Teacher Job Fair connects students to employers

Even in a challenging economy, people still have to learn - and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Education is well known for supplying high-quality teachers to the profession who work locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Since 2003, the Faculty's well-deserved reputation for excellence has brought more than 30 school boards or educational organizations to its annual Teacher Job Fair.

This year, the Teacher Job Fair takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 23, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall Atrium.

The Teacher Job Fair allows students opportunity to establish one-on-one contact with representatives from prospective school boards from as far as the United Kingdom.

"We provide a service to current students and recent graduates that allows them to interact with future employers," says Nicole Spence, Teacher Job Fair co-ordinator. "Many students will be ready to teach within the next few months and the job fair can present opportunities for employment. Some employers will even decide to personally interview or make group presentations to upcoming grads at this job fair."

Spence adds that the fair is not just for impending graduates but for all teachers beginning to chart their career path.

"We encourage third- and fourth-year students to attend the job fair at some point during the day to talk or interview with the delegates. It's a great experience for both employers and students to collect information about potential opportunities with each school board or agency."

The Faculty of Education offers some of the most extensive practical teaching experience in Canada – with 27 weeks of practical work placement, students often receive double the amount of time in front of a classroom as other programs, and find they turn their experiences with the many teacher partners who mentor U of L students into long-term work relationships.

This year, the Teacher Job Fair takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall Atrium.

"The job fair is an excellent opportunity to help our students gain contacts for employment," says Nicole Spence, Teacher Job Fair co-ordinator. "The fair is a service we offer to both current students and recent graduates so they can interact with employers."

Job fair delegates are primarily Alberta school board representatives but there is also a strong international presence, while a number of private schools also attend.

"The delegates are generally part of the administrative team and human resources core from each school board/agency," says Spence. "There are representatives from our local schools, as well global interest in our students from Australia, the United Kingdom and beyond.

"Our students will be ready to start their careers and step into the classroom within the next few months and the job fair can present viable opportunities for employment. Some prospective employers take this opportunity to interview or make group presentations."

Stribbell able to take education abroad

As a teacher, Howard Stribbell (BA/BEd '98, MEd '04) understands you can only make true assessments by comparing apples to apples. Now that he has the perspective of an administrator, he's able to do just that.

Stribbell, the Head of Schools at the International School of Macao (TIS) in China, says he always knew he was getting ahead of the competition by earning his teaching degree at the U of L, but he never really understood by how much.

"When you're in it and you're going to school, you don't realize what you have compared to other places," says Stribbell. "When I was in the program, I got to build great relationships with my professors, both in and outside of class. But I was fairly naïve, I didn't know that wasn't common."

Alumnus Howard Stribbell is the Head of Schools at the International School of Macao. He's back at the U of L for the Faculty of Education Teacher Job Fair.

When he began teaching, he quickly realized other differences between his U of L Faculty of Education experience and the experiences of those who studied elsewhere.

"The structure of the program, with so many practical hours and how they have us in the field, doing the work, all reinforced by workshops and support from the faculty and teacher mentors, makes all the difference," he says. "I didn't realize this until I became a teacher and started to see the differences between student teachers. When I became an administrator and would look at graduates coming out of the universities, then I could really see a difference."

Stribbell will be back at the U of L for the Jan. 19 Faculty of Education Teacher Job Fair (9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the UHall Atrium). His administrative role in Macao is not only a testament to the value of his U of L education, but it also provides him a platform to recruit new teachers for his school. The fact he comes home to bring U of L grads on board speaks to his faith in the program.

"We notice it over here, we've had student teachers from other institutions and we've also had a U of L student teacher, and our second one has just joined us," says Stribbell. "The quality between them is very different, and it comes down to the amount of hours they are able to spend doing the practical teaching."

Stribbell started his teaching career at Erle Rivers High School in Milk River, shortly after earning his BA/BEd degree. He spent eight years there, working his way up from a rookie teacher to vice principal. An Alberta Teachers' Association advertisement trumpeting the establishment of a new international school that was going to implement the Alberta educational curriculum led Stribbell and his family to Macao.

"It's been a world of opportunity," he says. "The whole world of international teaching was opened up for me, and you realize how big the demand is for Canadian teachers."
The school was established in 2002 to provide a Canadian curriculum and accreditation to local and expatriate students. With English as the primary language of instruction, students graduate with an Alberta High School diploma. Located on the campus of Macau ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Science and Technology, close to 900 students from pre-K to Grade 12 currently attend.

Stribbell says parents had to take a leap of faith to trust the teaching methods they introduced.

"Originally, parents just had to trust us," he says. "They really had to suspend their disbelief and trust us when we told them that the Alberta curriculum will be world recognized and that students would be able to get into universities around the world."

