He received a BA and LLB from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta and an MBA from Harvard Business School.</p><p>Though he practised as a lawyer and business consultant, his great love since the age of 14 was politics in general and the Liberal Party of Canada in particular. From 1963 to 1966 he was Appointment Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson. From 1975 to 1981 he served as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau.</p><p>From 1970 to 1975, Jim was a Founding Partner, Canada Consulting Group, where he helped Maurice Strong organize the Stockholm Environment Conference and establish the UN&rsquo;s Environment headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. In 1982 he became a principal of Lowther Consultants Limited and subsequently Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, CIC Canadian Investment Capital Limited.</p><p>Jim&rsquo;s business success seemed merely a means by which he could undertake his highly activist philanthropy as a generous donor, a relentless fundraiser and a dedicated mentor to countless young people and more than 17 god children. Jim served with exceptional distinction as a founder and chairman of the Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific Foundation Board; a co-founder with The Writers&rsquo; Trust of Canada of the W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize for Writers and Mentors; a director of The Hospital for Sick Children Board and Foundation for 17 years; a National Chair of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, where he took the lead in organizing two campaigns that raised over $700 million for conservation in Canada; and a member of the board of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.</p><p>In recognition of his service to others and to his country, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2001. In 2012 he donated his family homestead, which he so passionately restored to renowned gardens with native grasses, to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. In addition, Jim donated more than 300 works of art to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge. Later he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.</p><p>Jim was a man of many interests. He was a voracious reader and art collector, an avid bird-watcher and gardener, a keen traveler and essayist, a family historian and social analyst. Though he failed in his attempts to become a Member of Parliament, his wise counsel was constantly sought by prime ministers, federal and provincial MPs and party officials to his very last days. He was an unfailing advocate for social justice, education and youth employment. Jim was a true and giving friend to many, from all walks of life, who will miss his stories, his wit, his knowledge, his guidance and his loyalty.</p><p>Celebrations of Jim&rsquo;s life &ndash; both in Toronto and in Nanton, Alberta, will be announced at a later date.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-name-field-op-related-nref field-type-node-reference field-label-above block-title-body"> <h2><span>Related Content</span></h2> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even"><article about="/unews/article/gift-launches-coutts-centre-western-canadian-heritage" typeof="rNews:Article schema:NewsArticle" class="node node-openpublish-article node-published node-not-promoted node-not-sticky author-trevorkenney odd clearfix" id="node-openpublish-article-3394"> <div class="content clearfix"> <div class="field field-name-field-op-main-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:associatedMedia schema:associatedMedia" resource="/unews/sites/default/files/styles/right-sidebar-thumbnails/public/main/articles/JimCoutts3.jpg"><a href="/unews/article/gift-launches-coutts-centre-western-canadian-heritage"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="/unews/sites/default/files/styles/right-sidebar-thumbnails/public/main/articles/JimCoutts3.jpg" width="116" height="80" alt="" /></a></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Gift launches Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage" class="rdf-meta"></span> <h3 property="rnews:name schema:name" datatype="" class="node-title"><a href="/unews/article/gift-launches-coutts-centre-western-canadian-heritage" title="Gift launches Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage">Gift launches Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage</a></h3> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field-item odd"><article about="/unews/photo-gallery/coutts-centre-western-canadian-heritage" typeof="sioc:Item foaf:Document" class="node node-openpublish-photo-gallery node-published node-not-promoted node-not-sticky author-admin even clearfix" id="node-openpublish-photo-gallery-5591"> <div class="content clearfix"> <div class="field field-name-field-op-main-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/photo-gallery/coutts-centre-western-canadian-heritage"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="/unews/sites/default/files/styles/right-sidebar-thumbnails/public/galleries/5881414084_29a07e7340_o.jpg" width="116" height="80" alt="" /></a></div></div></div><span property="dc:title" content="Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage" class="rdf-meta"></span> <h3 