"This can lead to the emergence of 'nickel and dime' irritants that create unnecessary barriers to economic activity."<br> <br> Recently, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed that the U.S. Congress authorize a study to explore the feasibility of collecting a fee for both Americans and visitors returning to or entering the United States across its land borders with Canada and Mexico. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, about 193 million people crossed the U.S. land border in 2012 &ndash; including 1.5 million across Montana's 13 border crossings with Canada.<br> <br> The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee quickly passed an amendment to the comprehensive immigration bill now before Congress to scrap the measure. Congress is also considering proposals to allow Canadian "snowbirds" not working in the United States to stay an additional two months (above the current six) if they own or rent property there without triggering tax penalties under complex IRS rules. Canadians have invested heavily in vacation and other properties in the Flathead Valley and elsewhere in Montana in recent years.<br> <br> In 2012, almost one million vehicle crossings occurred at 13 ports of entry into Montana, including 737,724 personal vehicles, with 1,300,642 passengers, 175,770 trucks, 843 buses, 21,342 passengers; and 5,145 pedestrians &ndash; most of the latter between the border communities of Sweetgrass and Coutts. The top three crossings &ndash; Sweetgrass (I-15); Roosville (US-93), and Peigan (US-89) &ndash; account for 86 per cent of passenger vehicle and 84 per cent of truck traffic entering Montana from Canada.<br> <br> "Cross-border travel, particularly for tourism and recreation, is a major engine for the economy of Flathead Valley," says Hale, who studies economic, security, and other cross-border issues between Canada and the United States. "In addition, Canadian travelers have generated much of the traffic growth at Kalispell / Glacier Park and Kalispell Airports in recent years."<br> <br> Hale notes that Montana's members of Congress and area legislators have a record of engaging business interests from Montana's northern border regions with a view to promoting economic development and job creation. With members of Congress from both northern and southern border states weighing in on these types of issues, sometimes with very different priorities, it's important for Montanans who benefit from continued cross-border traffic to ensure their voices are heard on these issues, says Hale.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div After all, a Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ ID number is just a simple sequence of digits and every student has one. Why is it then that years after graduation, when we have occasion to remember that long forgotten string of integers, do so many of us wax nostalgic?</p><p>Perhaps the answer lays not so much in the numbers themselves but in the memories they have come to symbolize, memories of friends and professors, great marks, not so great marks and the ultimate realization of an incredible accomplishment.</p><p>At the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, the first two numbers on a student&#39;s ID represent the year that a student begins studying there. If you know a bit about the history of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, you might guess that the first student ID started with the number 67. Wayne Anderson (BASc &#39;73), the first student registered at the U of L, however, tells a little different story of ID number 00057001.</p><p>&quot;When I graduated from high school in Picture Butte in 1957, Kate Andrews was the chairman of the board that was starting up a college in Lethbridge. Because our school district contributed funds to the building of the college, the college gave us the opportunity to go in and start as first year university students,&quot; remembers Anderson. &quot;I started out in education. There was a big need then for teachers, so for incentive to get us enrolled, our tuition was only 100 dollars for a semester. Although we were within the college, we were actually the first Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge students.&quot;</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img alt="Wayne Anderson" src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/alumni-anderson.jpg" title="Wayne Anderson, here at the Aperture sculpture, will be on campus in May to receive his Fiat Lux Alumni Ring."><div class="image-caption">Wayne Anderson, here at the Aperture sculpture, will be on campus in May to receive his Fiat Lux Alumni Ring.</div></div></p><p>The first building built with those funds still stands as part of a local high school.</p><p>&quot;They built onto the west end of Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. There were rooms there for us to use and as soon as we finished the year we moved out and the Collegiate took over. William Cousins was the dean of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ students there, and that is how we started out in the fall of 1957,&quot; explains Anderson.</p><p>After his first year, Anderson took a break from school to work at the research station in Vauxhall. He married his sweetheart in 1966 and later moved back to Lethbridge to accept a job at the Lethbridge Research Centre.