de Grandmaison exhibit opens

By capturing the faces of the First Nations people he encountered, Canadian painter Nicholas de Grandmaison (1892-1978) left a deeply personal record of history.

His documentation was grounded in the belief that the soul of a person was found in the face, and many of the individuals he painted during his prolific career were from the southern Alberta area, in particular the Blackfoot Confederacy and the Kainai and Piikani communities.

New works of art on display from the de Grandmaison collection, recently acquired by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Gallery as a gift from BMO Financial Group, feature 28 pastel portraits drawn from the 67-piece gift, which was received in 2012.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge holds the most comprehensive collection of de Grandmaison works in Canada, including more than 170 of his paintings, personal photo albums, letters and sound recordings of conversations he had with the individuals in his portraits.

"The works demonstrate de Grandmaison's deep respect for the people whom he painted and his exceptional skill at capturing the individual character of his sitters," says Art Gallery Director/Curator, Dr. Josephine Mills.

"What we are doing a bit differently with this exhibition is looking to the community to find relatives of the people de Grandmaison painted," Mills says.

"With our partners at the U of L Archives, we are working on a unique oral history concept that we hope adds to the value of the collection, and will help provide context for future audiences attending exhibitions of his works. We are encouraging members of the local and regional First Nations communities, and the broader Lethbridge community, to visit the gallery and possibly find a family connection."

Mills says information on the oral history project will be provided and people can contact the research team if they wish to participate.

To accommodate what Mills hopes is an increased interested in the exhibit, the gallery has extended hours for the run of the exhibition and is now open every Saturday, along with being open until 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays in addition to the regular 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekday hours.

"We are also hosting a planned informal series of presentations, 'Conversations about Nicholas de Grandmaison' which will occur on select Thursday evenings throughout the exhibition," Mills says.

From the 1930s until his death in 1978, Mills says that de Grandmaison was struck with an urgency to capture images of First Nations people because they were in a time of crucial transition with significant transformation in their lives.

"Having been a Russian aristocrat forced out of his homeland, a prisoner of war and eventually an immigrant to Canada, de Grandmaison felt intimately connected to the First Nations people. He felt he could relate to the major changes and upheaval they experienced."

"If we didn't have these paintings, we would be missing a part of our western heritage," Mills said. "While we tend to understand history as big events like battles, this piece of Canada's history focuses on the individuals and their stories. By showing these new works, and asking people for their stories, we hope to make future exhibitions that much more relevant."

Guist earns his directing chops with Madonna Painter

Sean Guist, MFA Candidate at the U of L, tells us about his experience as both an undergraduate and graduate student. He is directing the mainstage play The Madonna Painter or the Birth of a Painting by Michel Marc Bouchard, which ran from Mar. 20 - 24, 2012.

"The play takes place in 1918 in rural Quebec, and I did a lot of historical research, which included a trip to Quebec, to understand the period and its religious influences," Guist says. "The play is loosely based on events that happened in Bouchard's home town when he was young, and he wrote the play many years later while living in Florence, Italy. When he returned to Canada, after the play received critical acclaim abroad, he rewrote and translated the play a couple of times. The translation by Linda Gaboriau is the version we are using."

The story begins as World War I is ending and the Spanish flu is taking hold. A young priest, having recently arrived in the small parish, commissions a wandering Italian painter to create a fresco dedicated to the Virgin Mary to ward off the oncoming plague. As he chooses his model between four local virgins – all named Mary – the Madonna painter changes the fate of the entire community.

"Our cast is small, only seven characters," Guist explains. "Every character in the play has their own journey and their own beauty to discover. In turn, each actor has to go on that journey too; to discover their own beauty."

"The audience will experience great contemporary Canadian theatre that comes to life on a stunning set designed by faculty member and alumnus Roger Schultz (BFA '89), with costumes designed by Leslie Robison-Greene. Bouchard said he wanted the audience to leave with one element from the play: an image, a character, a line or a moment. I know this play both provokes and entertains – it's very beautiful, like a great work of art," says Guist.

The Madonna Painter a challenge for small cast

Religion, sexuality, death and secrets all collide in the small parish of Lac St-Jean, Quebec when The Madonna Painter or the Birth of a Painting by Governor General Award winning playwright Michel Marc Bouchard unravels its tantalizing tale. Playing Mar. 20-24 at 8 p.m. nightly in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre, The Madonna Painter beautifully caps off a captivating Mainstage season.

"It is a collision of ecstasies, a bouquet of lies disguised as a fable," wrote Bouchard. "The Madonna Painter or The Birth of a Painting is writ in scarlet pigments, in holy wine and haemoglobin, all the shades of red that flow though us, from our sex to our souls."

Conveying the poetic essence of the script and capturing its poignant imagery is the challenge confronting MFA candidate and director, Sean Guist.

The Madonna Painter plays nightly at 8 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre.

Lasting Images - Painters Eleven

In 1952, painter Alexandra Luke organized the first Canadian exhibition of abstract painting to be assembled on a national scale in Canada. In the brochure for the show, titled Canadian Abstract Exhibition, she wrote, "Painting should not stop with the already discovered beauty but continue searching."

Due to what the viewing public misunderstood as childish and insincere, abstract painting in Canada struggled to gain acceptance, especially in comparison to the nationally supported work of the Group of Seven, CP Rail's propagated images of the picturesque and traditional forms of landscape and portrait painting.

