U of L names its first Equity, Diversity and Inclusion scholars

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is proud to announce the first recipients of its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Scholars program, Drs. Glenda Bonifacio, Sandra Dixon and Roy Golsteyn (BASc (BSc) '84).

The program was established in 2021 and is designed to acknowledge and support individuals involved in EDI work at the scholarly level. The scholars will be engaging in projects that advance the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s EDI priorities and, when completed, share the information with the broader campus community.

“We are so pleased to recognize these exceptional scholars and assist them in their EDI work,” says Martha Mathurin-Moe, the U of L’s EDI executive director. “The projects they will undertake demonstrate a breadth of EDI work that will benefit the entire campus community.”

Bonifacio (women and gender studies) plans to examine equity in international graduate students’ education and training at the U of L. She will analyze current policies, practices and training to determine the gaps that may exist for international graduate students from different faculties. In addition, her project will explore the outcomes of these gaps in policy and practice and recommend strategies to create a more integrated equity framework for international graduate students.

“Equity in international graduate education and training at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is a critical point of enquiry as a comprehensive university,” says Bonifacio. “I seek to examine equity towards international graduate students as a thrust in governance, administration, support and programming. In addition, I will explore gaps in policy and practice across faculties, perceived outcomes through student consultations and create a pilot EDI training module. I will also offer recommendations for a more integrated equity framework.”

Dixon’s (education) project is designed to support the presence of new voices on campus and beyond and to link the U of L’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion within academic work of all kinds.

“As an EDI scholar, the project I am undertaking aims to shed light on the lived experiences of women in the academy who self-identify as Black, Indigenous and Women of Colour (BIWOC),” says Dixon. “Given our current national and international socio-political milieu, I strongly believe this work is warranted and timely. This award will afford me the opportunity to create a culturally safe space for racialized women — who are often silenced, dismissed, excluded, underrepresented, misrepresented, and/or misunderstood in the academic discourse — to share their stories.”

Golsteyn’s (biological sciences) project, called EDI Pharm, will help students connect scientific and

traditional knowledge into their view of nature. His goals include formalizing a research program for Indigenous students that uses Blackfoot plant names and standard scientific approaches in equal measure. He also plans to build awareness of the program by reaching out to youth in southern Alberta.

“Through our research on the chemicals from plants in the Prairie to Pharmacy Program, we have learned that our classical scientific approach provides an incomplete view,” says Golsteyn. “There are other ways to view our natural world that cannot be taken; they must be offered, earned and shared. My research laboratory embraces this approach of investigating nature and I’m working to ensure it’s sustainable and accessible to all U of L students.”

U of L social scientists net SSHRC awards worth nearly $440,000

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduate students and faculty members will tackle a variety of research projects thanks to funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

“The U of L’s success rate with Insight Development Grants was very positive, higher than the national average and continues our momentum,” says Dr. Erasmus Okine, vice-president (research). “Our social scientists and humanities researchers are conducting leading-edge research and I heartily commend them for their efforts.”

U of L researchers received six Insight Development Grants. Dr. Robert LeBlanc (education) will examine how immigrant teens in a rural Alberta meatpacking town learn the forms and meanings of stylized speech. Dr. Glenda Bonifacio (women & gender studies) will study how the election of Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines has affected foreign disaster aid and gender equality following Haiyan, the 2013 super typhoon. Dr. Rhiannon MacDonnell Mesler (Dhillon School of Business, Calgary campus) will look at how consumer identities can divide and unite in an increasingly polarized world. Dr. Paige Pope (kinesiology & physical education) will compare the effectiveness of various messages designed to reduce sedentary behaviour in older adults.

Other researchers receiving Insight Development Grants include Drs. Fangfang Li (psychology) and Noëlle Gunst-Leca (psychology). As well, Dr. Inge Genee (modern languages), co-applicant on a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta-based project called 21st century tools for Indigenous languages, received a Partnership Grant.

Dr. Carly Adams, a Board of Governors Research Chair (Tier II) and a kinesiology & physical education professor, and Dr. Darren Aoki (BA ’90), a professor in world history at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Plymouth and adjunct professor in history at the U of L, received an Insight Grant for their Transforming Canadian Nikkei oral history project. This grant allows them to continue exploring the cultural and social history of Canadian Nikkei (people of Japanese descent) in southern Alberta from 1950 to the 21st century in partnership with the Galt Museum & Archives, Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden and the Nikkei Cultural Society of Lethbridge and Area.