</p><p>&quot;My Mother had gone to grade 11 and in the 1920s that was quite a feat. I did not have a very good showing my first year at the college and my mother was so disappointed that I didn&#39;t carry on. I wanted to rectify it and make her proud of me, so I started back at Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬,&quot; recalls Anderson.</p><p>Balancing a full-time job with a young family and part-time studies, Anderson once again pursued a degree, this time in physical sciences. He eventually graduated with a BASc in geography in 1973.</p><p>&quot;I aimed toward that degree because I was working in that field and I really loved my job. The courses I took, geomorphology, soils, agricultural geography, research techniques, Russian and Canadian geography, were all somehow related to the research station and its work worldwide. The professors would post our marks on the door. In all those years taking courses I never had a hard time finding mine because the students&#39; IDs started in the 60s and 70s and my ID stood out like a sore thumb because it started with 57,&quot; chuckles Anderson.</p><p>Anderson continued to work at the research station until he retired in 1991. Not one to sit still long, he began working as a driver for the armoured car division of Loomis before retiring again in 2003. Deciding that retirement was not for him, Anderson began yet another career working for the Commissionaires as Security personnel for the Alberta/Montana transmission line.</p><p>Now 75 years young, Anderson loves visiting the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ campus on a regular basis as part of the Walk for Wellness group. On May 29, 2013 he will be on campus to participate in a special ceremony to receive the Fiat Lux Alumni Ring.</p><p>&quot;One of my proudest accomplishments is graduating after spending all those years in Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. The ring is something to always remind me of the years I put in and of being a part of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. I feel pretty impressed to see how far the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ has come from when I first started until now. When I see all these students I think, gee it has been a long time since I have been a student here,&quot; laughs Anderson. &quot; It is great to be an alumnus!&quot;</p><p><strong>GET THE FACTS</strong></p><p>&middot; Anderson has been married for 47 years and has two daughters and one son, with one daughter a U of L alumna<br /><br /> &middot; He has been a curler for 50 years and still coaches wheelchair curling in Lethbridge<br /><br /> &middot; An old car buff, Anderson has driven his 1966 Chevy hardtop in the annual Street Wheelers weekend<br /><br /> &middot; He calls the &#39;57 Chevy his favourite vehicle, and briefly owned one after his first year of university</p><p><em>This story first appeared in the April 2013 edition of the Legend. regional economy in the Flathead Valley.<br> <br> Townley was outlining the benefits of improving and increasing relationships with Canadian visitors and their neighbours. The Flathead Valley is an area frequented by Canadian visitors, and encompasses Whitefish, Kalispell and other communities.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/townley.jpg" alt="Donna Townley" title="Economics instructor Donna Townley is helping the Flathead Valley region of Montana understand the benefits of Canadian tourism."><div class="image-caption">Economics instructor Donna Townley is helping the Flathead Valley region of Montana understand the benefits of Canadian tourism.</div></div></p><p>Working in partnership with the <a href="http://www.dobusinessinmontana.com/" rel="nofollow">Montana West Economic Development Group</a> and the Kalispell and Whitefish Convention and Visitors Bureaus, they produced a seminar for the regional business community that explained the Canadian economy, the purchasing power of the Canadian dollar and her research-based discoveries of who visits the Flathead Valley and why.<br> <br> While it may be common knowledge that there are a lot of Canadian visitors and residents in the area, the actual definition of 'a lot' is a surprise to many. Townley says that increased awareness of the impact that Canadians have on the regional economy should help businesses better serve Canadian visitors.<br> <br> "The people who attended understood much better that there is a market in southern Alberta for the Montana experience, and they want to build a bridge, not close the gate," says Townley.<br> <br> She adds that the seminar gave attendees a better understanding of the Canadian point of view, and the economic impact of how Canadians can help their local economy.<br> <br> "Increasing or even securing Canadian tourism into the Flathead Valley will strengthen the Valley's economy," she says. "I was very pleased to have the support of the Glacier Bank and their people, who talked about Canadian currency. As well, there was a lot of interest in changing credit card machines to take Canadian debit cards, as well as other measures."<br> <br> Townley says the debit card shift would be of significant benefit, since a recent survey conducted by VISA indicated that more than 65 per cent of Canadians – who are already among the world's highest users of debit cards – would want to use their debit cards south of the border.