reduction strategies<br /> - flood hazard mapping needs to be updated as communities and river systems change<br /> - majority of flood hazard studies are now up to two decades old</strong></em></p><p>A Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge geography researcher is suggesting that flood mitigation and future planning processes involve people in the communities most affected &ndash; to help cities and towns look ahead and reduce some of the challenges faced across the province by recent flooding.</p><p>Dr. Tom Johnston, who studies human dimensions of natural hazards, said that as much as the recently-announced flood mitigation plan and other measures, such as an expert panel on flood issues, are important and timely steps forward, the processes by which people and the environment engage is what concerns him as flood reduction planning begins.<br /><br /> &quot; With many thousands of people displaced over a short period of time, entire communities affected by flooding and the dramatic change that has brought to how people live, work and interact with each other, the critical element to planning for the future is community engagement.&quot;<br /><br /> Johnston says that structural responses &ndash; constructing flood-control dams, or physically changing or dredging parts of a river to better manage water flow -- need to be matched with non-structural or policy-based responses, such as incorporating the latest and best available flood hazard information into community and land-use planning, and even prohibiting development in high-risk places.<br /><br /> &quot; It is extremely important that in addition to scientists and engineers that we have community involvement in any land-use planning process, not only to ensure that the challenge of flooding is minimized, but also to have the community members be aware of, and fully involved in, the future of their community.&quot;<br /><br /> Johnston adds that social scientists, such as human geographers and other behavioural scientists also need to be included in the discussion because their expertise would complement the expertise of hydrologists and engineers. &quot; One would be foolish to consult a cardiologist about a hip replacement, so why would we rely on experts trained in disciplines that don&#39;t deal with understanding human behaviour for advice on human dimensions of hazard management?&quot;<br /><br /> Johnston says that it&#39;s stating the obvious that no one wishes to go through another flood season like this. &quot;Regardless of how affected a particular community is &ndash; from severe to moderate -- it would be prudent to get people more directly involved and looking ahead not only to next year, but 30 or more years in the future, so they could say they helped to solve a big problem for the next generation of residents. This year&#39;s flooding in the Bow River Basin was extreme. The chances of a flood of that magnitude occurring in any given year are very low &mdash; probably less than one per cent &mdash; but we need to remember that includes next year.&quot;<br /><br /> The Government of Alberta recently rolled out a Flood Hazard Mitigation Plan, which Johnston says will be helpful to increase public awareness about flood-affected areas of the province.<br /><br /> &quot;A central feature of the plan is a web-based interactive map that highlights &quot;Flood Hazard Areas&quot; down to the local scale. The GIS-based system is operator friendly, and if you have used interactive mapping software on your smart phone or some other device, you can easily navigate this system,&quot; Johnston says. <a href="http://environment.alberta.ca/01655.html" rel="nofollow">http://environment.alberta.ca/01655.html</a></p><p>The hazard maps will be useful for home buyers, and should be helpful in guiding flood-proofing efforts and for land-use planning, Johnston adds, but in order for the system to achieve anything close to its full potential, two conditions must be satisfied.<br /><br /> &quot;First, the studies used to delineate flood hazard areas should be as current as possible. Second, local and regional authorities charged with the responsibility for land-use planning must be willing to use the system to guide their decision making, even though this could involve constraining the range of residential location choices available to citizens.&quot;<br /><br /> Johnston says that as of June, 2013, more than 50 flood hazard studies had been completed for the provincial government.<br /><br /> &quot; The most recent studies in and around the communities experiencing severe flooding in June were completed after February, 1996, or 17 years ago.&quot; (<a href="http://environment.alberta.ca/01656.html" rel="nofollow">http://environment.alberta.ca/01656.html</a> )<br /><br /> &quot; Many were completed under the Canada-Alberta Flood Damage Reduction Program, a program which began in 1989, but lapsed in 1999. The studies covered most of the province, including all of the heavily populated ones. A majority of the studies -- approximately 60 per cent -- are now up to two decades old. During that time, communities have changed, and the physical geography of entire regions have changed as residential and commercial developments increased.&quot;<br /><br /> Given the recent flood events, future hazard zone mapping should be more consistent, Johnston says.<br /><br /> &quot; We are dealing with dynamic systems, many of which are under increasing pressure from a variety of human activities, so it is prudent to make sure they are done regularly.&quot;<br /><br /> When a panel chaired by George Groeneveld, then the Alberta MLA for the constituency of Highwood (encompassing High River and surrounding areas) submitted its report following the 2005 floods (website link below) Johnston says it included in its recommendations that Alberta Environment develop a maintenance program to ensure that the flood risk maps are updated when appropriate. &quot; This is a recommendation that many in the flood mitigation and hazard response communities would like to see acted upon sooner rather than later.