Along with the faculty members who received awards, several U of L graduate students received SSHRC funding, including master’s students Jennifer Chernishenko, Margaret Ingram, Quinn Johnsson, Mary Siever, Michelle Sylvestre and Jaisie Walker and doctoral student Serena Visser.

Chernishenko will delve into how girls’ mindsets—whether growth oriented or fixed— affects their sense of belonging and participation in sports. Siever is studying the reasons why parenting and mothering, in particular, receive minimal support in post-secondary study. Sylvestre will examine how social issues and context get transferred into the medical world and how that’s connected to today’s consumption of pharmaceuticals. Visser will explore the impact institutional norms and practices within the mental health system have for trans and gender-diverse people.

Bonifacio book focuses on immigrants' experiences in small cities

A new book co-edited by Dr. Glenda Tibe Bonifacio digs into immigration and immigrants’ experiences in small cities in Canada.

Canadian Perspectives on Immigration in Small Cities is a collection of essays by scholars who study immigration in smaller communities across the country. The idea grew out of a workshop Bonifacio organized for the National Metropolis Conference held five years ago. Bonifacio, a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge professor in Women and Gender Studies, and Dr. Julie Drolet, a professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary who co-edited the book with Bonifacio, put out a call for papers. The essays they received in response eventually became the 14 chapters of the book.

Bonifacio says the work being done for immigrants in Lethbridge has been very positive.

The book provides a pan-Canadian, multi-disciplinary perspective on the realities of immigration to cities with a population of less than 100,000. Bonifacio wrote about Filipina immigrants to Lethbridge, acknowledging the role that Lethbridge Family Services - Immigrant Services plays. Another author wrote about youth perspectives in the Niagara region and another looked at the role of social networks in attracting and retaining immigrants. The book is divided into themes that explore how immigrants to small cities find ways to belong and the community programs offered.

“Programs vary because of the level of receptivity and involvement of the various stakeholders in each community, for example, business, local government and service providers,” says Bonifacio.

Immigration is a federal responsibility but service delivery occurs in the community and the degree of collaboration between the federal, provincial and local governments can affect the type of programming offered.

“This book highlights some of those examples where you have the resources, the resilience and the different kinds of programs in small cities at the time of writing,” she says. “Through this edited collection we’re able to showcase the diversity of responses toward immigration.”

By touching on topics like acceptance, resistance and discrimination, Bonifacio says the book makes the point that smaller cities provide a good lens to look at the level of integration of immigrants. The lack of connections between organizations is often more visible and the solutions found in smaller cities can often be applied in big cities.

“There is nothing to fear from newcomers or immigrants coming to small cities or smaller areas,” says Bonifacio. “The lesson learned from the small-city project is that small cities count. Lethbridge is an example of a small city doing good in immigration.”

The book took several years to come to fruition. When it was in the final round of editing, Bonifacio learned one of the authors, Dr. Ottilia Chareka, a professor in the Faculty of Education at St. Francis Xavier ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and mother of five girls, had died tragically.

“We were emotionally devastated. After some time, we decided to continue and put some annotations in her work,” says Bonifacio. “We dedicated the book to her and all of the proceeds will go the fund for Ottilia Chareka’s children.”

Despite the delay, the remaining authors all remained committed to the book project and it was recently published. Bonifacio will launch the book on March 8, International Women’s Day, at the Dr. Foster James Penny Building, located at 324 5 St. S., from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Students get challenging but amazing learning experience in the Philippines

What usually takes hours to describe in a classroom came instantly alive for the 14 students who signed up for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s first ever Philippine Field Study course.

Offered through the Department of Women and Gender Studies, Dr. Glenda Bonifacio wanted her students to learn about global citizenship from a gender perspective. In Tacloban, where Bonifacio is from, the students saw how global forces affect people’s livelihoods, the environment and society in general. They also learned a little about the convoluted Filipino political system.

Typhoon Yolanda ripped through Tacloban on Nov. 8, 2013, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall that caused floods, landslides and destruction. Thousands of people lost their lives.

The students, who received financial assistance through the Campus Alberta Grant for International Learning, saw the devastation left by Yolanda and the rebuilding efforts now underway during their month-long stay. As part of their course work, they listened to lectures from local government officials, Filipino scholars and representatives of non-government organizations. They visited the sites of mass graves, toured areas not yet rebuilt and a women’s weaving co-operative. One day while riding on a form of public transport called a jeepney, they spoke to a woman who told them she had lost 16 members of her family during the storm.

“I feel ‘I’m sorry’ isn’t the right thing to say because it’s so much more than that,” says Cassandra Travis-Bobey, a student who participated in the field course.

