Alumni Association names Jamie Ahksistowaki Medicine Crane as Alumna of the Year

An activist, advocate, educator and artist, Jamie Ahksistowaki Medicine Crane (BEd ’05) has made an indelible impression on the way education is delivered to Indigenous communities, all the while promoting Indigenous rights, women’s rights, human rights and justice. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association is pleased to recognize Medicine Crane as the 2017 Alumna of the Year.

A Blackfoot woman from the Kainai and Piikani Nations, Medicine Crane was raised with traditional ways of knowing and spirituality, which have given her strength and understanding.

After completing a Travel and Tourism diploma from Lethbridge College, Medicine Crane earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, a Bachelor of Education from ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and a Master of Education from Gonzaga ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. A specialist in Indigenous education, she builds the capacity of educators, develops curriculum and works to improve the relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Currently, she is a curriculum consultant for the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Division for Alberta Education.

Deeply engaged in her community, Medicine Crane has been involved with the YWCA for over 12 years, serving on the boards of YWCA Canada and YWCA Lethbridge. She represented Canada at the YWCA’s World Council in Kenya (2007) and Thailand (2015), where she was elected to the World YWCA Board. She is the first Indigenous woman to hold this role.

A life-long activist, she is involved in advocating for Indigenous rights, women’s rights, human rights and justice. Her work and leadership have enhanced several national advocacy initiatives including the Idle No More movement and Sisters in Spirit rallies that raise awareness of violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

She spreads her message of healing and harmony as part of the performing arts duo Young Medicine, which has performed throughout the world promoting First Nations traditional and contemporary music, dance, teachings and arts. In 2017, she released a solo flute album entitled “Honouring Life.”

Medicine Crane was the first Indigenous woman to compete in Miss Universe Canada in 2003 and was awarded the title of Miss Congeniality. She received the title Miss Blackfoot Canada, and founded Niitsitapi Dreams (Blackfoot, meaning, “the real people”), a holistic modeling school designed to build girls’ self-esteem and leadership skills. She is also the creative force behind the clothing line Brave Woman Eco-Designs.

Medicine Crane has been recognized with numerous awards, including the YWCA Canada’s Ann Mowatt Outstanding Young Woman Award; YWCA Lethbridge, Young Woman of Distinction; and the Alberta Colleges-Provincial Award for Creating Excellence, among others.

She leads by example and encourages others to live in harmony and respect one another.

Medicine Crane will be presented with the 2017 Alumna of the Year award at the Let There Be Light Night, an alumni celebration, in Fall 2017.

2013 Alumni Honour Society inductees

Introduced in celebration of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's 35th anniversary in 2002, the Alumni Honour Society recognizes the achievement of successful alumni within the global community. The alumni inducted into this prestigious group have served as role models to our students and the broader ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community through success in their vocation, outstanding community service or superior accomplishment in their avocation.

Sarah Amies (BASc '88)

A vigorous and compassionate human rights advocate, Sarah Amies has more than 20 years of experience in the not-for-profit and education sectors. Since becoming the program director of Lethbridge Family Services – Immigrant Services in 2001, Amies has had a positive impact on new immigrants in the Lethbridge community. Under her leadership, Lethbridge Family Services has grown in programming and services, and expanded its resources. She has worked closely with many volunteer boards, such as the Alberta Association of Immigrant Services Agencies, the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination, Family Violence and Elder Abuse Awareness and Prevention Committee and Social Housing in Action. The YWCA recognized her in 2012.

Sylvia Campbell (BEd '79)

Through her many years as an educator and mentor, Sylvia Campbell has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to environmental issues and human rights. She has served on numerous committees and boards, including the Lethbridge branch of the Canadian Federation of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Women, the Southern Alberta Group for Environment and the Lethbridge Network for Peace. Campbell was a longtime member of the Raging Grannies, a group through which she worked to raise awareness of social justice issues related to peace, the environment, gender, human rights, world equality, Canadian unity and social programs. In 2003, she was recognized by the YWCA.

Frank Gnandt (BASc '74, BEd '79)

Frank Gnandt has been an exceptional educator in Lethbridge School District No. 51 for more than 30 years and has instilled a passion for the arts in many students. Gnandt, currently the choir director for Chinook High School in Lethbridge, is recognized by his peers as an accomplished adjudicator, instructor and conductor. His influence and passion for music have spread to students and audiences locally, provincially, nationally and abroad. Gnandt has been a guest conductor and performed at numerous prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and at the Vatican. Gnandt is a recipient of both the Governor General's Award for Community Service and the ATA Teacher of Excellence Award.

Michelle Hogue (MEd '04)

An assistant professor and co-ordinator of the First Nations Transition Program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Dr. Michelle Hogue has helped ensure the success of many students at university, particularly in science-related programs. Hogue's research blends required curricular and institutional demands with narrative and arts practices that, with holistic knowledge, have the potential to change science education for Aboriginal learners. In addition to her research, Hogue develops new and innovative teaching practices with high school students, educators and administrators on the Blackfoot (Kainai) Reserve in southern Alberta. Hogue has been the recipient of many awards and scholarships, including most recently the Canadian Education Association Pat Clifford Award.

