Leading RNA researchers to convene at U of L for RiboWest Conference

Leading investigators in the field of Ribonucleic acid (RNA) research are gathering at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, June 5-8, 2016, to attend the 12th Annual RiboWest Conference.

“RNA is an important biomolecule that is implicated in many diseases ranging from infections, to cancer and inherited diseases,” explains Dr. Hans-Joachim Wieden, the director of the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI). “But RNA can also serve in the diagnosis and therapy of many diseases and as a tool in bioengineering of cells to generate novel compounds."

The RiboWest Conference is an annual meeting of RNA researchers from western Canada and beyond.

“This meeting is an excellent opportunity for networking, establishing new collaborations and having fun in sharing our enthusiasm for RNA,” says Dr. Ute Wieden-Kothe, professor of chemistry & biochemistry at the U of L and a main conference organizer. “The focus this year will be on RNA and synthetic biology: new RNA technologies, as well as RNA in health & disease. We’re expecting over 80 attendees from 10 universities and five business enterprises.”

A pair of keynote speakers highlights this year’s conference, delivering talks that will be free and open to the public.

Dr. Adam Arkin, a professor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California Berkeley and co-director of BIOFAB: International Open Facility Advancing Biotechnology, will present on Monday, June 6 at 1:30 p.m. in PE275. His talk is titled, Discovery and Design of mRNA Determinants of Expression Control. Arkin was featured in Time Magazine as a future innovator.

Dr. Paul Lasko, a professor at McGill ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and a founding member of the Developmental Biology Research Institute (DBRI), will present on Tuesday, June 7 at 2:20 p.m. in PE275. His presentation is titled, Translational Control in the
Drosophila Germ Line. Lasko won the Young Scientist Award of the Genetics Society of Canada in 1998 and its Award of Excellence in 2004.

Stephen Rader of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Northern British Columbia organized the first RiboWest Conference in 2005. Since 2008, the U of L’s Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) hosts the event every second year.

Prestigious RNA research conference coming to U of L

Leading investigators in the emerging field of Ribonucleic acid (RNA) research – including a Gairdner Foundation International Award recipient – are gathering at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, June 18-21, 2014, for one of Canada’s most prestigious conferences.

Gairdner Award winner, Dr. Joan Steitz, will give the conference's keynote address on Wednesday, June 18.

RiboWest 2014, now in its 10th year, is attracting experts in one of the fastest growing fields in the life sciences. With implications for many diseases, our understanding of evolution, as well as biotechnological applications, RNA research has enormous economic potential.

The U of L’s Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) is hosting the conference, which will take place at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Lethbridge campus and includes sessions in Waterton.

“The RNA research field has moved dramatically over the past decade,” says Dr. Ute Wieden-Kothe, a conference organizer and member of ARRTI. “RNA research touches so many vital areas related to quality of life including health, agriculture and environment. Every two or three years an RNA researcher is winning a Nobel prize.”

RNA is a key molecule that impacts health (including human health) and is vital for living beings. RNA takes the genetic information found within DNA and kick-starts essential functions (like creating proteins) at the cellular level.

The conference is expected to attract 100 to 150 researchers and students – including 40 principal researchers.

One of the highlights of the conference will be a keynote presentation by Gairdner award winner Dr. Joan Steitz (Wednesday, June 18, 3:10 p.m. in PE275) – a Yale researcher who is a pioneer in the RNA field. Dr. Steitz’s presentation is open to the public.

While the RNA research field is making a global impact, the U of L is being recognized as a centre of excellence in Western Canada and beyond. ARRTI, established in 2012 to facilitate RNA research and training excellence at the U of L, has reflected the institution’s maturation in the field. Additionally, the U of L was recently awarded the Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures Bioengineering Chair (ARRTI Director Dr. H.J. Wieden) and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is currently using a Campus Alberta Innovation Program Chair to recruit additional expertise to the ARRTI membership. U of L students, through the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition, have excelled on the world stage with RNA projects.

Dr. Stephen Rader organized the first RiboWest Conference in 2005 at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, B.C. Since 2008, the annual conference alternates between Prince George and Lethbridge.

Young scientists on campus for SCI-FUSION 2014

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is proud to be the host and presenting sponsor of SCI-FUSION 2014, the Lethbridge Regional Science Fair & Science Olympics, Mar. 28-29 in the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ welcomes the opportunity to continue to engage youth in scientific discovery and is excited to offer a number of activities designed to further spark the curiosity of future scientists.

From Let's Talk Science hands-on activities to lab tours and keynote addresses, the U of L is excited to offer SCI-FUSION 2014 participants and family members a unique look at science education on campus.

The weekend begins with an opportunity for 30 parents of science fair participants to tour three of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s cutting-edge research laboratories that showcase the newest research institutes at the U of L.

“Parents will not only learn about the exciting science conducted at our institution and how it relates to their life and our society, but they will also directly experience where and how the experiments are conducted,” says Dr. Ute Wieden-Kothe, professor of chemistry and biochemistry. “This is a unique opportunity where we open our doors to let the public look at the heart of our research activities.”

