Community support helps establish endowed scholarship in honour of former dean Dr. Bhagwan Dua

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Arts & Science is pleased to announce the inaugural Wine & Dine Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner has raised over $80,000 in support of student scholarships.

Thanks to the generous support of donors, the Dr. Bhagwan Dua Memorial Scholarship has been endowed with enough funds to award two scholarships per year to students pursuing a degree from the Faculty of Arts & Science. One scholarship will be awarded to a first-year student while the other will be awarded to a continuing student.

“This was a spectacular event,” says Dr. Craig Cooper, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science, on the dinner that honoured former Dean and Professor Emeritus, Dr. Bhagwan Dua. “The room had a vibrant energy, demonstrating the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community’s passion and dedication to making education accessible to students, and the value it places on empowering students to unlock their potential.”

The investment is part of the U of L’s SHINE campaign and highlights the community’s involvement in supporting students and promoting opportunities for them to thrive while working to achieve their academic goals.

Raman Chohan, a student who was recruited by Dua on a trip to India, says his legacy will surely live in future generations of students.

“He believed in education, and that all have a right to an education,” says Chohan. “A scholarship in his honour is surely going to benefit continuing students and new students who come to the U of L. This is the best way to pay tribute to him and carry on his legacy, as he was a big believer that education can change your destiny. I am sure that he is looking down and smiling.”

Dr. Peter McCormick, a close friend and colleague of Dua, reminisces about his warm personality, and passion and commitment to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

“There can be no more appropriate way to honour Dua than through a scholarship for students in his beloved Faculty of Arts & Science, and there can be no better advice to the future recipients of this scholarship than to emulate his enthusiasm, his courtesy and his deep dedication to this wonderful institution.”

The Dua family is honoured by the spirit of the scholarship awards and how they reflect his love of education and the opportunities it can create.

“By establishing this scholarship in the name of Dr. Bhagwan Dua, you have made him a part of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge forever,” say Dua’s daughters, Mini and Manjula. “We, the Dua family, are very grateful for this immense honour and we know that Dad would have been very humbled by your generosity. We hope that the future recipients of this scholarship go on to great success in their chosen fields, and continue to serve their communities as Dad did.”

Jansen's devotion to political world, student engagement indicative of department

Dr. Harold Jansen has never been shy to profess his love for the political world, nor his desire to see the general populace more informed about and engaged by the democratic process.

It shaped his academic career, both as a student and then as a professor in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Department of Political Science. It is also why he carried great expectations for what the digital revolution of the late 1990s might do for the political process.

As the new Chair of the political science department, Harold Jansen sees great potential in the U of L being able to offer an experience like no other school.

“Democratic politics is so much about communication and here we were at the beginning of a communications revolution,” says Jansen, who on Thursday presented the latest PUBlic Professor Series lecture at Lethbridge City Hall. “We convey our demands through communications, governments communicate to us and we mobilize coalitions of support or opposition based on communication and persuasion. It all requires communication, so any changes to those technologies are profound.”

Jansen and his fellow political scientists were hopeful that with greater access to information and direct contact with politicians possible, digital technology would enrich the practice of democratic citizenship. As he discussed in his presentation, it is now 20 years later, digital technology is everywhere, and yet there are few signs of a democratic renaissance.

“I had this initial burst of optimism and I think fairly early on in the research I realized this wasn’t suddenly going to rejuvenate democracy,” he says.

Jansen has been a political junkie since he can remember, fondly recalling that, as a seven-year-old, he asked his dad what were the differences between Liberals and Conservatives.

“It’s actually an analytical question and one which I have devoted an entire class to answering,” he laughs. “My dad had me write a letter to the NDP leader to find out and he never wrote me back – in fact Stephen Lewis still owes me an answer to that.”

Always fascinated with the machinations of the political process, that question was the first of many for Jansen. Rather than looking to influence or change the political world, he sought to understand how and why some parties won elections and others did not.

“I was never interested in running for office, rather I’d always been interested in understanding how it worked and why things happened the way they did,” he says. “It was natural for me to go on to graduate school with those questions, and by the end of my undergraduate degree, I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to do a PhD.”

A predilection to teach was something he discovered at King’s ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ College as an undergraduate student.

“It was such a small school, just 130 students, that I was able to work as a lab assistant as a second-year student and was able to teach tutorials very early on,” says Jansen. “That was really formative for me and really helped me to clarify what I was good at, what I liked and gave me experiences only graduate students got elsewhere.”

He’d go on to earn a master’s at Carleton ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and return to Edmonton and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta for his PhD studies. But it was that early experience at King’s College that would set him up well for his role at the U of L, which he has enjoyed for 17 years.

“I’m really passionate about involving my students in research. Our department is small and that makes it difficult for us to do a lot on the graduate level but it does open up opportunities at the undergrad level,” he says. “Because of our class sizes, I’m able to bring research methods into the classroom and work with students one-on-one. That would not be the case at other research focused institutions in the country.”

As the new Chair of the political science department, a position he assumed following the retirement of Dr. Peter McCormick last year, Jansen sees great potential in continuing to carve out that niche for the U of L.

“Let’s make our undergraduate program innovative and give students something they can’t get anywhere else,” he says.

Jansen deeply respects the legacy McCormick leaves behind and is enthused about working with his colleagues to further the reputation of his department and the U of L.

“Peter was a tremendous mentor for me. I’ve always said I learned to be a political scientist in graduate school but Peter taught me to be a professor,” he says. “I’ve got a tremendous department here. You take the six faculty members I have and if you were to randomly grab six faculty members from any other department in Canada we would be as good as, if not better. I have nothing but amazing things to say about the quality of research and the care for students my colleagues provide.”