<br> <br> She adds that her presentation was a combination sales pitch and crash course in first-year macroeconomics, all the while outlining some big picture reasons why Montana is of continued interest to Canadians. Providing a basic understanding of what influences the value of the Canadian dollar, as well as the Canadian economy, also went a long way with those who attended the event.<br> <br> "I used prices for everyday items such as pizza, beer, groceries, a tank of gasoline and other typical things Canadians might purchase to illustrate that, even when the value of the Canadian dollar falls to the US dollar (or lower) Canadians will still travel to the Valley, because prices are generally 20 per cent higher in Canada for the majority of items," says Townley.<br> <br> "The ultimate purpose was to inform local business owners about Canadians so they will be able to continue building strong relationships across the border and provide the best customer service possible."<br> <br> More than 130 people attended the seminar at <a href="http://www.fvcc.edu/" rel="nofollow">Flathead Valley Community College</a>. Guests included business owners from Montana and Alberta, local and regional government representatives, and interested citizens. Townley says she is still getting e-mail questions and comments from guests.<br> <br> "We hoped to identify those businesses looking for opportunities for Valley-wide cooperation to attract Canadians to the area for entertainment, shopping, recreation, home purchase and business investment," says Kim Morisaki, manager of Client Development and Resources, Montana West Economic Development. "We have heard only great reviews and everyone loved her presentation."<br> <br> <em><strong>This story first appeared in the Legend. All the while, they are competing against more than 50 other teams from across North America as part of the Rocky Mountain region of the Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest.</p> <p>How did the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge group fare? Very well. Of the four teams in the competition from the U of L, one group took second place and three other teams landed in the middle third of the results &ndash; 23rd, 25th, and 29th place overall.<br> <br> "Students have to apply what they learn in different courses, and some problems require knowledge of techniques or algorithms that are not taught in any course," says team advisor<br> Dr. Howard Cheng (<a href="http://www.cs.uleth.ca/" rel="nofollow">mathematics and computer science</a>). "These are taught during our regular practice sessions, where the teams spend several hours per week training for this contest."</p> <p>The competition draws students from large and small colleges and universities throughout Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Eastern Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Alberta, Saskatchewan and New Mexico. The group received funding from the <a href="http://www.uleth.ca/fas" rel="nofollow">Faculty of Arts and Science</a> as well as <a href="http://www.albertainnovates.ca/technology/" rel="nofollow">Alberta Innovates &ndash; Technology Futures</a> to support the costs for participation.</p> <p>Cheng says the contest requires logical thinking skills and precise implementation of their ideas.</p> <p>"If their solution is incorrect for even one test case, it is considered wrong," he says.</p> <p>The groups had limited time to complete a series of nine problems, which ranged from supposedly simple, to very complex.</p> <p>"We had to figure out how to write code based on where the letter 't' appeared in a series of words," says Keilan Scholten, a third year mathematics and computer science student. "It seems simple, but we wound up using more than an hour and a half of our time allotment. The first six of our problems were done in just over two hours."</p> <p>Among the problems, the group successfully created a ranking of teams for a soccer league, figured out the maximum number of climbers a piece of climbing rope can support and worked out a way to determine if packages of certain dimensions were the right size to be mailed.</p> <p>Team group members included: (Team A) Darcy Best, Keilan Scholten, Hugh Ramp; (Team B) Jeremy Andrijancic, Johnny Boldt, Kim Wikkerink; (Team C) Mark Fischer, Mark Hunter, Fern Leavens; (Team D) Falcon Momot, Jason Racine and Fei Wang. Best (fourth year), Ramp (second year) and Scholten (third year) also finished third in the Alberta Collegiate Programming Contest, held in mid-October as a warm-up to the regional contest.</p> This fall, U of L alumna Ramona Big Head (BEd '96) will take 23 students from the Blackfoot Confederacy with her all the way to New York City to perform "Strike them Hard!" The Baker Massacre &ndash; a play that speaks to a long-lost tragedy that many have never heard about.</p> <p>Big Head wrote the script as her final project while pursuing her master of education at the U of L. It brings to life a piece of history that dates back more than 135 years to a cold day in January.</p> <p>It was 1870 and U.S. Major Eugene Baker and his troops had been given orders to find a group of troublemakers in the area and "strike them hard." When they came across a Blackfeet camp set up along the Marias River in northern Montana, they mistook it as their target.</p> <p>Despite a signed declaration from the superintendent of Indian Affairs stating that the peaceful camp was not to be attacked, 217 Blackfeet people &ndash; mostly women, children and the elderly &ndash; were killed.