The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Community offers its most sincere condolences to the family, many friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Shirley DeBow, a Lethbridge-based community volunteer, social worker and educator who served as the 10th Chancellor of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge from 2003 – 2007.

Shirley passed away on Monday, March 25, at age 68.

She is survived by her husband Gerald DeBow, and their three children – Jeremy, Suzanne and Adrienne – and their families.

A memorial service has yet to be confirmed.

This notice will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Shirley served the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and broader community with enthusiasm, good humour and dedication, and participated in a host of community activities as Chancellor that served to strengthen the relationship between the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the Lethbridge community at large.

She served on the U of L Senate from 1993 to 2001, as well as a number of U of L-specific committees and groups, and received an Honorary Degree from the U of L in 2008 for her extensive community service efforts.

During her time as Chancellor, she either hugged or (was hugged by) more than 6,000 students who were welcomed into the U of L family and helped establish the Senate Volunteer award, as well as an endowed Senate Scholarship for students, among other outreach activities.

"The U of L has long been fortunate to have strong community support and committed volunteers and Shirley DeBow was very much one of those people," said Dr Bill Cade, who served as U of L President during Shirley's term as Chancellor.

"She devoted much time and effort to ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ activities over the years, especially in her role as ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Chancellor. This was a job that Shirley loved and was ideally suited for. She performed her duties with much class and with genuine interest in the well being of our students.

Cade said that Shirley also served as an outstanding ambassador for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and worked tirelessly with the broader southern Alberta community to advance the U of L.

"One of Shirley's most significant legacies was the establishment of the Senate Scholarship Fund. Shirley provided leadership at a critical time when the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Senate launched a drive to raise scholarship funding for outstanding students. They were very successful and the fund continues to this day. It was a pleasure to work with Shirley in her capacity as Chancellor of the U of L. Elsa and I will miss her and we offer our condolences and best wishes to her family at this time."

Shirley's care and concern for people extended far beyond her immediate family, and she was forever a Maritimer, no matter how much time she spent on the prairies. Shirley was born in Nova Scotia (delivered by the doctor-father of Canadian music artist Anne Murray)and spent her childhood on Cape Breton Island, where her father served as an Anglican priest.

She attended Dalhousie ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, the Maritime School of Social Work, and, after moving to Alberta in 1966, attended the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary Faculty of Social Work.

She accepted a position as a social worker with the Government of Alberta, then progressed to NAIT, where she launched the first Social Services Worker program.

Shirley took this experience to the newly-established Grant MacEwan Community College in 1971, where, as the institution's 5th full-time employee, she established several key outreach programs and was particularly proud of an outreach program that she personally delivered to remote and northern locations of the province. She became the Head of the Social Services program, and was an instructor within the program until moving to Lethbridge in 1984.

In Lethbridge, she taught at Lethbridge Community College on a part-time basis and worked as a Social Worker/Supervisor of Social Work Programs at FamilyCare Inc., training and certifying social workers in several communities in southern Alberta, including the Town of Claresholm, the Kainai first Nation and the Siksika First Nation.

She will be remembered as the ultimate grandmother who was fiercely proud of her family, as a gracious host who welcomed people from all walks of life into her world, and as a community volunteer who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for organizations in need.

Open Mike - October 2012, Welcoming new Chair Gord Jong and celebrating Homecoming

The start of a new academic semester is always full of activity but it seems to have been especially busy on campus this fall.

One of the added responsibilities for units throughout the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ was the introduction of a new budget process and budget cycle. As a result, what was once a September to March cycle has been amended to an April to October schedule, putting us in the midst of the budget process as a new semester opened.

Just recently, a new open forum concept was introduced to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community at which department and unit heads from across campus spoke to their strategic priorities and how they fed into their budgeting decisions.

President Mahon invites everyone to enjoy the Homecoming and Convocation 2012 celebrations.

This was our first attempt at creating a more transparent process and it was good to see the many people who attended segments of the forum or watched via the web from our Calgary and Edmonton campuses.

We are in a time where budgets will be challenged and it is important for us to have as much transparency as possible as we manage our way through the process, trying to do the best job we can of maximizing our resources as we move the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ forward.

For the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community to see what factors are at play in establishing budget priorities is an integral part of understanding the process as it relates to the whole of campus.