“I was preparing myself for this physical devastation where things were not completely rebuilt,” says Jasmine Saler, another student on the trip. “I don’t think I was prepared at all for the emotional devastation that, I feel, still hadn’t really been dealt with.”

She says the need for relief in the form of food, water, medical treatment and shelter is the first concern after a natural disaster but she became convinced that relief for the emotional consequences of such massive loss of life and destruction should also be part of the response.

After Yolanda, relief poured in from around the world but it often didn’t reach those who needed it most. As it can happen after a major natural disaster in any country, political corruption hampered the delivery of aid.

These homes, occupied by squatters, were rebuilt in an area along the coastline which had been destroyed by Typhoon Yolanda.

“One of the professors who spoke to us summed it up brilliantly. He said that Super Typhoon Yolanda was a natural disaster followed by a political tragedy followed by a communication disaster,” says Saler. “The politics that played into how relief aid was distributed was horrifying. The storm knocked out their communications system and for three days they did not hear anything from anybody. That’s just the beginning of this long list of atrocities and, I would say, massive human rights violations, that occurred in the process of supplying relief aid and rebuilding in the area.”

While the country is still recovering from Yolanda, larger forces are also at work in the Philippines, says Travis-Bobey. As part of her course work, she looked at the effects of having multi-national companies as part of the Filipino economy. The companies secure large tracts of land for growing pineapple and bananas and employ locals to work in the fields. The best of the crop is reserved for export while local markets get second-rate fruit to sell. And the Filipino people are doubly affected because the extreme weather associated with climate change causes crop losses and loss of income.

Saler found global influences in local advertising. She noticed the models featured in media ads had a mestizo skin tone and that Western beauty ideals, such as white skin, long hair, and eye makeup for women, were often incorporated. The ‘Got Milk’ slogan used in North America to promote the consumption of milk was used in the Philippines to market a skin-whitening product.

The students also saw discrepancies between the information government organizations delivered and the reality on the streets when they toured various areas. Officials often stuck to the message that rebuilding is progressing while students saw how much remains to be done. Some rebuilding projects are at a standstill due to lack of funds and other ruined buildings haven’t been touched. Many areas don’t have proper waste management or basic services like running water.

“Even though we were only there for a month, I still feel emotional about it. I can’t imagine having to live that reality every day, of the devastation you felt and the rebuilding that needs to be done,” says Travis-Bobey.

“Instead of being this myth of progress, it might actually be a coping mechanism. You’re faced with so much devastation and things aren’t progressing well and you’re trying to deal with the personal consequences of the storm, but if you can say things are moving well and getting organized, it helps you move through that,” says Saler.

While many of their experiences were overwhelming, the students describe their professor as “amazing” and “phenomenal.” They also appreciated being welcomed into the homes of Bonifacio’s in-laws for food and karaoke.

Despite the weight of the situations they encountered, they would recommend the experience to anyone else considering going.

“If you go, be prepared to open yourself up and then you’ll be amazed,” says Travis-Bobey. “It affected and changed who I am.”

“Expect it to be immensely challenging and a very intense 30 days,” says Saler.

Excitement builds as students prepare for Philippine field study

A few days before their scheduled departure to Tacloban City, Philippines, the 14 students in Dr. Glenda Bonifacio’s field course are bubbling with anticipation.

They are excited to meet the people, experience the culture, eat the food and soak up as many experiences as they can while they are there. While reading about the country can give them a foundation, they can’t wait to see it for themselves.

The field course is a first for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Women and Gender Studies department and is designed to develop global citizenship from a gender perspective. As far as Bonifacio knows, this will be the first field course to visit the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of the Philippines’ campus in Tacloban. While there, the group will be staying in student dormitories.

“The students will be there experiencing the life of an ordinary student. There is no hot or cold shower, there’s no air-conditioning. So they will be there as student scholars, not as tourists,” says Bonifacio. “I told them they are the pioneers who are doing it for the first time so the pioneers work very hard to pave the way for the next group.”

Bonifacio has imparted some history about her homeland and prepared the students for the conditions they will encounter. Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda hit Tacloban City hard when it made landfall in November 2013. Thousands of people were killed and homes and infrastructure were destroyed. Rebuilding is ongoing.

The students are trying to prepare themselves as much as possible for what they will encounter. However, the reality on the ground will still be a surprise, says one student who expects to be inspired at how people have persevered and worked together to help each other.

Students will be immersed in local life during their stay. They will visit non-government organizations working in the area, evacuation centres and women’s co-operatives, attend community festivals, meet with representatives of different government agencies and attend lectures by Filipino scholars, practitioners and local officials.

