Creative design students from across Canada can take advantage of the first ever partnership between Olds College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Beginning with the Fall 2015 Semester, the new agreement provides for an easy transfer from Olds College’s Apparel Technology diploma program to a degree program in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts.

This innovative two-plus-two opportunity enables college students, who meet program criteria, to transfer to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and receive two years of credit for their previous studies at the College. These students enroll in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s post-diploma Bachelor of Fine Arts – Dramatic Arts program with a major in Technical/Design and finish their last two years of the degree program at the U of L.

“Consistent with the vision of Campus Alberta, this direct transfer agreement to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Bachelor of Fine Arts is a great example of simplifying our students’ transition to university,” says Teri McKinnon, Calgary Campus Manager, Olds College Fashion Institute. “The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge continues our students’ access to enhanced, personalized teaching from instructors with extensive experience in performing arts.”

At the U of L, Technical/Design majors combine academic studies with an immersive approach that prepares graduates for the ever-changing world of theatre, whether they want to work with established theatre companies or on their own artist plans.

Starting this fall, the agreement provides for an easy transfer from the college’s Fashion Design and Sustainable Production diploma program into a degree program in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts.

The two-plus-two opportunity enables college students, who meet program criteria, to transfer to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and receive two years of credit for their previous work at the college. These students will enrol in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s post-diploma Bachelor of Fine Arts – Dramatic Arts program with a major in Technical/Design and finish their last two years of the degree program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Upon graduation, students have two credentials – a diploma from the College and a degree from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

The college’s Fashion Design and Sustainable Production is a one-of-a-kind program providing students with skills and experience needed to shape the apparel industry. The sustainability-focused curriculum provides valuable hands-on training and experience through research projects and creative challenges. After four semesters of courses, students have the option of participating in a 200-hour intensive internship, an unrivaled opportunity in western Canada.

“Our strong partnership with the university provides valuable educational opportunities for our students,” says Dennis Sheppard, Dean, Centre of Applied Management, Lethbridge College. “This two-plus-two agreement is an example of how the college is working collaboratively with a partner just across the river to lead and transform education in Alberta.”

Although this is the first agreement involving the Faculty of Fine Arts’ programs, Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge have several other two-plus-two program opportunities including:

· Agriculture Sciences Diploma – Plant and Soil Science or Animal Science into the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Studies

· Business Administration – General Business Diploma, Management Diploma, Marketing Diploma, or Accounting Diploma into the Bachelor of Management

· Child and Youth Care Diploma articulation into the Post-Diploma Bachelor of Health Sciences – Addictions Counselling (Extended)

· Computer Information Technology Diploma into the Bachelor of Management or Bachelor of Science - Computer Science

· Environmental Assessment and Restoration Diploma into the Bachelor of Science – Environmental Science

· Renewable Resource Management Diploma into the Bachelor of Science – Environmental Science

· Geomatics Engineering Technology Diploma into the Bachelor of Science with a concentration in Geographical Information Science

World-class violist to play fundraising concert

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Fine Arts is proud to present world-renowned viola player and honorary degree recipient Dr. Rivka Golani (LLD’13) at the Faculty Artists and Friends Scholarship Concert on Friday, December 6, 2013.

Golani is widely regarded as one of the finest violists in the world and has performed with orchestras around the globe.

Sponsored in part by the U of L Alumni Association, the concert is in honour of Joe Crowshoe Sr. – a highly respected Elder and cultural leader in southern Alberta. Proceeds from this event will support the U of L’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit Bursary.

The event will be held at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall and begins at 8 p.m.

Golani is widely regarded as one of the finest violists in the world and has performed with orchestras around the globe. Several of her albums are considered landmarks of classical music recording. As a teacher, she holds professorships at the Trinity College of Music in London and the Birmingham Conservatoire. She has also taught at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto and the Royal Academy of Music.

Golani received an honorary degree from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge earlier this year, in part for the significant role she has played in encouraging the appreciation of classical music in southern Alberta. In addition, she was the co-founder and music director of the Fort Macleod International Music Festival, which ran in cooperation with the Empress Theatre.

“This will be an exceptional performance and a tremendous opportunity for music lovers in southern Alberta,” says Dr. Edward Jurkowski, dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts. “We are extremely proud of our affiliation with Dr. Golani and are very grateful that she is dedicating so much time for the benefit of our students.”

In addition to performing at the scholarship concert, Golani will be teaching a music master class for strings and guitar students on Wednesday, December 4.

Tickets for the Faculty Artists & Friends Scholarship Concert are $70, $65 for seniors or alumni. These tickets include a $50 tax receipt. Student tickets are available for $15. They are available at the U of L Box Office (www.uleth.ca/tickets) or by calling 403-329-2616.

Dr. Brian Black (Music), Dr. Edward Jurkowski (Music) and Dr. Emily Luce (New Media) all received internal Social Sciences Humanities Research Council grants valued at $4,500 each.

U of L alumnus Christian Darbyshire (BMgt '99) was named one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40™. As a partner with tinePublic Inc., Darbyshire has been instrumental in securing names such as Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Lance Armstrong and Arnold Schwarzenegger for educational speaking engagements in Canada. It is the second consecutive year that the U of L has had someone recognized by the Globe and Mail's Top 40 Under 40™ program. Dr. Olga Kovalchuk was honoured last year.

Joshua Seerattan, a U of L student from the Faculty of Management, and Courtney Lockhart from the Faculty of Arts and Science, have been awarded a $5,500 USD grant from Alberta Advanced Education and Technology for their participation in The Washington Centre – Alberta Internship Program for summer 2011. Both students will spend six weeks in Washington, D.C. Seerattan will be participating in the Global Trade and Regional Integration program, while Lockhart will take part in the International Affairs program.

Dagmar Dahle's (Art) work is included in the exhibition ANIMAL, at Museum London in Ontario.

Laura Lavigne (BA '06), the co-ordinator, International Programs & Exchange, in the International Centre for Students was awarded a full scholarship ($3,000) to participate in the International Educators Training Program this summer at Queen's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Denton Fredrickson (Art) has made the long list for the 2011 Sobey Art Award, Canada's pre-eminent prize for contemporary Canadian art. Following a three-month nomination process, the Curatorial Panel announced the 25 artists vying for this year's award.

Music major Matt Groenheide (percussionist) won the Young Artist Competition presented by the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. In addition to a cash prize, he receives a guest solo spot with the LSO during their 2011-2012 Masters Series.

Marg McKeen (Office of Research and Innovation Services) is retiring this summer after 33 years of service to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. She began her career at the U of L as an Academic Secretary in the Department of Sociology and was hired by the Office of Research Services in 1986. Since that time, she has served in a number of roles and worked with numerous faculty members and students. A retirement reception will be held on Wednesday, June 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Markin Hall Atrium. A public reception will be held in the Markin Hall Atrium on Wednesday, Mar. 16, beginning at 3 p.m.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 6, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballrooms. A total of 83 employees who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service, and 18 retiring employees will be honoured at the event.
