Enrolment up significantly at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge

This fall, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge welcomed one of the largest groups of students in its history. The number of students registered at the U of L totals 8,453, which represents an increase of 2.8 per cent from last fall. Dr. Mike Mahon, U of L president, announced the figure during his annual Fiat Lux address on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The number of new high school registrants increased by more than 18 per cent from last year. To help ensure students make a successful transition from high school to university, Mahon stressed the need for the U of L community to continue offering their support.

The U of L welcomed more First Nations, Métis and Inuit students this year, with enrolment up 8.1 per cent from last year.

The U of L also saw significant growth in the number of new students starting their classes at the Calgary campus. Enrolment increased by 2.6 per cent to a total of 795 students. Primarily for adult learners who are working full-time, classes are offered in the evenings and on weekends. Through Campus Alberta, students can take advantage of laddering opportunities with Bow Valley College, Olds College and Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. In addition to the Bachelor of Management currently offered, the Faculty of Fine Arts has hired a full-time instructor and now offers a minor in New Media in Calgary.

“The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge remains an institution of choice for students across Alberta and beyond because of our high-quality academic programs and a focus on supporting our students,” says Mahon.

International student fulfils goal at U of L's Calgary campus

As May came to an end, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge celebrated the achievements of 1,402 students who graduated at the Spring 2015 Convocation and set out to begin the next chapter of their lives.

International student Maaike van Gogh (BMgt ’15) was one of those students. Although Calgary – and the U of L's Calgary campus – has been her home recently, the journey to her management degree began almost 10 years ago in her hometown of Utrecht, Netherlands.

The ability to complete her degree while working was the perfect fit for Maaike van Gogh.

It was there, at her local university, where she discovered the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Wanting to participate in a student exchange program, her options varied, but thanks to a recommendation from a friend who had previously attended the U of L through an exchange, van Gogh was on her way to southern Alberta.

Coming to the Lethbridge campus for the spring 2008 semester, van Gogh discovered a campus environment that was friendly and inviting.

“I felt very welcome when I arrived at the Lethbridge campus in ’08 – the international office had someone pick me up at the bus depot and take me to go get some groceries," she says. "The U of L really understood that when you’re new to a country it’s those basic things, like knowing where the grocery store is, that are your most pressing needs. Everything else can be figured out once you’re fed!”

When she completed her exchange program she headed back to Holland, but in 2009 van Gogh took a few years off from school to work and discover more of Canada. In 2012 she decided it was time to get back to school and finish her degree.

van Gogh was now living and working in Calgary, so when searching for a school to attend, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Calgary campus was the right fit for her. She was already familiar with the U of L and liked that the Calgary campus offered night classes.

“The Calgary campus is a professional and convenient campus. The night classes allowed me to put in my eight hours a day without having to miss a class,” she says.

What van Gogh enjoyed most about her Calgary experience was the co-op program. She successfully completed co-op terms with two companies (TransCanada Pipelines and Nexen), which provided her with varied experiences within the human resources field.

“The co-op program allowed me to not only get real work experience, but helped me pay for university without having to take out a personal loan,” she says. “I was able to finish my degree completely debt free. That’s a huge accomplishment!”

Currently, van Gogh works for Nexen as a human resources benefits analyst, a career she was able to obtain thanks to the co-op program. Realizing the success she’s had due to the co-op program, a goal she has for the future is wanting to stay connected with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the Calgary campus by helping out future co-op students.

“When I first started the co-op program I was finding it hard get to a job in the competitive Calgary market, so I volunteered with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, which then allowed me to finally get a job. I want to help other students in the co-op program who are having a difficult time finding a job by showing them what I did through volunteering and how it helped me,” says van Gogh.

When returning to school, van Gogh's goal was clear - to finish her degree. Now that she has, how does she feel?

“To be honest, completing my degree and graduating this spring is a huge relief for myself. It’s been a long time coming and I’m relieved it is finally here!”

U of L Calgary Campus Summer Session I now complete

In consideration of the recent and severe flooding of downtown Calgary, and because the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Calgary Campus remains inaccessible, Summer Session I courses at the Calgary Campus are now complete.

Instructors will evaluate completed course work and will subsequently assign a final course grade. Final exams for Summer Session I have been cancelled.

Students who would like the opportunity to retake the course will be able to do so at no cost to them. Those wishing to withdraw from the course will be able to, without the withdrawal appearing on their official transcript. Final grade submission for Summer Session I will remain July 3, 2013.

We are currently working with other Calgary post-secondary institutions in an effort to offer courses during the Summer Session II and III semesters. Further information regarding these arrangements will be posted shortly.

