Dhillon School of Business receives accreditation for Human Resources Management and Labour Relations program

The Dhillon School of Business has just received Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) accreditation for the Bachelor of Management in Human Resources Management and Labour Relations program. The CPHR designation is the only designation recognized by nine provinces across Canada and is aligned with the United States’ Society for Human Resource Management – the largest HR organization in the world.

The CPHR designation is the only designation recognized by nine provinces across Canada.

Human Resources Management and Labour Relations Area Chair Dr. Kelly Williams-Whitt says their graduates have always been sought by employers because of the quality of education they receive at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Adding a CPHR designation after graduation is another step towards a successful career.

“The CPHR designation is recognized across Canada,” she says. “It assures employers that our students’ knowledge and experience in Human Resources Management and Labour Relations aligns with industry expectations, and that they are committed to the highest standards of professional practice.”

Dhillon students who graduate after September 2018 with a Human Resources Management and Labour Relations major from the U of L can now also apply to waive the CPHR National Knowledge Exam (NKE), a requirement for individual CPHR designations. Students also only require three years of professional human resources experience to receive the full designation, whereas those who do not graduate with a degree from an accredited institution require eight years of experience.

Dean of the Dhillon School of Business, Dr. Robert Boudreau, says the recent CPHR accreditation provides Dhillon graduates with yet another real advantage in a competitive job market.

This most recent accreditation comes on the heels of the school’s accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. AACSB is the largest and most recognized accreditation for business and management schools worldwide.

Founded in 1916, AACSB is the longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools, and the largest business education network connecting students, educators and businesses worldwide. Dhillon School of Business Scholarship Dinner brings in $50,000 for students

The Dhillon School of Business celebrated its annual Scholarship Dinner on April 13, 2018. This year’s event brought together 450 guests to honour Navjeet (Bob) Dhillon and raised $50,000 for student scholarships. The event was supported by Avail CPA as the premier event sponsor.

Both Mr. Dhillon and his wife Aman were honoured with star blankets, created by Anne Healy from the Blackfoot Nation.

The evening included a video debut featuring Dhillon, president and CEO of Mainstreet Equity Corp., whose recent $10-million gift to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ transformed the Faculty of Management into the Dhillon School of Business. Another video highlighted the newly named Dhillon School of Business and the vision that will propel the school forward.

Dean of the Dhillon School of Business, Dr. Robert Boudreau says the evening was an incredible success.

“It was a privilege to honour our benefactor Mr. Dhillon and his family and I was thrilled to see such incredible support for our school and our students from the community,” he says.

Both Dhillon and his wife Aman were honoured with star blankets, created by Anne Healy from the Blackfoot Nation, during the evening. The presentation was followed by the singing of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Honour Song by Billy Wadsworth, also from the Blackfoot Nation.

Now in its 31st year, the Scholarship Dinner has raised more than $1.5 million for student scholarships. This year, the event also raised money through Dhillon School of Business t-shirt sales for the families of students Farah Saegh and Brock Hirsche, who both tragically passed away this year, as well as the late Logan Boulet of the Humboldt Broncos, who was set to begin his studies at the U of L this fall.

In recognition of Bob Dhillon’s generous contribution, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is renaming the Faculty of Management to the Dhillon School of Business.

Navjeet (Bob) Dhillon, President and CEO of Mainstreet Equity Corporation, pledged a $10-million gift to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, the largest donation announcement in the institution’s history. In recognition of Dhillon’s generous contribution, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is renaming the Faculty of Management to the Dhillon School of Business.

Along with a new name, the business school will build on its current curriculum by expanding its focus on finance and business innovation, entrepreneurism and internationalization. For example, the Dhillon School of Business will emphasize futuristic learning through innovative subject areas and new technologies such as blockchain, cryptocurrencies and new growth industries, including artificial intelligence and robotics.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Calgary campus opens Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching at BVC

Faculty of Management students at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Calgary campus at Bow Valley College now have access to the latest in hands-on training technology with the opening of the Calgary Campus Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching (CFMRT).

The Centre is a state-of-the-art facility, complete with a 42-foot, full-colour LED stock ticker, that focuses on the integration of theory and research with practice. Research databases, trading simulation software, and access to global financial resources allow students to link classroom lessons to real-life securities and markets.

“Our programming is geared toward working professionals looking to earn the skills and credentials needed to advance their careers,” says Lynda Thai-Baird, manager of the CFMRT on the U of L’s Lethbridge campus. “Our focus is to meet the needs of our Calgary campus student population by providing these students the same level of accessibility, and creating a seamless learning experience, on both campuses.”

The Centre, created in collaboration with Bow Valley College, is designed to provide a focal point for research and training in a range of financial disciplines, including investment strategy and portfolio management, financial engineering and risk management, trading and analysis of the microstructure of markets.

