We had been thinking about establishing a scholarship for some time and our son&rsquo;s participation in that course affirmed our decision.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;Randy had an outstanding experience,&rdquo; says Nadine. &ldquo;He very much enjoyed the whole process. He enjoyed being involved in the university classroom; he received a mark and was very proud of his accomplishments. It was a positive, rewarding experience all around.&rdquo;</p><p>Many of the people who could be involved in the university experience at some level can&rsquo;t participate because of the tuition costs.</p><p>&ldquo;We wanted to create opportunities that wouldn&rsquo;t otherwise be there,&rdquo; says Don, past president of the U of L Alumni Association (2009-2011) and a 2005 inductee into the Alumni Honour Society.</p><p>The Chandler Family Award is a two-part endowment. The Chandler Family Inclusion Fund will assist students with developmental or intellectual disabilities or an academic staff member who enables the participation of these individuals in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community. If there are no applicants to the Fund, the annual proceeds go to support the Chandler Family Inclusion Award, which is given to an undergraduate or graduate student who has shown outstanding leadership in the areas of developmental or intellectual disability or who has shown initiative to improve the lives of these individuals.</p><p>Maggie MacKay, 20, was the first recipient of the award. She has audited several courses, with an assistant, in the Faculty of Fine Arts, including a drama course in movement and a stagecraft course about the technical side of theatre productions.</p><p>&ldquo;I liked making masks and I drew a Snow-White set design,&rdquo; says Maggie. &ldquo;I enjoyed it.&rdquo;</p><p>Her parents, <strong>Bruce (BASc (BA) &rsquo;84)</strong> and <strong>Flora (BASc (BA) &rsquo;85) MacKay</strong>, say her participation in university life is about much more than earning credits.</p><p>&ldquo;Maggie is an intelligent young woman and she&rsquo;s continuing to learn academically,&rdquo; says Flora. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t expect she will get a university degree; it&rsquo;s more the experience of interacting and socializing with her peers, navigating around campus and developing confidence. She&rsquo;s learned a lot.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;The gift is a wonderful way for the Chandler family to support people like Maggie and others to have this experience at university but it&rsquo;s also an encouragement for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ to implement programming or a system to make it possible,&rdquo; says Bruce.</p><p>When asked if she&rsquo;d like to take more classes, Maggie says simply, &ldquo;Yes, I&rsquo;d love to.&rdquo;</p></div></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/alumni-honour-society" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alumni Honour Society</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/don-chandler" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Don Chandler</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/nadine-chandler" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Nadine Chandler</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/lisa-doolittle" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lisa Doolittle</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/bruce-mackay" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Bruce MacKay</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/flora-mackay" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Flora MacKay</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Creating a more inclusive campus" class="rdf-meta"></span> Fri, 13 Jul 2018 19:38:32 +0000 trevor.kenney 9797 at /unews Inspired by tragedy, alumnus launches province-wide anti-bullying campaign /unews/article/inspired-tragedy-alumnus-launches-province-wide-anti-bullying-campaign <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-38cb62f2fc3f97edb3069704b68e8052"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">May 7, 2013</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>On what was otherwise a regular December afternoon this past year, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge alumnus Manwar Khan (BSc &#39;07) witnessed a brutal event that changed his life forever.</p><p>But rather than try and put that day behind him and move on, he&#39;s using his experience as the impetus for change.</p><p>Khan, a 37-year-old father of two-year-old twins, was on the Edmonton LRT when one passenger attacked another just a few metres away and began a ruthless beating. Shocked by the savagery of the assault and the daunting task of stopping it, Khan appealed to other passengers for assistance, but no one came forward.</p><p>Although Khan desperately tried to stop the attack, one man died and the other now sits in a jail cell, awaiting trial on second-degree murder charges. Khan, with the images of that day still fresh in his mind, has launched a provincial-wide anti-bullying initiative in an effort to raise awareness of bullying and empower bystanders.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:400px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/ManwarKhan-main.jpg" title="Alumnus Manwar Khan is bringing his anti-bullying campaign to the U of L campus for a Sept. 14 rally." alt=""><div class="image-caption">Alumnus Manwar Khan is bringing his anti-bullying campaign to the U of L campus for a Sept. 14 rally.