U of L puts exclamation point on summer with Shine On Summer Festival, Sept. 1-3

Is there a better way to close out summer than with the biggest outdoor festival southern Alberta has ever seen?

In celebration of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s 50th anniversary, and in partnership the Enmax Centre, the City of Lethbridge and presenting sponsors Lethbridge Lodging Association and TD Insurance Meloche Monnex, the Shine On Summer Festival promises a weekend of music, culture and community, Sept. 1 to 3 at the U of L Community Stadium.

“This festival is built around our Alumni Homecoming and will not only celebrate the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s 50th anniversary, but the southern Alberta community of which we are so proud to be a part,” says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon. “It’s the last weekend of summer and an old-fashioned festival is the perfect way to bring everyone out to the stadium for one last summer party.”

The weekend opens with a host of Alumni Homecoming events, including the annual John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament, followed by a live concert event and community fair in the U of L Stadium. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy a summer evening of outstanding music from award-winning artists, capped off with a spectacular fireworks show featuring the Canadian National Fireworks Team. On Sunday, a free day of arts, culture, food and drink, song and dance and sporting events for all ages will round out this one-time-only festival.

“We’ve never done anything this big before but we’ve never turned 50 before either,” adds Mahon. “With our alumni coming back to campus, our students just beginning to arrive for the fall semester and the lineup of artists and activities we have planned, I expect this weekend will be talked about for years to come.”

The U of L, along with the Enmax Centre, will reveal the all-star lineup of musicians for the concert event at a special announcement on Friday, March 24 at 11 a.m. in the Enmax Centre Lounge. Special pre-sale tickets will then be available to U of L alumni, students, faculty and staff before full ticket sales commence on Monday, March 27.

“The Enmax Centre is proud of its partnership with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, and excited to be celebrating its 50th anniversary with the largest outdoor celebration Lethbridge has seen,” says Kim Gallucci, Enmax Centre general manager. “This weekend will have something for everyone, and we look forward to being a part of it.”

Horns women's hockey hosts National Female Hockey Challenge

For the second season in a row, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team will conclude its pre-season preparation by hosting the National Female Hockey Challenge.

The three-day event features six Canadian Inter��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Sport teams as well as 12 'AAA' Midget girls teams and utilizes the Horns' home facility, Nicholas Sheran Arena, as well as Henderson Arena and the Enmax Centre.

The Horns will play three times over the course of the tournament, gearing up for next weekend's Canada West regular season opener.

Joining the ‘Horns in this year's CIS tournament are the Mount Royal ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Cougars, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto Varsity Blues, Ryerson ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Rams, Concordia ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Stingers and St. Thomas ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Tommies.

For the ‘Horns, they will open the tournament Friday evening at 8 p.m. versus the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto. They'll then face the Ryerson Rams at 8 p.m. on Saturday night. The tournament concludes Sunday with the ‘Horns playing the St. Thomas Tommies at 2 p.m. All games of the CIS portion of the tournament will be played at the Enmax Centre.

The Pronghorns will also host a Skate with the Pronghorns event on Saturday afternoon, 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., at the Enmax Centre. The skate is open to the public and admission is free.

In addition to hosting the CIS portion of the tournament, the ‘Horns are also hosting a ‘AAA’ Midget girls tournament with teams from across Alberta. All of the midget tournament games will be played at Nicholas Sheran Arena and Henderson Arena.

Canada-Wide Science Fair in closing stretch

They've been judged, they've toured southern Alberta, they've hiked all over campus and by all accounts have had a ton of fun, but there is still more to come for the participants of the 52nd annual Canada-Wide Science Fair, which takes place on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus and in the community until Friday, May 17.

Details of some of the events are outlined below.

GRAND FINALE AWARDS CEREMONY, MAY 16

Thursday, May 16, 2013, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Enmax Centre, 2510 Scenic Drive S.

Nearly $1 million in cash, prizes and scholarships will be awarded to top students.

This event is open to the public. Tickets are available to the public at the Enmax Ticket Centre (403-329-7328). Tickets are free, but a $5 administration fee will apply.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair 2013 – Awards Ceremony will also be live streamed on the Internet for the first time. You can watch the ceremony by visiting this website.

KIDWIND CHALLENGE, MAY 17

More than 100 of southern Alberta's brightest young wind energy engineers will be going head-to-head in a friendly competition at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, while approximately 800 students also learn how to make wind turbine crafts.

Lethbridge College's International Wind Energy Academy is hosting The BMO KidWind Challenge during the Canada-Wide Science Fair, a combined event that also provides an interesting opportunity for hundreds of students from across southern Alberta to learn more about wind turbine technology. The event, which is supported by BMO, runs from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge on the track level of the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness.

Grass fire burning west of city

UPDATE, Tuesday, Sept. 12, 10:02 a.m.
Classes are running and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge operations are back to normal today after the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ ceased non-essential services late Monday afternoon in response to the grass fire event west of the city.
Everything at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is fully operational today and the U of L expects no further interruptions of service related to the grass fire. The decision to shut down non-essential services and to cancel evening classes was made to help alleviate traffic to and from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, allowing emergency services personnel clearer travel so that they could deal with the grass fire.

9:55 p.m.
Fire is now under control but fire crews will be working through the night. Evacuation orders are still in effect and will continue until it is safe to return. Estimated size of the fire is 4,800 hectares. Over 100 responders from Lethbridge and surrounding communities. Number of tanker drops by Alberta Sustainable Resources - 1 Bird Dog Plane, 2 Helicopters, 3 Tanker Planes.
9:45 p.m.
With the grass fire now under control and Lethbridge Fire overseeing hot spots, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has lifted its Emergency Alert notification.
Normal operations at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012. All classes will take place as scheduled.