&quot;<br /><br /> As well, Johnston says that any future planning process should also include a review of legislation surrounding land development to require that the level of flood hazard must be taken into account in the course of land development decisions.<br /><br /> &quot; The current regulations state that local authorities &#39;may&#39; require developers to stipulate &quot;&hellip;if the land subject to the application is located in a potential flood plain.&#39; The province may wish to raise the bar in light of recent events.&quot; <a David Naylor (Physics and Astronomy) and Robert Sutherland (Neuroscience, Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience) made the 2013 list for their achievements in the lab -- outer space, in Naylor's case, and for Sutherland, advocating for the academic community as the President of the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations.<br> <br> <strong>Dr. David Naylor </strong><br> <br> As an instructor with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's physics department since 1981, David Naylor has taken his lab to the upper echelons of experimental astrophysics. Practically speaking, that means he designs and uses instruments that can measure incredibly small amounts of radiation and light.<br> <br> His primary project for the last four years has been the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE), a telescope on the Herschel Space Observatory, which was launched in 2009.<br> <br> The Herschel is winding down its mission as it runs out of liquid helium to cool its instruments, but its 25,000 hours of studying the universe have already led to 250 peer-reviewed articles, a better understanding of the galaxy and spin-off businesses in the Lethbridge area.<br> <br> Naylor himself was instrumental in establishing Blue Sky Spectroscopy, a private company that has won several contracts from the European and Canadian space agencies and delivered complex instrumentation to leading research teams across the planet. And the SPIRE's legacy is still in its infancy. Astronomers will analyze the prolific telescope's legacy of data for years to come.<br> <br> <strong>Dr. Robert Sutherland </strong><br> <br> Rob Sutherland's day job is as a professor and chair of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's department of neuroscience, but his public profile this year has come as a result of his role as president of the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations.<br> <br> CAFA represents academic associations at the province's four research-intensive institutions (Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Calgary, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta and Athabasca Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬).<br> <br> They were all hit hard in the provincial budget in March, with cuts to their operating budgets of more than seven per cent. Sutherland was suddenly thrust into the limelight as a defender of tertiary education from both the budget cuts and the mandate letters sent to the institutions from Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk.<br> <br> You can be sure the battle will continue for years as the provincial government continues its austerity measures and the universities fight to get their funding back up to &ndash; schedule will once again move forward, but not with the scope that was anticipated prior to the Mar. 7 provincial budget announcements.<br> <br> The schedule has been altered in recent weeks in light of cuts made by the provincial government to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s Campus Alberta operating grant, with projects slated to draw funding from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s general operating funds suspended until further notice.<br> <br> "In order to stay true to our recently reaffirmed values, those capital projects that will draw on operating funds will be postponed until we have a better handle on our financial situation," says Vice-President (Finance &amp; Administration) Nancy Walker.<br> <br> Only those projects with funding specifically received under the Infrastructure Maintenance Program (IMP), or other restricted capital grants, will continue as previously scheduled.<br> <br> The now postponed capital projects include Phase 2 of the far west parking lot project, including the rehabilitation of Lot E, which is rescheduled for summer 2014. Some maintenance work will continue in the west lots, including the repair of asphalt badly damaged by winter conditions, as well as the completion of some of last summer's preliminary work, but the bulk of the project is now on hold.<br> <br> In addition, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Centre for the Arts North Patio Concrete Paver Replacement project has been postponed until further notice, as have the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Hall Gathering Space Rehabilitation project and the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience HVAC Assessment and Rehabilitation project.<br> <br> Significant work will continue over the summer and people will see the completion of initiatives such as the renovation of food services spaces, the Physical Education Tunnel Rehabilitation and South Plaza Replacement, as well as the Library Roof Replacement, with all funding coming from either IMP or from specific capital grants earmarked for their completion.<br> <br> "It is important to note that targeted capital funding received must be spent on the grant's designated capital projects and the funds cannot be used for other purposes or to supplement the operating budget," adds Walker.