Codenamed &quot;Trinity,&quot; the test took place deep in the desert on July 16, 1945, south of the Manhattan project&#39;s headquarters in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Every living thing within a mile of the blast was obliterated. A rehearsal for the bombing of Hiroshima three weeks later, and Nagasaki three days after that, today the significance of Trinity site as a marker for the birth of the atomic age is widely acknowledged socially, culturally, and psychologically.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:300px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/MarywithcameraRawfile.jpg" title="Photo by Tyler Muzzin" alt=""><div class="image-caption">Photo by Tyler Muzzin</div></div></p><p>Kavanagh has been making annual trips to Trinity, New Mexico, since 2012. Building upon interviews gathered during a highly successful pilot study, Kavanagh will continue to gather participant testimonials from a broad spectrum of tourists during bi-annual Trinity Open Houses.</p><p>&quot;This audio/visual material will provide a spatial-temporal archive, consisting of an accumulation of voices, perspectives and experiences all addressing the unique meaning of Trinity site,&quot; says Kavanagh.</p><p>She anticipates the results of her study will have implications for scholars in the humanities and social sciences, or for anyone engaged in post-atomic studies, especially as the Trinity test nears its 75th Anniversary (2020) and interest in the subject ramps up.</p><p>Interview participants have offered a variety of motivations for visiting the test site, ranging from the deeply personal to the curious. There are war veterans, history buffs, scientists, nuclear industry workers, filmmakers, activists and cancer survivors. They arrive in the thousands, some travelling from far-flung places to experience firsthand where the atomic age began.</p><p>A series of art works or &quot;chapters&quot; including moving-image vignettes, photographic works, book works, and installations will be produced over the four-year period of the grant, while a culminating experimental documentary filmwill offer an extended meditation on the research and annual fieldwork.</p><p>&ldquo;The most important thing for me as an artist is the question of vulnerability and what&rsquo;s at stake. This project specifically focuses on the vulnerable human and animal subject, and on the slow violence unleashed through the vast and unstoppable nuclear experiment,&rdquo; she says.</p><p>Kavanagh&#39;s project will construct an archive of voices that reveals the profound global embodiment of the nuclear era as collective and cumulative. While greater connectivity in a network can be helpful because it gives a bank more information it can use to evaluate a borrower&rsquo;s credit risk, it can also be detrimental if risk enters the financial system and spreads throughout the network, as it did during the financial crisis of 2007-2008. Vasey and his students will conduct research in Canada and at their field sites in Samoa and Mexico to see how the presence of third-gender males affects the behaviour and psychology of heterosexual individuals. Three weeks later, the United States dropped successive atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.</p><p>Kavanagh has twice been to Trinity, laying the groundwork for her research project. Situated deep in the desert on the White Sands Missile Range in Southern New Mexico, the site is opened to the public only one day per year (the first Saturday in April) and attracts 3,000 to 4,000 visitors annually. Last year, Kavanagh conducted 45 on-site interviews during the annual Open House and assembled a series of compelling video portraits of the people who visited. The steady lineup of visitors willing to share their insights in front of the camera was stunning.&rdquo;</p><p>From war veterans to history buffs, peace activists and cancer survivors, Kavanagh has encountered a full range of motivations for visiting. She even met a young couple who exchanged wedding vows at ground zero.</p><p>&ldquo;I am struck by the way people described the site, calling it holy or haunted, a prison, a celebration, sobering and festive. Perhaps it is all these things at once,&rdquo; says Kavanagh. &ldquo;We are still nowhere near collectively coming to terms with our relationship to nuclear technology, and though 70 years have passed since the bombs were dropped on Japan, the memory still haunts us, the Cold War quietly simmers, nuclear industry continues to wreak havoc, and a tension remains, carried in the bodies of all of us.&rdquo;</p><p>The project, which will unfold over the next five years and culminate in 2020, the 75th anniversary of the bomb, will ultimately result in a feature-length documentary film.</p><p><em>Atomic Tourist: Trinity</em> follows Kavanagh&rsquo;s 2012 research and exhibition project entitled <em>Atomic Suite</em> &ndash; a cinematic video projection and photographic installation that addresses her time spent with the U.S. military in Wendover, UT. Kavanagh also recently presented a video project, <em>Track of Interest: Exercise Vigilant Eagle 13</em>, at the 2015 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art. As winners of the prestigious annual awards, the pair will each receive scholarships worth $5,000 to further their creative activities and research.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:150px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/LukeSpencer.jpg" title="Luke Spencer" alt=""><div class="image-caption">Luke Spencer</div></div></p><p>&ldquo;The awards recognize academic and artistic achievement in students who have a focused interest in photo-arts,&rdquo; says Mary Kavanagh, art faculty.&nbsp; &ldquo;Established by the Roloff Beny Foundation, the awards provide travel opportunities to complement the recipients&rsquo; creative activities and research.&rdquo;</p><p>The award money must be used to offset costs incurred by travel, photography equipment and photo supplies.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:150px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/EvanPeacock.jpg" title="Evan Peacock" alt=""><div class="image-caption">Evan Peacock</div></div></p><p>The Roloff Beny Excellence in the Photographic Arts Awards are competitive and applicants were adjudicated on the quality of their proposals and submitted work.</p><p>&ldquo;The committee considered a high quality and competitive group of applications before making their selection,&rdquo; says Kavanagh.</p><p>Peacock&#39;s winning project takes him to one of the world&rsquo;s most remote locations, the Easter Islands. There he will document current ecological and cultural spaces in relation to the famous historic artifacts of the islands and produce a short, experimental film.<br /><br /> Spencer examines the role of the itinerant photographer and the photographic images made while travelling. On a journey by camper van to Panama City, Panama, Spencer will use 19th century wet-plate techniques to produce singular, labour intensive images.</p><p>&ldquo;The Volkswagon Westfalia I purchased will become a mobile dark room,&rdquo; explains Spencer.&nbsp; &ldquo;I plan to travel for four months, taking photographs as I go. It is an ambitious plan and I&rsquo;m looking forward to it.