Douglas McArthur (Certificate in Mgt '90)

Douglas McArthur is well known for his enthusiastic support of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and particularly the U of L Alumni Association (ULAA). An investment advisor by profession, McArthur served as ULAA president from 2003 to 2005. His leadership played a key role in advancing the ULAA, strengthening its affinity with alumni and establishing a foundation that the association has continued to build upon. McArthur remains an active member of the ULAA and is currently serving on the U of L Board of Governors. McArthur has invested in his community by volunteering his time with organizations such as Rotary, Crime Stoppers and the Lethbridge Symphony Association.

Diane Randell (BN '91)

Throughout her career, Diane Randell has worked diligently to make a difference in her community. Since beginning her career in nursing in the 1970s, Randell's care and compassion for others has expanded from individual patients to entire communities. Currently the manager of the community and social development group at the City of Lethbridge, Randell's work addresses large-scale issues such as social policy, homelessness, poverty and racism. Randell is a founding member of the Abreast of Bridge Dragon Boat Team, a founding board member and past Chair of the Lethbridge Dragon Boat Festival and a member of the U of L Senate. She has been recognized by Rotary International, the YWCA and is a recipient of the Queen's Jubilee Medal.

Williams earns interim appointment

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors has confirmed the appointment of Lorne Williams as the Interim Assistant Dean of Northern Campuses, effective May 1.

Reporting to the Vice-President Academic and Provost, and working closely with the faculties and the School of Graduate Studies on campus, Williams will provide a voice at Dean's Council and a perspective on the U of L's presence in Calgary and Edmonton.

Currently, more than 1,000 students are enrolled in the two locations, which have been in operation since 1996. Courses are taught primarily in the evenings and on weekends and geared to working professionals.

"We are pleased to have Lorne move into this new position, given his long-term service to the U of L, and his excellent work as a past director and current faculty member of our Calgary campus," says Dr. Andy Hakin, the U of L's Vice-President, Academic and Provost. "The U of L is committed to serving students in Calgary and Edmonton, and this new position will provide more resources for those campuses as we move to take advantage of future opportunities."

Williams moves to this new position with more than 20 years of U of L experience, including more than a decade of work in the Calgary market as a director, instructor and co-ordinator at the U of L Calgary campus. During his time there, he won six teaching awards.

As well, Williams has served on the Faculty Association executive, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Senate, the executive of the Alumni Association, and was recently inducted into the U of L Alumni Honour Society.

Williams spent nearly 15 years in managerial positions in the housing and hospitality business units at the U of L and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary, while furthering his education with four degrees: A Bachelor of Arts, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary; a Bachelor of Management, U of L; a Master of Arts, Leadership and Training, Royal Roads ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ; and a Master of Education, U of L.

He also consults widely on team building, leadership and corporate culture for public, private and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes. Personally, he invests volunteer time with the Calgary Board of Education, Kamp Kiwanis and Scouts Canada.

Before arriving at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Williams helped administer the Olympic Village during the 1988 Winter Olympic games and worked in the political arena for several years, serving two Prime Ministers and a provincial Premier in Calgary and Ottawa.

"I'm excited to work with the Directors, staff and faculty members in Calgary and Edmonton as we move ahead," says Williams. "We have a number of opportunities to take advantage of as we reinforce our presence in Calgary and Edmonton, and I am looking forward to bringing more of the U of L further north."

Galt Alumni gift $150,000 in scholarship

For nearly 70 years (1910 to 1979), the Galt School of Nursing trained more than 1,100 nurses who played -- and still play -- a key role in providing quality health care to the residents of southern Alberta.

Today, Galt School of Nursing alumni and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge officials announced the transfer of nearly $150,000 in scholarship money to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in support of students enrolled in the U of L's nursing program.

"The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is pleased to continue in the tradition established by the Galt School of Nursing and is proud to educate the next generation of nursing professionals," said U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon.

"It is also quite gratifying to know that Galt nursing graduates from up to 60 years ago are sharing in this good news, and can see for themselves how the U of L is working to educate future nurses."

Mahon notes that nursing has undergone an incredible transformation since the Galt School of Nursing was established, especially in terms of educational requirements and advances in medicine and technology.

"There continues to be a need for qualified health care professionals and this gift from the Galt School of Nursing Alumni Association helps ensure that current nursing students have access to much-needed scholarship money."

The fund will be endowed to provide scholarships to entering or continuing Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Nursing After Degree third- and fourth-year students.

Donna Karl, RN, a Galt School of Nursing graduate from 1963 and spokesperson for the alumni group, said the gift to the U of L helps Galt alumni continue their support of nursing in the community.

"It is remarkable that this fund has carried over for more than 100 years, from the pioneering Galt family to the present day. The Alumni Association has looked after it for the past 15 years, and is delighted to have the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ accept it to continue supporting nurses."

Karl, who works part time at Lethbridge College in the Health Services Office, has two daughters who are also nurses.

"I absolutely love this profession, and am really pleased to be working nearly 50 years after being in school. Much has changed since 1963 -- we certainly didn't have the facilities or services today's students have – but we can continue to ensure today's students are supported throughout their education."