Because of the diversity of their majors, including sociology, psychology, fine arts, women and gender studies, neuroscience, education, math, community health, management, environmental science and Native American Studies, the students will bring a variety of perspectives to their experiences.

They will be able to see the effects of globalization, of colonization, of gender roles, and how the music and art communities are helping people rebuild after the typhoon.

The students, who received the Campus Alberta Grant for International Learning (CAGFIL) for this trip, depart June 20 and return July 20.

A group of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students will have the learning opportunity of a lifetime this summer as they trade the classroom for the streets of Tacloban City, Philippines.

“Instead of sitting in the classroom, they will get lectures in the field,” says Dr. Glenda Bonifacio, the U of L professor in the Department of Women and Gender Studies teaching the course and a former resident of Tacloban City.

During their month-long stay beginning June 20, 10 students will visit non-government organizations working in the area, evacuation centres and women’s co-operatives, attend community festivals, meet with representatives from different government agencies and hear on-site lectures by Filipino scholars, practitioners and local officials.

While much has been rebuilt in Tacloban City, the landscape still bears the scars of Typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines in November 2013, killing thousands of people and destroying homes and infrastructure.

“It will be the first field course for women and gender studies and the first one to the Philippines,” says Bonifacio. “They’re going there to immerse in the society, in the community. In the end, the goal is to develop global citizenship from a gender perspective.”

The Philippines is still considered a developing country, although the literacy rate is about 95 per cent. In 2013, the island country placed in the top 10 in the world for gender parity while Canada was in 20th place. Bonifacio says the field course will give students the chance to understand and analyze how local and global forces manifest in the lives of people by looking at geography, environment, society, culture and economics.

“I was very excited because I love travelling and I’ve been on school trips before that have taken me to different places that I wouldn’t have visited on my own,” says Jasmine Saler, a fourth-year U of L student majoring in kinesiology and women and gender studies. “To go with someone who has lived there, who knows the languages, who has connections there, that’s the perfect way to travel.”

Saler is also looking forward to learning a different way of living in the context of recovering from a natural disaster.

“I can’t imagine ever having that opportunity again,” she says. “I am most eager to see the festivals and the vibrancy of the culture. Understanding the connection between peoples is also what I’m really excited to learn about.”

Christina MacDonald, a third-year U of L general social science student from the Onion Lake Cree Nation, which straddles the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary, applied for the field course in keeping with her parents’ teaching to take any opportunity to travel. Not having travelled outside of Canada before, she admits the prospect of a month in the Philippines is rather frightening.

“I’m really scared but I always learn something amazing from that fear,” she says. “I’m always interested in how other people live. We’re all human beings at the end of the day but we have these intersectionalities, such as gender, race and class, which we have to deal with every single day. To actually experience the intersectionalities that other people face firsthand will allow me to understand it better.”

Even though students have expressed interest in most of the spots, Bonifacio encourages other students who’d like to attend to put their names on a wait list. With five months yet to go, she says openings may occur and students on the wait list will have priority.

In addition to paying tuition for the six-credit course, students have to cover the cost of their flight, housing, accommodation and meals. They’ve received $750 each from the Campus Alberta Grant for International Learning but with the cost of a flight nearing the $2,000 mark, the students hope to raise more money through fundraising initiatives. McDaniel study seeks to understand supply and demand of migrant care workers

A ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researcher is exploring whether the reliance of migrant care workers in immigrant-receiving countries like Canada, Japan, the United States and South Korea, is driven by global and regional income inequalities.

The U of L’s Dr. Susan McDaniel, as part of a $2.85 million Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Grant on Gender, Migration and the Work of Care, centered at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto, is leading a team of researchers that is exploring the demographic, economic and policy factors that affect the global supply and demand of migrant care workers, as well as the “care deficits” that result from this migration of women out of countries in East Asia.

Dr. Susan McDaniel will lead one of eight teams involved in this national research project.

“We are interested in the supply and demand of care,” explains Dr. McDaniel, Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Global Population and Life Course, as well as Prentice Research Chair in Global Population and Economy. “We’re looking at income inequalities in various countries and what that means for the potential supply of caregivers, because there are an increasing number of people at the bottom end of the income distribution.”

In countries in the Asia Pacific region, that traditionally supply immigrant or temporary-workers, governments have been encouraging the out-migration of care workers. Economic globalization and neoliberal economic policies have increased unemployment and underemployment, encouraging some care workers to migrate for work.

