Summer camp fun just around the corner

Pull out your paintbrushes and throw on your stage make-up: Fine Arts Summer Camps are back!

Last year's art and drama camp instructors have signed on for another exciting year of creativity and collaboration with children aged 7-16.

Drama camp instructors, and current ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge drama/education students, Erinn Watson and Elyse Whittaker are excited to spend the summer creating new and exciting plays.

"I'm so excited for this summer," says Watson, returning for her third year with the camps. "Every week I look forward to seeing the students' hard work presented on a working university stage, complete with costumes, lights and sound."

All the art and drama camp instructors are back for another year of creativity and collaboration.

Erinn and Elyse's enthusiasm for theatre and passion for sharing that energy with kids is immediately contagious. They've already been hard at work planning themes for each week including Kids in Blue (a parody of Men in Black), When I Grow Up (an exploration of career possibilities) and The Mother Goose Tales (a series of vignettes from classic Mother Goose Rhymes).

They have also come up with something new for this year – the final week of camps for 12-16 year-olds (Aug 12-16), students will have the opportunity to create their own viral video.

Art camp instructors Meagan Foreman and Michelle Sylvestre, also current art/education students, are looking forward to another summer inspiring students through the lives of famous artists and working with a variety of art mediums. Hands-on activities get the students involved in sculpture, painting, drawing and creating. Each week wraps up with a formal exhibition to present to friends and family.

Fine Arts camps at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge are unique in that they take place in real art and drama settings. Drama camps take place in the David Spinks Theatre, equipped with full stages, lights, sound, costumes and more. Art camps take place in one of the art studios, equipped with all the inspiration, tools and guidance needed to inspire artists of any level.

Fun Run/Walk taking registrations

Everybody may now know who President Mike Mahon is, but the Get to Know U Fun Run/Walk isn't just about meeting the new man on campus. Instead, it's an opportunity for everyone to gather in a recreational setting, all the while raising funds to support KidSport Alberta.

The first incarnation of the fun run/walk was truly an opportunity to introduce the new president to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community but it has grown into so much more over the ensuing two years. Scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22, 11 a.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre, the fun run/walk is an opportunity to mix and mingle with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community, explore campus and bring as many people to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as possible.

This year, a new 3km course has been added to the original 5km course. It is also stroller friendly, opening the event up to the entire family.

Registration fees for the event are $15 per person with children six and under registering for free. School group rates are also available.

"We wanted it to be a local charity and something that fits with the theme of physical fitness and promoting an active community," says Dr. Jennifer Copeland, Chair of the run organizing committee. "We also want to continue to foster that community relationship the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has established with Lethbridge and southern Alberta."

The inaugural event drew participants from both the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as well as the community as a whole. Copeland says the course is designed to give runners a look at the entire ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ campus, possibly showing people areas they've never seen before.

"People often come to campus for a very specific reason, and they rarely ever wander around. We designed the course to take in parts of campus that they might not usually get to, like the Breezeway and around Aperture Lake and so on," she says. "We also wanted to feature our new buildings such as the Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building, Markin Hall and the new addition to the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience, so it gives people the opportunity to see what's new on campus."

Registration for the event is $15 per person and can be done by contacting Sport and Recreation Services (403-329-2706, www.uleth.ca/sportrec).

Copeland says to keep in mind that the event is a fun run/walk and is open to everyone.

"Lots of people walked the course last year and had a great time with it," she says, adding there were a number of strollers being pushed around the course. "It's not a super-competitive event. We will have a clock this year so that people can chart their times but we're not issuing any official times. It's whatever you want to make of it."

Live music will be featured at the finish line, along with refreshments and, if last year was any indication, a number of excellent draw prizes. As well, the first 75 registrants will receive a special Fun Run hat.

"It's a lot of fun, a great way to really see the campus and a reason to get out and be active for a good cause."

Fun Run to benefit local KidSport

The Get to Know You Fun Run gains status as an annual event this fall when the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community gathers Saturday, Sept. 24 to challenge the scenic 5K campus course.

The run debuted as an installation event for President Mike Mahon and his wife Maureen last year and proved to be very popular, with more than 80 people taking part. It prompted organizers to look at the run as an annual opportunity to gather the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community for an activity that promotes health and wellness, all the while lending support to a local charitable organization. This year, all proceeds raised will go to support the local chapter of KidSport, an organization that provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sports.

Summer sport camps bring an infusion of youth to campus

A youth movement is once again coming to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus – one Frank Huss welcomes with open arms.

Huss, the youth and intramurals supervisor for Sport and Recreation Services, oversees an influx of up to 800 children through the annual summer sport camp program. Offering everything from fencing, rock climbing and basketball to specialized leadership camps, the program not only keeps ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge sports facilities humming through the summer months, it often introduces the southern Alberta community to the U of L.

"It's a good avenue for us, as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, to really connect with the community," says Huss. "We cater mainly to young, elementary-aged students and it's never too early to expose them to everything we have here on campus. You never know what that could turn into down the road."

The most popular camps annually include rock climbing and multi activity, and while they will remain as staples, along with the sport camps that are linked to the U of L's athletic programs (hockey, basketball and soccer), Huss and his staff evaluate their offerings each year and make subtle changes. Three new camps being offered this summer include fencing, seven's rugby and tennis. As well, judo is back in the fold as Ben Kwan, a disciple of the late Dr. Yosh Senda, looks to follow in the great sensei's footsteps.

"We try to add new things every year. We're limited to space with what we can do so we often experiment within our multi activity camps to see how things go," says Huss. "We did that with both rugby and tennis, running them as a component of the multi activity before making each a full-fledged camp."

Adding rugby is a natural, with the U of L boasting the three-time national championship women's program as a coaching resource, while the addition of tennis includes a partnership with the Lethbridge Tennis Club. What surprises Huss is the popularity of fencing, which has seen a second camp added to satisfy demand.

Some of the more traditional camps have lagged a little in registration numbers, specifically hockey, as there tends to be increased competition throughout the region for young players. Huss stresses the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ hockey camps have their own niche, designed more for the six to 10-year-old less experienced players. As well, the U of L utilizes its women's hockey program to offer a unique camp opportunity for nine to 12-year old girls.

With the opening of the new Community Sports Stadium, the prospect of adding more summer camps is a distinct possibility.

"With the addition of the new field, it opens things up to where we can consider doing a football camp, as well as track and field components," says Huss.