The fund was first established in 1910 by the Galt family, who also built and supported the original Galt Hospital (now the site of the Sir Alexander Galt Museum and Archives). The fund is being gifted to the U of L to manage in perpetuity on behalf of the Galt School of Nursing Alumni Association, which has been responsible for the fund since inheriting it from the former Lethbridge Municipal Hospital more than 15 years ago.

The transfer agreement required a change in provincial legislation, which was handled at a government level by former nurse and healthcare provider Bridget Pastoor, MLA Lethbridge East.

The U of L first established a School of Nursing in 1980. Now part of the Faculty of Health Sciences, there are 698 students currently enrolled in the nursing program, which is offered in conjunction with Lethbridge College. To date, more than 1,500 nurses have graduated from the program.

Understanding Islam

In an age when tension between religions has reached a critical point, the need for dialogue, understanding and tolerance has never been more important. An Endowment at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of lethbridge is supporting Islamic studies, and cultivating an understanding of world religions and appreciation of diversity.

Islam is one of the world's great religious traditions – and one of the fastest growing in the West – but it is not without controversy. Since 9-11 particularly, Islam has been at the forefront of many discussions about the challenges of religious tolerance and increasing cultural diversity in the West.

It is also the subject of academic inquiry in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's small Department of Religious Studies and for students like Campbell Peat (BA '08) and James Falconer who study with religious studies professor Atif Khalil. What these students point out is that discussions about "Islam in the West" in the media, and by politicians and pundits alike, lack depth and empathy, and often are coloured by Islamophobia.

"That geopolitical conflicts have been framed in terms of religion or a clash of civilizations seems more like a convenient way for the West to label the 'other' as irrational and extremist while concealing the real roots of the conflicts," says Falconer.

As a student and research assistant in the Department of Sociology at the U of L, Falconer has studied Muslim immigration in the West, complementing his studies with courses about Islam to better understand the cultural and religious context of those he researches.

"The courses in Islamic studies have the potential to help transcend the profound misunderstandings about Islam held by those in western societies, myself included," says Falconer.
"Muslim immigrants are overwhelmingly educated, secularist, progressive and modern – that's why they immigrated to the West," he goes on to explain.

Muslim immigrants to western countries like Canada often find themselves confronted in their new country by misgivings and misunderstandings about their faith, and ultimately about them as citizens.

It was with the hope of dispelling these kinds of misunderstandings that one such Canadian immigrant, the late Dr. Mushtaq Khan, who was a senior research scientist at the Lethbridge Research Station for 28 years, and his wife Catherine Khan (BEd '72, BASc '77), who served as president of the U of L Alumni Association from 1975-1977, established the Mushtaq and Catherine Khan Endowment at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

"We wanted people to know what Islam really is, and that Muslims have about as much to do with terrorism as you or me," Catherine explains. "Most of the people who are Muslim are peaceful, law-abiding citizens who only want to live at peace with their neighbours."

After the events of 9-11, the need for education and cross-cultural understanding only grew. The Khans believed that in supporting education about Islam, they were supporting a future with increased tolerance and less fear.

"We thought if there was more education about what Islam really is then people wouldn't be afraid of it as much as they are," Catherine explains.

The Khans' financial support enabled the Department of Religious Studies to recruit Professor Khalil in 2007 and to attract prominent scholars to speak at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ on the topic of Islam. Khalil, who teaches classes ranging from world religions to upper-level philosophy and theology courses, notes the importance of studying Islam in a country with a growing Muslim population and intensifying anti-Islamic sentiments in the media.

"Canadians, in my view, should not be afraid. Even though there are forms of Islam that are isolationist and exclusivist, mainstream Canadian Islam, which is the Islam of the vast majority of Muslims, stresses peaceful coexistence and tolerance," says Khalil. He hopes that through his courses and the study of Islam and religion more generally, students will come to appreciate the diversity and complexity of religion, allowing them to form relationships of respect with their peers and neighbours, rather than fear or hostility.

Since Khalil's arrival at the U of L and the support from the Khans, the department has expanded its library holdings and attracted some high-profile speakers. Most notable, however, is the benefit to the student population and to the wider community.

"It is my hope that our courses on Islam instil in students a greater appreciation of the richness and diversity of our world, of our religious traditions and of the collective wisdom of the human race," says Khalil. It's a sentiment that has captured the imaginations of many who pass through the department and that is mirrored in the testimony of his students.

"If anything, the promotion of Islamic studies encourages the individual to adopt a reflective position that approaches Islam as a multidimensional display of human emotion and belief," says Peat. "Even a basic understanding of Islam goes a great way to combat ideas of cultural antagonism."

Falconer agrees, and says that he was surprised to learn that Islamic and western civilizations share the same intellectual roots. "They are more compatible than most would imagine based on modern western portrayals and perceptions of Islam," he says.

The Khans' donation has sown the seeds for a future in which mutual understanding and respect between people might blossom.

"Mushtaq was always tolerant of other religions and encouraged tolerance from others," recalls Catherine. "It was his hope that others in his adopted Canadian community could at minimum attempt to understand Islam."

The hopes that fuelled the donation to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ are being fulfilled as hundreds of students every semester enrol in the department's courses and are increasingly exposed to the religions and cultures of their Canadian neighbours.

