PUBlic Professor Series spawns a spinoff

Although Faculty of Arts & Science professors could be labelled serious, scholarly types by day, the occasion of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s 50th anniversary has given them a reason to have a little fun while still imparting their knowledge.

The PUBlic Professor Series: 5-Minute Edition, is designed to showcase the diversity of research interests within the Faculty in an entertaining format. Each of 10 professors will have five minutes and a maximum of 15 PowerPoint slides to do a presentation on their research. The slides will automatically advance every 20 seconds, requiring the speaker to keep pace.

“After five minutes is over, I’m cutting them off,” says Dr. Kevin McGeough (BA ’96), a U of L geography professor and moderator of the event. “That makes it fun because there’s a kind of panicked element to the presentation. It’s especially fun for professors because we’re not known for being concise in our comments. That lightning-fast approach makes it interesting for people to watch.”

The professors who have agreed to participate include Dr. Jay Gamble (English), Dr. René Barendregt (Geography), Dr. Sergio Pellis (Neuroscience), Dr. Ute Kothe (Biochemistry), Dr. Omar Rodriguez (Modern Languages), Dr. Jennifer Copeland (Kinesiology), Dr. Janay Nugent (History), Dr. Locke Spencer (Physics), Dr. Maura Hanrahan (Native American Studies) and Dr. Hillary Rodrigues (Religious Studies).

“One of the things we’re looking for is that these research presentations be of interest to the public and to people who aren’t specialists in the area of expertise,” says McGeough. “That matches the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s liberal education approach where we have all sorts of different disciplinary backgrounds and we all contribute to a larger conversation.”

McGeough has some experience with the format from a session he participated in at an event hosted by the U of L Faculty Association. He has a few tips for his colleagues who’ll be participating.

“Talk quickly, have a sense of what you want to say before you get up there and pick your slides well. If you lose track of where you are, good slides can cue you to get back on track or find a new track to go down,” says McGeough.

The PUBlic Professor Series: 5-Minute Edition is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. in B756 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall. McGeough says the event will be informal and people are welcome to drop in on the session even after it’s started.

“We especially hope that alumni will come and experience this event. This will be a fun way to spend the afternoon,” says McGeough, adding everyone is welcome to attend.

U of L humanities researchers secure federal grants

Four ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge professors have been awarded more than $300,000 in research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

“This year’s SSHRC results reflect a high standard of excellence amongst our humanists and social scientists, of which we can be rightly proud,” says Dr. Claudia Malacrida, associate vice-president research. “These researchers’ projects touch on vital aspects of cultural, civil and social life and each of them richly deserves this recognition.”

Dr. Abdie Kazemipur, a U of L sociology professor, has been awarded more than $138,000 over four years for a research project called After the Ottawa Attack. Kazemipur will examine the integration of Muslims in Canada in the wake of recent terrorist attacks in Canada by Muslim converts. Dr. Fangfang Li, a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge psychology professor, has received a grant worth more than $28,000. She and several fellow researchers at the U of L want to ensure the public has access to correct information about child language learning and are organizing a conference that will bring the various academic disciplines involved in child language acquisition research and the public together. The conference, to be hosted on a rotating basis with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary, is planned to be an annual event. Check out the UNews website for more information.

Dr. Gloria Tian, an associate professor of finance at the U of L’s Calgary campus, and two fellow finance professors, will use their Insight Grant worth more than $94,000 to examine partnerships between corporations and the non-profit sector. Visit UNews to learn more about Tian’s project.

Dr. Hillary Rodrigues, a professor of Religious Studies, will investigate a growing component of the ‘spiritual but not religious’ group. The Modern Nondual Spirituality movement centres on the attainment of a key psychological realization where all conceptual dualities, especially those that distinguish the individual from the rest of reality, collapse. The movement hasn’t received much attention from religious scholars and Rodrigues plans to use his grant worth more than $43,000 to correct that situation. These grants will further knowledge in key areas of research that are of interest not only to ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, but also to professionals and the public.

Rodrigues to investigate modern nondual spirituality

Sociological studies show the number of those who call themselves ‘spiritual but not religious’ (SBNR) has been outpacing those who identify with mainstream religious traditions in Canada.

A subset of SBNR groups is the Modern Nondual Spirituality (MNS) movement. Eckhart Tolle, the movement’s high profile teacher, lives in Canada. His books, including The Power of Now and A New Earth, have sold millions of copies. Even so, religious scholars have largely ignored MNS.

“The academic literature is anemic,” says Dr. Hillary Rodrigues, a professor of Religious Studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. “MNS is often included in New Religious Movements or New Age religions but little effort has been made to distinguish it from other very different movements within those categories.”

Thanks to an Insight Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) worth more than $43,000, Rodrigues aims to rectify that situation.

“My goal is to focus on this fast-growing contemporary phenomenon at this crucial emergent stage using religious studies theories and methods,” says Rodrigues. “The MNS movement provides us with a rare opportunity to study what might be a growing and eventually significant religious movement.”

MNS centres on the attainment of a key psychological realization where all conceptual dualities, especially those that distinguish the individual from the rest of reality, collapse. This nondual spiritual liberation is seen as necessary to achieve inner peace, mental health, social tolerance and a host of other personal and communal needs.

