Since June 2017, the Department of Caretaking at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's has been taking the lead on making sure Styrofoam from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ isn’t going to be taking up space in the landfill.

The U of L is the first university in Canada to recycle Styrofoam on its campus. It has enlisted the services of StyroGo, a business out of Calgary, which brings a special Styrofoam recycling truck to the Lethbridge campus that shreds and melts waste Styrofoam into highly condensed blocks that are then re-sold to companies that use the recycled products to make into many different kinds of products, including toys and architectural molding.

According to Manager of Facilities – Caretaking, Judy Jaeger, recycling Styrofoam has proven to be a good choice for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. While recycling the material is more expensive than traditional disposal methods, the sustainability benefits are outweighing the costs.

Since first starting its Styrofoam recycling program in June 2017, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ has recycled 490 lbs of Styrofoam, which is roughly equivalent to the volume of 4,000 basketballs. As a result, the U of L has reduced its greenhouse gas production by 1.69 Tn. As disposal fees for Styrofoam at the Lethbridge landfill increase over time and the technology for Styrofoam recycling continues to improve, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ anticipates that the financial incentive to recycle Styrofoam will only increase.

In the meantime, the U of L is also working to reduce the amount of Styrofoam coming to campus by ensuring that its Request for Proposals limit the packaging suppliers are allowed to send to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.

Members of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community can make sure that waste Styrofoam from their departments ends up being recycled instead of going to the landfill by leaving Styrofoam next to the central garbage bins in their area. Styrofoam must be clean of tape, food or other materials to be recycled. Caretaking staff will then make sure it gets collected with other Styrofoam for recycling. She felt compelled to help them.

"Approximately 25 per cent of the staff in caretaking are students. Because of my first-hand interaction, I see how hard students have to work on a daily basis. Scholarships and bursaries make a big difference; some students couldn't afford to be here without them," she says. "If students get help with their tuition, then they can work less and spend more time focusing on their studies.

It's a message Jaeger is taking to the broader Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ campus in her role as co-Chair of this year's Supporting Our Students campaign. Since its inception in 2005, the annual fundraiser has seen more than 650 Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ faculty, staff and retirees contribute more than $1.5 million towards student scholarships and bursaries. And while it's an impressive dollar figure, Jaeger is determined to see it grow larger.

"I want to blow the other records out of the water," says Jaeger enthusiastically.

As Jaeger explains, donations need not be large to make an impact.

"All I want is five dollars a month from everyone on campus. That will be a lot of money in the end."

And while Jaeger encourages colleagues to give for the benefit of students, she also recognizes that the support ultimately has an added benefit for faculty and staff.

"If it wasn't for the students, none of us would be here," she says. "Supporting Our Students gives employees a way to support them. Here at the U of L, we really are part of a strong community where people take care of each other. This results in poor sleep quality that makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnea is one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness. Another symptom can be snoring and pauses in your breathing while sleeping.

This month's Wellness Lunch and Learn is focusing on sleep apnea. Shaun Wojtowicz, owner of Chinook Respiratory Care, will be on campus Nov. 17 in TH277 to discuss symptoms, signs and treatment for sleep apnea. These breathing pauses – called apneas or apnea events – last for 10 to 30 seconds, maybe longer.
