"Families are funny and this script exposes that humour in very clever ways."</p><p>With a grand set, designed by Jim Wills, and period costumes designed by Leslie Robison-Greene, the production transports audiences to a medieval era of stone, wood, leather and furs.</p><p>"The production is very well crafted, and it's been a pleasure to be a part of this collaborative project," says Adams, who won Saskatoon's Best Director Award in 2012.</p><p>A bit of a nomad, he has served as the artistic director of Nakai Theatre in the Yukon and Mulgrave Road Theatre in Nova Scotia, and also directed productions across the country.</p><p>Tickets for The Lion in Winter are available at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Box Office (403-329-2616), Monday through Friday 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Individual tickets are $15 regular, $10 seniors/students. schema:articleBody"> <p>Growing up in Whitehorse, Marilyn Smith, executive director for the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (<a href="http://www.saag.ca/" rel="nofollow">SAAG</a>), was surrounded by some of the most beautiful artwork that nature could provide – but it was the artwork created by humanity that truly captured her heart.</p><p>"The arts have always interested me. The Yukon is an adventurous, creative place and I'm attracted to that same spirit in the arts; a place where people aren't afraid to push boundaries," says Smith, winner of the 2011 Rozsa Award for Excellence in Arts Management.</p><p>Drawn by its size and reputation for Native American and education programs, Smith became a student at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge in the mid-1970s.</p><p>"I originally thought about going into art education. I started taking art classes and art history. I realized that was the area I was most interested in, and that I didn't want to teach in a formal school system. Simultaneously, I got a job working at SAAG as part of the gallery's first extension program led by Victoria Baster (now an instructor in the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/finearts" rel="nofollow">Faculty of Fine Arts</a>). It was this experience that shifted my concentration to the administrative side of the arts," says Smith.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/smith-saag.jpg" alt="Marilyn Smith" title="SAAG executive director Marilyn Smith, middle, is flanked by fellow U of L alumni and SAAG employees Tyler Stewart (far left), David Farstad, Jenn Prosser, Christina Cuthbertson and Ryan Doherty."><div class="image-caption">SAAG executive director Marilyn Smith, middle, is flanked by fellow U of L alumni and SAAG employees Tyler Stewart (far left), David Farstad, Jenn Prosser, Christina Cuthbertson and Ryan Doherty.</div></div></p><p>After her third year at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, Smith went home for the summer where she stayed until 1995 as co-owner and producer of a musical theatre company: Frantic Follies Vaudeville Revue. Ready for a change, she returned to Lethbridge to complete the final year of her multi-disciplinary bachelor's degree in Fine Arts.</p><p>"In my first go-round, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ was so small; it was almost like a large high school. Art classes were in the dark, dank basement of the physical education building. When I returned in 1995, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ was much bigger, more sophisticated. There was a wider range of opportunities and a state of the art Fine Arts building. It was quite a big change," says Smith, who is quick to point out that the constant over the years was the quality of the professors and the educational experience.</p><p>"The professors are top-notch. My drama professor, David Spinks, was inspirational to me in my first experience at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. He created opportunities to go into local and First Nations communities to perform that really expanded my understanding of this area and the different people who live here. Jeffrey Spalding, the director of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s Art Gallery, was amazing. He made the collection accessible on so many levels; he had such an inspiring, boundless vision," remembers Smith. "The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ introduced me to contemporary art through their exhibitions, speaker series, visiting lectures and art history classes. I have brought that knowledge with me in my career."</p><p>In 1996, Smith graduated with distinction and began her career at the SAAG as an education co-ordinator and curator until 1999 when she was promoted to her current position. During her tenure, gallery proceeds have increased 200 per cent.</p><p>Recently, Smith oversaw renovations at the SAAG that included an addition of 6,000 square feet of space with a library and new instructional area. Since re-opening in 2010, the gallery has tripled its membership, while programming and sponsorship has increased.</p><p>"The focus of SAAG, from the founding board until now, has always been that the gallery would bring the kind of quality programming to Lethbridge that is available in larger centres. It is my privilege to work with amazing colleagues, board and community members. It has been a group effort that brought us to the point where we have an excellent reputation locally, nationally and internationally," says Smith. "I am honoured to have been a part of that."</p><p>Smith also believes that the gallery's success is greatly supported by the close connection it has with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.</p><p>"The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and the SAAG have had a symbiotic relationship over the years. We exhibit artists who teach at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬; many of our artists speak at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s lecture series and we are actively involved in student internships from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬," says Smith. "Currently all our staff are Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ graduates; there is a shared understanding and experience because of that. The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ has made a huge difference in our quality of life and the fact that we have such a tremendously well-educated group of people to draw upon to fill the expertise needed to run the gallery has significantly influenced the growth of our institution."