By now you will have heard of the appointment of our new Board of Governors Chair, Mr. Gordon E. Jong. I am very enthusiastic to welcome Gord as the new Board Chair. His breadth of experience in the post-secondary setting, including the six years he previously spent as a U of L board member as well as his role as Board Chair at Lethbridge College, is very important from a governance and management perspective.

As well, given Gord's background as a chartered accountant, his expertise is especially welcome as we navigate the intricacies of the budget process.

I thank outgoing Board Chair Bob Turner for his decade of service to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Throughout his time as a board member and then as Board Chair for the past six years, the U of L experienced some very significant growth and development and we are all very thankful for his contributions to that success.

As I think of successes, I can't help but get excited about the Fall Convocation ceremony. It is at times difficult not to get bogged down in the day-to-day activities of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, dealing with the ebb and flow of budgets and other challenges. But at the end of the day, convocation brings everything back into perspective because it is why we are here.

Each convocation is a harvest for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, where we get to enjoy watching the latest crop of graduates cross the stage and set out on their varied career paths. This fall's ceremony, in the U of L's 45th year, is even more special as we celebrate a Homecoming 2012 and get an opportunity to thank past President Bill Cade as he returns to campus to be recognized with an honorary degree.

What a great way to celebrate the ongoing progress of the U of L.

Mahon earns Kainai Chieftainship

Building on a tradition of understanding, friendship and cooperation, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon was inducted into the Kainai Chieftainship on Saturday, July 21.

Mahon joins a distinguished group of individuals who have been recognized by the members of the Blood Tribe as advocates for the people of the Blood Tribe and for all First Nations' people. There are just 40 living members of the Chieftainship, including former U of L presidents Dr. Howard Tennant (Young Eagle, 1991) and Dr. Bill Cade (Calf Shirt, 2006).

"Being inducted into the Kainai Chieftainship, particularly as one of 40 living members, is a humbling experience," says Mahon, who was welcomed by Chief Charles Weaselhead. "Our university resides on traditional Blackfoot territory and has been given the Blackfoot name Medicine Rock. We have had a longstanding commitment to creating an inclusive university for all First Nations', Metis and Inuit (FNMI) peoples. My own experience this past weekend is a further symbol of this cooperative relationship."

Dr. Mahon has his face painted as part of the ceremony.

Mahon was bestowed the Blackfoot name Iipisowahsi or Morning Star, meaning son of the sun and the moon.

"Blackfoot Elder Dr. Pete Standing Alone gave me my name, saying that the sun is the father and the moon is the mother. Therefore, when they are praying, they often refer to the morning star as their brother," says Mahon. "That is very symbolic and reflects the relationship we want to continue to foster with the Blackfoot people."

Mahon was honoured alongside ATCO president and chief executive officer, Nancy Southern (Brave Woman), and John Jurrius, president and chief executive officer of Native American Resource Partners (Rainy Chief).

Joining the Chieftainship is a very prestigious honour that symbolizes a partnership between cultures and an acceptance into the Blood Tribe. Past inductees into the Kainai Chieftainship include Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Pope John Paul II, former Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, Senator Joyce Fairbairn and former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.

The U of L is the first university in Western Canada to establish a Native American Studies department degree program, and Mahon recently commissioned a report to further examine FNMI initiatives across the campus and to develop recommendations on a future strategy. One of the founders of modern molecular biology, Patrick O'Farrell's discoveries have had dramatic impacts on biological science and have made the use of proteins in medical diagnostics possible. He is a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, San Francisco. Among other projects, he developed 2-D gel electrophoresis, which has become a routine technique for protein separation and analysis.

Jim Coutts is a lawyer, businessman, and former advisor to two Prime Ministers who has made significant contributions to Canada through his public service, conservation efforts and philanthropy, including the development and funding of Lester B. Pearson United World College. At the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Coutts has supported the Art collection and, most recently gifted his family homestead property near Nanton, Alberta.

The 11th Chancellor of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Richard Davidson represented the institution with pride, emphasizing its connections with the community, and has served as president or chairman on many local organizations and charities. Davidson has received many awards and accolades, including Lethbridge Citizen of the Year and a place on the Alberta Venture 50 most Influential People list.

