The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) announced funding through several grant programs today and three ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge projects are among those receiving awards.

The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport and Quebec Lieutenant on behalf of the Honourable Francois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced over $1.8 billion in federal research support, including $35.3 million for 577 research projects at 66 Canadian institutions through SSHRC Insight Development Grants.

Among the successful ULethbridge projects is a proposed two-year study by Drs. Kevin McGeough and Shawn Bubel (Geography & Environment) that will examine how political leaders built economies that satisfied the demands of imperial powers and maintained local loyalties in Iron Age Jordan. Located in environmentally marginal but politically strategic locations, examination of the Iron Age kingdoms of Jordan informs us not just about ancient times, but about issues related to the origins of states, their resilience and collapse.

“The proposed project has the potential to transform the way scholars think about Iron Age Kingdoms such as Edom, as well as contribute to the preservation and interpretation of Jordan’s cultural heritage,” says McGeough. “The study will provide opportunities for ULethbridge undergraduate and graduate students to be trained in field archaeological techniques and laboratory analyses.”

Dr. Anastasia Stuart-Edwards, a Dhillon School of Business professor in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations, will investigate whether mindfulness can improve teamwork, which has been known to be inefficient and result in negative employee experiences and loss of profitability. Mindfulness, a state of being present and aware of what you’re sensing and feeling without interpretation or judgment, has been shown to be beneficial for individual employees, but it’s not clear if the benefits extend to teams.

“This project draws on teamwork theories and mindfulness to examine whether team members’ mindfulness scores are related to a state of shared team mindfulness,” says Stuart-Edwards. “We’ll also be looking at how team mindfulness relates to team processes, engagement and performance.”

The third project by Drs. Christy Tu and Rhiannon Mesler, professors at the Dhillon School of Business (Calgary Campus), will explore the relationship between charitable giving and social status and how the positioning of a charitable gift to consumers can affect donations. They are proposing a series of six studies with both student and public participants.

“This research has important implications for improving charitable giving and prosocial behaviour in society,” says Tu. “In addition, our results should help equip charitable organizations and governments with tools to better communicate and raise funds from consumers for prosocial purposes.”

Along with nearly $200,000 for these research projects, ULethbridge will receive a $2.4-million grant from the Research Support Fund which supports the indirect costs of research.

From Lethbridge to Zurich

Drs. Dylan Johnson (BA ’10) and Matthew Pawlak (BA ’14) never met when they were undergraduates attending the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. But now, thanks to Dr. Kevin McGeough (BA '96), they’ve connected halfway around the world at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Zurich in Switzerland. When McGeough learned they were both at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Zurich, he made a virtual introduction. As it turns out, they’re both doing postdoctoral research in the same department, the Theologische Fakultät, but hadn’t met in person due to COVID restrictions.

“I didn't know a lot of humans in Zürich when I moved here in the middle of a pandemic, so when I heard from Kevin that Dylan was in my department, I emailed him immediately,” says Pawlak. “We met a few times already — while following Switzerland's coronavirus rules, of course. I love living abroad, especially getting to use a second language on a daily basis. But at the same time, there's always something refreshing about meeting other Canadians. Whenever I run into another member of the Lethbridge diaspora in Europe there is always reminiscence about our time at U of L, detailed comparison of Albertan breweries, and we always make time to complain about the wind in Lethbridge.”

“Thanks to Kevin McGeough realizing that two of his former students were in the same department at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Zurich, Matthew and I have become quick friends,” says Johnson. “To say I was surprised to learn he was here in Zurich is a bit of an understatement, as both the U of L and the Theological Seminar of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Zurich are not large institutions in terms of student and faculty bodies.”

The reputation of the U of L’s Faculty of Education was a drawing card for both. Pawlak grew up in Red Deer and planned to become a teacher. After a year in education, he took an elective course in biblical Hebrew with McGeough.

“Not only was Kevin’s Hebrew class excellent, it really jumpstarted my interest in language and religious studies,” says Pawlak. “I had never really considered grad school as an option, but after some encouragement from Kevin and input from friends and family, I figured I might enjoy teaching at a university rather than at a high school.”

