Newfound aquatic parasite named after longtime ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge professor

A significant find by a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduate student has led to a key paper in the International Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, as well as a touching tribute to one of the most respected aquatic biologists in North America.

Graduate student Molly Tilley and her supervisor, Dr. Cam Goater, have characterized the life cycle of M. rasmusseni.

As an undergraduate student, Molly Tilley found large, white, disfiguring lesions surrounding the eyes of fathead minnows in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Pond. Her observation kicked off a long process of discovery that uncovered what she and supervisor Dr. Cam Goater refer to as an “emerging parasite” that has the ability to disrupt the aquatic food chain. Given its prominence as a new species and being identified in southern Alberta waters, the duo felt it was fitting for the parasite to be named after retired ULethbridge professor Dr. Joe Rasmussen — Myxobolus rasmusseni.

“Joe and I had been close friends and colleagues for many years,” says Goater. “His stature within Canadian science circles is legendary — I can’t think of an award in his field that he hasn’t won. Naming this parasite after him was another way to honour his range of contributions. To me, he is the top aquatic biologist in the country, maybe North America, and nobody is more deserving of a recognition of this type.”

The new parasite is known as a myxozoan. One member of this group of parasites has become infamous in recent years, especially in Alberta, for causing ‘whirling disease’ in trout. This disease is spreading rapidly in western North America, posing a major challenge for fisheries management and conservation. Myxobolus rasmusseni represents a novel form of this condition. The new parasite infects fathead minnows, a species that plays a significant role in the food webs of prairie ponds and lakes.

“The problem is that fatheads tend to occur in the middle of our aquatic food chains,” says Goater. “Pike eat them, trout eat them and all sorts of fish-eating birds like herons and pelicans eat them. Our worry is that infection rates are often so high in juvenile minnows that they are unlikely to survive through the winter to reproduce the following spring. You’re really upsetting the ecosystem by losing a key part of the food chain.”

Rasmussen, who spent 16 highly productive years at ULethbridge, says one of the most significant honours a biologist can experience is to have a new species named after them.

“The naming of species is an integral component of the communication of information about nature, and the stability of our system for describing and naming new organisms is a cherished aspect of our science,” he says. “To have your name attached to a new species is, therefore, one of the finest forms of immortality that can be conferred, and to be recognized in such a distinguished manner by my colleague Dr. Goater and his student, Molly Tilley, is gratifying beyond words.

“Indeed, my involvement with Dr. Goater as a friend and colleague has been a major highlight in my career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.”

Tilley recently completed her master’s thesis on the discovery of M. rasmusseni. She says that she is now authoring another paper on its effect on individual minnow behaviour and survival.

“The results suggest that not only does infection with M. rasmusseni ultimately cause the death of the host, we found that infection reduces the physiological performance of individual fish which in turn impacts their functional role in the ecosystem,” she says. “This work will provide a solid foundation for future research which could ultimately inform management strategies.”

Rasmussen is impressed with the work of Tilley and Goater on the parasite that bears his name, and keen to follow its progression.

“Since Dr. Goater’s lab has characterized the complete life cycle of this new parasite, as well as its genetic profile, M. rasmusseni can be cultivated in the laboratory, and will likely contribute significantly to our understanding of these interesting organisms and the pathology and immunological challenge they represent,” says Rasmussen.

Parasitic worm manipulating ants into zombie-like behaviour the focus of recent U of L study

A new study co-authored by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Dr. Cam Goater and graduate student Dr. Brad van Paridon (BSc ’10, PhD ’17) is beginning to unlock the evolution of one of the most captivating and complex parasite life cycles in nature.

In a paper published in this week’s issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Goater, van Paridon , Dr. John Gilleard (��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary) and collaborator Dr. Charles Criscione (Texas A&M ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ) assess the genetic relationships of a parasitic worm to help explain how they take over the brains of ants, effectively manipulating them into zombies as they seek to complete their life cycle.

PNAS is widely considered one of the top three science journals in the world and Goater is quick to praise van Paridon’s work during his PhD studies as a driver of the latest research findings.

“His focus on integrating approaches in animal ecology, molecular biology and evolutionary theory is really what pushed this paper forward,” says Goater. “It’s a testament to the talent of our graduate students and the high level of research being done in our graduate programs.”

The parasite, known as the lancet liver fluke, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, is one of the most well-known and least understood parasites in nature. It infects ants and causes them to cling to vegetation and wait to be eaten by animals, including cattle and sheep. Consuming the parasite can cause the animals to develop liver diseases that are difficult to diagnose and treat, costing farmers time and money. They are prevalent in the Cypress Hills area of southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan.

