ReSET on-campus resource a repository of innovative and effective teaching methods for all to access

What began as a working group focused on effective teaching methods during the pandemic has become an innovative resource to building a more inclusive post-secondary environment — and it’s open to teachers in all sectors of education.

ReSET (Resources to Support Excellence in Teaching), a collaborative effort to support excellence in teaching on campus, is a first-of-its-kind initiative led by academic staff and supported by the Teaching Centre at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses and public institutions were faced with restrictions to in-person gathering. ULethbridge was no exception. Academic course delivery pivoted to online instruction with an uncertain timeline as to when in-person classes could resume.

Specific focus was placed on teaching, particularly around accommodations, inclusivity and flexibility, explains Dr. Sheila McManus, history professor in the Department of History and Religion. Faced with these challenges, a taskforce of ULethbridge educators came together in 2020 to brainstorm ways to provide quality learning instruction in a blended environment. The initial goal was to create a plan for the Fall 2021 semester. Driven by the creativity they witnessed across the institution, the group agreed to continue the momentum.

"We wanted to seize the moment of heightened attention to teaching and create a baseline for excellence on campus," says McManus. “We all agreed to continue working to build something transformative for our colleagues, inspired by the excellence, innovation and inclusivity we had witnessed during the worst of the pandemic.”

David Hinger (BFA - Multimedia '03; MEd ’07), Executive Director of the Teaching Centre and Agility, says the original goal of the project was to highlight innovative teaching practices that were adopted during the pandemic.

“The ReSET project has become so much more under the leadership of Dr. McManus and the working group.”

What has emerged is a three-part project — defining the five features of excellence in teaching, sharing research to support these five characteristics, and an in-house repository of teaching resources. McManus says the ReSET project is unique to ULethbridge as it creates a shared baseline of language around teaching excellence and provides an open-access repository for academic staff professional development both internally and beyond.

“For a long time, there's been this notion that it’s harder to specify what excellence in teaching looks like. That's not true. We know what excellence in teaching looks like. It's actually very easy to define. So, we hammered out easy, accessible language for our colleagues,” says McManus.

The five features of excellence delve into the importance of caring about students and their success, inclusivity, adaptivity, and creating engaging learning environments and effective assessments. Each feature is supported by a research and resource list with suggested readings and videos.

The repository is a way to discover methods of “extraordinary teaching happening on this campus,” says McManus, and is searchable by various features. “If you want inspiration and ideas around assessments, course outlines or in-class activities, or if you’re new to teaching, or just want to see what your colleagues on campus are doing, we’re slowly building this repository of knowledge to draw from.”

Submissions to the in-house repository are being encouraged from ULethbridge academic staff to grow the resource base. Everything shared is protected under a Creative Commons licence as part of Opus.

“Whether it's a course outline, a really neat assignment that you did in class, or maybe it's a conference paper that you gave about your teaching, we're widely encouraging submissions from people,” says McManus. “Anything to do with excellence in teaching on this campus, if they’re willing to share.”

The nature of teaching can often be isolating, explains Hinger, so having an opportunity to share resources with like-minded peers can broaden the perspectives of educators and contribute to more successful outcomes for students.

“We don't typically spend a lot of time sharing with our colleagues what we're doing in our classrooms. This is an opportunity to share, which is really exciting,” he says. “It highlights for me the culture we have on campus as well, and that academic staff here are passionate about our students and passionate about teaching excellence.”

ReSET will be featured during two panels at the SPARK Teaching Symposium on April 24, 2024. At 11:45 a.m., members of the ReSET team will assist anyone wanting to upload their material to the repository. At 2:45 p.m., selected resources for first-year classes shared to the repository will be featured as part of a panel on teaching for retention.

Examining the fallacy of borders and the lies they tell us, focus of upcoming PUBlic Professor Series event

Most people today, if they think about borders at all, can be forgiven for believing lines on a map are real things serving useful purposes. Demarcating the edges of nation-states is responsible for everything from shoring up sovereignty, nationalism and colonialism, to drawing the lines between “us” and “them.”

Dr. Sheila McManus says the talk explores why we believe the lies borders tell us, and why we shouldn’t.

Dr. Sheila McManus, professor in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Department of History, sums it up by declaring succinctly, “Borders are stupid.” In fact, it’s the title of their upcoming PUBlic Professor Series talk on Thursday, Nov. 23, 7 p.m., at the Sandman Signature Lodge.

McManus says that by taking a closer look at the long, messy histories of borders, and their even messier contemporary functions, we will discover those invisible lines are, at best, lying to us. This talk explores why we believe the lies borders tell us, and why we shouldn’t.

“Borders are stupid for a few different reasons,” says McManus. “They are not real. They have very real consequences because we think they are real but they’re kind of lying to you and I want people to think differently about what they are and how they function in the world.”