</div></div></p><p>&quot;Since that day, I have been haunted by that incident,&quot; he says from his Edmonton office where he works as an IT professional for Alberta Human Services. &quot;Even when I go to bed, I think about this. When I&#39;m in the LRT I think about it. What if I could go back to that day, what could I try differently? I can either sit here and hope that this will pass, or I can stand up and help other people by raising awareness among them to speak up against bullying. I want bullying to be stopped &ndash; period.&quot;</p><p>Khan&#39;s first anti-bullying rally was held in Edmonton on Apr. 27, with a second event staged in Calgary on May 11. He will be at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge for a Sept. 14 rally at 1:30 p.m. outside the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport &amp; Wellness.</p><p>&quot;I want to encourage people to stand up against bullying, not just stand by,&quot; says Khan. &quot;I thought of my own kids that day, what if something like this was happening to them, who is going to help them? People actually have the power together, they just don&#39;t know.&quot;</p><p>Khan came to study at the U of L in 2001 as an international student from Bangladesh. He met his wife, Nashid Sultana (BSc &#39;06), on campus and looks back on his U of L experience as a springboard to the life he leads today. It also helped shape his character, something that was tested that December afternoon.</p><p>&quot;My education at the U of L sharpened my self-awareness and moral values,&quot; he says. &quot;These values have guided me throughout my career and now stimulate me to organize this campaign and to stand up against bullying.&quot;</p><p>His ties to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ still run deep, and Khan was pleased to welcome Dr. Bruce MacKay (liberal education) to the Edmonton rally as a guest speaker.</p><p>&quot;He was not only a teacher to me, but he also provided some valuable advice whenever I was stressed out with academic life,&quot; says Khan.</p><p>He also credited Lesley Rode (academic advising) and Dr. Shahadat Hossain as key influences on his<br />U of L experience.</p><p>&quot;Lesley was the one who guided me throughout my academic life at the U of L and was my academic mentor,&quot; says Khan. &quot;Dr. Hossain was the one who encouraged me to enroll in the co-op program to get an understanding of the professional environment. That changed my life and led to my job in government.&quot;</p><p>Khan now has the opportunity to give back to the community he still considers as his Canadian home. It is one of awareness, understanding, empathy and strength, all attributes influenced by his time at the U of L.</p><p>&quot;Bullying is not acceptable and there is no place for bullying in our society,&quot; he says. &quot;Violence should never be tolerated. I want to encourage people to stand up against bullying, not only for yourself but for others.&quot;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/calgary" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Calgary</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/city/edmonton" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Edmonton</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/1st-choice-savings-centre-sport-wellness" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport &amp; The other change-makers include Dr. Bruce MacKay (liberal education), Lisa Doolittle (theatre and drama), Dr. Tiffany Muller-Myrdahl (women and gender studies) and Emily Luce (new media).</p><p>"We are interested in the large issues around what constitutes effective action and whether young people today are engaged in social issues," explains Mills, who says the work was inspired by debates around the recent Occupy movement.</p><p>"The Occupy movement, no matter how disorganized they may appear to be, suggests that what may be lacking is the theory, knowledge and skills necessary to sustain active engagement against societal pressures that encourage passive acceptance," says Mills, who hopes to draw on the success of social movements that did work like the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), which revolutionized AIDS activism in the 90s.</p><p>"This project will explore connections between a liberal education and encouraging activism and social engagement," says Mills.</p><p>She notes that taking a multi-disciplinary approach allows for different ways of approaching the issue.</p><p>"People from different disciplines tackle problems differently," says Mills. "Ideas can be investigated through poetry, art and dance, and connections can be made in non-linear ways. That's what makes this interdisciplinary model so strong."</p><p>While still in the early stages, plans for the project include several public activities and activist events including: exhibitions, video screenings and public-site projects with the U of L Art Gallery; a community activist dance project; a web site and social media postings; high profile speakers; a local speaker's series; and a publication. These public events and projects will address specific social issues, will serve as case studies for the exploring larger concepts, and will ground the theoretical context in actual practice.</p><p>"Ultimately, we want this research to contribute to a contemporary definition of liberal education and to better understand what is involved with creating participation and engagement in activist actions in today's society," says Mills.</p><p><em>This story first appeared in the May issue of the Legend. respect &ndash; and it wants everyone's voice to be heard.</p> <p>The inaugural event, a week titled, Show Respect, Get Respect at Your U, will be held at the U of L from Mar. 7-11 as the caucus looks to get the campus thinking about how we interact with one another, in classrooms, meeting rooms and as we walk down the hallways.