Johnson was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan and moved to Lethbridge when he was nine. He declared a combined major in education and history but after a few history classes, he knew he wanted to become a professor. He switched his major to history and soon learned about U of L scholars teaching biblical and ancient Near Eastern studies.

“I met Kevin in his course on ancient history,” says Johnson. “His course was great, but what cemented my decision to pursue graduate work in biblical and Near Eastern studies was the archaeological field school run by Dr. Shawn Bubel at Tel Beth Shemesh in Israel. This was the defining moment in my life and career, when I knew I wanted to understand the history and culture of the people who once occupied Israel and the surrounding regions."

Their paths diverged after they completed their undergraduate studies. Johnson was admitted into the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible program at Harvard Divinity School.

“Though not widely known, the U of L has a lengthy reputation for sending students to study Hebrew Bible at Harvard — including Kevin and myself,” says Johnson.

After completing a master’s in 2012, Johnson pursued a PhD at New York ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. During that time, he spent a year at the Institute of Legal History at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Paris. After completing his doctorate in 2018, he taught Archaeology 1000 at the U of L. He was set to begin a one-year adjunct position at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of British Columbia when he received an email from a professor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Zurich recruiting him to join a research team exploring lawgiving in the Bible and the ancient Near East. He and his wife moved to Switzerland last January.

Pawlak, after teaching himself ancient Greek, switched from Hebrew Bible to early Christianity and secured a funded spot in a master’s program at McMaster ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Hamilton, Ontario. He developed an interest in the intersection of humour and religion and focused his master’s thesis on the use of sarcasm in one book of the New Testament. That became the launching point for his doctoral work at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

“The years in Cambridge were amazing; I often describe it as a bit like living in a Harry Potter book — except a lot more people speak Latin,” says Pawlak. “There were several other Canadians at my college in Cambridge, including others with U of L or Lethbridge connections. As a result, in a small corner of the UK, there was an international graduate community that —when you asked them what they knew about Canada — would mention Toronto, Vancouver but could also give you a detailed account of Lethbridge and the geography of southern Alberta.”

Pawlak’s postdoctoral position has him splitting his time between Zurich and Tübingen, Germany. He arrived in Zurich last October and will be there for 10 more months. His research involves exploring the connections between physical and verbal violence in the ancient world and how mockery functions as a tactic to dehumanize victims in torture situations.

In addition to their shared backgrounds, anyone eavesdropping on one of their conversations might hear them speak in English, German or French or see them reading texts in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Aramaic and other ancient languages.

Employing a philosophy of teaching students on their terms, Dr. Shawn Bubel (BSc ’96) has found a way to bring out the best in her students, igniting a passion for archaeology and an even broader desire for lifelong learning.

Dr. Shawn Bubel’s career path is testament to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s liberal education focus.

An archaeology professor in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Department of Geography and Environment, Bubel is the winner of the 2020 Distinguished Teaching Award. She is being honoured as part of this year’s Fall 2020 Convocation celebration.

Bubel’s career path is testament to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s liberal education focus because it was during her undergraduate years at the U of L where Bubel, initially a chemistry major, changed her degree path to explore archaeology through an individualized multidisciplinary major. Her master’s and PhD studies took her to Belgium and the experiences from which she flourished have been incorporated into her teaching today.

A believer in a well-rounded method of course delivery, Bubel employs traditional in-class techniques of lecture, assignments, papers, presentations and peer-to-peer learning, and enhances the student experience with a keen focus on experiential learning. Having lived it through her own educational journey, she understands that students who are fully immersed in the methods or material being taught embark on their own path of discovery.

The highlight of her classes are field schools at archaeological dig sites, her ultimate experiential learning opportunity. There, Bubel allows her students to fully immerse themselves in field and laboratory research. And while they learn every aspect of the archaeological experience, from the mundane to the extraordinary, they also learn about themselves.

Bubel understands her students learn in different ways and bring different sensibilities to her class, which she strives to meet by creating a safe, inclusive and supportive classroom environment. She respects and values their participation in classroom discussions and uses these opportunities to both teach her students and learn from their questions and comments.