property="dc:title" datatype="" class="node-title"><a href="/unews/photo-gallery/coutts-centre-western-canadian-heritage" title="Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage">Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage</a></h3> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field-item even"><article about="/unews/article/jim-coutts-explores-home-pain-and-his-artistic-mission-0" typeof="rNews:Article schema:NewsArticle" class="node node-openpublish-article node-published node-not-promoted node-not-sticky author-trevorkenney odd clearfix" id="node-openpublish-article-3992"> <div class="content clearfix"> <div class="field field-name-field-op-main-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:associatedMedia schema:associatedMedia" resource="/unews/sites/default/files/styles/right-sidebar-thumbnails/public/main/articles/coutts-banner_2.jpg"><a href="/unews/article/jim-coutts-explores-home-pain-and-his-artistic-mission-0"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="/unews/sites/default/files/styles/right-sidebar-thumbnails/public/main/articles/coutts-banner_2.jpg" width="116" height="80" alt="" /></a></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Jim Coutts explores &quot;home pain&quot; "I wish I had spoken more with my grandfather about it, but he was a very private man who didn't generally discuss the topic, and he passed away when I was a young teenager."<br> <br> Moore's paternal grandfather, Leading Seaman (LSEM1) John Moore, was a veteran of the Korean War and served on the HMCS Crusader battle ship (known as the Train Wrecker for its ability to successfully disable land-based supply trains) from November 16, 1951 until June 5, 1953.<br> <br> Thankfully, a person who felt more at home on water than land, Moore's grandfather held the position of a "Stocker" in the engine room of the Crusader. He left military service after his Korean War experience, working in several B.C. packing houses and subsequently for Agriculture Canada until he retired. The elder Moore passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of military tradition with his six children, and in the hearts of his numerous grandchildren.<br> <br> Hosted and supported by the South Korean government's Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Moore will see locations of some of the key points in the conflict, which lasted from 1950 to 1953, including the now famous Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and a memorial to fallen soldiers at Busan.<br> <br> More than 26,000 Canadians volunteered to serve in the Korean War, and more than 500 perished. Canada's presence continues today through the United Nations peacekeeping process.<br> <br> Moore is no stranger to military life &ndash; in addition to her grandfather, she has aunts, uncles and cousins who have served in various military capacities from World War II to Afghanistan &ndash; and, in fact, wishes to pursue a career of her own in the military following graduation.<br> <br> "As a former member of the 11 Lethbridge Royal Canadian Air Cadets (from 2004 to 2011), I was able to travel, develop leadership skills and gain numerous other experiences. This has led me to the decision to join formally after university, and right now I am leaning toward a career in the medical services," she says.<br> <br> Moore adds that anything that increases her knowledge of military history and other activities will only help her in the future.<br> <br> "I am especially grateful to local Korean veteran Don Dahlke and members of the General Stewart Legion for their help and input as I was preparing for the trip. A lot of people still don't understand that the war between North Korea and South Korea is technically still going on, and that Canada plays a huge role in the peacekeeping process to this day. Lethbridge will host a special session of the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs Thursday night, 7 p.m. in PE264.<br> <br> Should a Moratorium and a Full Scale Environmental Assessment Precede Any Further Development Using Hydraulic Fracturing? That is the question that guest speaker Jessica Ernst will debate.<br> <br> Ernst is an environmental scientist with 30 years of oil patch experience. Her career and personal experience make her uniquely qualified to talk about drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Ernst must haul water from outside sources because her well has been poisoned by unnatural and dangerous concentrations of methane gas and other industrial toxins.<br> <br> She filed legal action against EnCana (a large oil and gas company), the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) which approves energy projects in Alberta and the Alberta Government for their responsibility. In May, 2011 Ernst was invited to New York to present her case and to make recommendations to governments at the United Nations 19th Commission on Sustainable Development. On October 1, 2011, UNANIMA International, a UN Economic and Social Council NGO, presented Ernst with its annual "Woman of Courage" award in New York, at the Church Center of United Nations.