Master of Education Counselling Psychology seat expansion a boost to mental health profession

Graduate students looking to become mental health professionals will have more opportunities to study in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Master of Education Counselling Psychology program thanks to funding support from the Government of Alberta.

The Faculty of Education graduate program is the only route to registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists.

Earlier this fall, the province announced $780,000 of support to add 15 seats over three years to the Faculty of Education’s master’s program. ULethbridge was one of 12 post-secondary schools to receive funding, creating a total of 761 new seats in a variety of programs, including psychiatric nursing, psychology, social work, child and youth care, and addiction counselling.

“Ours is the only graduate program that was funded for seat expansion, which is significant because a graduate degree in counselling psychology is the only pathway to registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists, and demand for admissions to these graduate programs is extremely high,” says Dr. David Slomp, associate dean of graduate studies and research in the Faculty of Education.

The funding will allow the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to add two integral positions in support of the influx of new students — a clinical practicum supervisor and an administrative support for practicum and partnership development. The first cohort of five students has been admitted and will begin their practicum placements in Fall 2025. Additional groups of five students will be admitted in each of the next two admission cycles.

“With a growing need for mental health services, this seat expansion will benefit families across the province,” says Dan Williams, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction. “No matter what part of Alberta someone calls home, they deserve access to consistent, high-quality mental health care. Our government is proud to be working with post-secondary institutions, making sure services are available to Albertans in need.”

Slomp says it is imperative the students have opportunities to participate in high-quality practicum placements. While some of those can be filled on campus, the new positions will assist in cultivating more relationships within the community.

“The clinical practicum supervisor will work within the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Counselling Services team to provide supervision for an expanded number of practicum students working within that unit,” he says. “Finding quality practicum placement experiences for students seeking to register as psychologists is becoming increasingly challenging. We have great partners, but we need to do more to enrich those partnerships and to expand the number of counsellors we partner with.”

The Mental Health Professions Enrollment Expansion grant program committed nearly $10 million over three years to create more spaces to train mental health professionals at post-secondary institutions across the province. To learn more, visit the Government of Alberta website.

New Master of Education program equips teachers to address reading and math developmental challenges

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Education is adding a critical study theme option for graduate students pursuing a Master of Education. The MEd (General) in Literacies and Numeracies will better prepare teachers to help students develop foundational reading and numeracy skills.

This program marks the first time the Faculty of Education has offered a graduate program with a numeracy focus.

“This issue was apparent before the pandemic, but as we became aware of the severe learning loss many students experienced during this time, we realized teachers at increasingly higher grade levels were struggling to cope with the additional challenges in reading and numeracy their students were bringing back to school with them,” says Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. David Slomp.

Slomp says the program marks the first time the Faculty of Education has offered a graduate program with a numeracy focus, which adds another layer to its long history of producing graduates with a strong grasp on literacy.

“While we have offered many programs in literacies over the years, this is the first that will focus specifically on early years and foundational literacies,” he says. “In this program, students will obtain a rich understanding of what numeracy and literacy are, and what knowledge, skill, and dispositions in numeracy and literacies their students will need to thrive. Furthermore, they will be equipped with concrete strategies for how to develop and assess those qualities in their students.

Slomp says ideal candidates for the MEd (General) in Literacies and Numeracies are teachers who are working with students struggling to acquire those foundational reading and numeracy understandings as well as those seeking professional advancement.

“Many of these teachers will work in the primary grades, but teachers of older students who are struggling with reading and numeracy will also benefit a great deal from this program,” he says. “This is also a program for teachers who are looking to be reinvigorated, who are looking for opportunities to think deeply about their practice, who are considering formal and informal leadership opportunities.”

As with other graduate programs offered by the Faculty of Education, the MEd (General) in Literacies and Numeracies will be firmly rooted in research-based best practices. The program’s first cohort is planned to commence in the Summer 2024 term, with applications to be accepted until March 15, 2024.

Dr. David Slomp named Board of Governors Teaching Chair

Known for his expertise in evaluation and assessment, the Faculty of Education’s Dr. David Slomp has been appointed a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors Teaching Chair.

His knowledge of evaluation and assessment allows him to create the kind of educational experiences that prepare his students to become leaders in the classrooms of the future.

Educated at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta, Slomp joined the U of L in 2011. His background includes classroom experience, both as a high school English teacher and a college instructor. At the U of L, he soon established himself as an outstanding teacher and researcher. Slomp rarely lectures, rather he assigns readings that contain the content he wants his students to explore and then invites students to take part in learning activities that help them examine the implications of the reading for their own practice.

His knowledge of evaluation and assessment allows him to create the kind of educational experiences that prepare his students to become leaders in the classrooms of the future. He is continually aware of his responsibility to craft and maintain an optimal learning environment, something he accomplishes by soliciting and reviewing feedback from students. Slomp has special expertise in writing assessment and his work in this area has made him an oft-cited authority across the province and beyond.

As the Board of Governors Teaching Chair, Slomp plans to use his expertise in the area of writing instruction and assessment design to support ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ programs and faculty. Slomp is committed not only to excellence in teaching, but also scholarship of teaching and leadership in education. One of his plans is to develop a Community Service Learning course series on writing grant proposals for community groups, where U of L students will partner with a community agency to assist them in writing grant proposals.

