Professor Mary Kavanagh elected to the Royal Society of Canada

Recognized as an artist and scholar of exceptional caliber and an expert in interdisciplinary art practice, Professor Mary Kavanagh is being honoured for contributions to her field by being elected a Fellow to the Royal Society of Canada, Academy of Arts and Humanities.

Kavanagh’s artistic contributions are extensive and critically significant.

Kavanagh is a Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair and Chair of the Department of Art in the Faculty of Fine Arts. She joined the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 2000 having earned degrees in art studio and art history from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Guelph, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Western Ontario, and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan. Since that time, Kavanagh has advanced a prodigious research agenda, consistently confronting existential issues with a material engagement that is conceptually and visually exacting, while establishing a distinguished record of leadership in her field of expertise.

“This recognition is only possible because of the active and generous support of peers, colleagues and students over many years,” says Kavanagh. “I have tremendous gratitude for all those who have valued and celebrated my work and efforts throughout my career. It’s an honour to be invited into fellowship with the RSC.”

Deftly weaving artistic and scholarly methods, Kavanagh’s examination of the material evidence of war, industry, and weaponized landscapes has been supported by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Projects in Canada, Japan, Italy and the United States (Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Alaska) illustrate the universality and global reach of Kavanagh's work, which is of further relevance to current scholarship in nuclear culture and post-atomic studies. Through exhibitions, lectures and publications, she makes visible the entanglement of public and private realms and the encoding of political conflict on the body, translated through inventive forms of artistic presentation and public dissemination.

Kavanagh’s artistic contributions are extensive and critically significant. In the last 25 years, her videography, photographic work, drawings, archives and installations have been presented in over three peer-reviewed, solo or thematic group exhibitions per year, a remarkable pace of exhibition, and a solid indication of her abiding commitment to her work. Her impressive list of exhibitions in prestigious institutions, participation in numerous international residencies, and frequent contributions to public debate and civic engagement, illustrate the lasting impact of her work.

Professor Mary Kavanagh’s election will be formally recognized at the Royal Society of Canada’s meeting at McGill ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in November.

Artist Mary Kavanagh examines atomic legacies

Aligning with the 75th Anniversary of the birth of the atomic age, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge professor Mary Kavanagh explores the bomb and its legacies in a series of art exhibitions presented across Canada and the US: the multi-faceted Daughters of Uranium and Trinity³, a two-channel video work extracted from the larger project. The exhibitions reach across the nuclear Anthropocene to build connections between nuclear technologies and their lived effects, the nuclear site and irradiated bodies, nuclear fallout, waste, and material evidence.

Trinity Site in New Mexico anchors the exhibitions. Conducted under the auspices of the Manhattan Project, the Trinity test took place on July 16, 1945 deep in the desert. The purpose of the test was to explode an atomic device to prove the viability of the bombs that were used in attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki three weeks later. Situated on an active military range, today the Trinity Site is open to the public during bi-annual open houses that attract thousands of visitors each year.

“I was not prepared for the thousands of people that came through on this one day,” says Kavanagh about her first visit in 2012. “So that piqued my interest, raised the questions: who are all these people and why do they come? Which then became the essential questions in my applications for funding.”

In addition to receiving grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, in 2017 Kavanagh was awarded an Insight Research/Creation Grant from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Her project Atomic Tourist: Trinity received nearly $150,000 over four years to support fieldwork, mentor graduate students, and access the equipment and infrastructure needed to conduct the research. She has returned each year since to interview visitors about their personal connection to the Bomb, amassing a living archive of beliefs and viewpoints about this shared history.

The first scholar at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge to receive a SSHRC Insight Research/Creation grant, Kavanagh’s research straddles the academic and art worlds.

“Interpreting historical, political and cultural dimensions of the nuclear age is a challenge for any artist,” shares Kavanagh. “It’s important not to lose sight of an essential, visceral experience and expression while addressing complex issues in material form.”

Kavanagh’s exhibitions include multi-screen video projections, photography, drawing, artifacts, and a provocative series of sculptures using light, glass, and lead.

