U of L to host Winter School on remote sensing of potentially habitable planets

Mankind has been searching the night sky for millennia, pondering the nature of the universe. With technological developments over the last few years, scientists now know much more about the universe and the existence of other Earth-like planets.

Sharing the knowledge behind the latest techniques for remote sensing of exoplanets, or planets that orbit a different star, is the idea behind this week’s Winter School on Remote Sensing of Exoplanets. The event runs Thursday and Friday and more information is available on the Winter School schedule.

Dr. Adriana Predoi-Cross, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, is also the research co-ordinator for the NSERC CREATE AMETHYST program that is sponsoring the event, along with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Tecterra.

“I thought it would be very instructive for the students to find out about how the exploration of exoplanets and the characterization of their atmospheres has evolved in the past decade,” she says. “I hope that by the end of this Winter School, the students will not only have an overview of the new research trends but may also get interested in pursuing aspects of this research.”

Students, the majority of them graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, will learn about the methods being used to search for and detect exoplanets. One of the speakers is the U of L’s Dr. Locke Spencer, who will talk about the key science and technology developments needed for the next generation of astrophysics experiments.

“Some of the key questions in modern astrophysics, including areas such as star and planet formation, are waiting on improved observations in the far-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum to allow our scientific understanding to advance,” says Spencer. “This requires the integration and development of a variety of technologies and observation techniques involving contributions from many research groups across the globe."

NASA’s Kepler mission was launched in 2009 with the express purpose of searching for Earth-like exoplanets. After 16 months of observation, scientists had about 2,300 planet candidates.

“Almost 1,700 of these have been confirmed as exoplanets. Because of their recent discovery, there’s a flurry of scientific activity around them, trying to explore the composition, the photo-chemistry and the evolution of these extra solar planets. There are different methods that are used to observe these extra solar planets and some of the lecturers will be focused on discussing the different techniques to investigate exoplanets,” says Predoi-Cross.

The search for other habitable planets is definitely on, although progress may not be as fast as some would like. Technological developments have enabled the collection of vast amounts of data, such as their size, orbit and the possible composition of their atmospheres, that needs further analysis.

“Some of the exoplanets that have been discovered are in what scientists call the habitable zone where it’s possible to have liquid water on the surface. There is one planet called Kepler 22B that is a potential for the habitable zone,” she says.

Achievements of women in physics celebrated at international conference

Women are still a minority in the field of physics but every few years they come together from all parts of the world to celebrate their achievements, exchange ideas and discuss ways to address the gender gap.

Drs. Adriana Predoi-Cross and Arundhati Dasgupta, both professors in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, were among more than 200 scientists from 52 countries to attend the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) fifth annual International Conference on Women in Physics (ICWIP) at Wilfred Laurier ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Waterloo, Ont.

Predoi-Cross and Dasgupta, both part of the organizing committee, planned and prepared for the conference for two years. Held in early August, this year marked the first time the conference has been held in North America.

In addition to celebrating the achievements of women in physics throughout the world, the participants attended workshops, built networks with colleagues around the world, gained skills for career success and formed regional working groups to advance women in physics.

“The conference increased the scientific visibility of women doing physics research and thereby put a spotlight on women’s contributions to physics internationally,” says Predoi-Cross.

The conference workshops focused on topics such as gender studies in physics, improving the working environment, physics education, cultural perceptions and bias in scientific practice, and professional development and leadership for women in physics.

"I believe the positive effect of ICWIP 2014 will go beyond the physics community and will have a strong effect on women leaders in all fields of science and technology," says Predoi-Cross.

“Apart from the scientific excellence of these amazing women scientists, the story of their personal journeys was also shared with the conference participants,” says Dasgupta.

Melissa Franklin, an experimental particle physicist at Harvard ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, talked about the difficulties she experienced trying to find a lab of her own, while Patience Mthunzi, a senior scientist in the National Laser Centre at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa, spoke about being mocked because of her Zulu background. Sabine Stanley, a physics professor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto, talked about the benefits of having a spouse who is happy to follow her wherever her career takes her.

Women make up less than 15 per cent of physicists in the world yet more than 90 per cent of those who attended the conference were women.

“It was clear that the scarcity of women in physics, especially in leadership positions, is a problem for many countries,” says Predoi-Cross. “Women, men, institutions, and governments need to work together to encourage, educate, recruit, retain, advance, and promote more girls and women in physics and other science and technology professions.”

To that end, conference participants unanimously approved a resolution that will be presented at the next General Assembly of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics in October 2014.

U of L researchers combine to earn $1.8 million in NSERC funding

A total of 12 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers will receive funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) this year, enabling future U of L discoveries in a variety of areas including neuroscience, biological sciences and chemistry and biochemistry.

Dr. Gerlinde Metz is receiving NSERC funding for her project, Experience-dependent Compensation and Brain Plasticity, one of 12 U of L researchers to receive an NSERC grant this year.

Canada’s Minister of State (Science and Technology), the Honourable Ed Holder, made the national funding announcement earlier today at Western ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in London, Ont.

U of L researchers receiving Discovery Grant funding include: Dr. Alice Hontela (biological sciences); Dr. Olga Kovalchuk (biological sciences); Dr. Locke Spencer (physics and astronomy); Dr. Theresa Burg (biological sciences); Dr. Lawrence Flanagan (biological sciences); Dr. Ute Kothe (chemistry and biochemistry); Dr. Paul Hazendonk (chemistry and biochemistry); Dr. Gongbing Shan (kinesiology and physical education); Dr. Daya Gaur (mathematics and computer science); Dr. Andrew Iwaniuk (neuroscience); Dr. Gerlinde Metz (neuroscience); and Dr. Adriana Predoi-Cross (physics and astronomy).

Iwaniuk will also receive funding through the Discovery Accelerator Supplement program.

Additionally, Dr. Hans Joachim Wieden (chemistry and biochemistry) is receiving funding under the Research Tools and Instruments Grants Program.

In total, U of L researchers will receive approximately $1.8 million in funding over the next five years.

“NSERC funding is an important support that will help these very worthy U of L researchers move their respective programs forward, which in turn will benefit our communities in terms of economic growth and quality of life,” says Acting Vice-President (Research), Dr. Lesley Brown. “Further, these funds over time have played a critical role in the U of L’s rapid transition from a primarily undergraduate institution to one of Canada’s leading research universities of its size.”

NSERC also announced recipients of its graduate scholarships and fellowship awards. Adela Gherga (mathematics and computer science) and Mark Hornsby (biological sciences) are receiving graduate scholarships while Jenni Karl (neuroscience) is receiving a post-doctoral fellowship award.

NSERC grants aim to develop, attract and retain the world’s most talented researchers at Canadian universities who are working in a multitude of scientific and engineering disciplines.