<br> <br> The summer construction season is a very important time for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge as the Department of Facilities works hard on a multitude of maintenance programs to keep the schema:articleBody"> <p>According to the provincial government, small businesses make up about 96 per cent of all businesses in Alberta. While they may be small, they certainly are mighty. In fact, small businesses in the province contribute nearly 30 per cent of Alberta's gross domestic product (GDP) – a figure that puts them first in the country for small business GDP per capita in 2009. But it's not just small enterprises in Alberta that are economic powerlifters. Across Canada, small businesses are doing their bit by employing half of the total workforce.</p><p>The hard reality, however, is that 75 per cent of Canadian small businesses fold within nine years. Why does that happen, and what factors contribute to the long-term success of some small businesses?</p><p>These questions and others like them are being explored at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's newly established Small Business Institute (SBI) in the Faculty of Management. Founded earlier this year, the SBI links small businesses to the expertise of researchers, professionals and other business people. Simply put, the SBI serves as a hub for research on small businesses and a resource for those who own, work at and are interested in them.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/sam-sbi.jpg" alt="SBI guys" title="Dr. M. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff want to help area small businesses avoid the pitfalls that doom many great ideas."><div class="image-caption">Dr. M. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff want to help area small businesses avoid the pitfalls that doom many great ideas.</div></div></p><p>The Institute investigates many issues related to businesses, including succession, sustainability and franchising. The SBI also works with rural areas throughout southern Alberta, where small businesses are often the lifeblood of the community.</p><p>"The SBI is an excellent example of U of L professors and researchers working to ensure that their work is relevant and valued in the community, and that leading business practices can be adopted by small businesses in the region," says David Hill, director of Centres and Institutes at the U of L.</p><p>The SBI was established by researchers Dr. M. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff. Both professors in the Faculty of Management, they worked together initially to co-author the book Little Empires: Multi-Generational Small Business in Southern Alberta, Canada. Published in 2008, Little Empires profiled 11 local, family-run operations.</p><p>"We wanted to help small businesses learn from each other," says Kazakoff, noting that the SBI was a logical evolution of the work invested in Little Empires. "With the Institute, we wanted to raise the profile of small businesses and interact with the community. It was our way of giving back."</p><p>The strategy works well, says Paul McDonald (BMgt '88), one of the entrepreneurs featured in Little Empires. McDonald, along with his brothers Jim (BMgt '80) and Gord (BMgt '89), owns the McDonald Auto Group, which has operated in southern Alberta since 1942. While the family business originally sold John Deere tractors, it now owns McDonald Chevrolet Buick GMC in Taber and McDonald Nissan in Lethbridge.</p><p>Participating in Little Empires, says McDonald, was an eye-opening experience. "It allowed me to see how other businesses operate and what allowed them to prosper." Today, he repays those insights by serving on the SBI's Advisory Board. "They want to know the challenges small businesses face and the resources we need to succeed in the future. We provide that feedback."</p><p>In addition to guiding the SBI's initiatives, Alberta businesses are also supporting them financially. This fall, ATB Financial made a $36,000 investment in the SBI that will sponsor a speaker series and bring industry leaders and researchers – including Hunter and Kazakoff – to rural communities throughout southern Alberta. The purpose of the business education seminars is to share knowledge and experiences on topics pertaining to small businesses.</p><p>That expertise is also showcased in Hunter and Kazakoff's second book, which was released earlier this year. Unlike Little Empires though, Small Business: Journey to Success was written primarily for an academic audience, reflecting the researchers' goal to eventually develop new courses within the Faculty of Management that focus on small businesses and bring new knowledge into the classroom.</p><p>In the meantime, Hunter and Kazakoff are busy with a number of research projects. The team, for example, has previously examined why small businesses fail (e.g., owners lack passion and focus) and how small enterprises survived the financial crisis (e.g., they were already operating in a fiscally conservative manner). Now the researchers are studying why small businesses typically do not partake in insolvency processes to deal with deteriorating financial situations (e.g., owners usually cannot afford the inherent expense).</p><p>Down the road, Hunter and Kazakoff will also look at small businesses' contributions to the local economy and how the agricultural industry has been affected by changes to the Canadian Wheat Board. While Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ administration, faculty, students and the City of Lethbridge all agreed that a westside location matched the vision of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s founders, the provincial government did not originally accept this recommendation, and instead proposed a local referendum to determine the site.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/wutzke-45th.jpg" alt="SU protest" title="Days after SU President Richard Wutzke spent an evening in a Lethbridge jail, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬&amp;#039;s first graduation class, along with faculty, marched in city streets to protest the proposed referendum that would decide the future site of the U of L campus."