On Saturday (9 to 11 a.m.), the Let’s Talk Science program takes over, allowing science fair participants and their siblings the opportunity to participate in a number of fun and exciting hands-on scientific activities. Everything from extracting DNA to building catapults and constructing play dough brains will be investigated as future scientists challenge themselves to explore new areas of science, discover unexpected phenomena and learn new experiments.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Dr. Locke Spencer will then deliver the fair’s keynote address at 11 a.m. in PE250. Spencer (MSc ’05, PhD ’09), a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Experimental Astrophysics, completed his master’s degree at the U of L and was the first graduate of its Earth, Space and Physical Science PhD program. He works closely with Dr. David Naylor and participated extensively in the activities associated with the Herschel/SPIRE instrument.

“As a leading Canadian university, we take the responsibility of furthering scientific discovery very seriously,” says U of L President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon. “We strive to ignite a passion and curiosity for science in our community and by hosting activities such as SCI-FUSION 2014 and last year’s Canada-Wide Science Fair, we are hopefully sparking those interests in our youth. 5 Questions with Dr. Ute Wieden-Kothe

Dr. Ute Wieden-Kothe joined theDepartment of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 2006 after completing her PhD in biochemistry at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Witten/Herdecke, Germany. Her research focuses on RNA (ribonucleic acid), an important molecule in life that resembles our genetic information, DNA.

Wieden-Kothe is particularly interested in understanding the complex functions of RNA in the cell which go far beyond encoding information. In particular, she investigates the formation of the cellular protein factories that are composed of RNAs and proteins. Wieden-Kothe is a member of the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI), and every second year organizes the RiboWest Conference, which attracts hundreds of RNA researchers from across Canada. Her research is funded by NSERC, Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions and CFI.

Together with enthusiastic colleagues in the sciences and a number of science graduate and undergraduate students, Wieden-Kothe established the Let's Talk Science program in 2010 and now serves as the program's faculty supervisor.

What first piqued your interest in your research discipline?

In biochemistry, we are investigating the molecular basis of life. In high school, I was absolutely stunned when I learned that we understand perfectly how glucose is broken down in our bodies to provide us with energy. I was deeply impressed that we can follow the fate of each atom of glucose until it is converted to water and carbon dioxide while ATP, the cell's fuel, is formed. It is amazing that science allows us to comprehend the world around us on such a detailed level. The idea fascinates me that by precisely understanding cellular processes, we might ultimately be able to address diseases at their roots, i.e. at their molecular causes, instead of "fixing" the symptoms of a disease.

How is your research applicable in the "real world"?

My research group studies the early steps of forming large machines in the cell, called ribosomes, which ultimately produce all proteins. Interestingly, ribosomes are composed of both proteins and RNAs which are intricately intertwined. By unravelling the assembly of RNAs and proteins, we want to obtain a better understanding of the formation of protein factories. Conducting this basic research is important for the real world in two aspects.

First, these protein factories are essential for rapidly growing cancer cells. Understanding how they are built will ultimately help to inhibit this process in cancer cells and allow us to find novel targets for cancer therapy. At the same time, it is our goal to identify the molecular cause of genetic diseases affecting formation of these protein factories. Second, we are learning how to construct novel molecular machines from RNA and proteins with unlimited functions and applications in nanobiotechnology, including nanomedicine.

What is the greatest honour you have received in your career?

I have received a couple of nice awards, such as the Minerva Mentoring Award and the CIHR Synapse Mentorship Award; however, celebrating students' successes together and seeing a student mature and grow is the greatest honour I can receive. It always fills me with joy when I observe how a student, who didn't quite know where he or she wanted to go, finds a passion and goal in research, science outreach or in teaching. Likewise, I am incredibly proud to help students push their boundaries, take on challenges and achieve more than they ever thought possible. I am at the university because of and for the students, and I am very happy when I can make a difference for these young people.

How important are students to your research endeavours?

Students are at the heart of my research program. Biochemistry is a highly collaborative and laboratory-intensive field where many sophisticated experiments have to be performed. This requires a team approach. Also as biochemical processes are often complex, we need year-round thorough discussions of all aspects of the question under study. The daily interaction with my students is thus the most important aspect of my research. I stop by the lab every couple hours to look at data, and every day I am sitting down with at least one student to have in-depth discussions. These conversations with my students are inspiring, creative, thorough and incredibly rewarding.

I am grateful every day to have a fabulous group of students in my research lab ranging from undergraduate to master's and PhD graduate students.

If you had unlimited funds, which areas of research would you invest?

First of all, I would support all areas of basic research to allow all of us to follow our imagination, to be curious and creative and to explore new ideas. The chances are very good that this basic knowledge will be useful in the long term. So many of our current technologies are based on such research in the past where nobody could envision today's applications.

Second, I would support all areas of science outreach to bridge the gap between research and the general public, in particular the next generation. We need to give children and youth the tools to expand their horizons, to better understand the world, to be confident to ask questions and to search for answers.