Originating at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge and travelling to the Founders’ Gallery, The Military Museums, Calgary, and the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Daughters of Uranium has an accompanying exhibition catalogue with essays by Peter C. van Wyck, cultural theorist, Concordia ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Montreal; Jayne Wilkinson, Editor-in-Chief, Canadian Art, Toronto; as well as curatorial essays by Christina Cuthbertson and Lindsey Sharman. The publication is scheduled for launch in mid-October 2020 and will be available for purchase through the partner galleries . Kavanagh’s works are currently on display in a large online group exhibition Trinity: Reflections on the Bomb at the Albuquerque Museum in New Mexico. A portfolio of her work is included in an anthology edited by John O’Brian and Claudette Lauzon, Through Post-Atomic Eyes, published by McGill-Queens ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Press, due for released September 2020.

Anniversaries provide opportunities to recall or critique, and on the 75th anniversary of the Trinity atomic bomb test, which unleashed new orders of destructive capability, Kavanagh has created the conditions for discussion and reflection, not just of the past, but of the continuing impact into the future. Recently awarded a Board of Governors Research Chair, Tier I in Fine Arts (2020-2025), Kavanagh looks forward to continuing this ambitious research program while instructing and mentoring the next generation of artists and scholars.

Six diverse scholars will begin their appointments as Board of Governors Research Chairs, highlighting their exceptional work and impacts on their chosen fields of study.

“I am very pleased these individuals are being recognized as the outstanding scholars that they are,” says Dr. Robert Wood, interim vice-president (research). “They reflect the exceptional quality of research being done across the academic disciplines at the U of L and their important work enhances our reputation as one of Canada’s most influential research institutions.”

Dr. Debra Basil, a professor in the Dhillon School of Business, will begin a five-year term as a Tier I Research Chair in Marketing and Management. Her research examines social responsibility with marketing and management, with a focus on the nexus of non-profit and for-profit organizations. She has held several major external grants and her works have been presented in numerous national and international journals and conferences. She is currently completing a book titled Social Marketing in Action: Cases from Around the World.

Also appointed at the Tier I level is Dr. Chris Hopkinson, a professor in the Department of Geography & Environment. He will be the Research Chair in Terrestrial Ecosystem Remote Sensing. Hopkinson founded the ARTeMIS Lab for ecosystem change in 2013, when he joined the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge after working as an Environmental Research Scientist with the Australian Government. With a background in engineering and geography, Hopkinson integrates hydro-meteorological, remote sensing, spatial and temporal data sources to better understand multi-dimensional natural resource and ecosystem process dynamics in cold region environments.

Mary Kavanagh begins a five-year term as a Tier I Research Chair in Fine Arts. Kavanagh is a visual artist and professor in the Department of Art, where she teaches drawing, interdisciplinary studio, spatial art practice and critical theory. For more than 20 years, her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Canada and abroad, and she has consistently contributed to academic forums including publishing, lecturing, conference publications and adjudicating.

Beginning a four-year appointment as a Tier II Research Chair in Addiction is Dr. Darren Christensen, an associate professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences. He researches the etiology, prevention, and treatment of addiction. His research includes developing behavioural treatments for problem gambling, evaluations of the effectiveness of harm minimization measures, and an investigation of regular opioid antagonist dosing on gambling urge and brain function.

Dr. Richard Larouche, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Public Health Program, has been appointed a Tier II Research Chair in Children’s Physical Activity for a four-year term. He joined the Faculty in 2017 after a postdoctoral fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute. His research program revolves around physical activity among children and youth, with special interest in different types of physical activity such as active transportation (e.g., walking and cycling to and from places) and outdoor play. Larouche published his first book in 2018 with Elsevier entitled, Children’s Active Transportation.

Also at the Tier II level, Dr. Jenny McCune has been appointed as Board of Governors Research Chair in Plant Conservation for four years. McCune, a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences, completed her undergraduate degree at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Guelph and graduate degrees at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Kent in the United Kingdom and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of British Columbia. Between degrees, she worked as a professional ecologist for an environmental NGO in California and as a biologist for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Prior to joining the U of L, she held a Liber Ero fellowship, which supported her work in the conservation of rare plants in Canada.

