embraces both graduate and undergraduate studies, the introduction of our community service learning model and the goal to make the
U of L a destination university for students from all corners of the globe.

The biggest task in the new year will be to follow up on these conversations and further explore the many initiatives that were discussed.

When I think of the Christmas season, I think of it as a time to take stock of all that we are thankful for, and looking around campus, I see many reasons to give thanks.

First and foremost, we must thank our students for choosing the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and putting their faith in us to help them achieve their educational goals. The energy, life and enthusiasm they bring to campus create a vibrancy not found in any other workplace.

I want to thank our staff for their commitment to the U of L, making sure that the doors are always open, the lights are on, the classrooms are clean and the day-to-day operations of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ run as seamlessly as possible.

Our faculty, and their continued willingness to go above and beyond in ensuring our undergraduate students see success in the classroom, and our graduate students seek success in their research initiatives, also deserves to be thanked.

Maureen and I also want to thank the entire ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community for accepting us into your family and making our transition to the U of L so comfortable.

As a way to express our thanks, I invite everyone to the annual Christmas Reception, Dec. 22 in the Atrium, where we can all take a breath after a busy semester and enjoy each other's company as we head into the semester break.

Culture Vulture Saturdays bring community to campus

Wipe away those winter blues and spend the day in the Atrium for Culture Vulture Saturday.

Art meets chemistry in the Jan. 15 edition of the popular, community-friendly program, running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Using ink from berries, participants will have the opportunity to make a very unique art project.

"The month of January not only marks a new year, but also welcomes a new exhibit in the main gallery," says Rosalind Jeffrey, Culture Vulture program co-ordinator. "A Little History on the Prairies features the Nanton series of photographs by Geoffrey James and works by Margaret Shelton, which showcase the prairie landscape, a part of who we are as Canadians. The exhibit also includes sketches by Group of Seven artist, A.Y. Jackson, done during his time in Pincher Creek."

After studying these landscapes, participants take a step back in time and will make their own ink from the juice of berries.

"Art meets chemistry in this activity, which is perfect for art enthusiasts of all ages," says Jeffrey. "You'll be able to use your handmade ink to sketch your own prairie landscape. Perhaps you'll want to include a raspberry bush to remind you that spring is on its way!"

Supplies are provided and the admission to Culture Vulture Saturday is always free.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President Dr. Mike Mahon chats about what's happening in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community

It's hard to believe the first semester is already coming to a close and the Christmas break is nearly upon us.

Since taking over the president's position in July, the last six months have been a whirlwind of activity, and never more than in the past few weeks. I was chastised the other morning by one of the regulars in the gym for being conspicuously absent, but thanks to a very heavy travel schedule that took me to a number of meetings in our national and provincial capitals, I have spent more time on airplanes than in gymnasiums.

A four-day trip to Ottawa with Vice-President, Research, Dr. Dan Weeks and Director, Government Relations, Richard Westlund, was extremely productive. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with local MP Rick Casson and Prime Minister Stephen Harper in his Centre Block office. It was wonderful to be able to discuss with Prime Minister Harper the outstanding research that is being conducted here at the U of L and to outline the strategic goals of the institution as we move forward.

The biggest task in the new year will be to follow up on these conversations and further explore the many initiatives that were discussed.

When I think of the Christmas season, I think of it as a time to take stock of all that we are thankful for, and looking around campus, I see many reasons to give thanks.

First and foremost, we must thank our students for choosing the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and putting their faith in us to help them achieve their educational goals. The energy, life and enthusiasm they bring to campus create a vibrancy not found in any other workplace.

I want to thank our staff for their commitment to the U of L, making sure that the doors are always open, the lights are on, the classrooms are clean and the day-to-day operations of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ run as seamlessly as possible.

Our faculty, and their continued willingness to go above and beyond in ensuring our undergraduate students see success in the classroom, and our graduate students seek success in their research initiatives, also deserves to be thanked.

Maureen and I also want to thank the entire ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community for accepting us into your family and making our transition to the U of L so comfortable.

As a way to express our thanks, I invite everyone to the annual Christmas Reception,
Dec. 22 in the Atrium, where we can all take a breath after a busy semester and enjoy each other's company as we head into the semester break.