McManus is a member of the Lethbridge Border Studies research group whose research focuses primarily on the history of the borderlands of the North American West. McManus is the author of The Line Which Separates: Race, Gender, and the Making of the Alberta-Montana Borderlands (��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Nebraska Press and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta Press, 2005); Choices and Chances: A History of Women in the U.S. West, (Wiley, 2010); and Both Sides Now: Writing the Edges of the North American West (Texas A&M Press, 2022).

This is the third of the six-part PUBlic Professor Series of talks. Initiated in 2014, the monthly lecture series is designed to spark thought-provoking discussions and bring a diverse group of experts and researchers from the ULethbridge campus right into the community.

Innovative history professor Dr. Sheila McManus to receive Distinguished Teaching Award

Known as an innovator in the classroom, Dr. Sheila McManus has developed a set of teaching values that gives her students a unique learning experience by using active learning strategies and student-centred assignments that emphasize critical thinking skills over memorization.

A conscientious and beloved history professor, McManus approaches teaching as scholarship and consistently works to improve her practice. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is proud to present Dr. Sheila McManus with the Distinguished Teaching Award. She will receive the award at 2018 Spring Convocation, Ceremony II on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gymnasium.

The core values that have guided her teaching practice from its earliest days centre around maintaining respect for her students as adults and learners. McManus has reduced or eliminated lectures in her classes to focus on student-centred active learning opportunities. These include workshops where students gain hands-on experience with primary sources or develop specific research and writing skills, as well as classroom debates about issues and evidence. She has replaced exams with writing assignments designed to foster critical thinking skills.

McManus is equally committed to helping other teachers improve. Since 2012, she has co-facilitated teaching workshops for faculty and instructors at the U of L, Lethbridge College and Olds College. During her two-year term as Board of Governors’ Teaching Chair her initiatives included creating a “Doors Open” series for faculty to visit the classrooms of and observe some of the best teachers at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. She has also led workshops for K-12 teachers during the annual teachers’ conventions in Lethbridge and Calgary. McManus makes it a priority to keep up with the latest research in the field of teaching and learning in higher education, so she can apply it in her own classrooms.

McManus completed her Bachelor of Arts (Honours and Co-op) at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary and Master of Arts at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Victoria. In 2001, she completed a doctoral degree at York ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. After a post-doctoral fellowship at Yale ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, she joined the history department at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Winnipeg. McManus joined the U of L’s Department of History in 2003 and became a full professor in 2016.

The Distinguished Teaching Award was established in 1987 to recognize the importance of teaching to the philosophy and goals of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

McManus reflects on her time as Convocation Chief Marshal

As the campus community prepares to celebrate the Spring 2016 Convocation this week, we caught up with history professor Dr. Sheila McManus who says her role as chief marshal is, “The best job — ever.”

“As chief marshal, you have that final moment with every single student as they get ready to cross the stage, and you get to say ‘congratulations’ to each of them,” she says. “You get to play this little tiny part in their tremendous accomplishment. It really is the best job ever.”

McManus describes her time as Convocation Chief Marshal as, “The best job — ever.”

Since first being handed the mace in 2013, McManus has witnessed nearly 3,000 students go from graduand to graduate. As chief marshal, she leads a team of seven other marshals and carries the mace while leading the academic procession and recession.

“The ceremony officially begins when we carry the mace into the room and it ends when we leave the room,” she explains. “We really are the protector of the ceremony. It’s a very specific symbolic combination: us, the mace and the students on their convocation day. That’s what we (the marshals) exist for.”

Even after all the convocation ceremonies McManus has attended, she says every ceremony is still emotional and makes her tear up.

“It’s that moment when we are walking up the hill and the parents and families are lined up waiting to take a photo of their student,” she says. “It’s also those moments after the ceremony when you see a student taking a photo with children and you realize, she’s a mother, or when you see the large extended families gathered or when you hear all the different languages being spoken and you realize just how multi-cultural the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is.”

Known for her iconic purple shoes, McManus is looking forward to convocation ceremonies this week with incredible excitement, and a little bit of sadness. The afternoon ceremony on Friday will be her last as chief marshal and she will turn the mace over to Dr. Olu Awosoga, a professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

“I’m sad to be done. I am happy that I am turning it over to a very dear friend who will be an amazing chief marshal. And I’m so grateful that I got to do this job.”

Some facts:

- The mace weighs 16 pounds. One end features three elements—mortarboard, gavel and open book. The mortarboard represents the Senate and symbolizes academia with all of its connotations. The gavel represents the Board of Governors and symbolizes management and control, while the open book represents the General Faculties Council and symbolizes teaching, scholarly activity and service. The other end of the mace features a globe set in pronghorn antelope antlers. These represent the mascot of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and our commitment to the physical dimensions of the scholar. The globe symbolizes the universality of knowledge and liberal education in all its dimensions.