Research project examines atomic tourism at site of the world’s first atomic bomb blast

A visit to New Mexico and the test site of the first atomic blast led Mary Kavanagh, a professor in the Department of Art at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, on a new multi-year project that explores atomic tourism in the context of the emergent nuclear Anthropocene.

Her project recently received nearly $150,000 over four years from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the first Insight Research/Creation Grant awarded to a faculty member at the U of L.

“Since the end of the Cold War, atomic tourism has been on the rise, with millions of visitors each year travelling to significant sites of atomic history, industry and accident,” says Kavanagh. “My project, Atomic Tourist: Trinity, explores nuclear anxiety in the post-Cold War era through a series of interviews with visitors to the site of the world’s first atomic bomb detonation.”

Under the auspices of the Manhattan Project, a secret wartime consortium led by the United States with the support of Britain and Canada, the development and use of atomic weapons presented new orders of destructive capability. Codenamed "Trinity," the test took place deep in the desert on July 16, 1945, south of the Manhattan project's headquarters in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Every living thing within a mile of the blast was obliterated. A rehearsal for the bombing of Hiroshima three weeks later, and Nagasaki three days after that, today the significance of Trinity site as a marker for the birth of the atomic age is widely acknowledged socially, culturally, and psychologically.

Kavanagh has been making annual trips to Trinity, New Mexico, since 2012. Building upon interviews gathered during a highly successful pilot study, Kavanagh will continue to gather participant testimonials from a broad spectrum of tourists during bi-annual Trinity Open Houses.

"This audio/visual material will provide a spatial-temporal archive, consisting of an accumulation of voices, perspectives and experiences all addressing the unique meaning of Trinity site," says Kavanagh.

She anticipates the results of her study will have implications for scholars in the humanities and social sciences, or for anyone engaged in post-atomic studies, especially as the Trinity test nears its 75th Anniversary (2020) and interest in the subject ramps up.

Interview participants have offered a variety of motivations for visiting the test site, ranging from the deeply personal to the curious. There are war veterans, history buffs, scientists, nuclear industry workers, filmmakers, activists and cancer survivors. They arrive in the thousands, some travelling from far-flung places to experience firsthand where the atomic age began.

A series of art works or "chapters" including moving-image vignettes, photographic works, book works, and installations will be produced over the four-year period of the grant, while a culminating experimental documentary filmwill offer an extended meditation on the research and annual fieldwork.

“The most important thing for me as an artist is the question of vulnerability and what’s at stake. This project specifically focuses on the vulnerable human and animal subject, and on the slow violence unleashed through the vast and unstoppable nuclear experiment,” she says.

Kavanagh's project will construct an archive of voices that reveals the profound global embodiment of the nuclear era as collective and cumulative. Considered alongside the historic, ethical and ecological dimensions of Trinity site, this drilling down or deep mapping of the site will uniquely contribute to the growing body of scholarship on urgent questions of the nuclear age.

U of L researchers awarded more than $907,000 in research funding

Today, Kirsty Duncan, Canada’s Minister of Science, announced the recipients of several Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grants and seven ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers are among those who secured funding for their projects.

“I want to commend the grant and scholarships recipients whose tireless efforts help us better understand our world and our relationships with each other,” says Duncan. “Our government is proud to support these talented researchers and scholars who are pushing the boundaries of knowledge to the benefit of Canadians and our growing middle class.”

“We are extremely pleased that seven U of L research projects were successful in this competition,” says Dr. Claudia Malacrida, associate vice-president (research). “It demonstrates the strength of our researchers in the social sciences and humanities and we congratulate each one of them.”

The funding includes Partnership Development Grants, designed to foster new research with new or existing partners, Insight Development Grants that support research in its beginning stages, and Insight Grants for long-term research initiatives. The research projects are diverse, spanning the fields of visual arts, anthropology, psychology, digital humanities, finance and history and gender studies.

