Play Right Prize winner, Avery Raine, delves into the fascinating life of Albert Einstein’s first wife Mileva Marić

Psychology and dramatic arts student Avery Raine is the winner of the 2022 Play Right Prize competition. Raine’s play, Relativity, Etc., is an imagined rendition of the life of one of the true icons of the 20th century.

Raine was honoured along with second and third-place winners Carter Debusschere and Achilles Friesen. Since 2008, Terry Whitehead (BA ’94) has been inspiring future playwrights through the Play Right Prize, awarding $2,500 annually to student playwrights and highlighting the winning entries at a public play reading.

For the winning script, Raine focuses on Albert Einstein’s first wife, Mileva Marić. She explores the tangled family dynamics of their sons, Hans and Eduard, and ruminates on the life that could have been for their daughter Lieserl, as she is suspected to have died of scarlet fever before the age of two.

“I looked more into Mileva’s life, and originally, it was just going to be about her. I wasn't going to focus on their kids as much, but there was so much there,” says Raine. “I'm very interested in Canadian feminist theatre, so that was a big part of wanting to tell Mileva’s story. I want it to be about her, but as it went on, it became about her and her children.”

Raine’s submission was praised by the jurors of the prize for its excellent composition, its lyrical take on ancestry and legacy and its unique perspective on mental health. This is Raine’s second win in the competition, having received the third-place prize in 2021. Raine receives $1,500 for her win this year and dramaturgical support to develop her script further. A reading of her play will take place at ULethbridge in the fall.

Winning second prize is dramatic arts student Carter Debusschere for his submission, Pressure Drop. Loosely based on a real-life air crash, Debusschere’s play uses an imaginatively crafted structure to tell a compelling story in a theatrically mature and innovative way. He utilizes an expressionist style that puts readers in the mind of the plane operator, who faces their demons while in the air.

“The main dramatic convention is that the play works through memories,” says Debusschere. “Essentially, in these final moments of consciousness as the plane is going down, the lead character is able to go back to any specific memory in his past and relive it as if he was there.”

“I was very surprised, pleased and honoured to have won. Two very close friends of mine are the first and third place winners, so getting to share this honour with them has been very gratifying,” he adds.

The jurors had especially high praise for the way the high stakes plot line engages the audience from the intriguing beginning to the shocking conclusion. Debusschere receives $750 for his submission and will also receive dramaturgical support from a member of the adjudicating jury.

The third prize goes to Achilles Friesen, a dramatic arts student minoring in philosophy. Their philosophy background shines within their play, So Long, which explores three young lost souls and the limbo-like state they find themselves in, tackling existential questions related to death, mortality and the afterlife.

For Friesen, they based the characters off of themself during a time of significant change in their life, highlighting the importance of genderqueer characters in play writing.“On top of educating people about philosophy and what it looks like in an artistic realm, it's also important to bring in all the genderqueer students and show them that there's roles for them here,” says Friesen. “I'm making sure I have that genderqueer element in everything I do. I feel like a lot of people have very similar struggles that these three characters have.”

The jury notes that Friesen’s characters, reminiscent of Pirandello and Camus, are carefully crafted to challenge these existential questions with a philosophical punch that will keep viewers thinking long after the ending. Friesen receives $250 for their play and dramaturgical support from the jury.

The 2021 prize went to dramatic arts student Jessica Syratt, who presented her play at a virtual reading last year.

The 2022 Play Right Prize jury is made up of Drama Faculty members Dr. Shelley Scott and Dave Smith, as well as Trevor Rueger from Alberta Playwright’s Network, who will coordinate dramaturgical support for the second and third place winners.

Scott named interim dean for Faculty of Fine Arts

Dr. Shelley Scott (BA ’86) has been named Interim Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts for a nine-month term, effective October 1, 2021, and running through to June 30, 2022.

Dr. Shelley Scott currently teaches theatre history, Canadian theatre, dramatic literature and theatre theory.

Scott currently teaches theatre history, Canadian theatre, dramatic literature and theatre theory and has been at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge since 1998. She graduated from the U of L with great distinction, majoring in drama, and was awarded the Faculty of Arts & Science gold medal as well as the Charles S. Noble award for student leadership.