The U of L's Calgary Campus remains closed until further notice. U of L officials will continue to monitor the situation and will advise on the reopening of the Calgary Campus when details become clear. In the interim, students, staff and faculty are asked not to access the U of L's Calgary Campus at Bow Valley College.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ reappoints Boudreau

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has reappointed Dr. Robert Boudreau to a second five-year term as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Vice-Provost & Associate Vice-President (Academic). The Board of Governors, as well as the review committee struck to make a recommendation to the Board, unanimously supported Boudreau's reappointment.

"Dr. Boudreau has been instrumental in ensuring the success of several initiatives over the past five years," says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Provost Dr. Andrew Hakin. "For example, Bob was instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition for our academic programmes as we relocated our Calgary Campus to the Bow Valley College site and our Edmonton Campus to Concordia ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ College of Alberta.

In addition to overseeing the transition of the northern campuses, Boudreau also plays a leadership role at the U of L by leading in key strategic areas including academic quality assurance and Campus Alberta partnerships. As well, he successfully advocated to the Alberta government the need to invest in mental health supports for students on campus.

Over the last 30 years, Boudreau has held a variety of academic positions including Professor, Assistant Dean, Director, Honorary Visiting Research Fellow, Acting Dean of Graduate Studies, Assistant Vice-President (Academic), and Vice Provost & Associate Vice-President (Academic).

Specializing his research in occupational burnout, his current resume lists 137 presentations, articles, books, book chapters and interviews that he has produced over the last three decades plus. He has personally collected burnout survey data from workers in Belarus, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

U of L celebrates its Calgary presence at Bow Valley College

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is celebrating the new location of its Calgary Campus with its post-secondary, community, alumni and government partners, as Bow Valley College officially opens its South Campus today.

In addition to the introduction of a beautiful building that will be utilized by four of Alberta's post-secondary institutions, a new partnership between Bow Valley College, Olds College, Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is being celebrated in front of dignitaries that include Premier Alison Redford, Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

Since 1996, the U of L has served a critical role in Calgary by offering university degree level programming through its Faculty of Management in the evenings and on weekends.

"By meeting the needs of busy, working adult learners, U of L students can earn a degree in a manner that accommodates their busy lifestyles," says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President, Dr. Mike Mahon. "This niche, combined with our Campus Alberta partnership with Bow Valley College, Olds College and Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will create new, important laddering opportunities for Alberta's students."

The U of L's original Calgary Campus was located at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Significant student growth occurred from 1997 to 2001, primarily due to the post-diploma program offered in Calgary. Today, the U of L's Calgary Campus is home to approximately 700 students in Calgary.

"The success of the programming we offer in Calgary can be attributed to the quality of a U of L degree, but also to the efforts the U of L has made in making a university degree accessible to adult learners," says Dean of the Faculty of Management, Dr. Bob Ellis.

When combined with the many students from Calgary who choose to attend the U of L's Lethbridge campus, Calgary and its surrounding areas become the U of L's most significant source of students. Calgary students make up 38 per cent of the U of L's total student body.

Since its inception, more than 1,460 students have graduated from the Calgary Campus. Overall, Calgary and area is home to more than 7,000 U of L alumni.

"The U of L is very proud of the role it plays in creating access for Alberta students, whether they attend our Lethbridge, Calgary or Edmonton campuses. Further, we are extremely proud of the role our alumni are playing in building communities across Alberta, Canada and internationally," says Mahon.

U of L's Calgary Campus in new administrative space

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Calgary Campus, has finished moving into new administrative space.

Now serving students from the 6th floor of Bow Valley College's South Campus, the U of L team enjoys high quality professional space with room to grow.

"Relocating allows us to serve students more effectively," says Dana Corbin, Calgary Campus manager. "By being closer to classrooms, we have the ability to offer convenience to our students and more support to our instructional staff."

The new offices now share a building with classrooms, printing services, a cafeteria, Tim Horton's and the BVC bookstore. Connected by more than 15 walkways to more classrooms and the downtown core, the new facilities offer a unique campus environment and enhance the student experience.

This move has been in the planning stages since the Calgary Campus moved to the downtown core in 2011. As a member of the Campus Alberta South Partnership, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will work closely with Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Olds College and Bow Valley College in the new facility.

Williams earns interim appointment

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors has confirmed the appointment of Lorne Williams as the Interim Assistant Dean of Northern Campuses, effective May 1.

Reporting to the Vice-President Academic and Provost, and working closely with the faculties and the School of Graduate Studies on campus, Williams will provide a voice at Dean's Council and a perspective on the U of L's presence in Calgary and Edmonton.