><div class="image-caption">Days after SU President Richard Wutzke spent an evening in a Lethbridge jail, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬&#039;s first graduation class, along with faculty, marched in city streets to protest the proposed referendum that would decide the future site of the U of L campus.</div></div></p><p>With philosophical lines drawn, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ students took to the streets, and on one fateful night, to the avenue in front of Lethbridge MLA John Landeryou's house. It wasn't long before Wutzke, the Students' Union president, was being hauled away by police, to be joined later by his right-hand man, Arthur Joevenazzo.</p><p>"Looking at it from the age of 63 and looking at it from the age of 18 are two different perspectives entirely," says Wutzke, now an artist living in the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal.</p><p>"Now when you look at it and you see a campus with 8,500 students and a third of the city's population is on the westside, it all seems so obvious that this was the right direction to go. But if you were picking up the tab for some kind of a pipe dream like this, I think you might say, "Wait a minute now"."</p><p>Student politics of the day had grown more and more confrontational and Wutzke admits he was elected SU president as an activist candidate. He says that as the debate ramped up, a culmination of factors led students out into the streets that evening.</p><p>"We were really keen on this type of activity," he says, noting that he and Joevenazzo were the debate champions of Alberta at the time. "There's a lot of testosterone pumping away in your veins and you're just looking for a scrap somewhere."</p><p>Fueled by what he calls "hearsay" and inspired by "the struggles of Mahatma Ghandi and the readings of Henry David Thoreau", an evening meeting with Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ faculty was the impetus for a placard-waving group to descend upon Landeryou's home.</p><p>"Today I'd be embarrassed to go forging out on an expedition like this with the kind of information we had," chuckles Wutzke. "We felt that somehow Mr. Landeryou was in cahoots with landowners surrounding the junior college who all stood to make very handsome profits by the expropriation of their property. Now, like I say, that is what we believed at the time and that's the information we acted on and we did so with righteous indignation."</p><p>When police arrived, they quickly identified Wutzke as a ringleader and put him in a police cruiser.</p><p>"I was taken into the police car and then the car was surrounded by students," says Wutzke. "Everybody sat down on the asphalt to prevent the police car from moving. Finally they basically threatened to run people over and they left with me. As soon as I was taken off the scene, my most able henchman, Arthur Joevenazzo, took up the charge and started the chanting again. They came back and picked him up too."</p><p>Wutzke and Joevenazzo were actually never arrested, as lore would have it. They were never charged, fingerprinted or put into a cell. Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ President Sam Smith got out of bed, drove down to the police station and vouched for the duo's character and Wutzke's father eventually came to drive him home.</p><p>Two days later, following the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s first convocation, a street march was held, culminating with a rally at Galt Gardens. Days later, with provincial eyes now on Lethbridge and its rebellious students, the government backed off and the westside plan was ratified.</p><p>"If I hadn't been there, somebody else would have been there," says Wutzke modestly. "What's important is that in that time in history, the students, even though they would not be the recipients of this glorious new campus, acted and didn't sit on their hands and change occurred. When I look back at that, there is a sense of pride. Not only that I had some personal role in it but that I was part of a student body that really had the guts to get up and be heard."</p><p>It's a spirit he continues to see today, and one he applauds.</p><p>"Sometimes students really get on your nerves because they are always agitating about something, but it shows you it's a very essential part of the democratic process."</p><p><strong><em>This story first appeared in the February 2012 edition of The Legend. While we are grateful for the increase, it is important to note that this will not fully offset the cost of increases we will face this year and beyond, including a rise in cost of living, utility prices and other associated items.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/mike-formal.jpg" alt="Mike Mahon" title="President Mike Mahon advocates a nimble and bold approach to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬&amp;#039;s future."><div class="image-caption">President Mike Mahon advocates a nimble and bold approach to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬&#039;s future.</div></div></p> <p>There will be no new capital projects funded for 2012 but the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ will continue to benefit from previously approved projects. These include the construction of the new residence building, significant renovations to existing structures and upgrades to the overall campus environment. In addition, the planning funding we received last year for a proposed 300,000 square foot academic complex is secure and that planning process will continue.</p> <p>Further announcements about a new CAIP Chair program are also expected. This will provide the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ an opportunity to compete for funding in areas that are still to be determined.