By creating a safe place for expression, she invokes a greater understanding of the liberal arts philosophy and the multidisciplinary nature of archaeology. In the end, it enhances her ability to help students find their voice as critical thinkers who are able to problem solve, explore new ideas and push boundaries. She sees learning as a lifelong pursuit, and in addition to teaching discipline specific material, gives students the tools to navigate and succeed regardless of the career path they choose.

Bubel’s infectious enthusiasm for her craft extends to the greater community, where she frequently engages in outreach initiatives. She is equally comfortable introducing the concepts of archaeology, paleontology and geology to K-12 students as she is in a broader public forum — always eager to inspire and promote curiosity.

The Distinguished Teaching Award was established in 1987 to recognize the importance of teaching to the philosophy and goals of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Thrill of the find keeps Bubel digging

Dr. Shawn Bubel (BSc ’96) will readily admit she had an ulterior motive when she enrolled as a chemistry major for her undergraduate studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

It wasn’t as though Bubel didn’t enjoy chemistry; she was in fact very good at it, along with biology and physics. Most importantly, it had the ringing endorsement of her family and high school advisors. But Bubel knew that by coming to a liberal arts university such as the U of L, she could major in chemistry but also dabble in what she truly loved, archaeology.

Dr. Shawn Bubel revels in the opportunity to give her students the experience of uncovering the past.

“I always wanted to be an archaeologist but everyone told me that it wasn’t a real career and that I’d never get a job,” she says. “So, I started out as a chemistry major. At the end of my first year, I went to an archaeological field school in Israel and when I came back, I knew. As much as I think chemistry is very interesting, I love archaeology. Even though there wasn’t an archaeology major at the time, I did an individualized multidisciplinary major in archaeology, geography and anthropology.”

So began an academic career that has taken Bubel around the world. On Thursday, she presented the latest PUBlic Professor Series lecture at Lethbridge City Hall, Prehistoric Bison Hunters in Southern Alberta: Excavations at Fincastle Site.

Originally from Coronation, and then Fort Saskatchewan, AB, Bubel specifically chose the U of L for its liberal education focus but also because it offered the small campus experience that better suited her. Little did she know that after graduating with a BSc that she’d eventually find her way back as a faculty member following her masters and PhD studies.

“The faculty members at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge are wonderful. They are exceptionally supportive. When I was working on my PhD in Belgium, they gave me the opportunity to come back and teach here as a sessional,” she says, conducting her first summer classes in 1997 and eventually taking U of L students to Belgium on her field project in 1999 and 2000.

When a faculty spot opened up in the Department of Geography, she was hired on a term contract and before long, she applied for a tenure-track position and has been in the fold ever since.

There’s no denying Bubel’s love of archaeology and her unquenchable desire for discovery.

“When I was little, I dug up my entire backyard,” she says. “I just loved digging, anywhere, I didn’t care, just digging up the ground. I’d steal the spoons out of my mom’s cutlery drawer and I’d go outside and dig – all day long. Finally, I was cordoned off into one section of the yard and only allowed to dig there.”

Now, people call her to dig, as was the case at Fincastle. A noted kill site, the area was being looted by a local community member and the Government of Alberta was fearful that its treasures would be lost forever.

Bubel was brought in, and in 2003, her project began. Some 10 years later, more than 280,000 bone fragments were uncovered as well as one of the great oddities of her career – seven non-utilitarian upright bone features that would garner Bubel the second most viewed and shared story among Western Digs’ Top 5 Archaeology Discoveries in the American West of 2015.

She was excited to share some of that story with the PUBlic Professor crowd.

“It is really important to share our knowledge and information as broadly as we can and to include people in the community,” she says. “In archaeology, the more eyes and perspectives you have, the better the interpretation will be. I try to be as unbiased as possible, and to step away from my own preconceptions but you can’t do that completely. We are who we are. I always have First Nations students, community members and Elders on my Alberta projects because it is important to include their perspectives. We work together to try to figure out the story of the site. You can never do that completely, we don’t have a time machine, but you can certainly achieve a better interpretation of the past when more people study the information.”