“When these ants ingest larvae of the fluke, they crawl to the tops of flowers that are adjacent to their nests,” says Goater, a researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences who has been studying the ants and observing their bizarre behaviour for years. “Once they have settled on a flower, they firmly attach with their mandibles. A few hours later, if not eaten by a grazing mammal, the infected ants detach from the flower and return to their nest. They repeat the same attach/detach sequence the very next day — often on precisely the same flower petal.”

The natural world is ripe with examples of hosts changing their behaviour and even appearance at the bequest of a parasite, but researchers still do not fully understand how parasites cause these alterations or how they evolve.

Their paper, Clonemate cotransmission supports a role for kin selection in a puppeteer parasite, emphasizes that to understand the evolution of this absurd manipulation, it is important to understand how ants are exposed to these parasites, their fate inside an ant, and the genetic relationships between individual parasites. The life cycle starts as a microscopic egg in the dung of a grazing mammal such as a cow or deer before infecting and multiplying in snails and being released in tiny slime balls. Ants love to eat these slime balls but when they do, they become exposed to myriads of minuscule larvae that pass into the ant’s abdomen. Those in the abdomen reside there for the rest of the ant’s life, awaiting ingestion by a cow. One lone larvae, however, heads to the brain where it initiates the zombie-like behaviour — knowing it will die upon ingestion by a grazing mammal. Thus, the parasite in the brain sacrifices its life for its mates that live in the abdomen — a classic case of altruistic behaviour.

“Unlike equivalent stages of similar parasites, there is a very close genetic relationship between the parasite in the brain and those in the abdomen. In fact, they tend to be perfect clones,” says Goater. “This means that in sacrificing itself, the ‘brainworm’ facilitates the movement of close relatives into the next host where they can reproduce.”

The evolutionary explanation for why some animals appear to sacrifice themselves for others is a subject of much debate. The theory of kin selection seeks to explain altruistic behaviour as a mechanism by which individuals can increase the chance of their genes being passed to the next generation by improving chances of survival and reproduction of genetically related family members.

“By demonstrating the close genetic relations between brain- and abdomen-dwelling parasites in manipulated ants, we’ve been able to demonstrate the key role of kin selection in the evolution of this puppet master parasite.”

Study shows Battle River clam populations in drastic decline

Freshwater mussels in Alberta spend their lives out of sight but a Finnish researcher who has studied them since 1993 hopes they don’t stay out of mind.

The results of a study by Dr. Jouni Taskinen, a professor from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Jyväskylä in Finland who is a world expert on freshwater mussels, and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge biology professor Dr. Cam Goater, point to a troubling trend.

Taskinen and Goater have studied the Battle River southeast of Edmonton, a river that hosts the highest diversity of freshwater clams in Alberta.

“There’s some good news and some bad news,” says Taskinen. “The good news is that we could find small, one-year-old individuals of even the rare species. That shows that even the rarest species are reproducing in the river. It is a good sign of current reproduction, but the bad news is that there has been a drastic decline in clam density.”

Taskinen says similar results are being reported in many other areas of the world, making freshwater mussels one of the most endangered aquatic organisms.

“It’s quite a universal phenomenon that almost everywhere, native freshwater mussels are declining and there are probably several reasons that act together,” he says.

Those reasons include the building of dams, which affect the mobility of fish, increasing amounts of silt on the river bottom from human activities like construction, toxic contaminants in the water, or hot, dry weather that reduces water flows. Natural enemies like clam-eating muskrats, dam-building beavers and sterilizing parasites are also on the list. Fortunately, the exotic, invasive mussel species like the zebra mussel are not yet a problem in Alberta.

Taskinen and Goater were post-doctoral fellows at the same lab at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta when they first began studying clams in the Battle River. They decided to conclude their study this year since Taskinen is on sabbatical leave. In early June, Taskinen, his wife and four daughters arrived in Lethbridge to continue the study and to explore southern Alberta.

The Battle River is a hotspot of clam diversity in Alberta, likely because the river, which doesn’t originate in the mountains, has a more stable bottom environment that isn’t subjected to spring flooding. Taskinen and Goater have taken samples from the river every 11 years to assess clam biodiversity in the river and to evaluate changes in the density and age structure of clam populations.

“We don’t usually even see them but they are important players in the river or lake ecosystem,” says Taskinen. “They collect material from the water column and transfer it to the bottom where it is a good food source for insect larvae, for example. The insect larvae, on the other hand, are food for fish. Mussels provide all sorts of ecosystem services, including cleansing of water.”

Alberta is home to four main species of freshwater mussels, including the fatmucket, the most common clam, the white heelsplitter, the giant floater and the creek heelsplitter.