"The fact that the son of a farmer is able to study one of the world's great traditions in the southern Alberta town he grew up in is simply astounding," says Peat. "Even in smaller communities like Lethbridge we are able to see the effects of global integration. Without founding a multicultural spirit and exploratory ethos we run the risk of letting our ideas of Islam (or any religion, for that matter) become superficial and narrow."

The Khans' commitment to supporting liberal education and the study of religion is indeed one step in the right direction toward a society more tolerant, just and curious about the beliefs of others. It is clear this contribution is helping to mould thoughtful citizens, leaders and educators of tomorrow who are less focused on religious differences and more interested in exploring our shared human experiences.

The art of translation

What do you get when you cross a multiple scholarship winner with an Oxford graduate, Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Translation, senior analyst for the Canadian Privy Council Office, published author and an accomplished musician? You get one remarkable guy by the name of Blair McMurren (BA '96), who just happens to be the U of L's 2010 Alumnus of the Year.

Born and raised in Lethbridge, McMurren graduated from the U of L with Great Distinction, receiving the Faculty of Arts and Science Gold Medal and the Governor General's Silver Medal for Highest Undergraduate Class Standing. His pursuit of academia didn't stop there. McMurren was selected as a Rhodes Scholar and immediately went to Oxford ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to pursue graduate studies.

An English major at the U of L, particularly fond of the works of James Joyce, McMurren focused his attention at Oxford on furthering his understanding of English literature. He earned an Honours BA in English language and literature, and went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in comparative literature as well as an MA in translation from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Surrey at Guildford.

Ask McMurren what he initially planned to do after completing his education, and he'll admit that he wasn't really sure.

"Some far-sighted senior officials with the federal public service came recruiting at Oxford, and they made a compelling pitch for returning to Canada and making a difference in public policy," he says. "The idea of working on a variety of key files and having some influence on what would be happening in my country resonated with me."

McMurren returned from the U.K. in 2002 to begin work with the Department of Canadian Heritage. He also helped to launch a government initiative that has since become the Recruitment of Policy Leaders program. Since 2009, McMurren has been a senior analyst with the Priorities and Planning secretariat at the Privy Council Office – the department that supports the Prime Minister and Cabinet in all policy and decision-making actions. He is the lead analyst responsible for briefing senior officials and engaging with federal departments on Cabinet decisions related to climate change, clean energy and the environment.

McMurren concedes that the connection between English literature, translation and public policy isn't obvious, but says that his academic background fostered intrigue for the work he does today.

"Closely examining James Joyce's approach to translation is where many things started to come together for me," says McMurren. "So much of human history comes to us through the lens of translation. Freud, Marx, the Bible, what have you – all history-shaping works, and all are translated. Joyce was obsessed with the concept of translation, which ultimately got me thinking about how cultural politics work, and how ideas and issues move from one cultural context to another. It's not a huge stretch from there to cultural policy, which is all about how you tell your story as a country. It's a complex task, and in Canada we do it bilingually and multiculturally, which makes it richer but even harder."

While McMurren intends to continue his career in public policy, he would also like to branch out, perhaps by teaching sessional courses at a university. He's also very keen to give back to the school where his illustrious career began.

"I'd like to help U of L students find out all that's available to them after they leave the university," he says. "This award is a very humbling thing. I'd like to offer my experience to students and perhaps do something to help bridge the famous policy/research divide. I think we all have an interest in getting a broader, better dialogue going about the issues facing Canadian society."

Faculties of Health Sciences and Management reunion

On Sept. 24, more than 250 health sciences and management alumni and friends returned home to celebrate the opening of Markin Hall.

The evening included tours of the new state-of-the-art facility, a "U" photo booth and the chance to catch up with fellow alumni and professors. In addition, both faculties hosted dinners to honour the individuals who helped make Markin Hall possible.

The Faculty of Management celebrated the completion of the Power of 25 initiative, a unique project envisioned by U of L alumni Dan Laplante (BMgt '88), Kevin Nugent (BMgt '88) and Dean Setoguchi (BMgt '89) to recruit 25 alumni to give a minimum of $25,000 each to support Markin Hall.

In the end, the Power of 25 initiative raised more than $2 million, including matching dollars and additional contributions from the participants. More importantly, it united a group of successful leaders who share the same passion, appreciation and pride for the U of L.

Similarly, the Faculty of Health Sciences hosted faculty, staff and friends at the inaugural Friends of Health Sciences Dinner. Former U of L President Dr. Bill Cade and his wife Elsa were honoured with the first Friends of Health Sciences award for their support in growing the Faculty.

A new year for the Edmonton and FNMI chapters

On Oct. 21, the Edmonton Chapter of the Alumni Association had the opportunity to review its first successful year of operation at an Annual General Meeting. The year had focused on further establishing the chapter and in reconnecting with alumni. In addition, the chapter hosted two alumni receptions and a family BBQ. With Jeanette Dotimas (BMgt '01) elected as the new president, the chapter will continue to build on these endeavours.

The First Nations, Métis and Inuit Chapter held its Annual General Meeting on Nov. 2. Chaired by Leroy Little Bear (BASc '72, DASc '04), the chapter will continue to foster a spirit of partnership between the FNMI alumni and students on campus. Participation in activities such as Native Awareness Week and student advisory panels will carry on in the year ahead.