</p> <p>When Big Head first learned about the massacre through an Aboriginal Elder mentor program she helped develop, she was shocked to discover that her great-great grandmother, who although only a child at the time, was among a small group who survived.</p> <p>"I was really angry when I first heard about the massacre, especially when I realized that there was a direct connection to my ancestry," says Big Head.</p> <p>"But today I can talk about the Baker Massacre and not be angry about it. Why? Because I am doing something about it. I wrote the play to remind my people of what our ancestors endured. We're a testimony to their strength."</p> <p>Following a recommendation from her master's supervisor, Big Head submitted a proposal for the play to be included in Performing the World '08 &ndash; a New York festival that brings together more than 400 activists, scholars and researchers from around the world who share a common goal to use performance to foster growth and development.</p> <p>Exceeding Big Head's greatest expectations, the play was the first submission to ever be accepted from a First Nations group. Big Head and a cast of students ranging in ages from six to 18 are preparing for a performance of a lifetime on a stage off Broadway.</p> <p>"While there are many ways to tell a story, for me this is the best way &ndash; to have children learn the story, perform it and share it with others. These kids are learning and teaching others about the strength and resiliency of our people. It is something they will never forget."</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/new-york" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">New York</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/city/new-york-city" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">New York City</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-naturalfeature-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">NaturalFeature:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/natural-feature/marias-river" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Marias River</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/eugene-baker" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Eugene Baker</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/major" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Major</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/supervisor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">supervisor</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/superintendent" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">superintendent</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/montana" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Montana</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Rethinking the future" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 29 Oct 2009 16:53:27 +0000 trevor.kenney 4892 at /unews Horns into Canada West final /unews/article/horns-canada-west-final <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-f336ef1c580f0a2a8c8874eeda2425a6"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">October 23, 2009</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's rugby team is looking for its third straight national title, with the first stage of that process a run through the Canada West conference championships this weekend in Edmonton.<br> <br> On Friday afternoon, the Horns booked their spot in Sunday's title game with an 86-0 rout of Victoria Vikes in the first of two semifinal games.<br> <br> The lopsided victory over the Vikes was hardly unexpected. The Baker Massacre &ndash; a play that speaks to a long-lost tragedy that many have never heard about.</p> <p>Big Head wrote the script as her final project while pursuing her master of education at the U of L. It is something they will never forget."</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/new-york" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">New York</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/city/new-york-city" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">New York City</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-naturalfeature-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">NaturalFeature:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/natural-feature/marias-river" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Marias River</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/eugene-baker" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Eugene Baker</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-position-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Position:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/major" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Major</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/position/supervisor" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">supervisor</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/position/superintendent" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">superintendent</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-provinceorstate-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">ProvinceOrState:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/province-or-state/montana" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Montana</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Rethinking the future" class="rdf-meta"></span> Mon, 27 Oct 2008 16:29:43 +0000 trevor.kenney 5509 at /unews