Lethbridge Fire is reporting that the grass fire is now under control but that they will be monitoring hot spots through the evening.

Fire crews will continue to work through the night to control hot spots.

Local state of emergency is still in affect for the City of Lethbridge. Fire and wind conditions will continue to be monitored through the evening.
8:35 p.m.
Hot spots are still burning and fire crews continue to work in various areas. Last air retardant drop has taken place for the night.

Air operation will be making a second drop before nightfall. Ground crews continue to battle on the ground. All posted evacuations and alerts are still in place.

Fire crews continue to monitor the weather and are working on the fire west of Lethbridge. Planning at the Emergency Operations Centre is ongoing.

RCMP have confirmed that Highway 3 remains closed between Lethbridge and Coalhurst.
5:54 p.m.
The City of Lethbridge has ordered a mandatory evacuation for Bridgeview Campground.
5:53 p.m.
When preparing for an evacuation, remember to take photos, important papers, ID, passports, pets & medications. Evacuees with pets are asked to register at the evacuation centres and leave the animals in the car until arrangements can be made.
5:21 p.m.
The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is suspending all non-essential services and cancelling scheduled evening classes for tonight. At this point, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ classes are scheduled to go ahead Tuesday, Sept. 11.
This is being done to help alleviate road congestion for emergency crews who are dealing with the current local state of emergency due to the wildfires burning west of Lethbridge. NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN EVACUATION OF CAMPUS.
Food services in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall will continue to operate to serve students residing on campus and staff members who are unable to leave campus.
This does not affect classes scheduled at our Calgary and Edmonton campuses.

The City of Lethbridge has order a mandatory evacuation for the Westside Trailer Court. These residents are asked to go to family and friends if it is safe to do so. They can also go to the Fritz Sick Centre or the ENMAX Centre. Bus is en route to help residents evacuate.

4:48 p.m.

Residents are asked to limit cell phone use during this time to keep lines clear for emergency services. As well, residents are asked to check on elderly and disabled neighbours and on those whose first language is not English.

Once again, no evacuations currently for the City of Lethbridge. Residents in Indian Battle Heights, Heritage Heights & West Highlands are to prepare for a possible evacuation.

3:52 p.m.

The City of Lethbridge has declared a local state of emergency and is preparing to evacuate residents of West Highlands and Indian Battle Heights.

3:50 p.m.

Emergency Alert Alberta has officially issued an evacuation notice for the Town of Coalhurst.

3:48 p.m.

Multiple news sources are reporting that the grass fire has jumped the river and the Town of Coalhurst is now being evacuated.

3:33 p.m.

There is currently no evacuation order issued for anyone within the City of Lethbridge. Official notifaction for evacuations will come from Emergency Alert Alberta.

3:02 p.m.

Coalhurst residents have now been put on alert in case they are asked to evacuate. The County of Lethbridge has declared a local state of emergency.

Parents of children who are currently in schools north of Whoop Up Drive are advised to pick up their children now, as these children are being sent home early.

2:51 p.m.

Lethbridge Fire Department is reporting that it has called for assistance from Nobleford and Coaldale to help battle the grass fire west of the city. The department has also staged heavy equipment west of Burnco in the event the fire progresses across the river and closes in on the city's west side. It has not yet jumped the river.

2:39 p.m. Update

The fire continues to progress rapidly as winds helped it jump Hwy 509. Residents of Mountain Meadows, Sunset Acres and Township 8-22 have been advised to evacuate immediately.

1st Choice Centre sees rise in usage

Southern Alberta is finding another reason to come to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge – the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport & Wellness.

Having now completed its second full year of operations, there is context to the facility's usage numbers and not surprisingly, they are on the rise.

"We expected it to be quite popular, however maybe not this popular," says Manager, Facilities & Services, Deb Marek. "We haven't really ever marketed the facility."

Despite ongoing construction, limited use over the summer months and repair work following severe flooding a year ago, the facility still saw a significant rise in visits over the past year. Even more noteworthy was the percentage ratio of community and student users, with about 45 per cent of total visits by members of the community.

"It's a given we'll have the students but to see that many community members coming in is very exciting," Marek says. "The facility was funded partially by the City of Lethbridge, so their expectation is that the community is going to use it and it's nice to see people are coming."

The increase in total member visits from the facility's first year is a healthy 7 per cent, much of that coming from community members, whose usage increased 14.9 per cent in the period from May 1, 2008 to Apr. 30, 2009. That increase is reflected in a substantial uptick in total memberships sold, an impressive 11.3 per cent.

The 1st Choice Savings Centre has also attracted some of the area's biggest events, both sporting and conventional. The 4A South Zone High School Basketball Championships have relocated to the U of L after years at the Enmax Centre, while the facility also welcomed the South Western Alberta Teachers' Convention Association this past spring.

"We're really excited to host some of the bigger events. It's very important to host community events and we found that a lot of the people coming in were seeing the facility for the first time," Marek says.

Looking ahead, the U of L will serve as host to both Alberta high school volleyball and basketball provincial tournaments in fall 2009 and spring 2010 respectively, an important showcase for potential students.

"That's our target market for future students," Marek says. "If we get the opportunity to show it to kids from right across the province, to show what programs we have and to show off our facilities, that's critical for their recruitment in the future."