FIAT LUX ring designs

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association invites alumni, students and the general community to submit designs for a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Fiat Lux ring. This ring for alumni will be part of a new tradition in building pride at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

FNMI Chapter meeting Tuesday night

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting for its First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) chapter on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in Andy's Place (AH100).

In 2008, the FNMI Chapter was established to renew, strengthen and enlighten life-long relationships with each other, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and the Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal community.

Dr. Cade hadn't officially started his term as President. I had a wall of students in front of me, all filling out forms. As Dr. Cade walked by the Registrar's Office, he looked over in my direction, smiled and waved.

I immediately looked behind me, as I thought Leslie or Debi was standing behind me, and he was waving to them. I thought to myself.....he couldn't possibly be waving to me, but he was. That simple gesture made my day!

In past years the Registrar's Office had instituted a photo line-up at convocation. After students came off the dais and had their picture taken, a lot of them were a bit disoriented and would walk off in the wrong direction.

I was positioned at the front to guide them with Mrs. Cade unofficially assisting me in her front row seat by pointing them in the right direction.

The one thing I will always remember about Dr. Cade is his ability to warm up any room with his intellect, passion, energy and friendly Texas drawl. Bill is a remarkable man who I instantly had a liking for. An engaging individual, I was at ease when we met and always looked forward to speaking with him when I knew we would be at the same events.

As Chancellor, I was a member of the search committee which recommended Bill's appointment as President. His warm and vibrant personality, together with the support of Elsa has proven to be a boon to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

We worked together as a team during my term as Chancellor on the Senate, the Board of Governors and in many relationships with governments and the public.

For the past ten years, as we worked together to advance the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's relationships with Canada and Alberta, he has been a visionary and dynamic force to identify and advance the goals of programs, advancement and infrastructure development.

The physical face of the campus has been dramatically changed and improved. He leaves with admiration and respect within academia and the wider communities, locally, in Alberta and Canada.

I was one of the first people on campus to ever meet Dr. Bill Cade as I was Secretary to the Search Committee who hired him.

You have seen him with his wife, Elsa, together at countless events on campus and it gives a sense of unity and community involvement, family value and commitment.

One of my first meetings with Bill Cade came within weeks of taking office as mayor when he called on me to live up to a campaign promise.

Throughout the 2001 mayoralty campaign I had promoted the concept of a community-driven economic development model.

Bill and several of his friends made it clear that it was not only a good idea, it was one they expected me to implement forthwith. And with Bill's guidance and support, Economic Development Lethbridge moved from vision to reality.

I was deeply moved at the time that a U of L president should be so engaged in his community. As I was to learn, this was just the first of a series of partnerships between the university and the city that Bill had a hand in creating.

The 1st Choice Savings Wellness Centre and the Community Stadium are two others that come to mind, but there are other important examples.

What kind of president has Bill been? Energetic, charismatic, passionate, considerate, and above all, focused on the needs of students.

Bill and Elsa have played important parts in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge story over the last ten years, but they have also earned the respect and love of people they have come in contact throughout the community. Good luck, my friend!

I have many reasons to thank Bill Cade, but the one that has meant the most to me is the interest and support he has shown for my mother and her work over the years.

My mother is the Yiddish-language writer Chava Rosenfarb. Yiddish and the rich literature and culture associated with it are little known in Alberta.

This is not surprising since the language itself is dying, a victim of the Holocaust. Today there are few speakers and fewer readers.

To have someone promote and encourage the work of a Yiddish writer the way Bill has done is thus truly remarkable and truly praiseworthy.

To date, the U of L is the only university in Canada to have given an honorary degree to a Yiddish writer, despite the fact that Canada has been host to a vibrant Yiddish culture for over a hundred years.

I have no words to express how very moving this is to me and how grateful I am.

First of all thanks for this opportunity to pay tribute to someone I will always consider a friend.

From the first time I shook Bill Cade's hand I felt completely at ease with him.

I do recall thinking "Is that a Texas accent I hear?" Oh yes it was.

Bill's attribute of treating everybody with respect has endeared him to friends and business associates alike. When we met with a number of people in Ottawa promoting the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge he impressed everyone with his passion and demeanour.

The first time I was in his office at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ my questions regarding his collection of crickets quickly led to a lesson on the reproductive machinations of the species.

His interest in how each person at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ contributed to it's success endeared him to people on and off campus.

During one election campaign, I received an invitation to take part in a polar swim fund raiser at Park Lake. When I saw that Bill was on the list of participants, I quickly sent him a pledge and wished him well, to his credit he got the job done without any lingering damage.

I'm not sure how many people know that Bill is a hot rodder at heart and spent time at the drag strip in his day, I promised to take him for a blast in my 1967 GTX, haven't done that yet but will.

Dr. Cade! Make sure you take the time to reflect on what you have meant to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and southern Alberta, how much better the institution and all of us are for having you come to town. I hope you and your wonderful bride continue to enjoy peace and happiness.

I have to admit to becoming a big fan of Bill and Elsa Cade.

Our first meeting was in my office. He insisted on coming to me. How about that!