Nondual approaches to spirituality aren’t new; they’ve been a part of Hinduism and Buddhism for millennia. However, in the 21st century, adherents of MNS don’t identify as Hindu or Buddhist. Rodrigues’ project will help clarify the characteristics of the MNS movement and perhaps provide clues about why people are increasingly opting for spirituality over religion.

By attending gatherings held by non-duality teachers around the world, Rodrigues plans to conduct free-flowing interviews with seekers in the movement to gain understanding of their motivations and experiences. He hopes to discern shared key characteristics among members. While his hunch is that those in the SBNR movement, estimated to be 30 to 40 per cent of the population in Canada, find the term ‘religion’ too constricting, his research project will verify if that’s correct.

The results of Rodrigues’ study of MNS will also be of interest to other disciplines such as health sciences, psychology, art and education.

The Centre for the Advancement of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CAETL) recently released an eight-part video series discussing the philosophy of education.

CAETL asks, what is your philosophy of education? What is the role of the instructor and of the student? Three ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty members discuss their views and passion for teaching and learning.

Featuring Dr. Robin Bright (Education), Dr. Ute Kothe (Chemistry & Biochemistry), and Dr. Hillary Rodrigues (Religious Studies), the weekly series begins Monday, Sept. 20 with, Discussion Video Series: Philosophy of Education Part I.

Rodrigues earns Teaching Chair position

Dr. Hillary Rodrigues, an internationally renowned religious studies scholar and a reseacher and professor of Religious Studies, has been awarded a Board of Governors Teaching Chair position.

The Board of Governors Teaching Chairs program reaffirms the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's commitment to provide inspirational teaching.

Dr. Hillary Rodrigues

Established in 2007, the teaching chair is awarded to a faculty member who demonstrates an ongoing commitment to teaching excellence and scholarship within the U of L community.

Rodrigues' publications include several books and articles on Indian Culture and Philosophy and the Social Scientific Study of Religion.

Aside from his distinguished career as an Religions studies scholar, Rodrigues' experience as a teacher has spanned the world. Prior to his career at post secondary, Dr. Rodrigues' taught grades 6-12 mathematics, science, and English in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan.

Recognized as a distinguished teaching award winner in 2000, Rodrigues has become an exemplar of teaching excellence at the U of L. Students often comment on his ability to inspire them through his informative, comprehensive, and thought-provoking classes.

He encourages students to understand different points of views and appreciate the the diversity of cultures they are studying. His classes demand the of highest standards while maintaining a positive and encouraging learning environment.

Outside of his own classroom, Rodrigues' commitment to teaching excellence is evident through his many years of service on numerous ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ teaching committees and involvement in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ teaching related activities.

As co-chair of the Centre for the Advancement of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CAETL) advisory council, Rodrigues has brought experience, leadership and a passion for teaching that has greatly contributed to the success of CAETL this past year.

Understanding religion - understanding people

Religion affects all of us, regardless of our personal beliefs. Lying at the core of human understanding, religion has, and in many instances, continues to both reflect and shape culture, politics and society.

The discipline of religious studies uses a variety of methodologies to try to make sense of what Dr. Hillary Rodrigues calls the "human religious response."
Focusing his research on Hindu religion, Rodrigues strives to address the fundamental, yet elusive responses to how people answer the big questions in their lives – Why are we here? What is the purpose and meaning of life? What happens when I die?

After completing his undergraduate degree in chemistry at McGill ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Rodrigues spent four years traveling in South America and Asia. It was during this time that he discovered his real passion and decided to pursue his academic career in religious studies.

"During my travels, I became more deeply interested in world culture and philosophical questions," explains Rodrigues. "I found religious studies to be an area where I could bring these interests together."

Rodrigues went on to receive a master's and PhD in religious studies from McMaster ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Hamilton before joining the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 1992.

"Tenure-track positions in religious studies are rare," says Rodrigues. "I was pleased to hear about an opening at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge because I was attracted to its relatively modest size and the prospect that I could contribute towards the development of the religious studies program here."

In addition to teaching and developing the religious studies program, Rodrigues has been working on a comprehensive study of a Hindu goddess named Durga. According to him, an inadequate amount of research has been conducted on Durga since gods have traditionally been the focus of study rather than goddesses.

"The idea of God being imagined as female is foreign to many of us in western society," Rodrigues explains. "When we think of goddesses we tend to think of them as part of ancient mythology. But goddesses are still widely worshipped in the Hindu tradition, and Durga is Hinduism's Great Goddess."

Durga's rich and complex mythology has captivated Rodrigues, and she has become his primary research focus. He has written a book entitled Ritual Worship of the Great Goddess in which he discusses an elaborate worship ritual that takes place each year in Durga's honour.

Currently, he is attempting to understand the various ways in which individuals draw empowerment from Durga.

Rodrigues conducts both textual and field-based research, using methodologies that stem from anthropology, sociology, and philosophy.

Although his research is focused on India, it has definite implications for Canadians.

"Since Canada is a multicultural society, my work on Durga will enable us to understand more about the religious and cultural values of some of our fellow citizens," Rodrigues emphasizes. "Such understanding, I hope, will diminish certain forms of prejudice and enable us to live with a greater tolerance and acceptance of, or even a connection with, each other's diversity."