She says there is great value in learning about the past.

“Archaeology reveals our stories; the things we’ve done, the challenges we’ve faced, the successes we’ve had,” she says. “If you do not understand where we’ve been, you cannot understand where we’re going. Choices are made based on who we are, and part of who we are is who we were. Archaeology offers insight into how we move forward.”

Bubel often thinks back to her first field experience and that initial opportunity as an undergraduate student to get her hands in the dirt. It helped shape her life and it is an experience she likes to pass along.

“I know how my first field experience changed my world, so I want to offer that to my students,” she says. “To be honest, there is nothing better than watching them find something for the first time. It is an incredible atmosphere and it takes me back to the thrill of uncovering something that was buried for hundreds of thousands of years. It reminds me how much I love my job. Seeing their worlds open up – not just because of the archaeology but also the cultural experiences – is very gratifying.”

While the thrill of her first great find might be in the past, the next great discovery is always out there, and if we know one thing about Bubel, she’ll keep digging.

A decade’s worth of work from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Dr. Shawn Bubel (BSc ’96) on a 2,500-year-old bison kill site proved to be one of the most interesting discoveries of 2015, according to the scientific website Western Digs.

Bubel’s discovery of non-utilitarian upright features at the ancient Fincastle Bison Kill Site was the second most viewed and shared story among Western Digs' Top 5 Archaeology Discoveries in the American West of 2015.

“It is pretty exciting. I have been directing this project since 2003 but I didn’t publish our discoveries right away because there was so much material to go through,” says Bubel, an archaeologist and faculty member in the U of L’s Department of Geography. “I wanted to get a more comprehensive understanding of the site first. To be getting the publicity now seems strange because we uncovered many of these finds several years ago.”

The Fincastle site, located amongst the sand dunes of southeastern Alberta, is remarkable for the massive amount of cultural remains present, more than 200,000 fragments of bison bone, as well as for the stories it tells and the mysteries it still holds.

Unlike many other kill sites, this is not a bison-jump site but one where sheer cunning and stalking likely allowed hunters to ambush a bison herd as it watered in marshy land tucked between sand dunes, limiting escape routes. Its finds were many, including a host of projectile points that suggest ties to the Dakota region.

Where it really gets interesting though is what was found under the layer of bone debris – seven upright bone features that were clearly constructed for a reason still unknown.

This upright features a tibia surrounded by four bison mandibles, or jawbones, with the teeth fanning out.

“We found the first one in 2004 and it was beautiful, but we didn’t think too much of it as there was no clear cultural indication of its function,” says Bubel. “When we started to find more of them and saw how they were positioned, it was obvious that these features were different than anything we had seen before.”

The uprights are deliberately arranged bones embedded in the earth. One of the most striking examples features a tibia surrounded by four bison mandibles, or jawbones, with the teeth fanning out.

“There is one other site that has something similar to it, but all we know is that they are not utilitarian,” says Bubel. “It is likely something ceremonial, but what it is exactly, no one knows. There are no stories from our Elders about these features, so it is a mystery.”

Bubel will continue to study the artifacts from Fincastle in the hopes of one day unlocking its secrets, and is thrilled to have been a part of such a significant find.

“It is definitely a rarity and not your normal discovery at an archaeological site on the plains.”

Cooper to kick off popular PUBlic Professor lecture series

Imagine defending yourself of a major crime where your fate is determined through a simple majority vote – by 1,500 or more local citizens. Such was the way of Athenian society, the world’s first democracy, and a major focus of Dr. Craig Cooper’s research portfolio.

Dr. Craig Cooper will present Catching the Crook in Classic Athens as the opening session for the now annual and extremely popular PUBlic Professor lecture series.

“Athenians espoused this idea of rule of law, that every citizen was equal before the law regardless of their social status,” says Cooper, the dean of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Faculty of Arts & Science. “There is a debate among scholars about whether Athenians, though they ideologically and rhetorically espoused the rule of law, actually upheld the notion or put it into practice.”