To me, it was a generous thing to do and indicated his strong character personified by a professional humbleness that I was not used to in my previous interactions with American scholars. When I discovered that he had taken out Canadian citizenship, well then, I was hooked!

Bill's cooperation with Lethbridge College was essential at the time of his arrival and I thank him eternally for it.

Bill Cade has what has to be the best memory for names! He can walk into a room and address each person by their correct name and if he is meeting you for the first time, you can bet he will remember it the next time you meet.

I was on a shoot at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre and Bill walked by and said, "Hi Dory…Hi Ted!" Ted, our cameraperson, was completely floored that Bill would remember his name! That is a real gift!"

What was your first impression of Bill?

I met Bill Cade the first time in an elevator and he was friendly, asking me about my work and role at the university.

The second time I saw him in the hallway he greeted me by name. He did that with everyone he met: learned the faculty, support staff, the cleaners' names... everybody and talked with all of us about our work...

He recognized and called people by name all over the campus.

What do you most admire about Bill?
Savvy leadership, deep academic experience and communication skills with public and with individuals, whatever level they are at.

His forthrightness and efficiency, with an ability to know what is most important and whatever isn't at all. Balance. Respect for his family and Elsa and the positive way he speaks about her. His friendliness and courage to be tough when necessary. High standards. His advocacy for the right to do research, the need for the university to be protected as a liberal arts university, social justice, speaking out for balance of gender and minorities.

What opportunities have you been given during Bill's presidency?
To be on the board of governors, to contribute my views... he has ears to hear, to be part of the university community, to have a women's scholars series, to feel confident in my university's management and leadership skills, to feel I work for a good organization, to feel proud of the importance of teaching.

What was something surprising you discovered about Bill?
He's a good cook and a wine aficionado, he likes dogs, drag racing, and he taught public school.

What made Bill an excellent president?
Knowledge of universities and all his people, the role of a university in the public domain, ability to forge meaningful working relationships, to call bullshit when necessary, practical know-how brought to bear on complex issues, new ideas, openness, dedication to due and fair process.

Recall a time when you saw Bill in action behind-the-scenes.
Arguing for the good of the university behind closed doors with board members, honoring professors' work and students' work. Kindness to people upset by life's difficult circumstances.

Share a funny story.
Being in his office and interrupting university talk with an invitation to watch his six-legged friends moult, or something dining on crickets with a mixture of pride and happiness.

Share a sentimental story.
It matters to me that he said he couldn't get through Goldie Morgantaler mother's speech on accepting her honorary degree about being a graduate of the second world war, of Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen, without tears. It reveals a deep humanity.Share your thanks.

The one word I would use to describe Dr. Bill Cade is: advocate (for quality higher learning).

I have gratitude for Bill's 10 fine years as President.

I remember very clearly one day approximately 9 years ago when Dr. Cade invited my four-year-old twin boys and myself to come and view his life's work with his crickets.

We started in his office and I learned firsthand what patience he had. My boys were touching all of his irreplaceable objects in his office without any scared shrieking from Dr. Cade. In fact, he encouraged them.

Once we had viewed his office, we were taken down to the 4th Floor to see his lab. You can imagine the excitement of four year old boys to see a room filled with crickets.

They were fascinated as Dr. Cade showed them the crickets at various stages of growth. At one point, one of the cages with the babies tipped over and my boys were scrambling to save their lives.

As Dr. Cade talked about all the interesting facts regarding the crickets, he had two boys hugging him and continually asking questions.

It was a very unique experience, one that I know we will never forget. Dr. Cade, thank you for your patience and kindness shown to my children.

I find Bill Cade very personable. When I said, "hello Dr. Cade", he responded, "just call me Bill!" He's always gone out of his way to say "hi" to me and shake my hand.

I recall a time I was coming back from lunch, Bill was walking down the hall with the Education Minister and other senior officials. He stopped to say hello and introduced me to the others. I was shocked and in awe that he would take time out of his busy schedule for me!

When Bill Cade first came to our campus as the new President, I was the president of the AUPE local here on campus and our executive was one of the groups he met with to discuss concerns, share ideas, etc.

Being personable as he was, he also asked about our families and lives outside work. One of the things that I shared with him was that my husband was an alum and my son was a current student, majoring in philosophy.

Weeks later, I was with my family at a local restaurant when Bill walked in. He immediately came over to our table, shaking my son and husband's hands, calling them by their first names and relating what I had told him about their time at the university.

We were amazed that, considering all the people he was meeting in his introduction to the U of L, he would remember these details about us. But that's Bill – people matter to him.

I organized a luncheon for a visiting Chinese delegation that Bill attended. Roast beef was served along with a side of horseradish -- and the dish of horseradish was placed with the starting salad at every seat during the meal.

Bill is very charismatic and of course was the focus of our luncheon.

As we started the meal, he picked up his dish of horseradish and poured it all over his salad (thinking it was salad dressing).

Before we knew it, every visitor from China was doing the same!

In the following moments, everyone was digging into their salads and not understanding our instructions of "it's for the beef".

Garden salad is not served in China and with the horseradish it must have been an unusual culinary experience for our guests but a great story for us!"