President and chief ambassador of the U of L for ten years, Bill Cade oversaw the development of many initiatives including a rapid increase in students, growth in research, growth of graduate-level education, and the largest fundraising campaign to date. New Mahon on campus

Once a week, a young Mike Mahon (pronounced Man) would catch the bus in his hometown of Winnipeg, Man., ride across the city and head to the swimming pool or gymnasium to work with people with intellectual disabilities.

The volunteer experience was part of a community-service expectation mandated by his high school, but Mahon wasn't there simply to earn credit. Having grown up in a household that valued community engagement, the idea of volunteerism was second nature, and he took to it innately.

"Growing up, that was just what I was exposed to, so the whole idea of volunteering just became a part of who we were as a family," says Mahon. "There was this fundamental belief that volunteering was an important part of living in a community."

Mahon had no idea at that time this early community service opportunity would have such an influence over his future career. It would shape his graduate studies, research and now, as the new president of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, it continues to resonate.

Born in Manitoba, Mahon grew up with four siblings in a house that teemed with activity. A self-described sports junkie, he played a little of everything and eventually was a two-sport (football and track) student-athlete at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Manitoba. After completing a bachelor's degree in physical education, he moved on to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta (MSc in Physical Education) and then the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (PhD in Education) for his graduate and doctoral studies respectively.

"When I started thinking about what I would do with my master's degree, I did look back to that first experience," says Mahon. "It had a tremendous amount of influence from a career perspective."

His research, which focuses on adapted physical activity with an emphasis on older individuals and persons with intellectual disabilities, has garnered a number of honours, including: Fellow of the Academy of Leisure Sciences (2001); Award of Distinction from the Canadian Centre on Disability Studies (2000); the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Manitoba Rh Award for Outstanding Contributions to Interdisciplinary Scholarship and Research (1995).

Mahon has since become a vigorous proponent of physical activity for people of every age and ability. Most recently, he has been working on several projects that bring a research focus to how sports and play can help children in developing countries. In that context he has been involved with Right to Play as well as Play Around the World, groups that supply sports equipment and programming support to children in developing countries.

He says the opportunity to conduct research with these organizations, as well as become involved on a volunteer basis, is particularly rewarding.

"The people I've known who have become volunteers have really, in the end, got more out of the experience themselves than they feel they've given," says Mahon.

His academic career has virtually mirrored the path he took as a student, beginning at Manitoba before transitioning to the U of A where he spent two terms as the dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation prior to his coming to the U of L.

His arrival in Lethbridge appears to be a case of right Mahon, right time. Family, community and developing an atmosphere for growth of the entire person are some of the ideals that Mahon brings to the U of L.

As the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ looks forward, Mahon sees its growth achieved through a learning environment that is dedicated to social responsibility and community engagement; that is dedicated to building a comprehensive university across the broad academy of disciplines; that is dedicated to creating a person-first university environment for staff and faculty; and that is centrally focused on a student-first attitude.

Mahon recognizes he has inherited a confident and forward-thinking institution, and he looks to build off that foundation as he introduces new initiatives. He says, for example, that as much as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and its students are already agents of influence in southern Alberta, there is opportunity to expand the impact the U of L has on society by formalizing its community outreach initiatives.

"Liberal education is about presenting students with an expansive opportunity of academic experience," he says. "I'd like to think that part of that experience could be about being in the community and taking that liberal education concept that much further."

Mahon looks to the example his parents, who were involved community members, provided as he grew up, and the opportunities he had to explore and understand community engagement. As part of his future plan for the U of L, Mahon proposes introducing a framework whereby students earn academic credit for volunteerism.

"I think this is a tremendous gift that we can give our students," he says. "Having volunteer experience within the context of education is, on one level, a way that institutions can connect with and give back to the community, but on another level, it's a wonderful way to help our students expand their horizons."

Kristi Legge's Dance Group Performers, ranging from Grade 6 to university students, were among the highlights at the Presidential Installation.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, having prospered under the leadership of former President Dr. Bill Cade, is emerging from its history as a primarily undergraduate university into a comprehensive institution that fully embraces a research culture, and is rapidly expanding its graduate studies opportunities.