“The question that we’re asking is, how does the demographic and economic structure of the various countries play into the supply and demand for care? The standard line is that when you have an aging population, you’re going to have a greater demand for care and therefore more care workers,” says McDaniel. “But we suspect that may not be the case, that it may not be demand that is creating care migration. In a country like Japan, which has a very elderly population, there’s not a huge demand for caregivers because family care is still a priority. So there’s not an automatic relationship.”

McDaniel’s team is one of eight groups of researchers involved with the project. The teams are comprised of top academic researchers partnering with international institutes, policy-makers and labour and advocacy organizations.

The project headed by McDaniel will benefit from her affiliation with the U of L’s Prentice Institute, her Canada Research Chair program, partnerships Employment and Social Development Canada as well as the SSHRC-funded Strategic Cluster in Population Change and Life Course.

McDaniel’s team includes the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Dr. Glenda Bonifacio (Women and Gender Studies) and other researchers from across Canada and southern Asia as well as several graduate students and post-doctoral fellows associated with the Prentice Institute.

Vice-President (Research) Dr. Dan Weeks says he is not surprised that U of L researchers have been included in this important project, saying the capacity that exists at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for this type of research is significant and growing.

“The Prentice Institute and its researchers are sought after because of the relevance and breadth of their expertise. The knowledge that will be gained by McDaniel and her team will have lasting value for global communities,” says Weeks.

The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy, a multi-disciplinary, cross-faculty institute dedicated to researching the long-term global impacts of demographic, economic and social issues related to changes in the world population patterns. The Institute was launched in 2009. The Prentice Institute collaborates with researchers in Canada and elsewhere to address some of the most difficult challenges of the next generation and beyond.

The study will continue over a five-year period. McDaniel will present initial findings as a keynote speaker at a conference on Transnational Aging at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Southern California in January 2014.

IRDF - Investigating the effectiveness of social programs

Established by the Vice-President Research, the Interdisciplinary Research Development Fund (IRDF) is a one-time non-renewable research fund that will provide the foundation for developing the next generation of interdisciplinary concentrations of research excellence at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. The General Faculties Council Research Committee reviewed applications for IRDF funding and three proposals received support (up to $100,000 each over two years). This is one of three projects funded in 2012.

The title of their project might be long, but five ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers are hoping their work leads to more concise ways in which disadvantaged groups, in particular women, can benefit from having input into, and influence over, social programs designed to assist them.

The research team, comprised of Dr. Carol Williams and Dr. Glenda Bonifacio of the department of Women and Gender Studies, Dr. Patrick Wilson of the Department of Anthropology, Dr. Bonnie Lee of the Faculty of Health Sciences (addictions counselling) and Linda Many Guns of the department of Native American Studies recently received nearly $100,000 from the U of L Interdisciplinary Research Development Fund (IRDF) to explore a project entitled Creative Appropriations: Identities, Communities, and Development in Cross-Cultural and Interdisciplinary Perspectives.

Simply put, the researchers are looking at how their target groups have been constructed by the state, appropriate the policies and programs directed at them by government or social agencies and how their particular cultural and lived experiences challenge these constructions to demonstrate alternative models of civic engagement.

The project, suggests Lee, "may shed light on how government policies and non-government organizations (NGOs) can be better positioned to promote more inclusive and vibrant communities."

"This multi-faceted research project will allow us to better understand the possible implications of state and NGO programs for minority populations, and may help us to question the cultural and ideological impulses driving the design of certain projects," says Williams.

Wilson notes the results may, "allow us to see the ways in which minority women, in this case, navigate sometimes hostile policy environments and therefore our results may allow for better design and planning of those policies and programs themselves. Better yet, it may encourage a shift in the control of a project's design and implementation back to local communities and stakeholders."

The local communities and stakeholders aren't just from one particular group. The researchers will be talking with indigenous women involved in food sovereignty projects in Ecuador, women and women's organizations in First Nations communities in Canada and the United States and racialized immigrant women in Canada.

Very little comparative scholarship on the circumstances of racialized immigrant and indigenous women currently exists.

Through a combination of research methods, they hope to gain a clearer picture of some of the challenges or barriers women face in developing cultural or other programming, how they worked creatively to overcome them and how they engaged in 'creative appropriation' to make projects work better.

"An agency might give a group funds, or design a social program for one specific purpose," says Williams.

The group, in turn, might use the money for that stated purpose, or creatively expand the bounds of the agency's funding or program parameters. Williams says that sometimes those groups who work creatively to help their constituents can find themselves 'de-funded' if they stray too far from the stated plan set out by the group or governing organization overseeing the project.

"We are hoping to collect information which can contribute to a new way of policy-making for organizations that allows for, as we're calling it, the 'creative appropriation' of a program design or funding process to make it their own, and possibly more effective."