The life cycle of the clam begins with a larval stage. The adult female releases larvae called glochidia that attach themselves to the gills or fins of fish. Under normal circumstances, they don’t hurt the fish, but stay attached for two weeks to a month as they metamorphose into juveniles and then drop off to settle on the river bottom. If they happen to settle into a suitable environment, a new mussel bed is formed.

As filter feeders, a mussel can filter 10 to 30 litres of water per day, cleaning it in the process. They eat microscopic algae but collect all sorts of particles from the water and what they don’t eat, they pack into a ball of slime that they spit out onto the river bottom.

The distribution and occurrence of clams in Alberta, and in many other parts of the world, haven’t really been mapped out because they are not easy to find. But scientists do know that 40 species, out of 400 to 500 species of clams in the world, have gone extinct in the last century and many others are close to extinction.

“Mapping the distribution and densities of clams in Alberta rivers is a top priority for the management and conservation of this important but poorly known part of biological diversity. That’s one of the directions that we would like to take our research in the future,” he says.

Taskinen and his family will return to Finland at the end of July but they’ve used their time in Alberta to visit mountain and prairie landscapes alike.

“We have enjoyed being here and the weather in Lethbridge has been so nice while it’s been cold and rainy in Finland,” he says.

U of L biology students receive honours at Canadian Society of Zoologists meeting

A group of five ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students, working under the tutelage of Dr. Cam Goater of the Department of Biological Sciences, distinguished themselves at the recent Canadian Society of Zoologists meeting in Calgary.

Led by award winners Stephanie Reimer and Bradley Van Paridon, the group presented papers in a variety of sections and garnered significant attention for the research work being done at the U of L.

“I am extremely proud of the remarkable successes of our students at this conference,” says Goater, a foremost expert in the study of parasitism. “These competitions for Best Student Paper are getting more and more competitive, so to have two different students win two different competitions was a real thrill for our group.”

Reimer, who defended her Master of Science in April 2015, won the prestigious Cas C. Lindsey Prize for the best student presentation within the fields of behaviour, ecology and evolution. She is a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Post-Graduate Fellowship winner as well, and competed against master’s and PhD students from across the country for the Lindsey Prize.

Reimer’s presentation, Ecological Epidemiology of an Emerging Virus in Tiger Salamanders in Southern Alberta, discusses how emerging infectious diseases are a leading cause of global declines in amphibian populations.

“The emergence of Amybstoma tigrinum virus (ATV) in tiger salamander populations in southern Alberta has led to concerns regarding the population status of this prairie icon,” says Reimer. “Results from a longitudinal survey of a larval salamander population in Livingston Lake, Alberta showed that ATV transmission is strongly seasonal, increasing in prevalence from 0 to 100 per cent between early July and the timing of metamorphosis in mid-August. Despite consistency between years in the seasonal pattern of transmission, variability in annual ATV-induced mortality was extremely high. Our early results suggest that ecological factors that influence host quality act in addition, or synergistically, to ATV exposure to contribute to the magnitude of ATV-induced outbreaks within larval salamander populations.”

Van Paridon, who is in the midst of his PhD, won the Murray Fallis Award for the top student presentation in the fields of parasitology and immunology.

“He uses modern molecular tools to understand how invasive parasites enter host populations, how they spread, and the consequences they have on their new hosts,” says Goater. “The parasite he is studying is best known for its bizarre ability to turn one of its hosts (ants) into zombies that cling tightly onto vegetation at night.”

Van Paridon splits his time between the U of L and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary and recently won a fellowship from the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology in the United States. His paper was titled, Invasion Pathway, Life-cycle, and Host Utilization of Emerging Liver Fluke, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, in Wildlife and Cattle in Cypress Hills, Alberta.

“The lancet liver fluke emerged in Cypress Hills Park (CHP) in the 1990s. Results from annual host surveys show that 60 to 90 per cent of sympatric elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer and beef cattle are infected, with individual hosts often harbouring more than 1000 gravid worms,” says Van Paridon. “At this site of emergence, the life-cycle involves at least three species of Formicid ant as second intermediate host and one species of terrestrial snail (Oreohelix) as first host. Using two molecular markers, mtDNA gene sequences and microsatellites, we genotyped samples of adult worms from hosts in CHP, two other invasion sites in North America, and sites in Europe. Our results are consistent with invasion of CHP from multiple sources, likely via trans-border movement of domestic stock. An understanding of invasion pathway, life-cycle and host utilization patterns provide important tools for mitigating future spread of liver fluke to comparable sites in North America.”

Three of Goater’s other graduate students presented papers at the conference as well. Master of Science students Zach Dempsey and Natalia Phillips each presented, as did PhD student Melissa Beck.