The PUBlic Professor initiative was introduced in 2014 as a thought-provoking series of pub-style talks that bring a range of experts and researchers from across the arts and sciences to the community for a spirited conversation.

“We are a publicly funded institution, so I think we have a responsibility to communicate with the public about what we do,” says Cooper of the PUBlic Professor series. “I think what we do is very important across the disciplines, whether it’s from the sciences or the humanities, and I think it’s important to share this with the general public.”

So popular were the talks last year, the size of the crowds necessitated a change in venue from the U of L’s Dr. Foster James Penny Building to City Hall.

Cooper, an expert in ancient Greece, ancient Greek biography and historiography, turned to study Athenian law when he was asked to fill in one semester to teach a course on Athenian Law and Society at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Winnipeg. It quickly became his favourite course to teach and a passionate area of research.

He says the workings of ancient Greek courts and the lessons learned from studying them still have relevance today.

“Looking at any society and its aspects are relevant because it helps us reflect on our own. Here was the first democracy and this is how it ran. They would not in any way consider what we do as democratic,” says Cooper. “What concerned humans 2,000 years ago and what may have led to litigation, in some ways, were the same concerns we have now, so there is that continuity of the human experience. For me, it’s also an intrinsically interesting topic.”

In total, seven talks make up the 2015/2016 PUBlic Professor series schedule. All the talks are free and open to the public, with free appetizers and bar service available. The full lineup is as follows:

Archaeological field school helps U of L students learn to dig up the past

Secrets of ancient times are gradually being revealed as Dr. Shawn Bubel, a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge archaeology professor, and her students painstakingly remove the layers of time at Israel’s Tel Beth-Shemesh during the annual summer field school.

“The field school is an international project, so not only are the students doing great archaeology and learning the skills and the foundation behind the discipline, they’re also making friends from all over the world and learning together,” says Bubel.

Each summer’s work adds another chapter to the story, yielding some answers but also posing new questions.

“It’s been over a decade now of research at the site and we’ve been finding some really interesting archaeological remains and levels,” says Bubel. “This site keeps yielding more and more interesting things that I would never have imagined would come to light.”

Tel Beth-Shemesh, situated southwest of Jerusalem, is important in a biblical context because it is the last-mentioned location of the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. Beth-Shemesh boasts a long history of occupation, from about 1800 BCE to 635 BCE in the Bronze and Iron Ages, and is a rich source of information about culture, trade and agriculture for archaeologists. Tel Beth-Shemesh also served as a converging point for the Philistines, Canaanites and the Israelites.

First excavated by archaeologists in 1911, large portions of the site were burrowed down to bedrock between 1928 and 1933 in another excavation. Many archaeologists had written Tel Beth-Shemesh off but Zvi Lederman and Shlomo Bunimovitz from Tel Aviv ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ began reinvestigating the site in 1990. Bubel worked with them in the summer of 2003 and then offered the first field school to U of L students in 2004.

Every summer since, students have unearthed all kinds of artifacts that have helped build a picture of who lived at Tel Beth-Shemesh and what happened there. Starting in 2006, Bubel and her students worked at excavating the northern edge of the site. They uncovered deposits dating back to the early Iron Age, roughly 1200 BCE.

“As we excavated lower and lower, we started to uncover this massive destruction layer with all these burnt bricks everywhere and walls toppled down. But underneath all that was pristine,” says Bubel.

They found ceramic vessels full of lentils, chickpeas, wheat and barley, all preserved through carbonization. Such items are hardly ever found because they usually decompose naturally.

“As we exposed more and more artifacts we started realizing we’ve got something incredible,” she says.

The architecture is detailed and inside one of the rooms, a sort of shelf or altar was found containing several chalices, beautifully painted bowls and fragments of two cups. Analysis of the designs on the cups showed they belonged to the Aegean world, likely Crete.

“Our colleagues determined that these cups were originally made and from the palace of Knossos. What gets even more amazing is that these two cups are the best preserved cups of their kind in the world,” she says.