The abstract exhibition toured Canada in 1953, however it received mixed reviews. At a panel discussion at the Art Gallery of Toronto called Why Should We Buy Canadian Paintings?, writer and critic George Robertson suggested that department stores should be encouraged to sell original Canadian paintings using typical merchandising methods. Future Painters Eleven member William Ronald was in attendance, and his design work for the Robert Simpson Company prompted an exhibition of abstract and non-objective paintings at Simpson's department store. The subsequent show, titled Abstracts at Home, was meant to persuade the general public that abstract expressionist painting was just as much at home within the everyday as in an art gallery, and the exhibit featured works from various artists displayed in furnished rooms typical of modern living.

The promotion was a success for the store and the seven participating artists, resulting in a discussion to show their work together as a group. After agreeing to invite four other like-minded artists, it was decided that a meeting would take place at Luke's studio to discuss the idea of a large group exhibition of their works. At the historic meeting, Jack Bush, Oscar Cahen, Hortense Gordon, Tom Hodgson, Alexandra Luke, Jock Macdonald, Ray Mead, Kazuo Nakamura, William Ronald, Harold Town and Walter Yarwood decided to call themselves Painters Eleven, and from Feb. 12-28, 1954, at the Roberts Gallery in Toronto, the largest crowds ever drawn to the gallery viewed work from some of the most influential artists in history.

The Painters Eleven legacy lives on in the form of artwork now held in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Collection; an example of their influence and success. Unfortunately, after being acquired by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1978, the same cannot be said for Simpson's department store.

U of L Welcomes New Dean of Fine Arts and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Librarian Zimbabwe-born muralist Dr. Desmond Rochfort assumed the position of dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts in July, taking over for Dr. Ches Skinner, who had presided over the Faculty for the previous 10 years. Rochfort, who was president of the Alberta College of Art & Design in 1999, was most recently head of the School of Fine Arts at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. One of Britain's leading public mural artists, Rochfort was trained initially as a painter at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London before graduating with a master's in fine arts from the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He earned his PhD in art history from the Royal College of Art in London.

Also this summer, Edmonton-native Alison Nussbaumer began her term as the new university librarian. This is the fourth educational stop for Nussbaumer, who previously worked at Edmonton's Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) campus, as well as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan and most recently, Prince George's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Nussbaumer is president of the Canadian Association of College and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Libraries, as well as a past-president of both the Library Association of Alberta and the British Columbia Library Association. She achieved her undergraduate and library degrees from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta and her master of arts degree from Royal Roads ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Victoria, B.C.

Lasting Images - Head Shots

When combing through an archive as diverse and eclectic as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Collection, connections and patterns between multiple artworks often rise to the surface. Artists working in various time periods, with a wide range of media and from distinct aesthetic backgrounds, are still regularly drawn to depicting similar subject matter. The theme of portraiture is one of these recurring ideas; our contemporary digital snapshots of friends and family are akin to the allegorical figures in Renaissance paintings, or Caesar's profile on an ancient Roman coin. Artistic renderings of people evoke feelings of familiarity in the most basic human-to-human activity: eye contact and facial recognition. Whether the person depicted is well known or a stranger, the viewer is drawn in by the comfortable symmetry of eyes, nose and mouth and can feel a kinship with the subject without knowing them in the flesh.

Theatre of the extreme comes to campus

If you like theatre or paintings that are extremely physical, ironic and wordless, this could be the show for you.
Body Fragments, by Germany's Theaterlabor, is a high voltage performance inspired by the works of Anglo-Irish painter Francis Bacon. Body Fragments appears in the David Spinks Theatre, Jan. 12-13, 8 p.m. nightly, as part of the Now Showing Live Arts series.
Commissioned by the 2005 Venice Biennale, Body Fragments has toured dance and theatre festivals in Germany, Serbia, Czech Republic and Poland, and was awarded a prize for Most Innovative Performance at the 2007 Novi Sad festival in Serbia.
To create the Body Fragments performance, Theaterlabor explored the work of the painter Francis Bacon, who was noted for his unsettling presentation of the human body. The primary motifs in his paintings — a critical attitude toward the institutional church and a preoccupation with homosexuality — are infused with irony. Dynamic snapshots of movement, posture and attitude inspire the actors to extreme feats of expression.
"In this production, Theaterlabor has created an aesthetic language that mimics the alienating effects of Bacon's paintings," says Lisa Doolittle, the curator of Now Showing Live Arts.
Theaterlabor is a 24-year-old ensemble-based performance creation company based in Bielefeld, Germany. Operating independently of Germany's state-mandated theatre system, Theaterlabor has built and maintains its own venue, creates and tours new work on an ongoing basis, and hosts an annual festival of interdisciplinary performance, Festival 360˚. This is the company's first tour in Canada and is organized by Calgary's One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre.
"Body Fragments is an outstanding event for Lethbridge audiences and local visual and performing artists," says Doolittle. "The distinctively European flavour of both the company and performance is unusual, and it is not often that Canadian audiences are exposed to such physically-oriented, non-text based creation theatre."
In addition to the performances, the actor-creators of Theaterlabor will present a public talk about their work, Monday, Jan. 12, noon in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall. They will also conduct an open workshop in W420 on Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 1:40 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.
Tickets for Body Fragments are $20 regular and $15 for students, and are available at the U of L Box Office, 403-329-2616. A complimentary shuttle bus transports patrons from the north parking lot to the theatre entrance.