From the very first - when Bill came to the U of L, he was one of us. He didn't walk around with his nose in the air looking for subservience as so many do. He showed that he was in the trenches with us working for the good of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

"Five years ago, when I was being recruited for the Presidency of Lethbridge College, I did lots of research on the institution and the community. When I found out that Dr. Bill Cade was a fellow Longhorn (we're both graduates of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Texas at Austin) I gave him a call to find out his perspective on Lethbridge as well as his impression of the relationship between the U of L and Lethbridge College.

I remember I was between flights somewhere in the US and Bill spent thirty or forty minutes with me on the phone, answering my questions and providing his insights. He also directed me to a U of L student who had transferred over from the College who also was very helpful in providing further information.

Bill and I have been breakfasting regularly since my arrival in Lethbridge. Our biggest challenge is always around remembering whose turn it is to pay. (smile)

Aside from the many transfer arrangements that were already in place, during Bill's tenure Lethbridge College now delivers the first two years of the U of L's Nursing Degree. We are also collaborating on a post-degree program to fast-track new nurses into the workplace. There are other opportunities in discussion as the two Lethbridge institutions look at how best to serve our students.

I have very much enjoyed working with Bill. . . he is a colleague and a friend. I hope we'll still have a chance to catch up over a meal as he continues with his teaching and research at the university. Conversely, I would be happy to visit him in San Antonio. . . perhaps we could take in a football game at UT. Hook 'em, Horns!

"The most memorable thing I remember about Bill Cade (and I have told this story many many times) is that he was here in our office prior to his July 1 start date to meet with Leslie. He spoke to me for perhaps 1 to 2 minutes.

Weeks later, I received a telephone call and picked up the phone answering Good Morning, Registrar's Office and this Texas drawl came back, "Is that you Linda?"

I almost fell off my chair. He met and spoke to many on campus that week he stopped by here and he remembered my name after a two minute conversation! That just blew me away. His incredible memory is an excellent quality and I think he has had a profound impact on those he met which has served the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ well.

I would like to wish Elsa and Bill the very best and please know that you will be missed.

When I first met Bill Cade, he made me laugh by 'joking' with me about how uncomfortable he was with all things medical in nature and how he avoided medical issues.

But I began to realize that he must have unknowingly started "Bill's Medical Curse" because suddenly all kinds of large-scale health concerns began affecting the entire university.

Starting with SARS scare/concern in 2003, we had large-scale communicable disease outbreaks of meningitis, mumps, H1N1, norovirus, as well as the other more typical viruses such as HPV, mononucleosis and strep.

We had public health scares with avian flu worries and measles concerns. Of course, then Bill changed his mind about us medical personnel when he had a bit of a health scare himself a few years back and maybe that helped to 'lift the curse'. My best wishes to Bill and his lovely wife Elsa for a HEALTHY and happy retirement!

"After the election of 2008, I had the opportunity to meet with Bill Cade at the Legislature in Edmonton. Bill , Bob Turner, and myself sat down for a coffee and a quick chat in the cafeteria, the quick chat turned into a full half hour of visiting like we were old friends.

Bill is a very sincere welcoming man, who converses easily and comfortably with people from all walks of life. Prior to that first meeting I remember thinking to myself that it was going to be an awkward meeting, with not a lot of common issues between us, to discuss outside of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, but thankfully I was wrong.

I have been lucky enough to have had many meetings and discussions over the past 2 years, and always the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and Education was Bill's priority.

When I mentioned that my daughter had started her first year at Uof L , Bill encouraged me to have her give him a call and stop by for a visit sometime.

For a few months she procrastinated thinking that he would be too busy and was not really serious. Finally when she did make an appointment to visit Bill, she found that he was not only the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ President, but more over he was a friend, a friend from a different walk of life, a friend from a different generation, but someone who made every effort to be a friend.

The world would be a better place if more people were like Bill Cade.

Through their dedicated efforts to contribute to the success of community-based organizations like the Rotary Club of Lethbridge and Economic Development Lethbridge as well as their willingness to invite people into their home and lives, they have left a legacy of positivity and merit for the organization that will linger for a long time.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has grown through new facilities but also in terms of influence during Dr. Cade's tenure.

By association, the reputation and respect of our city has also grown. I hope they take a measure of pride in their contributions and that they always retain fond memories of their time here.

Bill Cade is one of that rare breed who truly understand all of the roles they're expected to play in their position. He's equal parts academic, administrator, scientist and statesman.

And he can express his passion in each of those roles in a way that everyone can understand, appreciate and share. He can even make crickets sound exciting!

Bill is also the greatest cheerleader the university has ever seen (must be the Texan in him). Under his watch, the U of L has become a stronger community partner and a source of immense pride for all Southern Albertans.

It would be impossible to list all of Bill's accomplishments here. For me, his most enduring legacy will be the passion and joy that was always contagious whenever I spoke with him. I will miss working with him in our official capacities, but I'll always consider Bill a personal friend.

Although I do not have a long history of knowing Bill and I do not have any specific story to share I do want to acknowledge that he was one of the main reasons I have reengaged with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge after 18 years.

When I first met Bill Cade in my office in Calgary it was shortly after becoming a donor of the Markin Hall project.

We were discussing the progress and development of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and the current projects being undertaken.

