As a result, Horns head coach Mike Hansen trusted what he saw on YouTube videos about a 22-year-old Australian post player who had not yet played at a post-secondary level. Likewise, Brine trusted his gut, advice from friends and family and that Hansen&rsquo;s portrayal of life at the U of L would match his vision. One semester into their relationship &ndash; so far, so good.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/BrandonBrine-main.jpg" title="Australian rookie Brandon Brine (centre) has made an immediate impact for the Horns men&amp;#039;s basketball program." alt=""><div class="image-caption">Australian rookie Brandon Brine (centre) has made an immediate impact for the Horns men&#039;s basketball program.</div></div></p><p>&ldquo;I always wanted to play college basketball whether it be in the U.S. or here, but I didn&rsquo;t really have the contacts to make it happen,&rdquo; says Brine, a native of Adelaide, South Australia. &ldquo; This just came at me out of nowhere and I jumped at it because it&rsquo;s always what I wanted to do.&rdquo;</p><p>Hansen adds that timing is everything.</p><p>&ldquo;I got the Horns&rsquo; coaching job very late in the year and we knew we needed to replace Derek Waldner as well as add some depth in the post,&rdquo; says Hansen. &ldquo;Brandon&rsquo;s video highlights immediately impressed me as his athleticism and great hands are two skills you can&rsquo;t teach. We did our due diligence and when we found out that Brandon had been a part of the Australian National Team program, we knew we had a potential steal of a recruit.&rdquo;</p><p>Brine&rsquo;s assimilation to Canadian life, Pronghorn culture and Canada West basketball has been virtually seamless. Despite a pre-season shoulder injury, the 6-foot-6 forward has forced his way into the Horns&rsquo; starting five and helped stake the Pronghorns to a 7-3 record in the first half. He capped off his rookie semester by scoring a career-high 27 points and hauling down nine rebounds as the Horns beat the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Regina 91-89 on Nov. 30. His fadeaway jumper with 4.5 seconds to play was the game-winning shot and he was later named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Male Athlete of the Week.</p><p>&ldquo;Once I got the strap off my shoulder and started to get confidence, that&rsquo;s when I started to play my game,&rdquo; says Brine. &ldquo; My theory is that I&rsquo;m never good enough. I&rsquo;m in here five/six days a week shooting and working on my game and just because I&rsquo;m in the starting five now, it doesn&rsquo;t mean I take my foot off the pedal. I&rsquo;m always working to compete with myself.&rdquo;<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:210px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/Horns-logo_10.jpg" alt=""></div></p><p>Brine was a multi-sport athlete as a youth but unlike many of his friends, who would be lured to pursue Aussie Rules Football, cricket or rugby, basketball was his sport of choice. He excelled in the Australian club system and participated in a host of international tours, playing in the U.S. four times, as well as in China and Japan.</p><p>With no post-secondary basketball options available in Australia, he was training with Adelaide&rsquo;s professional team when the U of L beckoned.</p><p>&ldquo;I really felt that it would take Brandon a year to get acclimated to southern Alberta and CIS basketball, but there are certain people who are open to new experiences and Brandon is one of them,&rdquo; says Hansen. &ldquo; He has made Lethbridge his home and has fit in and embraced the opportunity to experience a new culture and area of the world.&rdquo;</p><p>Brine is studying kinesiology with the goal of becoming a physiotherapist, and is excited about being back in the classroom.</p><p>&ldquo;Probably the biggest adjustment I&rsquo;ve had to make is the school aspect, just getting back into doing homework,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;I graduated from high school in 2008 and haven&rsquo;t done any post-secondary schooling until now. It&rsquo;s been a little bit of an adjustment but after the first month, it&rsquo;s just become routine.&rdquo;</p><p>It&rsquo;s also becoming routine to see his name pop on the stat sheet. Brine says the run-and-gun style of play the Horns employ suits his game.</p><p>&ldquo;The one thing I&rsquo;ve had over most post players I&rsquo;ve played against is my athleticism and being able to get up and down the floor,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;I prefer to have a face-up game. I&rsquo;m trying to work on my post game to become a little bit more lethal, but right now my strength is to face the basket and either shoot the open shot or take the guy off the dribble.&rdquo;</p><p>He&rsquo;s quickly adapted to the Canadian lifestyle. He spent the holiday season with his girlfriend and her family, says he loves the snow and is thrilled to be immersed in a basketball community.</p><p>&ldquo;Back in Australia, the biggest crowd I would have played in front of was 150 to 200 people. So here, when you hit a three-pointer or get a dunk, the crowd goes nuts and it&rsquo;s a great feeling. It gives you that extra shot of adrenaline and keeps the team rolling. I love that.&rdquo;</p><p>The ability Hansen sees in Brine is unbridled.</p><p>&ldquo;I believe he has the potential to be an All-Canadian, he is that gifted,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo; He needs to improve defensively and develop a more consistent back to the basket game, but in my opinion he is the most athletic player in the league.&rdquo;</p><p>Maybe even more impressive is how Brine has fit into the Horns program, a testament not only to Brine and his upbringing but also to the culture of basketball in southern Alberta and of the U of L campus.</p><p>&ldquo;The people, the town, everything just seems so homey. I feel so comfortable here,&rdquo; says Brine. &ldquo;Straight away, Mike&rsquo;s been really good introducing me to everyone, my teammates are great &ndash; it just feels like a second home.