</p> <p>The budget speech also referenced enhancements to student financial assistance programs. We welcome any effort made to change and ease the process by which students can qualify for financial assistance. We are keenly aware of the challenges students face, and are constantly working to enhance our own scholarship and bursary funding programs. To see the government make a commitment to contribute to this process is commendable.</p> <p>Again, much more will become clear in the coming weeks. Financial Planning is working hard to determine the impact of the budget on the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, and we look forward to having further discussions with the Minister and the Department of Advanced Education and Technology.</p> <p>Over the past 18 months I have spent a lot of time talking with and listening to many people in our Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community. As we process the announcements from the provincial government in relation to the budget, look ahead to our own budget planning process and begin work on the next iteration of our Strategic Plan, I believe it is important to look at where we have advanced in the framework of our current plan and consider the aspirations of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ as we move forward.</p> <p>I am beginning to work on drafting a discussion paper that will speak to some of the intentional directives that can help drive the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ forward within the context of our strategic directions. This paper will serve as a catalyst for future conversations on our next Strategic Plan. While our current Strategic Plan speaks to broad aspirations and potential strategies, it is time to build upon these strategies with concrete initiatives that support our goals.</p> <p>Already, these conversations have yielded intentional strategies such as the Recruitment, Retention and Integrated Planning team and enhanced support for our First Nations, M<em>é</em>tis and Inuit students.</p> <p>There is much more to talk about as we seek to move forward as a destination, comprehensive university, such as what it means to be a liberal education-based institution focused on increasing graduate education and research, our Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ structure and how it can be maximized to aid in our progression and the opportunity to develop an international strategy. These and other questions will be on the table and open for discussion as we look ahead.</p> <p>If we are going to be successful in moving forward, we need to be nimble and we need to be bold in our thinking and planning. As I begin to craft this discussion paper, I look forward to hearing from those who have thoughts about the future of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. This paper will commence a conversation that will carry on throughout our strategic planning process, offering many opportunities for input.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/government-alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Government of Alberta</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/provincial-government" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">provincial government</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/department-advanced-education-and-technology" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Department of Advanced Education and Technology</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/mike-mahon" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Mike Mahon</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/caip-chair" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">CAIP Chair</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/president" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">President</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/minister" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Minister</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Mahon pushes for bold approach to future" class="rdf-meta"></span> Tue, 14 Feb 2012 17:45:23 +0000 trevor.kenney 3276 at /unews 1971 Chinooks get their due /unews/article/1971-chinooks-get-their-due <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-f900567b1f1f3ee1f28abbf2b6d2708f"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">May 18, 2011</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>Long before the Pronghorns men's hockey team skated away with a national title on Maple Leaf Gardens ice, another group of young athletes brought glory to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.<br> <br> The 1971 U of L Chinooks women's basketball team won the institution's first national crown, the Canadian Junior Women's Basketball Championship, 23 years before Mike Babcock and company claimed the school's second. "We didn't have a lot of people come to our games. What really struck us though, was when we arrived back in Lethbridge from winning the championship, the only people at the airport to greet us were the boyfriends, the parents and the janitors; they supported us right to the end."<br> <br> With a roster stocked by southern Alberta products, the Chinooks proved that small could play big if given the opportunity.<br> <br> "Basketball was a comfort zone for many of us from the smaller communities," says Langille, a Taber native. "Those of us from high school, it seemed pretty daunting to make a university team but we managed."<br> <br> Linda Joncas (Dogterom) (BEd '72) grew up in Broxburn, went to McNally School as a youngster and then finished high school at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. The majority of the rest of the team came from the Coaldale area and the powerful Kate Andrews program.<br> <br> "It was really neat because we all kind of knew each other growing up, either playing with or against one another and then we reunited once we got to university," says Joncas.