As I listened to Bill speak I could feel his passion and excitement for what he was building.

He believed in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, he believed the people working at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, and he believed in the difference he was making for the students.

He asked me to become involved with the Advancement Committee and I decided immediately, knowing, that he is a man of action and really does make things happen.

He smiled when I asked him if committee work and my involvement would actually get results - he said - "We want individuals involved with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ that will make a difference".

So, what I am really saying is he is the reason an Alum like myself is involved with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Bill's leadership will no doubt be a loss to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, however, his vision will be carried on by the next generation.

I wish Bill and Elsa all the best in the future and I look forward to his life updates in the future.

I am not sure if I am too late with this but I would like to mention the first tour I went on after a senate meeting of the theater. I made a casual comment to Bill about recruitment for the university while on the tour. By Monday he had John Kincaid in contact with me to follow up on the comment! He doesn't miss a thing!

Also I am not sure you were there when he told the story of the streaker in the new stadium....after an enthusiastic monologue of the young man's escapade, without cracking a smile with his deep Texas accent, he said, "of course my official stance is I am shocked and appalled"". Most of us were nearly in tears laughing by this point.

I am sure you ave lots of things submitted but these are two things I remember that endear him to many.

I recall a story told by Bill in his earlier years at the U of L. He arrived at the Coutts border with a collection of insects The Immigration person asked Bill to explain why he was bringing insects into Canada from the USA.

Bill got pissed off and asked if it would be better if he just let all the insects escape. This irked the border patrol person who insisted that Bill would have to wait until an expert academic was called to the border from Calgary to vouch that the insects would not harm Canadians.

This caused Bill to have to wait more than three hours for another academic to vouch for the insects and for Bill, who was and is a first class entymologist.

Insult was added to injury when the entylologist from Calgary signed the form presented to her without even examining the insects.

Not the best WELCOME TO CANADA that Bill ever received. I found it as amusing as Bill latterly did.

Our first meeting was on the diocese for convocation where we shared a rare first impression when he sincerely turned to me and chuckled at a joke.

Southern Albertans pride themselves on their ability to cope with our climate… Imagine my glee when President Cade went above the call of duty to pace his heavy breathing in preparation for a True North Polar Bear sip! This man can do it all.

The one word to describe Dr. Bill Cade is: REAL

Senate Volunteer Award winners to be honoured

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will celebrate its 2010 Spring Convocation this week, Thursday and Friday, and among the honouredattendees will be Senate Volunteer Award winners Elsa Cade and Dr. Robert Hironaka.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Senate's Volunteer Award recognizes people who have volunteered to serve the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

"The award is open to people who volunteer for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in many ways," says Chancellor Richard Davidson. "A lot of people don't realize that in addition to our talented faculty and staff, we rely on hundreds of people who perform thousands of hours of volunteer work for the institution each year."

Any member of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community is eligible for the award, including past and present ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ volunteers and individuals who represent the U of L in the community.

A committee representing volunteers, faculty, staff, alumni and students will screen nominations and develop a pool of approved candidates. Both Cade and Hironaka will be honoured at Thursday evening's Chancellor's Dinner in the U of L Atrium.

Elsa Cade

One of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's most effective ambassadors, Elsa Cade supports and engages in countless ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ activities and events, and advances the institution's relationship with local and global communities.

Over the past 10 years, Cade has been present at every convocation ceremony, many senate committee meetings, all public dinners and receptions, and has attended student events, public lectures, celebrations or announcements, and much more.

She has graciously hosted a vast number of dinner parties for community people, faculty, staff, students, and volunteers. Cade has also travelled frequently to maintain and enhance the U of L's relationship beyond southern Alberta. In particular she has helped foster the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's important relationship with Hokkai-Gakuen ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Sapporo, Japan.

Beyond the U of L, Cade has provided dedicated volunteer service for several community organizations. She is an active member of the Rotary Club and a board member of 5th on 5th Youth Services of Lethbridge. She has served on the board of the Alberta Science Foundation and the board of the Friends of the Galt Museum.

Following the earthquake in Haiti, Cade harnessed the power of blogging and online social networking to raise funds to purchase 118 shelterboxes, large containers that hold a 10-person tent, blankets, a stove, a tool kit, and other equipment needed by the survivors of that natural disaster.

Former U of L Chancellor Dr. Robert Hironaka has volunteered throughout the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for many years.

Hironaka was a member of the U of L Senate from 1983 to 1987 and Chancellor from 1995 to 1999. He continues to be one of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's most devoted supporters, making himself available to the U of L whenever he is available to help. He regularly attends special occasions and sporting events at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, and participates in committees, fundraisers, celebrations, campaigns, and special presentations.

Hironaka has been an active member of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association for several years, in many roles, from executive officer to member at large. He freely shares his expertise and knowledge, and volunteers for many Alumni Association events. A key member of the Alumni Association's Recognition Committee, he is diligent in maintaining this committee's high standards. In 2002, Hironaka received an honourary Doctor of Laws degree from the U of L, in recognition of his service to the institution.

In addition to his ongoing support of the U of L, Hironaka is an active volunteer for community organizations like Rotary and the Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens (which he helped found).

Whatever volunteer work he is doing, he is an exemplary ambassador for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.