And what about that optimism that digital technology and social media could be the great catalyst to a new wave of democratic participation?

“It’s funny, the more I research social media, the less I find I want to use it.”

Annual Long Service Awards and Retiree Recognition Ceremony, May 6

The annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 6, at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballrooms. Faculty and staff are invited to join in the celebration. Please visit the Notice Board for more information and a full list of recipients.

This year, 146 employees will be honoured at this event, along with 17 retiring employees. We recently caught up with Drs. Reg Bibby and Peter McCormick, who both are celebrating 40 years at the U of L. Check out the photos from their early days on campus.

Dr. Peter McCormick

After an illustrious 40-year career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Dr. Peter McCormick will be retiring this year. He won’t be slowing down, though – McCormick plans to pen two books, including a biography of Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin, and will continue to teach at the U of L.

“I’ve had a wonderful time at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ,” McCormick says, explaining that he has constantly expanded his research and teaching horizons as his career progressed.

McCormick has taught a wide variety of political science courses over his tenure, and has had the opportunity to mentor many students. “I’ve had many fantastic students. Some have gone on to be Rhodes Scholars, some have clerked at the Supreme Court,” he says, “The most gratifying thing, for me, is seeing everything clicking together for them. It’s so rewarding to see that.”

Dr. Reg Bibby

When Dr. Reginald (Reg) Bibby came to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 1975, he didn’t anticipate staying for very long. “I had a bit of ambivalence about coming here,” he says. “Lethbridge was very small and the university was relatively unknown at the time. I was afraid I might disappear.”

This year, Bibby celebrates 40 years with the U of L and says the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has provided him with incredible opportunities as a researcher and teacher. “I’ve been given the resources to do everything I have wanted to do,” he says. “There’s also a certain tranquility to the city and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. It’s a great base to work from.”

Bibby also credits fellow faculty members for his success. “I’ve worked with some exceptional colleagues,” he says, adding that Dr. Owen Holmes (LLD ’05) served as an important mentor in his early years at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. “He was wise, generous and encouraging – I owe a lot to him. Owen symbolized the best of the U of L.”

Bibby’s research has focused on social trends, youth, and religion, and has received considerable media attention throughout his career. “My explicit goal has always been to make the material accessible not only to ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ but to others with an interest in the material,” he says. That goal has clearly been met – Bibby’s research has been featured on the cover of Maclean’s four times, and his work has been featured by a variety of media organizations, including the Globe and Mail, CNN and The New York Times. More than 150,000 copies of his fourteen books have been sold. In recognition of the impact of his work on Canadian life, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2006.

“My passion for research comes from my love of ideas. Picking a research area and delving into it is so enjoyable for me,” he says. Currently holding his third U of L Board of Governors Research Chair appointment, Bibby has two new books scheduled for publication in 2016.

Dr. Jennifer Mather

After 30 years at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Dr. Jennifer Mather continues to be inspired by her research and teaching endeavours.

“I keep enjoying what I’m doing,” she says. “I love research and teaching, and I keep postponing my retirement.”

Mather’s primary research is in the behaviour of cephalopod molluscs (octopuses and squid), and her areas of expertise include women in science and examining teaching and learning in higher education. Over the years, she has helped facilitate more than 100 applied studies, and believes in equipping students with the skills and passion required to succeed in a variety of fields.

“I love giving students the opportunity to learn. Watching them grow as individuals, and as scholars, is so rewarding,” she says.

As part of two courses she teaches, including one on Schizophrenia, which she has taught since 1993, and another on Alzheimer’s, Mather requires students to gain personal contact with those affected by the illness.

“In the textbook, it’s a few paragraphs. In the real world, it’s someone’s life,” she says. “For a lot of the students, it’s life-changing.”

As she looks ahead, Mather will continue doing what she enjoys – advancing knowledge and inspiring the next generation.

In late February, Dr. Bryan Kolb (Neuroscience, Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience) and Dr. Susan McDaniel (Sociology, Director, Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy) received Jubilee Medals awarded by the Royal Society of Canada. Both Kolb and McDaniel are Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC). This was the first visit to the U of L campus by Royal Society executive director Darren Gilmour and Royal Society President, Yolande Grisé.

In addition to Kolb and McDaniel, a number of U of L faculty members have also recently received Jubilee medals, among them Dr. Peter McCormick (Political Science), Dr. Reg Bibby (Sociology), Dr. Dayna Daniels (Women and Gender Studies), Dr. Rick Mrazek (Education), Tanya Harnett (Fine Arts/Native American Studies) and U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ held its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony recently, honouring 116 employees who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service. A total of 23 retiring employees were also honoured.

Federal election forum in UHall Atrium, Wednesday

A who's who of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge political pundits will lead today's post-election round table discussion in the UHall Atrium. 2011 Federal Election Wrap-Up - What Actually Happened is from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Atrium and everyone is welcome to attend.

At the start, the 2011 Canadian election was widely depicted as the Canadian version of a Seinfeld episode: about nothing, and likely to change nothing. Instead, it produced a series of surprises and a U of L panel will discuss. Dr. Trevor Harrison (Sociology), Dr. Peter McCormick (Political Science) and Dr. Bill Ramp (Sociology) will lead the discussion, with other surprise guests expected to attend.

The near annihilation of the Bloc in Quebec, the hobbling of the Liberal party in most parts of Canada, the NDP's capturing the post of official opposition, and the election to parliament of Canada's first Green Party member, while also giving Stephen Harper's Conservative's their long-sought after majority are just some of the surprises that came out of the election.

But what actually happened? How and why did events transpire as they did? What do the election results mean for Canadian politics in future?

These are just some of the questions the panel guests will address in this free, public, post-election forum.