In 2010, the U of L’s Lethbridge campus opened the first CFMRT and it has proven to be a big draw for students, giving them the opportunity to participate in real-time exercises under actual market conditions. The Faculty of Management introduced the Student-Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) in 2011, providing $100,000 of real money to be invested under the direction of CFMRT advisors but traded by students enrolled in the specific SMIF course.

“The trading room helps the learning experience by taking the theories we have learned in class and showing how these theories are used by financial professionals on a day-to-day basis using the same software they utilize,” says Tanner Johnson, a fifth-year finance and accounting major and president of the Finance Club. “SMIF takes this further by providing the rare opportunity to learn about the challenges of managing real money while still working within a learning environment.”

Faculty of Management Dean Dr. Bob Boudreau says it was important for the U of L to provide this level of technology for its Calgary students, who are mostly employed mature students looking to enhance their financial literacy and further their careers.

“Opening this space in Calgary furthers the U of L’s mandate as an innovator in new curriculum, business initiatives and software development, which all contribute to enhancing the global competitiveness of our students,” says Boudreau. “This is a big day for us as a Faculty and even bigger for both U of L and Bow Valley College students.”

In addition to the real-time stock ticker, CFMRT also features 40 computer terminals with ultra-wide monitors, two high-end web cameras and a custom-designed digital financial data wall consisting of four, 65-inch LCD displays.

“The CFMRT in Lethbridge quickly established itself as a must-see facility for faculty, students, industry leaders and visitors to campus,” says Dr. Mike Mahon, U of L President and Vice-Chancellor. “It is truly leading-edge technology and allows our students to get instant feedback on their theoretical studies as they participate in hands-on, real-time market activities. This experience is invaluable to them once they graduate.”

In addition to the academic activities taking place in CFMRT, the room in Lethbridge has been used as a site for industry nights, high school trading competitions, university finance competitions, investment clubs and tours, all of which are now possible at the U of L’s Calgary campus at Bow Valley College.

Second annual agribusiness case competition draws a dozen teams

Word has spread about the Cor Van Raay Agribusiness Case Competition co-hosted by Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. This year, 54 post-secondary students registered to participate in the two-day event Friday and Saturday.

Now in its second year, the 12 teams taking part include one each from Medicine Hat College, Lakeland College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan. The remaining nine teams are from Lethbridge and are comprised of both U of L students studying management and agricultural economics and Lethbridge College students studying business administration and agriculture.

“This case competition provides students with an opportunity to analyze issues facing the primary industry in southern Alberta and provide solutions to a panel of judges,” says Dr. Bob Boudreau, dean of the Faculty of Management at the U of L. “It also allows them to network with and learn from industry professionals.”

“This competition is a great experience for students to work with peers from not only different disciplines, but from different institutions as well, in a fast-paced learning environment,” says Dennis Sheppard, dean of the Centre for Applied Management at Lethbridge College. “The competition affords students a taste of their future careers in an ever-growing world where the business of agriculture is critical.”

The case competition grew out of a $5-million donation by local agricultural entrepreneur Dr. Cor Van Raay (LLD ’15). The competition is designed to give students the opportunity to expand their knowledge in agriculture and business on a global scale.

“We strive to educate students on agribusiness and its potential career paths. Agribusiness presents diverse career possibilities, regardless of whether someone has grown up on a farm or not,” says Boudreau.

The competition gets underway Friday evening with a networking event and talk by keynote speaker Dennis McKnight. McKnight, founder of The Innovators, has decades of experience in market research and analyzing data. On Saturday morning, the case competition gets underway in the Markin Hall Atrium at the U of L. Students will be given an agribusiness case from which they’ll analyze the relevant issues and come up with a strategy that they’ll present to a panel of three judges. The competition wraps up with a mixer, dinner and awards presentation at the Garden Court restaurant at Lethbridge College.

A first-of-its-kind partnership between the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Lethbridge School District No. 51 promises to create new learner pathways for high school students and better prepare them for the transition to post-secondary studies.

The Dual Credit program will see high school students have supervised access to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus, facilities, instruction and other resources.

The creation of a Dual Credit program will allow students to take university courses as part of their usual high school schedule, earning credits at both the high school and post-secondary level. The program began as a three-year pilot project in September 2014, with planning taking place in the first year, and will initially involve students from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI).

“We feel that the relationship the students build with the course content, rigorous classroom environment, university instructors and the university itself will strengthen the likelihood that our students will see university as a potential learning pathway after high school,” says Dr. Cheryl Gilmore, Superintendent, Lethbridge School District No. 51. “We hope that through this program our students examine their future career planning and post-secondary possibilities, including the many programs at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.”