An educator whose teaching philosophy is based on the idea that educational experiences should prepare students for life beyond school, Dr. David Slomp (Education) has been appointed a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors Teaching Chair.

Slomp joined the Faculty of Education in 2011 and has quickly established a reputation as an outstanding teacher and researcher.

As the Board of Governor’s Teaching Chair, Slomp plans to use his expertise in the area of writing instruction and assessment design to support ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ programs and faculty.

His appointment as a Board of Governors Teaching Chair is for a two-year term commencing July 1, 2016.

Curriculum Design Challenge Day Inspires Innovation Among Master of Education Students

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Master of Education in Curriculum and Assessment Program held its first annual Curriculum Design Challenge Day on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. The event, co-hosted by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge AGILITY Program, challenged participants to propose a new vision for the curriculum of the first professional semester (PSI) in the Faculty of Education.

Dr. David Slomp and Dr. Amy von Heyking (Faculty of Education) organized the Challenge Day with the intention of providing participants the opportunity to propose new solutions to a specific and real-world curriculum challenge. Partnering with the U of L AGILITY Program, which focuses on providing innovative and entrepreneurial learning experiences for students, the Curriculum Design exercise allowed 45 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge master's students to apply their knowledge and experience to offer creative and innovative solutions for post-secondary curriculum.

“The enthusiasm was infectious and the students shared creative and inspiring solutions for the problem presented,” says Dr. Lesley Brown, Vice-Provost & Associate VP Academic. “The event reinforced that opportunities for innovation span many disciplines, and that students are well-equipped to bring unique, varied ideas to the table in a real-world approach.”

Aaron Stout was one of 45 master's students to participate in the Curriculum Design Challenge.

The idea behind Challenge Day and the Inspiring Education initiative isn’t radical.

“In many ways, the event focused on answering perennial questions about how to make education relevant for kids, and how we are connecting with learners so they see that there are authentic ways to demonstrate what they have learned and why it matters,” says von Heyking.

The panel of judges for the event was selected based on their expertise and involvement in developing education:

Challenge Day participants commented on how the biggest challenge of the day, besides the five-hour time limit, was throwing away preconceived ideas and structures that the Faculty of Education has for students entering their PSI.

“For me, it was interesting to think about what is education, what is its purpose and from that, what should a teacher look like. It was cool to just throw away everything that you know already and just create a whole new vision,” says Calvin de Haan, first year Master of Education in Curriculum and Assessment student.

Participants were encouraged to use their personal experiences to propose changes to the current PSI structure based on problems that they encountered as student teachers and as current education professionals mentoring student teachers.

“One of the things that stood out to me was that our opinions were being valued. I really felt that they were interested in what we had to say,” says Lisa Paton, first year Master of Education in Curriculum and Assessment student.

The winning team of Curriculum Design Challenge Day consisted of Sara Jans, Heidi Paterson, Bob Vanderbeek, Josie Hammond, Fleur Sweetman, Kaeli New and Morgan Schaufele. Their solution to innovating PSI was to develop competent education professionals by focusing on relational intelligence, self-awareness and regulation, and sensitivity to context and situation.

The ideas and visions generated from the event will be presented to faculty members to provide different perspectives on how U of L Faculty of Education Professional Semesters will be done in the future.

In 2013, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Education launched the master’s in education program focusing on curriculum and assessment.

“By 2016 Alberta expects to have brand new curriculum in every subject area,” says Dr. David Slomp. This program is designed to promote teacher leadership in curriculum and assessment redesign that is taking place across Canada.

“Rather than being subject-specific,” says Dr. Amy von Heyking, who co-developed the MEd program with Dr. Slomp, “the radically changed curriculum is framed around competencies, such as critical thinking, innovation, creativity, collaboration, and problem solving.”

“Outcomes for these core competencies are hard to assess using standard practices,” says Slomp. “Changes in curriculum have to be paralleled by changes in assessment. The two need to be integrated, not just practically, but theoretically and intellectually. When you build a curriculum that works at this level you need locally developed, high-quality assessments to capture the competencies.”

“Traditionally, questions of curriculum and assessment have been separated,” says von Heyking. “This program brings them together, forcing a dialogue that asks students to develop new theoretical models for both.” Students examine the way curriculum is changing and the way assessment questions need to change in response – then they build assessment tools that reflect those changes.

“We get each of them to identify an assessment need in their classroom, school or district,” says Slomp. He cites the example of one educator who is teaching Biology, Chemistry and Math together as part of the redesign. “We will work with her on how to measure those core competencies in that kind of a packaged science course.”

“We ask them to think differently,” says von Heyking. “They come to understand the history of the system and what we can learn from past innovations. We challenge them to be able to defend what they believe education is for. Fundamentally, these are philosophical issues.”

The three-year program consists of campus-based courses each July, one online course each fall, and another each spring.

“The first year is setting a foundation for understanding curriculum and assessment,” says von Heyking; “the second is research-focused, looking at innovative initiatives and having the opportunity to work specifically on their own practice; the final year puts it together, synthesizing what they’ve learned and how it reshapes our understanding of curriculum and assessment.”

The current cohort, with participants from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the Yukon, shares information and exchanges ideas in a collaborative environment, taking back to districts, schools and classrooms groundbreaking theories and practices.

“Students taking this course are emerging in their schools and districts as leaders,” says Slomp. “They’re able to design more local curricula and work in much more creative ways with school structure,” adds von Heyking.