Dr. Dan O'Donnell

Dr. Dan O’Donnell, a professor in the Department of English, conducts research in the Digital Humanities, where tools and methods from computer science are applied to humanities fields like history, philosophy and literature. His digital tools, like the Internet, make it easy to share research information widely, but O’Donnell has found the world of research publishing hasn’t changed much, with the same major publishers running the market. He began working on building a different kind of research network called Future Commons where research is freely shared and publicly available and where corporations can still make a profit. Dr. Catherine Kingfisher

Dr. Catherine Kingfisher, an anthropology professor, will explore urban collective housing communities as non-individualistic approaches to well-being. Such communities work to balance independence and interdependence by including both personal/private and shared/collective spaces, and, unlike many intentional communities, are integrated with, rather than segregated from, society at large. Kingfisher will compare communities in Tokyo and Vancouver to gain insight into how this model of the good life operates in cultural contexts that historically and ideologically have stressed different aspects of individualism and collectivism. Dr. Fangfang Li

Dr. Fangfang Li, a psychology professor, will examine factors that may influence speech errors in second-language learners. She found that errors made by local students in French Immersion programs persisted over time, even though researchers expected the students would make fewer speech errors when they reached higher grades. Li hypothesizes that the errors persist because opportunities to speak with native French speakers are limited in a community where English is the dominant language. Li’s research will look at a mixed bilingual program in Edmonton to see if the second-language learners there, who have more opportunity to speak with native speakers, produce more accurate speech as they advance to higher grades. Dr. Yutao Li

Dr. Yutao Li, a professor in the Faculty of Management at the U of L’s Calgary campus, will explore the costs and benefits of banks’ involvement in lending networks. While greater connectivity in a network can be helpful because it gives a bank more information it can use to evaluate a borrower’s credit risk, it can also be detrimental if risk enters the financial system and spreads throughout the network, as it did during the financial crisis of 2007-2008. Li’s study is the first to investigate banks’ lending networks and the research will help build understanding about how banks’ network connectivity affects information acquisition, lending practices and quality of financial reporting. Dr. Paul Vasey

Dr. Paul Vasey, a psychology professor, will delve into competition for mates in cultures that recognize third genders, specifically the muxes in the Istmo region of Oaxaca, Mexico and the fa’afafine in Samoa. The fa’afafine and muxes are same-sex attracted feminine males or what could be termed transgender in North America. They engage in sexual activity with masculine men who are bisexual, thus creating a competitive atmosphere for heterosexual women. In contrast, women in Euro-American cultures most often face competition from other women. Vasey and his students will conduct research in Canada and at their field sites in Samoa and Mexico to see how the presence of third-gender males affects the behaviour and psychology of heterosexual individuals. Dr. Carol Williams

Dr. Carol Williams, a professor in Women and Gender Studies and History, and her collaborators, Linda Weasel Head, Hali Heavy Shield and Faye Heavy Shield, will assemble diverse and new historical accounts of Kainai women’s social reform work between 1968 and 1990. The researchers will engage with the Kainai community and propose a series of cultural and historical workshops for all age groups to encourage conversation and storytelling. The study hopes to challenge the colonial character of the archives as they exist and the myths of Indigenous-Settler relations. The study, in line with the recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, seeks to expand historical literacy about how Kainai women transformed their communities. Kavanagh explores global phenomenon of atomic tourism

It has been 70 years since the world was introduced to the devastating power of an atomic bomb, and as the anniversary of the first detonation approaches, a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge professor is embarking on a unique project that examines the growing global phenomenon of atomic tourism – one that attracts millions of visitors each year to significant sites of atomic history.

Faculty of Fine Arts professor and artist Mary Kavanagh is in the early stages of a multi-year project that examines atomic tourism as enacted at Trinity, New Mexico, where the first nuclear device was successfully tested on July 16, 1945 near the end of the Second World War. Three weeks later, the United States dropped successive atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.

Kavanagh has twice been to Trinity, laying the groundwork for her research project. Situated deep in the desert on the White Sands Missile Range in Southern New Mexico, the site is opened to the public only one day per year (the first Saturday in April) and attracts 3,000 to 4,000 visitors annually. Last year, Kavanagh conducted 45 on-site interviews during the annual Open House and assembled a series of compelling video portraits of the people who visited. Kavanagh will return to continue filming at the Trinity Open House on Apr. 4, 2015.

“Rather than focusing on the historic significance of Trinity, which is well understood, my interest resides in documenting the living history of the site and responding to its continuing cultural and social relevance,” says Kavanagh, whose project is funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Office of Research & Innovation Services. “The interviews I have so far conducted reveal a highly charged, emotional and psychological connection to this place and to the broader nuclear story that continues to resonate for many people. The steady lineup of visitors willing to share their insights in front of the camera was stunning.”