&rdquo;</p><p>Hansen knows full well the value the community brings to the program.</p><p>&ldquo;I came here 23 years ago thinking I&rsquo;d be here for four years, get my degree and head home,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo; Then you discover you&rsquo;re not only welcomed to southern Alberta, we adopt you as one of our own. Brandon is a special kid, he comes from a great family and it&rsquo;s reflected in his character. I think that&rsquo;s what he&rsquo;s enjoyed the most of being here, he has a home away from home.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-company-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Company:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/company/canada-west" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Canada West</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/pronghorns" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Pronghorns</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/derek-waldner" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Derek Waldner</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/brandon-brine" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Brandon Brine</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/mike-hansen" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Mike Hansen</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-sportsgame-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">SportsGame:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/sports-game/basketball" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">basketball</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/sports-game/rugby" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">rugby</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/sports-game/cricket" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">cricket</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Gamble pays off for both Brine and Horns" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 09 Jan 2014 23:25:30 +0000 trevor.kenney 5927 at /unews Gallagher, Waldner earn top athlete honours /unews/article/gallagher-waldner-earn-top-athlete-honours <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-5645d5194005c4e8eabc21bd5263677c"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">April 15, 2013</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>Championship thrower Kayla Gallagher and four-time Academic All Canadian basketball player Derek Waldner were named Pronghorn Female and Male Athlete of the Year respectively this past weekend as Pronghorn athletics held its annual Blue and Gold Banquet.<br> <br> Over 275 athletes, administrators and special guests were in attendance for the supper and awards ceremony at the Lethbridge Lodge. In many instances, that&#39;s all it is &ndash; talk. For the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men&#39;s basketball team, fifth-year seniors Derek Waldner and Julian Spear Chief-Morris embody Horns&#39; culture.</p><p>&quot;They have been cornerstones of transformational change in our program,&quot; says head coach Dave Adams. &quot; We went from pretenders to contenders in the time that they were here, and I cannot say enough about the sacrifices that both of them made to push the program to where it is now. Anything that&#39;s happened in the program in the last few years has been built on the backs of these guys.&quot;</p><p>While each of them took different paths to the Horns&#39; program, and each battled through his own adversity, it was fitting to see them walk off the court together in triumph, checking out of their final Canada West game to a standing ovation from the home crowd, a victory well in hand.</p><p>&quot;It&#39;s really nice in life, because you don&#39;t see it all the time, when people will put in the work and then get rewarded for it and that&#39;s happened for both guys,&quot; says Adams.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img alt="Derek Waldner" src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/legacy-waldner.jpg" title="Derek Waldner, left, won the majority of these position battles over the course of his five-year career with the Pronghorns. Photo by Paula Gorman</div></div></p><p>Neither of the two had an easy road to success.</p><p>Waldner, an Okotoks product, admits that the U of L was really the only Canadian Interuniversity Sport program to recruit him out of high school and that he had no promises or expectations about what his role would be when he arrived on campus.</p><p>Spear Chief-Morris began his career at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Victoria. A local high school star at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, he chose to head west to play for the nationally-renowned Vikes, but after two seasons in Victoria and an invitation from Adams to come back to Lethbridge in hand, he returned to his roots.</p><p>He subsequently had to sit out a transfer season and then early into his first year with the Horns, suffered a devastating knee injury. A year later he was back on the court but it really wasn&#39;t until the last few months of his senior season that Spear Chief-Morris was able to play to his abilities.</p><p>&quot;I didn&#39;t really have basketball in mind when I was recovering, I just wanted to be a healthy person again because I spent a whole summer not being able to run, not being able to jump, having to learn how to walk again,&quot; he says. &quot;I just decided I&#39;d worry about getting healthy first and in the end I decided I wanted to play again.&quot;</p><p>All the while, Waldner was emerging from obscurity to become one of the best rebounders in the country and one of Canada West&#39;s top post threats. A double-double machine (double figures in both points and rebounds), he would eventually set the all-time rebounding record at the U of L and lead the CIS in rebounding his senior season.