Scott earned her master’s and PhD from the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto and taught at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Guelph before returning to Lethbridge in 1998. She was Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts from 2008-2011. In 2013, she was promoted to professor and served a three-year term (2013-2016) as associate dean for the Faculty of Fine Arts.

“We’re extremely pleased to draw on Shelley’s talents as an instructor and administrator to fill this vital role over the next nine months,” says Dr. Erasmus Okine, provost and vice-president (academic).

Over the course of her academic career, Scott has been an active researcher and publisher, specifically studying Canadian women playwrights. She has published on playwrights such as Joan MacLeod, Ann-Marie MacDonald and Linda Griffiths in academic journals such as Modern Drama, Canadian Theatre Review, Theatre Research in Canada, Resources for Feminist Research,and the British Journal of Canadian Studies.

Scott, who has directed numerous plays for the Department of Drama, has also published two books, The Violent Woman as a New Theatrical Character Type: Cases from Canadian Drama and Nightwood Theatre: A Woman's Work is Always Done. She is a member in the Canadian Association for Theatre Research and served as president from 2008-2012.

“I am excited to take on this new role for the Faculty of Fine Arts and to work with my extraordinary faculty colleagues, dedicated staff and incredible students, with a new, university-wide voice,” says Scott of her appointment.

5 Questions with Dr. Shelley Scott

Shelley Scott (BA '86) is an associate professor in the Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts. She served as the department Chair from 2008-2011 and was the president of the Canadian Association for Theatre Research (CATR) from 2008-2012. Shelley teaches courses in theatre history, Canadian theatre, theatre theory and dramatic literature.

Scott has published two books: The Violent Woman as a New Theatrical Character Type: Cases from Canadian Drama (2007, The Edwin Mellen Press) and Nightwood Theatre: A Woman's Work is Always Done (2010, Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Press).

What first piqued your interest in your research discipline?

When I was an undergrad here at the U of L (1982-86), I acted in many of the department's productions and thought of myself as a theatre practitioner. I spent some time after university working for the Alberta Status of Women Action Committee (ASWAC), which, at that time, was the provincial feminist lobbying organization, and thought of myself as a feminist activist. But when I started graduate work at the Drama Centre in Toronto, I found the right combination: as a theatre scholar, I could study and write about plays by women and make my contribution to both feminism and Canadian theatre within the academy, the place I feel most at home.

Dr. Shelley scott investigates the realm of women's theatre.

I now occasionally direct plays for the department, which in turn feeds my thinking about theatre and sparks ideas for publications. For example, after directing Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), I delivered a conference paper about my analysis of that play; that paper was published in an academic journal, which was later included in an anthology of articles about Canadian productions of Shakespeare, and then finally formed a portion of one of the chapters in my book about Nightwood Theatre, where the play first premiered.

How is your research applicable in "the real world"?

In terms of the publication, a lot of the value is simply in
recording and preserving theatre activity, which is, by its very nature easily lost. A company such as Toronto's Nightwood Theatre, which has been around since 1979, serves as an incredible reflection, not only of all the plays that have been produced and of the artists that have worked on them, but also of the changes in feminist thought and the social realities that shape a women's theatre company.

What is the greatest honour you have received in your career?

Serving as the president of the Canadian Association for Theatre Research for four years has been a great honour. CATR is the national organization for theatre scholars and practitioners: it's a veritable "who's who" of Canadian theatre ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, and it's a great privilege to consider these people my friends and colleagues. Our annual conferences are packed with the very best scholarship, and I always leave inspired and energized about the state of our discipline.

How important are students to your research endeavours?

I love the opportunities I have to direct because they allow me to interact with students in a different way, outside of the classroom and in an arena where they are contributing their creativity and ideas to a collaborative effort in a really interactive environment. Because I teach the history and theory courses for the department, I get to know the students in an intellectual and academic way, which is very exciting and rewarding. But the chance to work on a play together helps me to see other sides of them (and they see other sides of me!) and that in turn informs both my teaching and my perspective on writing about theatre. I think that, in the Fine Arts in particular, the interrelationship between teaching and research is fundamental.