<br> <br> "For me, it was a struggle to go to school. I ended up being in a single parent home after my parents divorced, and I had to get student loans and an academic scholarship to get me through. Basketball and the team meant so much to me, it really helped me through what was a tough time for my family."<br> <br> Langille and Joncas were co-captains of the Chinooks in 1971, both playing out their final years before graduation. Each used their U of L degrees to carve out satisfying careers, Langille as a longtime provincial government employee and Joncas as a teacher and guidance counsellor. They both laud the personal learning environment the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ offered.<br> <br> "There's really something to be said for small schools and it was exciting to be a small school playing against the big universities. In terms of education, it was also such a great experience and years after, I would recognize that both in my career and when I would see other U of L graduates applying for positions in the provincial government," says Langille. "More often than not, they were very successful."<br> <br> Joncas says she is an unabashed supporter of the U of L experience, and was for years in her role as a high school guidance counsellor.<br> <br> "I remember coming back to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ 10 years after I'd graduated and as I was walking down the hall, somebody called my name and it was Dr. Petherbridge and he remembered me," she says. "That was very significant to me, 10 years after this man still knew who I was. There's a real student-centred focus at the U of L and in my experience, there's nothing much that compares."<br> <br> That the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ has now recognized the Chinooks for their significant contribution to the school's sporting history, brings the team back into the fold.<br> <br> "We're very appreciative, honoured and in a way humbled," says Joncas. "You don't realize at the time that it was a big deal. We were all young and it was fun and it was a "Wow, we did it" feeling, but in terms of the bigger perspective, I don't think we really understood the way we do now."<br> <br> The only regret the two have is that their coach, the late Wilma Winter, is not around to reconnect with her team and enjoy the long overdue accolades they are receiving.<br> <br> "It just breaks my heart actually," says Joncas before pausing to gain her composure. "She should have been here because she was some lady. Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Students' Union (<a href="http://www.ulsu.ca" rel="nofollow">ULSU</a>), it is a good opportunity to look back at what was accomplished in the previous year. From Fresh Fest to Humans vs. Zombies, hosting Peter Mansbridge and lobbying on behalf of students' interests, the ULSU had a very progressive and successful year.</p> <p>It all kicked off with the most successful Fresh Fest to date, continuing a tradition of excellence with the event that students can look forward to experiencing well into the future.</p> <p>Lectures by Peter Mansbridge, Dennis Edney (lawyer for Omar Khadr), various SACPA on Campus sessions and the Global Justice Student Speaker Challenge all contributed to the ULSU Executive Council's tradition of providing quality academic opportunities for all students.</p> <p>"It is important to offer these types of academic opportunities to our students so they can gain a greater understanding of world issues, and perhaps apply what they learn in a classroom setting to real world situations," says Taz Kassam, outgoing ULSU president. "It also offers students a chance to think critically and engage in healthy discussion with their peers on issues impacting the world."</p> <p>The Students' Union strives to offer services to students in an attempt to aid in the success of each and every student that enters the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge campuses in Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton. The ULSU also looks to enhance student engagement, and in the past year this was achieved by increasing the number of on-campus clubs, hosting a Municipal Mayoral Candidates Forum and creating new and exciting events like Humans vs. Zombies, Open Mic Night in the Zoo, Meltdown and ULSU Karaoke Shenanigans for<br> St. Patrick's Day.</p> <p>"We want to provide students with opportunities that create lasting memories of their time at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬," says Kassam. "Creating these memories is all part of the greater university experience and aids in retention."</p> <p>A number of traditional events from past years continued, including the ULSU/EUS Fashion Drive, the Volunteer Tax Program, the Last Lecture, Ender Bender, Last Class Bash and the IVCF/ULSU Used Book Sale.</p> <p>"These events have proven to be successful and of great value to our students and we want to continue the support we provide with events such as these," says Kassam.</p> <p>The ULSU achieved a landmark this year with students voting in favour of two referendum questions, one to tie ULSU Fees to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the second for a one-time ULSU fee increase of $5 per semester.</p> <p>"This will allow the Students' Union to continue to build upon the quality of events and services it provides to students, such as our Food Bank and funding for scholarships," adds Kassam. "It is of the utmost importance that the Students' Union maintain and build upon the level of service to our students attending all campuses."</p> <p>The ULSU had a very progressive year in terms of lobbying. Through the <a href="http://www.caus.net/" rel="nofollow">Council of Alberta Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Students</a> (CAUS), the ULSU lobbied the provincial government on key issues such as the regulation of non-instructional fees and allowing easier access for students to vote during provincial elections.