At that time during the late Bronze Age, Egyptians controlled the lands. This ancient world was dotted with kingdoms and the Amarna texts, clay tablets that served largely as diplomatic letters between the kings and the pharaoh, reveal the geopolitical climate of that time. In their letters, the kings ask the pharaoh to send soldiers to help to fight off marauding bandits known as the Apiru. Archaeologists know a woman wrote two of the Amarna letters, since the writer referred to herself as handmaiden of the pharaoh, but where she lived remains a mystery.

Bubel and her students uncovered a clue among the plaque figurines they found with the Aegean cups. It shows the typical stance of a male ruler but with a female arm pose.

“Now all these things are starting to come together,” says Bubel. “Maybe we have one of the only cities of this time in this part of the world being ruled by a female. It’s extremely rare.”

Before the site could be further excavated, the areas immediately surrounding it had to be brought down to the same level to ensure safety. That work started in 2009 and reached the destruction layer last summer.

While the archaeologists thought lowering the adjacent areas wouldn’t take long, the work was slowed considerably because they uncovered an early Iron Age temple in the process. These deposits proved to be just as exciting as the ones below. Students participating in this year’s field school will finish off the Iron Age level and go on to reveal more of the destruction layer and the Late Bronze Age city below.

The field school provides students with an intense experience. They live in a kibbutz, rise at 4 a.m. and are at the work site by dawn to avoid the hottest part of the day. Work at the site continues until about 1 p.m. After lunch back at the kibbutz, students wash the pottery and other artifacts. The pottery is analyzed the same day to ensure an accurate context for the excavation. That’s followed by a lecture, dinner and an early bedtime. The students take field trips on the weekends to get a broader context of the area both geographically and chronologically.

“We want to make sure that the students learn how to excavate,” she says. “There are so many things the students get to experience that you can’t teach in the classroom. There’s no substitute for standing on top of Masada, Herod’s fortified complex, and realizing that people survived up there.”

Keys to the City

On Oct. 7, a number of notable residents of southern Alberta, including many with ties to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, received a key to the city from former Lethbridge Mayor Bob Tarleck. Friends of the U of L included The Hon. Rick Casson (former U of L employee), Senator Joyce Fairbairn (LLD '04), Gary Kirk (2004 Faculty of Management Scholarship Dinner honouree), U of L researcher Dr. Ian Whishaw (DSc '08) and Rochelle Yamagishi (BASc '71, MEd '91).

Woykin Featured at TiFF

Cameron Woykin's (BFA '03) dramatic short film Open Window was shown at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival. Open Window was selected to premiere as a part of the Short Cuts Canada programme, highlighting short films by established and emerging directors from Canada.
Since graduating from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Woykin has completed numerous short films, screening his work throughout Canada and internationally. Woykin currently resides in Toronto, where he is completing a master of fine arts in film production at York ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Solie Awarded Griffin Prize

Karen Solie (BA '93) was the Canadian winner of the prestigious 2010 Griffin Poetry Prize for her collection of poems, Pigeon. One of Canada's acclaimed young poets, Solie first launched onto the scene with Short Haul Engine (2001), a finalist for the 2002 Griffin Poetry Prize and winner of many other awards and citations.

During the summer of 2007, Darren Joblonkay (BSc '10) travelled with fellow U of L students under the direction of professor Dr. Shawn Bubel (BSc '96) to Tel Beth Shemesh, an archaeological site 20 km west of Jerusalem.

"I think the real 'aha moment' that led me to my career [in archaeology] was attending the field school at Tel Beth Shemesh," says Joblonkay.

Since then, Joblonkay has spent every summer working at archaeological digs around Israel. Joblonkay is now pursuing a master's degree in Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto. In the summer of 2011, he will be digging at Tell Tayinat in Turkey, which he hopes will lead to his dissertation.

"I would like to eventually be a professor in Near Eastern Archaeology. I believe it was one of my mentors who told me once that 'any archaeologist would be lying if they said they didn't like digging up treasures,' but our discipline runs deeper than that," he says. "We attempt to preserve and understand humanity's cultural history. We are all captivated by what humans were able to achieve in the past."