</p><p><strong><em>This story first appeared in the November issue of the Legend. href="http://upnorthmovie.com" rel="nofollow">Up North</a>, a film that tells an alternate history of Canada's north, screens at 7 p.m. at the Lethbridge Public Library.</p> <p>In the summer of 2007, Drew McIntosh, Robert Lutener and Aaron Bocanegra set out on a journey across the north into the Arctic Circle; in exploration of the impact change has had on the landscape and people's lives. Their 8,500 km adventure begins in Edmonton, four hours south of the largest proposed industrial project in history, the Athabasca Oilsands. Travelling through Alberta, British Columbia, Alaska, The Yukon, and the Northwest Territories they arrived in Inuvik, at the end of the 750 km gravel Dempster Highway, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle.</p> <p>Through conversations with First Nations Chiefs, Elders, comedians, artists, dancers and mountaineers, Up North takes you on a journey of discovery and inquiry delving into a multilayered look at forms of change including economic, environmental, cultural, social, political, dromological and linguistic. Set against the stunning beauty of North America's last wilderness, it accesses an alternate history of Canada's North, told through the wisdom of experience and the reflection of our culture in the landscape.</p> <p>The screening is free and open to everyone.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body single ward.<br> <br> For fourth-year students completing their preceptorship &ndash; in which they work side-by-side with a registered nurse &ndash; working in a rural hospital offers a steep learning curve, as well as a unique opportunity to be part of a tightly knit health-care team. Rural hospitals often lack specialized medical resources, requiring all health-care practitioners to band together to offer patients the best care possible, explains Dr. Monique Sedgwick, who began her tenure as an assistant professor in the School of Health Sciences in July 2008.<div class="image-caption-container" style="width:350px;"><img title="Dr. Monique Sedgwick believes that nursing is as much about joining that community of nurses as it is about learning technical skills." src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/rural-nursing.jpg" alt=""><div class="image-caption">Dr. Monique Sedgwick believes that nursing is as much about joining that community of nurses as it is about learning technical skills.</div></div><br> <br> Surprised at the lack of nursing research on the experience of students in the rural hospital setting, Sedgwick decided to fill in the gap with her own dissertation research. Participants in her study were located over a 640,000 sq. km area throughout central and northern Alberta, northern British Columbia and the Yukon.<br> <br> Students' feeling of belonging has emerged as a cultural theme from the data she's already collected and appears to be a key ingredient to their success in the preceptorship. This doesn't surprise Sedgwick, as it's important for all nurses.<br> <br> "Becoming a professional, registered nurse is as much about joining that community of registered nurses as it is about learning the technical skills of what nurses do," she says. "Sometimes, I think we assume that nurses only do the technical things, and if you're good at that, you're a good nurse. But, I think my research points to the fact that it's more than that."<br> <br> In any nursing situation &ndash; whether in a hospital or other health-care facility &ndash; nurses seldom work autonomously. Treating patients requires communicating with a wide range of other health-care professionals.<br> <br> "I think it becomes very important for nurses to connect with each other and with all members of the team &ndash; from the physicians, physiotherapists, social workers, emergency-care providers like paramedics, administrative support workers, housekeeping, and dietary and records keeping personnel," she says. "It's a very stressful job, and we need to be able to confer with each other, and consult with each other so the best patient care is provided."<br> <br> Ultimately, Sedgwick hopes her work will benefit students, and she's excited about two upcoming projects.<br> <br> "My goal is to explore the student experience so that as educators, we can bring forward that information to help students better prepare for that clinical setting."</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-naturalfeature-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">NaturalFeature:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/natural-feature/yukon" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Yukon</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/school-health-sciences" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">School of Health Sciences</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/monique-sedgwick" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Monique Sedgwick</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/assistant-professor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">assistant professor</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/registered-nurse" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Registered Nurse</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/good-nurse" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">good nurse</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Alberta</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/british-columbia" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">British Columbia</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Sense of belonging key to rural nursing" class="rdf-meta"></span> Tue, 07 Apr 2009 21:17:52 +0000 trevor.kenney 5231 at /unews Brandt among Honorary Degree recipients /unews/article/brandt-among-honorary-degree-recipients <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-b2e02c0f0c9416dcf8dc0df5eacd8f71"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">March 11, 2009</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>Country music artist Paul Brandt is coming to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge &ndash; but he'll have to share the stage.<br> <br> Brandt is one of eight persons selected by the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Senate as an Honorary Degree recipient for 2009.