"What I see is the continued integration of teaching and research, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. The U of L has always had a unique approach to engaging undergraduates in research, and that's something we will continue to do," says Mahon. "As we move forward, we must use our experience and commitment to excellence in undergraduate education as a springboard for the development of and improved access to graduate-level programming."

The opportunities for expansion, he says, are numerous, with a track record of success already established.

"We have developed internationally recognized strengths in the areas of neuroscience, epigenetics and water research, and we've more recently moved into the study of demographics and population with the creation of the Prentice Institute," says Mahon. "Now we're searching for our next niche research areas that we can build capacity in, and how they will also integrate with our academic programs, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels."

The recent opening of Markin Hall, a building that houses the Faculties of Health Sciences and Management, provides a fertile ground for collaborative research efforts, and is a perfect example of the interdisciplinary focus at the U of L. Simply by putting talented minds together, it creates a conversation from which great synergies can emerge.

"Markin Hall is going to be very much like the Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building (AWESB)," he says. "When you bring people from different, yet related, disciplines together under the same roof, you start to see some interesting areas of research develop."

Mahon recognizes that the U of L can only move forward with a people-first, student-first approach. It begins by creating an atmosphere where a positive work/life balance is celebrated.

"I want to see us build an institution that is committed to people and to creating that balance for our people, and that means students, staff and faculty. If I'm not a role model on that front, it's hard to preach that this is a direction we should go," says Mahon, who is regularly spotted in the 1st Choice Savings Centre gym, beginning the day with a run on the treadmill or a workout in the weight room.

Having been on campus since July, Mahon has gained an understanding of what makes the U of L engine run – its people. He says the liberal arts ideals that founded the institution, coupled with a student-first learning environment, will continue to be central themes as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ advances.

"Whether it is in academic programs and research, how we recruit and orient our students, our class sizes, our residences, recreation and sport opportunities, health services, or the environment of our campus, we must ensure that we bring to life this concept of student-first," he says.

Part of that is recognizing and celebrating how integral a place the U of L occupies in southern Alberta.

"I've learned that the U of L is a real treasure, and it's because of our people," says Mahon. "We have staff and faculty who are committed to the success of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and to the experiences of our graduate and undergraduate students. Combine that with where we are situated, our beautiful campus, small class sizes and world-class faculty – and this is truly a premier university."

Bill and Elsa Cade receive Generosity of Spirit Award

President Emeritus Dr. Bill Cade and his wife Elsa have a saying: "We've always believed in the 3 Ts," says Bill. "Time, treasure and talent. Everyone can help their community and fellow humans in at least one of those ways."

Both originally from Texas, the former president of the U of L and his wife Elsa certainly have all three areas covered and were recently recognized with a Generosity of Spirit award at a National Philanthropy Day event in Calgary.

The Cades were honoured in the family category of the program, which also recognizes the philanthropy of individuals, companies and organizations. The video below was shown at the event.

As strong supporters of education and youth, the Cades have established the Bill and Elsa Salazar Cade Scholarship in Evolutionary Biology at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, the endowment of which has reached nearly $130,000. They have both contributed to countless student fundraisers and have volunteered their time with many local organizations, including the Lethbridge Youth Foundation, Alberta Science Foundation and the Lethbridge United Way. In recognition of her long-standing service to the community, Elsa was awarded the 2010 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Senate Volunteer award.

When he was president, Bill often found himself on the front lines of fundraising.

"More than once I would say to potential supporters, I wouldn't ask you to do anything I haven't done myself," he says. "To be in the position of asking people, you have to be there yourself. Otherwise it just doesn't work. "

One such donation garnered a lot of attention. In the spring of 2010, they donated their much-loved 1984 BMW, affectionately named Michael Nolan, to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union to be raffled off in support of student scholarships. The unique donation raised more than $30,000 through ticket sales to students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members.

For those looking to start their philanthropic journey, Elsa has some advice: "Get involved in your community and in what interests you," she says. "Giving doesn't have to come out of your wallet. When it's something that's close to you, it's amazing what you can accomplish."

Faculties of Health Sciences and Management reunion

On Sept. 24, more than 250 health sciences and management alumni and friends returned home to celebrate the opening of Markin Hall.

The evening included tours of the new state-of-the-art facility, a "U" photo booth and the chance to catch up with fellow alumni and professors. In addition, both faculties hosted dinners to honour the individuals who helped make Markin Hall possible.