</p><p>&quot;It was the goal for me when I came out of high school,&quot; says Waldner. &quot; My coach, Sam Aiello, when I graduated he told me to go get that record, because Nick Baldwin, who had the record before me, was his product as well.&quot;</p><p>The Horns flourished with both Waldner and Spear Chief-Morris in the lineup, but it wasn&#39;t only court success that defined their time in blue and gold. Waldner, a biochemistry major, is a four-time Academic All-Canadian, while Spear Chief-Morris, studying urban and regional studies, has achieved All-Canadian status three times.</p><p>&quot;I&#39;m a competitive person and anything I do I want to be the best at, so walking into the classroom is the same thing. Why not try and be the best at what you do?&quot; asks Spear Chief-Morris. &quot;That&#39;s why I push myself in the classroom, if I&#39;m going to do something I&#39;m going to do it well.&quot;</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img alt="Julian Spear Chief-Morris" src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/legacy-julian.jpg" title="Julian Spear Chief-Morris was a mentor both on and off the court to the next generation of Pronghorns. Photo by Paula Gorman</div></div></p><p>While he doesn&#39;t tout himself as a role model for First Nations teens, he recognizes that his success both on and off the court can serve as a positive motivating factor for the Aboriginal community.</p><p>&quot;I don&#39;t think I&#39;ve ever looked at myself as a role model but now that I&#39;m getting older, I&#39;ve been put in situations where I&#39;ve been confronted with that,&quot; he says. &quot; I think I definitely do serve as a role model in some respects to some of the kids out there on the Reserve. I&#39;m really just trying to live my life the right way, so if people look up to me, that&#39;s great.&quot;</p><p>For Waldner, combining the rigors of Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ with athletics was never a question, it&#39;s always been a focus.</p><p>&quot;It just takes a little discipline, it takes staying in and studying instead of going out with your buddies some times,&quot; he says. &quot;Time management is the biggest aspect, and having basketball and Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ at the same time has really taught me that life skill where time management will never be an issue for me.&quot;</p><p>Both Spear Chief-Morris and Waldner have plans to pursue graduate studies, and even may look at professional basketball opportunities should it fit in with their academic ambitions. More than anything though, the two are not content to revel in their glory days as Horns basketball players, knowing this is just a stage in their life plan.</p><p>&quot;I&#39;m just excited for what&#39;s next,&quot; says Spear Chief-Morris. &quot; My time here was wonderful but all things pass and I&#39;m looking ahead.&quot;</p><p>It&#39;s that attitude that Adams says will live on well past their time in uniform.</p><p>&quot;What a blessing in a program when you have two guys that not only come into practice and set the work ethic example on the court, but then they back it up by what they do in the classroom as well,&quot; says Adams. &quot;Imagine how blessed we are to have a locker room where that is the voice of leadership. It&#39;s a fabulous culture that those guys will leave as a legacy in that locker room.&quot;</p><p><strong>GET THE FACTS</strong></p><p>&middot; Both players had their parents in attendance for their final CIS game<br /><br /> &middot; Waldner had 252 rebounds this season to set a new Horns&#39; single-season record and lead all CIS players. His career total of 874 rebounds is also a Horns&#39; record and the fifth highest total in Canada West history<br /><br /> &middot; Both players credited Horns alumni for truly representing Horns culture. &quot;I know that I&#39;ve played for two universities now and the support, not just from the community but from the alumni is not comparable,&quot; says Spear Chief-Morris. &quot; It really is a blessing to have a group of people who honestly care about who you are and your success.&quot;</p><p><em>This story first appeared in the March 2013 issue of the Legend. With the weekend split versus the Fraser Valley Cascades last weekend, the Horns still remain two games out of playoff spot with only two games to play.<br> <br> Even though they do not control their own fate, the only thing they can control is their own performance. For the team to have any chance of playing next weekend the goal is simple &ndash; win both games this weekend at home versus the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Winnipeg (5-17 CW).<br> <br> In addition to winning both games, the Horns will need both Calgary and Fraser Valley to lose both of their remaining games to end in a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot. In a three way tie it is unclear who would come out ahead until all the games are completed.<br> <br> After struggling for much of the season, first-year Wesmen Head Coach Mike Raimbault has his troops playing their best basketball of the season. The Wesmen have won three of their last four games, including a road sweep last weekend of the Brandon Bobcats.<br> <br> On paper, there is not much separating the Horns and Wesmen. The Wesmen score 74.4 points to the Horns 72.9 and defensively it's nearly dead even with the Wesmen's 87.2 slightly better than the Horns, who on average allow 87.6 points per game.<br> <br> Third-year post Derek Waldner was a force last weekend for the Horns recording his sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season and moved into fourth in the conference in rebounding. With 30 rebounds last weekend, Waldner is now averaging 9.1 rebounds per game.<br> <br> This weekend will also mark the final conference games in a Horns uniform for a pair of seniors. Horns leading scorers Randy Davis and Danhue Lawrence will complete their collegiate eligibility this year. Davis sits 12th in the conference, averaging 16.9 points, while Lawrence is four spots lower, averaging 14.9 points a night.<br> <br> Tip-off for both Friday and Saturday night is set to follow the