Two courses will be offered at the outset of the program, Supply Chain Management 1850 and Liberal Education 1000. Students will meet with a university faculty member two times per week at LCI, and have an additional four hours per week of study time dedicated specifically to their class. Students will also have supervised access to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus, facilities, instruction and other resources.

“This partnership is an excellent opportunity to engage local high school students with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and our outstanding faculty,” says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) Dr. Bob Boudreau. “One of the fundamental philosophies of the U of L has always been to provide access to a quality post-secondary education and this is another way of creating these pathways for students. The program also creates a comfort level for students with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the demands of a post-secondary environment, which can only lead to greater success in the future. Both of the courses offered will provide students with basic skills and knowledge to help them succeed in any extended learning or career choice.”

Funding for the Dual Credit program is from a variety of sources, including the Alberta Government Dual Credit Tri-ministry Council, consisting of Alberta Education, Alberta Innovation and Advanced Education and Alberta Human Services. The U of L and Lethbridge School District No. 51 are supplying funds, while industry partners Haul-All and West Jet are also on board with their support for the program, as it furthers the process of preparing students for their eventual entry into the workforce.

“We are pleased to be partners in this exciting initiative,” says Kevin Neufeldt, chief operating officer of Haul-All Equipment. “Through this innovative approach to educating high school students, industry partners are able to support students in understanding the need for extended learning in order to succeed in future careers. We can directly provide students exposure to our industry, outline the skills and education we are looking for in future employees and present them with career opportunities.”

Haul-All and West Jet will host field trips and provide in-class guest speakers to further highlight to students industry overviews, needs and opportunities.

A total of 40 students are expected to take part in the pilot program in the first year of instruction.

Nicol appointed ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Librarian

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has named Dr. Christopher J. Nicol as its new ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Librarian, an appointment that took effect on July 1, 2013.

Nicol, the former Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science, had been serving as Acting ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Librarian since Sept. 1, 2012. He took that position in the wake of former ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Librarian Alison Nussbaumer's move to the role of Interim Dean, Internationalization.

"Chris Nicol's service to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge as Dean of Arts and Science has been both remarkable and exemplary," says Bob Boudreau, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Vice Provost. "His contributions in advancing the Faculty of Arts and Science will be felt for years to come. Building on this legacy, we are absolutely thrilled that Chris will continue to serve and lead the U of L in his new role of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Librarian."

A native of Scotland, Nicol earned his master's and PhD in economics at Queen's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Kingston, Ont., before spending 16 years as a professor of economics at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Regina. He arrived on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus in 2001 and assumed his duties as a professor in economics while also serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. He will continue on as a professor of economics in the Department of Economics while serving as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Librarian.

An esteemed researcher, Nicol's interests are in econometrics, applied econometrics and the theory of consumer behaviour. He is also keenly interested in macroeconomic policy debates, especially those arising in the wake of the financial crisis of 2008.

Nicol is also an accomplished swimmer, having competed internationally and at the post-secondary level for Queen's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. In 1985, Nicol won both the 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke events at the inaugural World Masters Games in Toronto.

Mental health support receives $3 million boost

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students will soon see expanded mental health services because of a significant Government of Alberta investment.

On January 16, Alberta Health Minister Fred Horne and Enterprise and Advanced Education Minister Stephen Khan announced the U of L would receive $3 million over three years as part of the first stage of implementing Alberta's Addiction and Mental Health Strategy. Similar investments were made at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta with the Alberta Student Executive Council (ASEC) receiving $1.5 million over the same period.

"The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge puts tremendous emphasis on the student experience," says U of L president Mike Mahon. "This includes ensuring timely and comprehensive mental health supports are available for our students. This investment greatly benefits the U of L students at our three campuses in Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge by helping those with an immediate problems and by mitigating future issues using preventative measures."

The U of L will use these funds to expand mental health, addiction and counseling services at its Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge campuses through the hiring of health professionals, holding work shops and training sessions and conducting surveys to ensure the institution continues to understand the types of supports that students require.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Associate Vice-President (Academic) Bob Boudreau says the Government of Alberta investment is targeting an important demographic.

"Providing mental health supports for a student in need is not only beneficial in the short-term but has a lasting effect," says Boudreau. "Often these supports benefit students over a lifetime. Further, students who deal with issues they face in a timely fashion are more like succeed over the term of their post-secondary studies."

Funding will be used, among other things, to:
• Hire medical professionals, including a two day per week salaried Physician with training in mental health that can act as an expert in the collaboration and liaison needed between on-campus services.

• Expand counselling services at the three U of L campuses.

• Run workshops and training, for example, on suicide prevention. Continuing education of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge team will ensure that best practices are rapidly incorporated into delivery and support programs.

• Support participation in and data analysis of the NCHA and Healthy Minds surveys.