“Melissa was selected to compete for the William S. Hoar Award for overall Best Student Oral Presentation,” says Goater. “Students have to submit separate proposals to compete for what is considered the most prestigious award of the annual meeting and she was one of six students selected to present, which is a real honour. She did not win, but it was a thrill to see her compete against students from the biggest and best-known labs in the country.”

The annual meeting once again highlighted the outstanding, national-level research work being done by ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduate students.

Goater helps breathe new life into textbook

An internationally recognized textbook on parasites has received a substantial upgrade due to the efforts of a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge biologist, his brother and an American colleague.

Dr. Cam Goater, his brother and an American colleague spent eight years rewriting The second edition of Parasitism - The Diversity and Ecology of Animal Parasites.

The second edition of Parasitism: The Diversity and Ecology of Animal Parasites, published by Cambridge ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Press, is the result of years of work performed by the U of L’s Dr. Cam Goater (biological sciences), his brother Dr. Timothy Goater from Vancouver Island ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and Gerald Esch of Wake Forest ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in North Carolina.

Canadian, American and European faculty members are already using the 2014 text, aimed at senior undergraduate students.

“The first edition of the book accomplished a great deal. It was a text used heavily by professors and students in North America and around the world including Malaysia, and Japan. But it was significantly out-of-date,” says Goater. “The text has been completely rewritten. It is more conceptual and theoretical than it was before.”

Early reviews of the text are glowing.

The Goater brothers were approached by Cambridge eight years ago about creating a second version of the text. After years of writing and revisions the result is an encompassing product.

“There are texts available that deal with the diversity of parasites and those that tackle their ecology. This is the first text to offer a synthesis of both components,” says Goater, adding that the text will be valuable for students focusing on disciplines including biology, immunology, evolution, conservation biology and medical sciences.

The early reviews of the text are glowing. The book has been described by peers as “a true parasitological tour de force” and that “even the pros will learn from this book”. For Goater, the positive reception by his colleagues has made the years of work worth the effort, adding that he hopes the text becomes a valuable tool that will inspire students around the globe for many years.

Goater and his brother were born in Moose Factory, Ont. and grew up in North Bay. With nature as their playground, the two developed a love of ecology and biology. The brothers were eventually mentored by the same professor, the late Dr. Al Bush (a co-author of the original textbook), at Brandon ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

“Many people are curious as to how brothers end up in the same field. Certainly, our love of nature was inspired by our surroundings and we were fortunate to share a mentor, but our proximity in age (three years) also played a role,” says Goater.

Goater recalls a childhood incident, when he and his brother were teens, and they came across a sickly fox. In trying to help, the boys brought the fox home not knowing the animal was rabid. While the brothers had to undergo intramuscular injections of the prophylactic drug available at the time, they started to question why the fox was infected, why other animals weren’t, and how it was possible that a disease could change the demeanour of an animal. It is this complexity and their fascination with the phenomenon of parasitism that provides the focus of their text.

The enthusiasm the Goater brothers shared as youth has translated into their enthusiasm for teaching, benefitting students at both the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Vancouver Island ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Andy Hakin says the release of this new text is emblematic of the type of university the U of L has become.

“Certainly this new text is an excellent career accomplishment for Dr. Goater and the knowledge contained within will benefit students for decades. However, more compelling to me is the experience Dr. Goater’s students are subject to in his class. Dr. Goater isn’t just teaching from a textbook – he wrote the textbook,” says Hakin.

Book Overview

Two core philosophies underlie the second edition of ‘Parasitism’, co-authored by Tim Goater, Cam Goater, and Jerry Esch. The first is that complex interactions that occur between parasites and their hosts – from the molecular cross-talk that occurs at the host-parasite interface, to the effects of parasites on host communities – are fundamentally ecological. The second is that a real appreciation for the phenomenon of parasitism requires knowledge of how natural selection has shaped parasite life cycles, life histories, and morphologies to solve particular problems associated with the parasitic lifestyle. Thus, for senior undergraduates that are being introduced to the phenomenon of parasitism in animals, the authors see a need for a single text with dual focus on the biodiversity and ecology/evolution of parasites. This dual, interdisciplinary approach, under one cover, is the hallmark of the text. The 17 chapters, eight of which are new since the first edition, have been thoroughly revised to meet the needs of a new generation of parasitology students, whether their interests lie in ecology, conservation biology, evolution, immunology, medical, wildlife, or veterinary sciences.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 9 at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballrooms.

A total of 103 employees, including 20 retiring employees and those who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service, will be honoured.

All employees are invited to the ceremony and reception to honour the award recipients listed below. The reception will include light refreshments.