Two graduating classes later, and a host of success stories to tell, have solidified the approach. Emphasizing critical thinking, collaborative working, the ability to formulate an independent opinion and defend it both in written work and orally, are new concepts to traditional Chinese education but they have been embraced. So to has the community atmosphere cultivated by the school, something Stribbell recalls from his time at the U of L.

"The ability to take risks has always been encouraged at the
U of L, as well as the importance of building relationships," he says. "When we live over here, we're a community. Teachers work together, socialize together, play together and you really build a different kind of relationship with your co-workers. The U of L helped instill that sense of community that I hope to try and reflect here at the school."

· Stribbell earned his Masters degree from the U of L in 2004, while still teaching at Erle Rivers High School. He combined online courses with on campus and independent study work.

· Macao is situated 60km southwest of Hong Kong, and, along with Hong Kong, is one of two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China.

· The International School of Macao (TIS) has students representing 42 different nationalities, with about 40 per cent of the student population from the local area.

· Stribbell says he's looking for a special kind of teacher at the Job Fair. "I'm looking for students who are interested in adventure, are open to new things and who can demonstrate they have taken the initiative. We're a young school, so we're always looking for new ways to do things. The status quo is what happened yesterday."

· Stribbell is married to Doreen, and his children Timothy (13) and Rebecca (10) both attend TIS.

· The Teacher Job Fair began in 2000 and currently sees about 40 school boards from across Canada and overseas represented.

Since 2003, this well-deserved reputation for excellence, coupled with a 97 per cent employment rate upon graduation, has brought more than 40 school boards or educational organizations to the U of L to recruit teachers.

This year, the Teacher Job Fair takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 20 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall Atrium.

"We needed to provide a service to current students and recent graduates so they could interact with future employers," says Judy Lavorato, Teacher Job Fair co-ordinator.

Job Fair delegates are primarily Alberta school board representatives but in the past few years there has been an increase in the number of international agencies who wish to attend, as well as an increase in the number of private schools.

"Typically the delegates are part of the administrative and human resources team from each school board/agency," Lavorato says, adding that confirmed international delegates include representatives from Australia and the United Kingdom.

"Some employers will decide to personally interview upcoming grads who will be ready to teach within the next few months, so students can be made more aware of their options for employment," she says.

"As well, we encourage 3rd and 4th year students to attend the job fair at some point during the day to talk or interview with the delegates. It's a great experience for both employers and students to collect information about potential opportunities with each school board or agency."

"Coming to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge allowed me to be in smaller classes with professors who genuinely care about me and my progress," says Whitney Jones, who started work two months after graduating in 2009. "The practicum time is invaluable. I've literally been a teacher‚ even before graduating."

Education’s Job Fair brings employers to campus

The Faculty of Education receives countless calls from school boards looking to hire their graduates. As a result, they found a great way to deal with all the requests – Job Fair.

Now set to celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Faculty of Education Job Fair goes Jan. 20, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Atrium. A total of 35 to 40 school boards are expected, making the fair a valuable resource for both educational employers and students ready to hit the job market.

"The bottom line is that our program is so well thought of and respected, and so well known in western Canada, the school boards think of us first. The word is out there that our grads are very competent," says Judy Lavorato, program specialist with the Faculty of Education's Student Program Services (SPS) department.

Patricia Foster, also with SPS, says the U of L grad is a known commodity for employers. That is represented by statistics that say 97 per cent of Faculty of Education graduates find work in the field of education within one year of graduating.

"They know the quality of students they are receiving," says Foster. "We give them twice as much in-class training as is required by Alberta Education and that's a huge advantage when they head out into the workforce."

Prior to Job Fair, the phones would constantly be ringing as school boards enquired about the availability of grads. The idea to bring these boards on campus for a one-time recruiting and information session was born. A total of 18 boards made the trip in for the inaugural Job Fair and the U of L has accommodated up to 50 school boards in past sessions.

"Some of the boards come not to necessarily recruit but to just let students know they are out there," says Lavorato.

"Some boards would like our students to complete their final internship (PS III) in their jurisdiction and may offer incentives to stay after they have graduated. It's not uncommon for students to have a teaching position already lined up before they finish their program."

The lineup of school boards attending this year's fair is as varied and diverse as the potential teachers they will be recruiting. Truly an international fair, representatives from boards as far away as Australia will be in attendance. Of course the majority of attending school boards reside in the Prairie provinces but there are a multitude of opportunities available to adventurous grads.
Job Fair 2010 is open to the public and Student Program Services is currently looking for volunteers to help with the event.

Students in the Faculty of Education will have a valuable opportunity to network with possible future employers today as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ hosts a Teacher Job Fair in the Atrium.