Currently, more than 1,000 students are enrolled in the two locations, which have been in operation since 1996. Courses are taught primarily in the evenings and on weekends and geared to working professionals.

"We are pleased to have Lorne move into this new position, given his long-term service to the U of L, and his excellent work as a past director and current faculty member of our Calgary campus," says Dr. Andy Hakin, the U of L's Vice-President, Academic and Provost. "The U of L is committed to serving students in Calgary and Edmonton, and this new position will provide more resources for those campuses as we move to take advantage of future opportunities."

Williams moves to this new position with more than 20 years of U of L experience, including more than a decade of work in the Calgary market as a director, instructor and co-ordinator at the U of L Calgary campus. During his time there, he won six teaching awards.

As well, Williams has served on the Faculty Association executive, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Senate, the executive of the Alumni Association, and was recently inducted into the U of L Alumni Honour Society.

Williams spent nearly 15 years in managerial positions in the housing and hospitality business units at the U of L and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary, while furthering his education with four degrees: A Bachelor of Arts, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary; a Bachelor of Management, U of L; a Master of Arts, Leadership and Training, Royal Roads ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ; and a Master of Education, U of L.

He also consults widely on team building, leadership and corporate culture for public, private and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes. Personally, he invests volunteer time with the Calgary Board of Education, Kamp Kiwanis and Scouts Canada.

Before arriving at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Williams helped administer the Olympic Village during the 1988 Winter Olympic games and worked in the political arena for several years, serving two Prime Ministers and a provincial Premier in Calgary and Ottawa.

"I'm excited to work with the Directors, staff and faculty members in Calgary and Edmonton as we move ahead," says Williams. "We have a number of opportunities to take advantage of as we reinforce our presence in Calgary and Edmonton, and I am looking forward to bringing more of the U of L further north."

More than 700 students at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Calgary Campus have started their January term in Bow Valley College's (BVC) newly renovated downtown North Campus.

This move builds on the efforts of both institutions to collaborate and provide better access to post-secondary education in Calgary.

"By increasing access to quality education in downtown Calgary, the U of L and BVC are working together to meet the needs of Calgarians," says U of L President Mike Mahon. "By providing options for individuals interested in pursuing post-secondary education, our two institutions help ensure that more students will have the knowledge and skills to be successful."

The U of L has been offering Faculty of Management programming in Calgary since 1996, and for the past 15 years has steadily increased its enrolment and course offerings. There has also been a continual progression of transfer agreements, which allow even more Albertans to take advantage of convenient evening and weekend course offerings.

"We're delighted to welcome the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge into our newly refurbished campus," says Sharon Carry, president and CEO, Bow Valley College. "This partnership is a significant step in the creation of Campus Alberta South — a set of principles developed by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Technology to provide a seamless and unified system of lifelong learning for Albertans."

Program growth, both at the U of L's previous location at SAIT, and at the U of L, spurred the move to larger facilities at BVC.

"To best serve our growing number of students – from BVC, SAIT and elsewhere in Calgary – the U of L decided that moving was a viable option," says Lorne Williams, director of the U of L's Calgary campus. "In turn, this allows SAIT to expand its on-campus space to serve its students. We've had an excellent relationship with our Calgary students over the past 15 years, and it will continue, but in a different location. We already feel very much a part of the BVC family, and look forward to growing our new partnership."

Members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Calgary Campus recently capped off a very positive 15-year relationship with SAIT Polytechnic by establishing a new transfer scholarship.

The scholarship program is for graduates from SAIT who choose the U of L, and will be made available to transfer students registering at the U of L in the Fall 2011 semester.

The U of L is relocating its offices to a downtown Calgary location in partnership with Bow Valley College beginning in January 2011. Program growth spurred the move, both at SAIT and the
U of L.

"To best serve our growing number of students – from SAIT and elsewhere in Calgary – the
U of L decided that moving was a viable option," says Lorne Williams, director of the U of L's Calgary campus.

"In turn, this allows SAIT to expand its on-campus space to serve its students. We've had an excellent relationship over the past 15 years, and it will continue, but in a different location."

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Calgary Campus was established in 1996 to meet the changing needs of a working student population who wanted classes during evenings and weekends. What started as a small satellite campus for the Faculty of Management, now offers courses across several disciplines. Close to 700 students were registered in classes this semester.

The Calgary campus office is moving to Rocky Mountain Plaza (Suite 1100, Rocky Mountain Plaza, 615 Macleod Trail SE, T2G 4T8), effective Dec. 20. Starting in January, all classes will be held at Bow Valley College.