<br> The <a href="http://www.casa-acae.com/" rel="nofollow">Canadian Alliance of Student Associations</a> (CASA) also helped the ULSU advance throughout the year by focusing their lobbying efforts on the Post-Secondary Student Support Program, a program designed to promote greater accessibility for Aboriginal students, offering more assistance to international students, as well as amendments to the Canadian Student Loan Program policy.</p> <p>"All in all, it has been a very successful year for the ULSU," says Kassam. "The support from all bodies on campus, and in the community, is greatly appreciated and the success could not have been achieved without this continued support. This is true not only for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, but also for a myriad of southern Alberta organizations.</p> <p>A constant and co-ordinated effort is therefore needed to overcome this distance. The recent Team Lethbridge initiative is an important part of that process, giving Lethbridge-area institutions and organizations the opportunity to make important inroads to both elected and non-elected government members.<br> <br> The U of L, along with 14 other organizations, joined Team Lethbridge as it travelled to Edmonton to meet with ministers, deputy ministers and other high-ranking officials. Led by <a href="http://www.chooselethbridge.ca/" rel="nofollow">Economic Development Lethbridge</a>, the overall message to government officials highlighted the contribution that Lethbridge and area make to strengthening the Alberta economy and improving the quality of life for Albertans and beyond.</p> <p>Local organizations, such as the <a href="http://www.lethbridge.ca" rel="nofollow">City of Lethbridge</a>, the <a href="http://www.lethbridgechamber.com/" rel="nofollow">Chamber of Commerce</a>, the <a href="http://www.alliedartscouncil.com/" rel="nofollow">Allied Arts Council</a>, <a href="http://www.lethbridgepolice.ca/" rel="nofollow">Lethbridge Regional Police Services</a> and the Lethbridge and District Exhibition, were able to send three representatives to cover off the flurry of meetings and events that were scheduled.</p> <p>President Dr. Mike Mahon, Vice-President (Research) Dr. Dan Weeks and myself attended on behalf of the U of L. In addition to participating in the meetings, the U of L and <a href="http://www.lethbridgecollege.ca/" rel="nofollow">Lethbridge College</a> created a separate opportunity for other Team Lethbridge members to meet with the government caucus, senior departmental officials, as well as Alberta Legislature senior staff.</p> <p>Enlightening the provincial government about the outstanding work being done at the U of L, as well as its key priorities moving forward is essential to maintaining a strong government relations strategy. The Team Lethbridge trip also serves as an excellent community relations opportunity, acting much like a retreat for Lethbridge organizations. The dialogue that occurs with the mayor, aldermen and community leaders is invaluable to the U of L.</p> <p>Administration, faculty members, staff and students take great pride in the roles they play in the community. It was equally evident from the trip that these community organizations place an equivalent value on their relationship with the U of L.</p> <p>Speaking in a unified voice offers strength and credibility to the message, which is one of the great benefits of the Team Lethbridge initiative. Furthermore, it creates a framework for future collaboration between local members.</p> <p>The fact that a number of MLAs privately exclaimed they'd like to see their communities participate in similar initiatives, underscores the effectiveness of the Team Lethbridge visit.</p> <p><em>For a look at the full issue of the November Legend in a flipbook format, follow this </em><a href="http://issuu.com/ulethbridge/docs/thelegend_november2010" rel="nofollow"><em>link</em></a><em>.</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/edmonton" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Edmonton</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/city/lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/lethbridge-college" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lethbridge College</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/team-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Team Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/allied-arts-council" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Allied Arts Council</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/lethbridge-college" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Lethbridge College</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/provincial-government" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">provincial government</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/alberta-legislature" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta Legislature</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/mike-mahon" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Mike Mahon</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/president" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">President</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/priorities-moving-forward" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">priorities moving forward</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/deputy-ministers" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">deputy ministers</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/mayor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">mayor</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/vice-president" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Vice-President</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Bridging the distance" class="rdf-meta"></span> Tue, 23 Nov 2010 21:04:26 +0000 trevor.kenney 4181 at /unews