<br> <br> Much of the general public know little or nothing about hydraulic fracturing (fracking), an increasingly popular, but controversial technique of drilling for oil and natural gas. Fracking involves vertical and sometimes horizontal drilling into coal bed, or shale rock using extreme pressure for the fracture treatments. Anywhere from 200,000 to 1500,000 liters of water and various stimulation and fracturing fluids, and from 75,000 to 320,000 pounds of propellant are consumed during a typical hydraulic fracture of a single well.<br> <br> Fracturing fluids can contain chemicals toxic to humans and wildlife, chemicals that are known to cause cancer. These include diesel fuel, which contains benzene, which in very small quantities can cause cancer and are capable of contaminating millions of gallons of water. Drilling chemicals can be more toxic than fracturing chemicals. The speaker will relate her experiences with fracking in her community of Rosebud, Alberta and her fight to bring the many issues associated with drilling and fracking to the public.</p> </div> </div> When asked if he would like to support the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, Machalski was happy to do so – knowing that with his help, current students could overcome financial barriers and gain unique learning opportunities just as he and his fellow Model UN members did.</p> <p>"Money should never be a barrier to education," he emphasizes. "The more we can help those who can't afford to get an education, the better."</p> <p>A 2009 graduate, Machalski earned a degree in accounting at the U of L. Leading a busy student life, he was president of the Model UN club for two years and acting president for a third, as well as Students' Union Management Representative and Director for two years. Machalski enjoyed the close-knit community at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬.</p> <p>"I enjoyed the relationships I was able to develop with students, faculty, and staff," he says. "The accessibility to professors was amazing. I was never a number at the U of L."</p> <p>Although he now lives in Calgary working as an accountant at Encana, Machalski continues to be an engaged member of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ community. He regularly attends alumni events in Calgary and occasionally returns to campus.</p> <p>"Last year I attended convocation," he says. "Walking around the school gave me goosebumps, seeing the blue and gold flags and everyone in their gowns. I'm very proud to be an alumnus of the U of L."</p> <p>Giving to the U of L is another way Machalski stays connected to his alma mater. Machalski supports the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ out of both gratitude and responsibility.</p> <p>"I feel that it's my duty to give back to the institution that has given me so much," he says. By SHERRI GALLANT<br /><br /> An educational film with algae-filled Lake Winnipeg as its focal point appeals to farmers and city dwellers to change their ways and help the country&#39;s watersheds to heal.<br /><br /> Choking Lake Winnipeg, a 25-minute documentary available free online, was screened Thursday at Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs. Produced by <a href="mailto:byrne@uleth.ca" rel="nofollow">Jim Byrne</a>, U of L prof and Chair of <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas/geo" rel="nofollow">Geography</a>, and his wife, Leanne Little, it includes interviews with many of the nation&#39;s top environmental scientists, including David Schindler, Killam Memorial Professor of Ecology at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta, and <a href="http://people.uleth.ca/~joseph.rasmussen/" rel="nofollow">Joe Rasmussen</a>, Canada Research Council Chair in Aquatic Ecosystems at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge.<br /><br /> An original soundtrack for the film was created by Stephen McGlenn, a U of L grad who attended COP 16 in Cancun &mdash; the United Nations Conference on Climate Change &mdash; as a Canadian Youth Delegate.<br /><br /> &quot;We&#39;re looking to change a political/social approach to the way we deal with environment,&quot; said Byrne. &quot;I went to some of my very favorite colleagues, Canada Research Chairs in many locations, outstanding and brilliant colleagues.&quot;<br /><br /> Byrne&#39;s expertise is in global environmental change. He was the lead scientist, originator and co-producer of the 2002 award-winning television series Global Change and the 2004 TV series Water Under Fire.<br /><br /> &quot; Our goal was to inform people in a qualitative way and let them know that not only do we have this very challenging environmental problem, but we have some suitable solutions if we just have the political will.&quot;<br /><br /> Comparisons can be made with conditions in southern Alberta, where chemical runoff from farming and manure from beef, chicken and hog operations makes its way into the Oldman River watershed. Farmers, said Byrne, can go to zero-tillage practices which holds moisture in the soil and doesn&#39;t allow erosion and runoff; while city dwellers can take steps that include conserving water, being aware of what they shouldn&#39;t flush down their toilets, and using less &mdash; or zero &mdash; herbicides and pesticides on their lawns.<br /><br /> The film shows how massive blue-green algae blooms have appeared in Lake Winnipeg and other water bodies across the Canadian prairies. Eutrophication (when water is depleted of oxygen by algae, killing the body of water) is fast becoming a problem; not just in Canada but in the most heavily-populated parts of the industrialized and developing world.