The Faculty of Management celebrated the completion of the Power of 25 initiative, a unique project envisioned by U of L alumni Dan Laplante (BMgt '88), Kevin Nugent (BMgt '88) and Dean Setoguchi (BMgt '89) to recruit 25 alumni to give a minimum of $25,000 each to support Markin Hall.

In the end, the Power of 25 initiative raised more than $2 million, including matching dollars and additional contributions from the participants. More importantly, it united a group of successful leaders who share the same passion, appreciation and pride for the U of L.

Similarly, the Faculty of Health Sciences hosted faculty, staff and friends at the inaugural Friends of Health Sciences Dinner. Former U of L President Dr. Bill Cade and his wife Elsa were honoured with the first Friends of Health Sciences award for their support in growing the Faculty.

A new year for the Edmonton and FNMI chapters

On Oct. 21, the Edmonton Chapter of the Alumni Association had the opportunity to review its first successful year of operation at an Annual General Meeting. The year had focused on further establishing the chapter and in reconnecting with alumni. In addition, the chapter hosted two alumni receptions and a family BBQ. With Jeanette Dotimas (BMgt '01) elected as the new president, the chapter will continue to build on these endeavours.

The First Nations, Métis and Inuit Chapter held its Annual General Meeting on Nov. 2. Chaired by Leroy Little Bear (BASc '72, DASc '04), the chapter will continue to foster a spirit of partnership between the FNMI alumni and students on campus. Participation in activities such as Native Awareness Week and student advisory panels will carry on in the year ahead.

FIAT LUX ring designs

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association invites alumni, students and the general community to submit designs for a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Fiat Lux ring. This ring for alumni will be part of a new tradition in building pride at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Generosity of Spirit Award given to Bill and Elsa Cade

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President Emeritus, Dr. Bill Cade, and his wife Elsa have received a Generosity of Spirit Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Calgary & Area Chapter at a National Philanthropy Day (NPD) event in Calgary.

The Cades were nominated for the Family category of the popular award program, which recognizes and celebrates the philanthropy of individuals, companies, and organizations in the community.

Bill and Elsa are well known in the southern Alberta community to be strong supporters of education and youth.

Among the numerous projects they have been involved with, they established the Bill and Elsa Salazar Cade Scholarship in Evolutionary Biology, an endowment which has reached nearly $130,000.

They have both contributed to countless student fundraisers and volunteered their time with many local organizations, including the Lethbridge Youth Foundation, Alberta Science Foundation and the Lethbridge United Way.

In recognition of her long-standing service to the community, Elsa was awarded the 2010 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Senate Volunteer award and was instrumental in supporting a Haiti earthquake relief effort which raised more than $118,000.

In the spring of 2010, they donated their much-loved 1984 BMW, affectionately named Michael Nolan, to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union to be raffled off in support of student scholarships. The unique donation raised more than $30,000.

From student groups and aboriginal programs to economic development, the Cades have supported numerous local projects and community-based organizations such as the Rotary Club of Lethbridge, to which they have a combined 30 years of service.

They've also served as a resource to various youth and student groups. What is particularly noteworthy is the integral role Elsa has played in the family by putting her career as an award-winning science educator on hold, to support Bill in his role as president.

Mahon to be installed as sixth U of L President

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is readying to install its sixth President, Friday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness.

Dr. Michael J. Mahon will be officially installed as the new President and Vice-Chancellor by the Hon. Catherine Fraser, the Chief Justice of the Province of Alberta.

The ceremony is free and open to the public with doors to the 1st Choice Savings Centre opening at 1 p.m. Many ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ offices will close at 1:45 p.m. to allow staff to attend this historical event. Classes, meanwhile, will continue as scheduled.

An accomplished kinesiology researcher, Dr. Mahon holds a PhD in Education from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MSc in Physical Education from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta and a Bachelor of Physical Education from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Manitoba.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Man., Mahon began his academic career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Manitoba in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation Studies in 1987. During his tenure there he served as Director of the Health, Leisure and Human Performance Research Institute for six years. He joined the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta in 2000 and served two terms as the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation.

His current research is in the field of adapted physical activity with an emphasis on intellectual disability and sport for development.