If you had unlimited funds, which areas of research would you invest?

On a personal level, I would love to travel and see more theatre and learn about women's theatre companies all around the world. I am going to a women playwright's conference in Stockholm this summer, and that's the kind of international event I'd like to be able to explore more often. In terms of creative activity, I would build a new Fine Arts building here on campus, one with all the fabulous theatre facilities and studio space we could imagine – plus accessible parking!

A public reception will be held in the Markin Hall Atrium on Wednesday, Mar. 16, beginning at 3 p.m.

Uncommon Women a show of strength

The 1970s proved to be a very important time for women and the play, Uncommon Women and Others, captures this transformative era.

Showing Oct. 19-23, 8 p.m. nightly at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre, Uncommon Women and Others by Wendy Wasserstein, examines the changing social dynamics of the age.

"The play takes place during an era of tremendous change for women, but the fundamental theme of students figuring out their place in the world remains relevant and recognizable today," says Dr. Shelley Scott, director.

This often funny, reflective play transports audiences to the 1970s to share the struggles, challenges and joys of five independently uncommon women.

Written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Wendy Wasserstein, this compelling drama opens as the women meet at a restaurant in 1978. A flashback transports the audience back six years and shows the women while they were students at a prestigious, all-female college, forming the friendships and making the choices that shape their destinies.

From the set, designed by Donal Atkinson, to the costumes, designed by U of L drama major Candace Van Osch, the production explores a time when clothes and furnishings had a distinctly original style.

"The entire production is an expression of such an important time for women," says Scott. "It captures the essence of that time, in which the women's movement was changing women's lives. This play explores these themes and also speaks about a coming-of-age that all students go through."

"Wasserstein was often referred to as the female Neil Simon," adds Scott. "Artistic Director, Lincoln Center Theatre, Andre Bishop, remarks that all of Wasserstein's plays revolve around intelligent, attractive, educated, uncommon women who, while attempting to deal with their fears and disappointments, manage to define and redefine who they are."

Challenging, engrossing and engaging describe the 2010/2011 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Fine Arts theatre season.

From classical to controversial, the plays strike a balance between academic challenges and audience appeal.

The first show of the season, Uncommon Women and Others by Wendy Wasserstein, is directed by Dr. Shelley Scott and appears in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre Oct. 19 to 23. Set in 1978, five women reunite in a restaurant to evaluate where their lives have led them. The action flashes back six years to when they met as students at a prestigious, all-female college, formed friendships and made the choices that shaped their destinies.

Director Jay Whitehead then tackles the fascinating and emotionally challenging play, Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind (translated by Jonathan Franzen), which runs Nov. 24 to 28. Teenagers Melchior, Moritz, Wendla and their young friends are experiencing sexual awakenings and are increasingly curious about their bodies, each other, masturbation and more. Their teachers and parents, respectable adults, fight to keep these young people on the straight and narrow, often with hilarious and sometimes disastrous results.

The Seagull by Anton Chekhov is directed by Richard Epp, and appears in the David Spinks Theatre from Feb. 15 to 19. Konstantin loves his mother, but he's jealous of her fame as an actress and depressed about his lack of success as a playwright. He also despises the celebrated young writer who is living with his mother and seems to have captured the attention of the girl he adores. On a Russian country estate, passions abound and idealism is challenged by triviality in this absorbing play from the master of comic realism.

The season ends with William Shakespeare's Richard III. Widely regarded as Shakespeare's most important play, this eternal classic is directed by Doug MacArthur and appears on stage Mar. 22 to 26. On a road paved with blood, treachery and seduction, Richard's tumultuous attempt to claim the throne of England for his own is fraught with lies, deception and murder.

To experience each of these unforgettable productions, season ticket purchases include all four productions for the price of three. Individual tickets are priced at $15 for regular admission and $10 for seniors/students. Season Tickets are $45 regular and $30 for seniors/students.

All tickets are available at the U of L Box office or by calling 403-329-2616. Closed for the summer, the U of L Box Office reopens on Sept. 13. Season tickets are on sale until opening night of the first production.