<br> <br> "One of the things we've seen in the last 10 years is incredible growth here at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬," says <a href="http://zapp.uleth.ca/Applications/CampusDirec/users/hester.jiskoot" rel="nofollow">Dr. Hester Jiskoot</a>, Chair of the Gender and Diversity Caucus. "It's also grown in terms of diversity, and we thought this was a positive way to talk about that diversity. We want the conversation to focus not on tolerating one another but rather on respecting each other."</p> <p>The U of L campus is fertile ground for academic debate, and such debates often result in academic discovery. However, when the debate is held in an atmosphere of disrespect, nobody benefits.</p> <p>"Universities are places for academic freedom, but with that freedom comes a responsibility of making choices and accepting diversity of opinion," says Jiskoot. "You don't necessarily have to agree with someone exactly, but you still have to respect the other person's opinion, traditions, culture and lifestyle, just as much as you would your own."</p> <p>She explains that although there have been cases of discrimination/disrespect on campus, they are not interested in highlighting these specific instances, but rather want to address a "general feeling" among faculty members about issues of disrespect in U of L classrooms and meeting rooms. To stem such behaviour, Jiskoot says we need only look at our own Strategic Plan for guidance.</p> <p>"We want people to see this more as an opportunity to enrich their own lives through diversity. The insight he's gained from being on the front lines of that battle will form the basis of the lecture he'll deliver to a Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge audience during Global Justice Week, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.<br> <br> Neve will cap the week with his lecture, Economic Insecurity, National Insecurity: Don't Lose Sight of Human Rights. The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge <a href="http://www.ulsu.ca" rel="nofollow">Students' Union</a> (ULSU), in collaboration with the <a href="http://www.gsaulethbridge.ca/" rel="nofollow">Graduate Students' Association</a> (GSA) and <a href="http://lpirg.blogspot.com" rel="nofollow">Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group</a> (LPIRG), is hosting the three-day event. Neve's talk is Friday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m. in PE250.<br> <br> "The purpose is to raise awareness of the fact that we live in an unjust world," says Alex Mass&eacute;, ULSU VP Academic and organizer of the event. "It's so students living here, in the richest part of the world, don't take their position for granted."<br> <br> Within the last year, economic uncertainty has been on the minds of many, from governments to average citizens. Neve, the Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada since 2000 and member of the organization since 1985, says that can't take away our focus from human rights.<br> <br> "The message I want to convey is that we live in insecure times," Neve says. "We live in times of economic insecurity, especially in the last year."<br> <br> Because of this, human rights often get pushed to the back burner in times of economic distress. Amnesty International is trying to put human rights back into the forefront.<br> <br> Neve, who holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, a Bachelor of Laws Degree and a Master of Law Degree in International Human Rights Law, believes that security of any sort should be grounded in human rights.<br> <br> Amnesty International has long advocated for fair trials to ensure justice, the proper handling of prisoners in Afghanistan, as well as improvements to Immigration Security Certificates (a legal mechanism used by the Government of Canada to detain and deport non-citizens). According to Neve, there are currently five Security Certificate cases in Canada in which Amnesty International is involved in various ways.<br> <br> On the economic front, Amnesty International launched the "Demand Dignity" campaign, which looks at human rights violations that lead to and deepen poverty. This is a worldwide campaign that was launched in May. Neve explains that we don't often look at human rights in terms of poverty.<br> <br> Amnesty International also highlights the plight of Indigenous people in Canada, particularly with regard to women's issues and the role of the economy in deepening poverty.<br> <br> While Neve's presentation highlights Global Justice Week, a variety of other events will be taking place, including a talk by Joshua Key, author of The Deserter's Tale: The Story of an Ordinary Soldier Who Walked Away From the War in Iraq.<br> <br> Events begin Wednesday afternoon as U of L professors take the podium at Galileo's Gallery, beginning at 3 p.m. Dr. Kent Peacock of the Philosophy Department presents, Justice in a Hungry World; Dr. Patrick Wilson of the Anthropology Department presents, Fair Trade and Global Economic Injustice: Opportunities and Obstacles; and Bruce MacKay of Liberal Education presents, Genocide: Never Again or Always.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-company-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Company:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/company/amnesty-international-canada" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Amnesty International Canada</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/company/lethbridge-public-interest-research-group" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/galileos-gallery" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Galileo&#039;s Gallery</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge-students-union" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Students&#039;