Dow Finds Early Career Success

After graduation, Jazlyn Dow (BFA '10) worked on the millinery team for the Albert Ballet show Love Lies Bleeding, a contemporary ballet set to classic songs composed by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Dow is now on a 10-month contract with the Canadian Opera Company as a wardrobe co-ordinator.

"This chandelier headdress for the Love Lies Bleeding production was so enormous that we had to build a separate crate just for it to travel," explains Dow.

Alumni Troupe Hit the Fringe

Happy Whackin' Jim McCrackin, directed by Brent Felzien (BFA '06) and Neil LeGrandeur (BFA '06) and written by Amos Altman (BA '04, BFA '05), tells the comedic story of a veteran hit man who engages in some soul-searching while attempting to complete his last job.

Presented at the 2010 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, it received top reviews from the Edmonton Journal and SEE Magazine. The production featured William Banfield (BFA '06), Amanda Blair (BFA '08), Cliff Kelly (BFA '07) and Kimberlee Stadelmann (BFA '06) as stage manager.

Suriano Looks to Engage an Online Generation

Jason Suriano (BA '01) is using gaming as a means to enlighten a new generation of kids about science, history and technology. Recently, he launched Seek Your Own Proof, a new online game at Discoverykids.com. The game targets six to 12 year-olds and follows the story of three investigative siblings who discover a secret underground agency known as the Central Institute for Exploration (CIE).

The teens are quickly drawn into a chase through time and history against enemy agents who are plotting to rewrite the past, change the present and alter the future. Online users can play the game in traditional form but also have the option of taking field missions to real museums. The debut field mission involved facts around the King Tut exhibit at the Discovery Times Square Exposition in New York, N.Y. Other mission locations include the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton and the Galt Museum in Lethbridge.

Ralph Dilworth BASc '74, BEd '85, MEd '92

Dilworth, a teacher-librarian at Western Canada High School in Calgary, was featured in a Calgary Herald article called: Librarians We Love. Originally from Camrose, Alta., Dilworth is a former diplomat who, after graduating from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, went on to work with the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ottawa and then at embassies in Poland, France and Yaounde, Cameroon; he speaks English, French, Spanish and Polish. Before becoming a teacher-librarian, he served as a teacher and writer of textbooks including a Social Studies 30 classic, written in French and used regularly in classrooms for a decade until it was recently updated. If stranded on a desert island, Dilworth cited The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky as his book of choice.

Michael Granzow BA '06, MA '10

John and Michael, sons of the late Carl Granzow, both received their master's degrees at the 2010 Fall Convocation ceremony. John is currently pursuing a PhD at Stanford ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and Michael is now living in Montreal. Their sisters, Andrea Klassen (BA '97, BEd '01) and Kara Granzow (BA '99), are ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduates as well.

Aaron Barr BFA '02

Barr was a character surfacer for the newly released 3D movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. Among numerous other projects, he also worked on the movies The Ant Bully and The Wild. Barr currently works as a surfacer/modeller at Image Engine Design Inc. in Vancouver, B.C.

"Lisa and I just got married on Sept. 25, 2010. Although we did not meet at the
U of L, we were both friends with people at the U of L who knew each other. Small world!"

"I recently accepted a media planning supervisor position at PHD, one of Canada's leading media and communications agencies. I will be overseeing media plans for Scotiabank. In January I was nominated for the 2010 Media Planner of the Year."

"I am currently working for MIX 97.7 FM in Calgary. I previously worked at the Calgary Herald."

Michael Macintyre BA '06

Macintyre was recently installed as the new pastor for St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Spruce Grove, Alta. After graduation from the U of L, Macintyre moved to Saskatoon to attend Lutheran Theological Seminary. While at Seminary, he spent three weeks in Peru as a part of a cross-cultural experience. In April 2010, he graduated with a master of divinity degree.

Cyndy Packard BMgt '07

Packard passed the Chartered Accountants Uniform Evaluation (UFE) in 2009. She previously worked at KPMG in Lethbridge from September 2006 to May 2009. She is currently a manager at Quon & Associates in Calgary.