<br /><br /> To learn more, visit <a href="http://www.scientia.com" rel="nofollow">www.scientia.com</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics It can also prove to be very expensive, and many students do not have the resources to study abroad. For one group of students from South America, a new scholarship has made this opportunity possible.</p> <p>Candela Yrazabal Gonzalez is a management exchange student from Argentina. She recently received the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship, allowing her to study at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge for the fall semester.</p> <p>"I really wanted to have an experience in Canada, and the programs at the U of L really appealed to me," explains Yrazabal Gonzalez. "There are professors and students here from all over the world, so the U of L seemed like an interesting place to be."</p> <p>The ELAP provides funding for students in Latin America to come study in Canada. Launched in 2009 by the federal government, this program awards scholarships of up to $7,500 for undergraduate exchanges of four months. Scholarships are awarded primarily based on academic standing and English skills.</p> <p>This semester, Rhonda Crow, the incoming exchange co-ordinator for the <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/management" rel="nofollow">Faculty of Management</a>, submitted funding applications for 12 students from Latin America to attend the U of L. All 12, including Yrazabal Gonzalez, received the full scholarship (a total of $90,000 for the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬) and are currently studying at the U of L.</p> <p>"This program goes a long way in supporting the mandate of the International Management Program at the U of L," says Andrea Amelinckx, the program's director. "We aim to provide students with opportunities to gain a greater understanding of cross-cultural management practices and an appreciation of global and cultural diversity. By sending our students abroad and by welcoming exchange students here, we enrich campus life and expose students to greater cultural diversity and encourage lasting international linkages."</p> <p>For Yrazabal Gonzalez, the ELAP scholarship means the opportunity to learn in new ways that would not be possible in her home country.</p> <p>"There are different resources and opportunities here than in Argentina," she says. "Being here allows me to learn from a different point of view and to gain cross-cultural knowledge."</p> <p>Yrazabal Gonzalez is even taking her international study opportunity to another level by volunteering with the Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge. She says the volunteer work extends her learning outside of the classroom, and allows her to learn about aboriginal culture, which is one of her research interests.</p> <p>Yrazabal Gonzalez and her fellow recipients of the scholarship are part of a larger group of 56 exchange students currently studying at the U of L.</p> <p>"Exchange students have been instrumental in the growth of the International Management Program," says Amelinckx. "Students from the U of L continually meet students from other countries and learn about their cultures. We have a diverse range of exchange destinations, allowing our students many options for studying abroad and also bringing in students from all over the world."</p> <p>Although Yrazabal Gonzalez plans to return to Argentina after her semester here, she intends to maintain a connection with Canada. She is interested in international development and hopes to work with the United Nations. She sees her experience at the U of L as helping her reach not only career goals but allowing her to grow in other ways.</p> <p>"I am so happy to be here and I am learning so much," says Yrazabal Gonzalez. "I couldn't be here without the ELAP scholarship. This scholarship has opened a big door for me."</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/faculty-management" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Faculty of Management</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/aboriginal-council-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/federal-government" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">federal government</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/united-nations" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">United Nations</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/candela-yrazabal-gonzalez" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Candela Yrazabal Gonzalez</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/andrea-amelinckx" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Andrea Amelinckx</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/rhonda-crow" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Rhonda Crow</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/director" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Director</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ students prosper from ELAP program" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 14 Oct 2010 19:09:52 +0000 trevor.kenney 4244 at /unews