- The chief marshal decides if the procession walks inside or outside. “Unless it really isn’t possible, I always choose outside because the walk up the hill is regarded as part of the student experience at the U of L,” says McManus.

Some words of insight Sheila passes onto Olu as he prepares to take on the role of chief marshal.

- “Walk slowly. The walk up the hill is much slower than you realize.”
- “Wear cool shoes and bring dry socks for the afternoon ceremony.” (Hence the iconic purple golf shoes)
- “Wear shoulder pads (I may even bootleg mine to you). Between walking up the hill and standing as the students take their seats in the gym, you will have the 16-pound mace on your shoulder for a good 25 minutes.”
- “At some point during the procession up the hill, turn around. The view of the students lined up is amazing.”

McManus appointed Board of Governors Teaching Chair

An accomplished researcher, lecturer and author, Dr. Sheila McManus is one of the most respected educators from within the Faculty of Arts and Science and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Department of History.

Dr. Sheila McManus says peer mentoring will be a major focus of her work as a Board of Governors Teaching Chair over the next two years.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is proud to appoint McManus to a two-year term as a Board of Governors Teaching Chair, commencing July 1, 2014.

The concrete joys of teaching help balance McManus's research interests. McManus describes her research specialty as “the history of invisible lines” because her primary interests include the history of the borderlands of the North American West. Her current book project is Both Sides Now: Writing the Borderlands of the American West (under contract to Texas A&M Press). Her earlier work includes the 2005 monograph, The Line Which Separates: Race, Gender, and the Making of the Alberta-Montana Borderlands; the 2008 anthology One Step Over the Line: Toward a History of Women in the North American Wests, co-edited with Elizabeth Jameson; and her 2011 textbook Choices and Chances: A History of Women in the U.S. West.

McManus grew up in Calgary and first studied at the post-secondary level at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary, completing her bachelor’s degree in 1992. After finishing her master’s degree at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Victoria in 1994 and her PhD at York ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in 2001, McManus was appointed the first Post-Doctoral Associate at the Howard Lamar Center for the Study of Frontiers and Borders at Yale ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Her teaching career began in 2002 when she taught American and Canadian history as an assistant professor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Winnipeg. She joined the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 2003.

The Board of Governors Teaching Chair is a two-year position (with two-course relief per year) that requires candidates to submit a teaching-related proposal for the duration of their term. The Chairs then serve on the Teaching Centre’s Advisory Council and work with council on its projects throughout the two-year term.

“I’m delighted to renew my connection to the Teaching Centre, after being a Teaching Fellow with the centre in 2012,” says McManus.

As a Teaching Fellow, she helped recruit half a dozen colleagues from a variety of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ departments to create the (He)art of Teaching drop-in peer mentoring program. Peer mentoring is going to be a key theme of her work as BOG chair.

A historic example of support

Sheila McManus doesn't like to brag, but when it comes to supporting students, she and her department have every right to toot their own horn.

A professor in the Department of History at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, McManus is familiar with the financial struggles many students face.

"I was able to get my degrees with the help of student loans and jobs," she recalls. "The stress of working while going to school was a defining characteristic of all three of my degrees."

Despite facing those financial challenges as a student, McManus felt it was important to give back to her community.

"As broke as I was as a student, I was aware of how privileged I was in this world," she says. "I didn't have time to volunteer, but I thought I could find 10 dollars a month to contribute to causes I cared about."

Now that she is established in her career, McManus's philanthropic goals have grown.

"When I became a faculty member here, I felt it was time to take it up a notch and see how much I could contribute," she says. "It was the natural thing to do to start helping students here."

McManus became a donor and volunteer for the Supporting Our Students (SOS) campaign, an annual campaign that allows faculty and staff to contribute to scholarships and bursaries for students. McManus knows firsthand what this kind of support can mean for students.

"Any financial support we can get directly into students' hands means less stress, fewer hours working a part-time job and more time spent on being students and learning," she emphasizes.

Amazingly, McManus's entire department donates to SOS. In 2012, for the fourth year in a row, every member of the history department contributed to the campaign.

"This is a real point of pride for our department," says McManus. "No other department has hit 100 per cent participation four years in a row. We are so proud!"

McManus hopes her department's ongoing participation in SOS shows students how much they care. On an individual level, she is happy to help students who are working their way through the same struggles she faced.

"It's a fantastic feeling to be a part of this," she says. "I'm helping my students, I'm helping my university and I'm helping my community."

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is celebrating the achievements of faculty members who authored books in the past two years with the 2011 Book Awards.