From war veterans to history buffs, peace activists and cancer survivors, Kavanagh has encountered a full range of motivations for visiting. She even met a young couple who exchanged wedding vows at ground zero.

“I am struck by the way people described the site, calling it holy or haunted, a prison, a celebration, sobering and festive. Perhaps it is all these things at once,” says Kavanagh. “We are still nowhere near collectively coming to terms with our relationship to nuclear technology, and though 70 years have passed since the bombs were dropped on Japan, the memory still haunts us, the Cold War quietly simmers, nuclear industry continues to wreak havoc, and a tension remains, carried in the bodies of all of us.”

The project, which will unfold over the next five years and culminate in 2020, the 75th anniversary of the bomb, will ultimately result in a feature-length documentary film.

Atomic Tourist: Trinity follows Kavanagh’s 2012 research and exhibition project entitled Atomic Suite – a cinematic video projection and photographic installation that addresses her time spent with the U.S. military in Wendover, UT. Kavanagh also recently presented a video project, Track of Interest: Exercise Vigilant Eagle 13, at the 2015 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art. It was developed from her participation in the Canadian Forces Artists Program.

Since 2007, Kavanagh has been advancing a body of work that examines sites connected to the development of weapons of mass destruction, from the first atomic bomb, to cold war nuclear and chemical weapons testing programs, to the disposal of nuclear weapons stockpiling.

“I have then been interpreting and inscribing the impact of this legacy on the human/animal subject – vulnerable bodies situated within socioeconomic systems that render capital before ecology or ethics.”

Fine Arts showcases ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge talent

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Faculty of Fine Arts is well represented in a pair of major North American exhibitions as the outstanding quality of both alumni and faculty is on display.

David Hoffos (BFA Art ’94), Mary-Anne McTrowe (BFA Art ’98, Art Technician) and Dan Wong (BFA Art ’03) have work appearing in “Oh, Canada,” a North American wide event organized by the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

Originally exhibited in Massachusetts, from May 2012 to April 2013, the show has made its way back to Canada. After appearing in Atlantic Canada, the exhibition now fills multiple galleries in Calgary – The Glenbow, The Nickel Galleries at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary, Illingworth Kerr Gallery and The Esker Foundation.

Art majors Peacock, Spencer earn Beny scholarships

Evan Peacock and Luke Spencer, bachelor of fine arts students, have been named as the 2014 Roloff Beny Excellence in the Photographic Arts Awards recipients. As winners of the prestigious annual awards, the pair will each receive scholarships worth $5,000 to further their creative activities and research.

“The awards recognize academic and artistic achievement in students who have a focused interest in photo-arts,” says Mary Kavanagh, art faculty. “Established by the Roloff Beny Foundation, the awards provide travel opportunities to complement the recipients’ creative activities and research.”

The award money must be used to offset costs incurred by travel, photography equipment and photo supplies.

The Roloff Beny Excellence in the Photographic Arts Awards are competitive and applicants were adjudicated on the quality of their proposals and submitted work.

“The committee considered a high quality and competitive group of applications before making their selection,” says Kavanagh.

Peacock's winning project takes him to one of the world’s most remote locations, the Easter Islands. There he will document current ecological and cultural spaces in relation to the famous historic artifacts of the islands and produce a short, experimental film.

Spencer examines the role of the itinerant photographer and the photographic images made while travelling. On a journey by camper van to Panama City, Panama, Spencer will use 19th century wet-plate techniques to produce singular, labour intensive images.

“The Volkswagon Westfalia I purchased will become a mobile dark room,” explains Spencer. “I plan to travel for four months, taking photographs as I go. It is an ambitious plan and I’m looking forward to it. I was looking for a longer term project that I could totally focus on and this is it.”

He adds that he was surprised and extremely pleased to win the Roloff Beny Award.

In recognition of its excellence in art instruction and research, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge was one of five Canadian institutions selected in 2005 to receive $860,000 from the Roloff Beny Foundation to generate ongoing funding for student scholarships and infrastructure costs in traditional and digital photo-arts.
